„He was dead lonely; more lonely than I and with more reason. The other fellows might give me a rub about Ireland or about the bombing campaign, and that was seldom enough, and I was never short of an answer, historically informed and obscene, for them. But I was nearer to them than they would ever let Ken be. I had the same rearing as most of them; Dublin, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, London. All our mothers had all done the pawn–pledging on Monday, releasing on Saturday. We all knew the chip shop and the picture house and the fourpenny rush of a Saturday afternon, and the summer swimming in the canal and being chased along the railway by cops.
But Ken they would never accept. In a way, as the middle-class and upper-class in England spend so much money and energy in maintaining the difference between themselves and the working-class, Ken was only getting what his people paid for but, still and all, I couldn’t help being sorry for him, for he was more of a foreigner than I, and it’s a lonely thing to be a stranger in a strange land.“

EIS DAIMONA

Laat nu, in angst en pijn,
Meester, mij niet alléen...
Wien heb ik buiten U?
Immers, niet éen?

't Liefste dat Jeugd gewon
Naamt Ge mij, liefde en eer.
'k Zweeg. Dat de Dienaar niet
Twist' met den Heer!

Vordert Gij alles nu?
'k Zwijg. Want ook dit is recht.
Zijt Gij de Meester niet?
En ik de Knecht?

Maar blijf bij mij, blijf bij mij,
Blijf bij mij, o mijn God!
Maak niet Uw woord te schand,
Maak niet Uw trouw ten spot!

Hoort...om mijne eenzaamheid
Hoont U 't gemeen...
Laat mij, in angst en pijn,
Meester, niet gans alléen!

Sint Sebastianus

Zijn dàt een schutters, o mijn God,

is dàt een gilde!

Zie toe, hoe bot en in den wilde

zij losgaan op uwen armen bloet;

hoe scheel zij mikken,

hoe telkens als in been of buik of voet

de dolle pijlen pikken,

oneindig zoet uw dienaar zegt: ‘niet goed!’

Tot, na een lange poos,

daar eindelijk een treffer trilde

en Sint Sebastianus rilde

en rekkend riep: ‘'t is roos!’ -

Toen joelde 't bot, mispuntig gilde,

dat later tot patroon Hubertus koos

en sindsdien vele rozen voert in schilden

en pluimen op den hoed.

Uit: Lieder der Liebe

Du bist wie Wald und Wind,

fremd unter Wolkenweh –

und deine Haare sind

Duft wie von Wiesenklee.

Wolken und Welle verwandt,

hältst Du Dein leises Gesicht,

über ein heimliches Land,

das uns die Sonne verspricht.

Werfe Dein Lied in mich,

nach meinen Lippen fromm –

so wie der Sturm in Dich,

leg Dich in mich und komm ….

Bette sei uns der Garten,

Thymian, Nelke und Mohn,

Flieder und etwas vom zarten

Hauche der Rosen schon.

Sträuche tauchen hernieder,

decken uns, Blühende, zu,

geben in Blüten uns wieder

die lang verlorne Ruh.

Lege Dein Antlitz in mich,

dunkel, voll heimlicher Pracht.

Lass´ das Vergangne, brich

alles, was traurig macht.

Wind

He shouts in the sails of the ships at sea,

He steals the down from the honeybee,

He makes the forest trees rustle and sing,

He twirls my kite till it breaks its string.

Laughing, dancing, sunny wind,

Whistling, howling, rainy wind,

North, South, East and West,

Each is the wind I like the best.

He calls up the fog and hides the hills,

He whirls the wings of the great windmills,

The weathercocks love him and turn to discover

His whereabouts -- but he's gone, the rover!

Laughing, dancing, sunny wind,

Whistling, howling, rainy wind,

North, South, East and West,

Each is the wind I like the best.

The pine trees toss him their cones with glee,

The flowers bend low in courtesy,

Each wave flings up a shower of pearls,

The flag in front of the school unfurls.

Laughing, dancing, sunny wind,

Whistling, howling, rainy wind,

North, South, East and West,

Each is the wind I like the best.

Solitaire

When night drifts along the streets of the city,

And sifts down between the uneven roofs,

My mind begins to peek and peer.

