Uit: The Suicide Run

„Amid the smelly stretch of riptides and treacherous currents formed by the confluence of the upper East River and Long Island Sound stands a small low-lying island. Surmounted for most of its length by ancient prison buildings, it is an island hardly distinguishable, in its time-exhausted drabness, from those dozen or so other islands occupied by prisons and hospitals which give to the New York waterways such a bleak look of municipal necessity and — for some reason especially at twilight — that air of melancholy and erosion of the spirit. Yet something here compels a second glance. Something makes this island seem even excessively ugly, and a meaner and shabbier eyesore. Perhaps this is because of the island's situation; for a prison island it just seems to be in too nice a place. It commands a fine wide view of the blue Sound to the east and the white houses on the mainland nearby — houses which, though situated in the Bronx, are so neat and scrubbed and summery-looking as to make New York City seem as remote as Nantucket. One passing by the island might more logically envision a pretty park here, or groves of trees, or a harbor for sailboats, than this squalid acre of prison buildings. Yet perhaps it's the buildings themselves which make the place look more than ordinarily grim and depressing — so that the cleanly utilitarian, white marble structures on the other of the city's islands seem, by comparison, almost beguiling sanctuaries. These date back nearly a century, soot-encrusted brick piles of turrets and fake moats and parapets and Victorian towers. With these, and with their crenellated battlements and lofty embrasures and all the sham artifices of fortressed power, the buildings possess a calculated, ridiculous ugliness, as if for someone locked within the walls they must add to the injury of simple confinement the diurnal insulting reminder — in every nook and cranny unavoidable and symbolic — of his incarceration.”

Ondina

Je lach is helder, je streling is diep;
Je koude kussen beminnen het begane kwaad;

Je vorm vlucht, je beweging is vloeiend;
Je haren lijken op wuivend riet;
Je stem ruist zoals een verraderlijke vloed;

verstrengelt, versmacht, wreedaardig wurgt;
Diep in de golven, dooft een doodsstrijd
in een nachtelijke bezwijming.

Chanson

In pleated robes, long and flowing

Like all chimeras, gleaming bright

The bloom of spring to me you bring

Within your hands, so fair and light.

I dread that thrill, pearly and fresh;

Your fragile breast, I do not touch;

Trembling before your sacred flesh,

I dread your charming mouth as much!

To God, I feel my soul allies

When, underneath my proud embrace

The sweet blue bruising of your eyes

Extinguishes, without a trace.

But then, so white in my arms' bonds,

At my love-cry, faint and devout,

You smile and you give no response,

Your closed eyes freezing my soul out...

Spectral remorse still makes me dread, -

Which ecstasy cannot suppress, -

That you, somehow, may be wounded

By a spontaneous caress.

That Women Are But Men’s Shadows

Follow a shadow, it still flies you,

Seem to fly it, it will pursue :

So court a mistress, she denies you ;

Let her alone, she will court you.

Say are not women truly, then,

Styl'd but the shadows of us men ?

At morn and even shades are longest ;

At noon they are or short, or none :

So men at weakest, they are strongest,

But grant us perfect, they're not known.

Say, are not women truly, then,

Styl'd but the shadows of us men ?

To Celia.

Come, my CELIA, let us prove,

While we may, the sports of love ;

Time will not be ours for ever :

He at length our good will sever.

Spend not then his gifts in vain.

Suns that set, may rise again:

But if once we lose this light,

'Tis with us perpetual night.

Why should we defer our joys ?

Fame and rumor are but toys.

Cannot we delude the eyes

Of a few poor household spies ;

Or his easier ears buguile,

So removed by our wile ?

'Tis no sin love's fruit to steal,

But the sweet theft to reveal :

To be taken, to be seen,

These have crimes accounted been.

Uit: Tsotsi

„Tsotsi opened his eyes and listened to the knocking on his door.

Instinctively, but for no other reason than having awoken, he put his hand under his pillow to find his knife.

Before he found it, another thought crossed his mind and he sat up on his elbows and looked down at the foot of the bed. The baby was still there, and apparently asleep.

The knocking had stopped, but now came again. Tsotsi shook his head.

He must have fallen asleep; some time in the night his tiredness must have caught up with him and he had fallen asleep.

No, it was in the morning. He remembered going out once to piss and hearing cocks crowing and noticing that the sky was pale.

How long had he slept? He looked at the window and listened. Bright light and casual noise. Early morning.“

Uit: The dancing girl of Izu and other stories (Vertaald door J. Martin Holman)

“Since I was a boy, I have had neither my own house nor home. During school vacations I stayed with relatives. I made the rounds of my many relatives from one house to another. However, I spent most of my school vacations at the homes of two of my closest relatives. These two houses were south and north of the Yodo River, one in a town in Kawachi Province and the other in a mountain village in Settsu Province. I traveled back and forth by ferry. At either house I was greeted not with "Thank you for coming" but with "Welcome home."

During the summer holiday when I was twenty-two, I attended three funerals in the space of less than a month. Each time, I wore my late father's silk gauze jacket, long divided skirts, and white socks, and I carried a Buddhist rosary.

First there was a funeral in a branch of the Kawachi household. The mother of the family's patriarch had died. She was quite old; they said she had grandchildren in their thirties and that she had been nursed through a long illness. You might say she had gone on to her reward without regrets. When I gazed at the patriarch's despondent appearance and the granddaughters' red eyes, I could see their grief. But my heart did not mourn directly for the late woman; I could not grieve her death. Although I burned incense before the altar, I did not know the face of the woman in the coffin. I had forgotten there even was such a person.

Before the coffin was carried out, I made a condolence call in mourning clothes, rosary and fan in hand, with my elder cousin who had come from Settsu. Compared to my cousin's behavior, what little I did, though I was young, appeared considerably more composed and appropriate for a funeral ceremony. I was comfortable performing my role. Surprised, my cousin studied my bearing and imitated me. Five or six cousins were gathered in the main house. They felt no need to make solemn faces.

About a week later, I was in Kawachi when I received a telephone call from my elder cousin in Settsu. There was going to be a funeral in a branch of the family into which his elder sister had married.”

A Sonnet Upon a Stolen Kiss

Now gentle sleep hath clos'd up those eyes

Which waking kept my boldest thoughts in awe,

And free access unto that sweet lip lies,

From whence I long the rosy breath to draw;

Methinks no wrong it were if I should steal

From those two melting rubies one poor kiss;

None sees the theft that would the thief reveal,

Nor rob I her of aught which she can miss;

Nay, should I twenty kisses take away,

There would be little sign I had done so;

Why then should I this robbery delay?

Oh! she may wake and therewith angry grow.

Well, if she do, I'll back restore that one,

And twenty hundred thousand more for loan.

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind

The oftener seen, the more I lust,

The more I lust, the more I smart,

The more I smart, the more I trust,

The more I trust, the heavier heart;

The heavy hearty breeds mine unrest,

Thy absence, therefore, like I best.

The rarer seen, the lest in mind,

The less in mind, the lesser pain,

The lesser pain, less grief I find,

The lesser grief, the greater gain,

The greater gain, the merrier I,

The further off, the more I joy,

The more I joy, the happier life,

The happier life, less hurts annoy,

The lesser hurts, pleasure most rife:

Such pleasures rife shall I obtain

When distance doth depart us twain.

„He was waiting between the lions in front of the Institute, exactly as expected in the cloak and blue velvet suit and boots with canvas sides. The only change was in his hair which he was now wearing in the Directoire style, the points coming down over his forehead. Because of the cold his face was deep red. He had a long mulberry-colored mouth, and impressive stature, and warts, and the distorted nose and leopard eyes. Our meetings were always happy and we hugged each other. "Old boy, how are you? One of your good Chicago days. I've missed the cold air in California. Terrific! Isn't it. Well, we may as well start right with a few of those marvelous Monet's." We left attached case, umbrella, sturgeon, rolls, and marmalade in the checkroom. I paid two dollars for admission and we mounted to the Impressionist collection.
There was one Norwegian winter landscape by Monet that we always went to see straightaway: a house, a bridge, and the snow falling. Through the covering snow came the pink of the house, and the frost was delicious. The whole weight of snow, of winter, was lifted effortlessly by the astonishing strength of the light. Looking at this pure snowy dusky light, Thaxter clamped his pincenez on the powerful twisted bridge of his nose with a gleam of glass and silver and his color deepened. He knew what he was doing. With this painting his visit began on the right tone.“

The turn of the screw zag liggen.

The Cemetery For Turkish Soldiers

I

I'm a sailor in the navy,

fishes ate my eyes.

Seeing and weeping are over for me.

I was tall in my life,

if you don't believe me

look at my clothes.

Someone says -I'm a soldier too,

no different from the other dead.

Once we lived in houses.

Now we're outside the doors,

we pass through the wall.

And another says -

Don't believe them,

they're all liars,

we don't exist.

II

To enter my room with more ease

they come in the form of dead relations.

I look -it's an uncle or brother.

I look -it's a Polish sergeant

and at once he speaks.

I had a daughter five years old.

She's dead, now we're together.

She's fed-up here,

she can't roll a hoop,

she left her hands behind in Warsaw.

A voice says -

No potatoes to hoe,

no stones to break,

no burdens to carry to market,

I'm at peace here.

One is worried about his wife.

He asks me news from home.

When I died

they took my greatcoat.

I'm cold,

winter's ahead.

Then they speak as one.

Du trinkst drei-vier Gläser in kaum fünf Minuten.

The Sailor sits beneath the bastions of El Corte Ingles,
a scrawny cat, gnawing at the sun with his vile oaths
and unknotting the yarns that prod him in his sleep.
The very shape of him, like waves of vintage radios
stinks in between one country and another,
snatches words uttered, and those slain,
and then transmits the moral of the story —
an olive-skinned giggle, a filterless cigarette
and two italians trailing a one-nighter.

Ola mujer, que pasa? Ostia puta.

If you come into the complex and start climbing
one floor after another,you can look down
and see him curse from every point of view:
trussardi, zegna, fnac and valentino
regard you with a slightly bizarre beard
downing the sun beneath a scorching beer. . .

And if you get to the top floor and gaze,
down at this city that loves you by the rate
you may be late — by then the Sailor will have picked
the pick of tales to date.