It plays at ball in old, blue Chinese gardens,

And shakes wrought dice-cups in Pagan temples,

Amid the broken flutings of white pillars.

It dances with purple and yellow crocuses in its hair,

And its feet shine as they flutter over drenched grasses.

How light and laughing my mind is,

When all the good folk have put out their bed-room candles,
And the city is still!

Uit: Botchan (Vertaald door Yasotaro Morri)

„Because of an hereditary recklessness, I have been playing always alosing game since my childhood. During my grammar school days, I wasonce laid up for about a week by jumping from the second story of theschool building. Some may ask why I committed such a rash act. There wasno particular reason for doing such a thing except I happened to belooking out into the yard from the second floor of the newly-builtschool house, when one of my classmates, joking, shouted at me; "Say, you big bluff, I'll bet you can't jump down from there! O, youchicken-heart, ha, ha!" So I jumped down. The janitor of the school hadto carry me home on his back, and when my father saw me, he yelledderisively, "What a fellow you are to go and get your bones dislocatedby jumping only from a second story!"

"I'll see I don't get dislocated next time, " I answered.

One of my relatives once presented me with a pen-knife. I was showing itto my friends, reflecting its pretty blades against the rays of the sun, when one of them chimed in that the blades gleamed all right, but seemedrather dull for cutting with.

"Rather dull? See if they don't cut!" I retorted.

"Cut your finger, then, " he challenged. And with "Finger nothing! Heregoes!" I cut my thumb slant-wise. Fortunately the knife was small andthe bone of the thumb hard enough, so the thumb is still there, but thescar will be there until my death.

About twenty steps to the east edge of our garden, there was amoderate-sized vegetable yard, rising toward the south, and in thecentre of which stood a chestnut tree which was dearer to me than life. In the season when the chestnuts were ripe, I used to slip out of thehouse from the back door early in the morning to pick up the chestnutswhich had fallen during the night, and eat them at the school.“

Uit: The prisoner of Zenda

"What's the matter, my dear?" he asked.

"She objects to my doing nothing and having red hair," said I, in an injured tone.

"Oh! of course he can't help his hair," admitted Rose.

"It generally crops out once in a generation," said my brother. "So does the nose. Rudolf has got them both."

"I wish they didn't crop out," said Rose, still flushed.

"I rather like them myself," said I, and, rising, I bowed to the portrait of Countess Amelia.

My brother's wife uttered an exclamation of impatience.

"I wish you'd take that picture away, Robert," said she.

"My dear!" he cried.

"Good heavens!" I added.

"Then it might be forgotten," she continued.

"Hardly--with Rudolf about," said Robert, shaking his head.

"Why should it be forgotten?" I asked.

"Rudolf!" exclaimed my brother's wife, blushing very prettily.

I laughed, and went on with my egg. At least I had shelved the question of what (if anything) I ought to do. And, by way of closing the discussion--and also, I must admit, of exasperating my strict little

sister-in-law a trifle more--I observed:

"I rather like being an Elphberg myself."

When I read a story, I skip the explanations; yet the moment I begin to write one, I find that I must have an explanation. For it is manifest that I must explain why my sister-in-law was vexed with my nose and hair, and why I ventured to call myself an Elphberg. For eminent as, I must protest, the Rassendylls have been for many generations, yet participation in their blood of course does not, at first sight, justify the boast of a connection with the grander stock of the Elphbergs or a claim to be one of that Royal House. For what relationship is there between Ruritania and Burlesdon, between the Palace at Strelsau or the Castle of Zenda and Number 305 Park Lane, W.?“

The Mysterious Visitor

Spirit, lovely guest, who are you?

Whence have you flown down to us?

Taciturn and without a sound

Why have you abandoned us?

Where are you? Where is your dwelling?

What are you, where did you go?

Why did you appear,

Heavenly, upon the Earth?

Mayhap you are youthful Hope,

Who arrives from time to time

Cloaked in magic

From a land unknown?

Merciless as Hope,

Sweetest joy you show us

For a moment, then

Take it back and fly away.

Was it Love that you enacted

For us all in mystery? . . .

Days of love, when one beloved

Rendered this world beautiful

Ah! then, sighted through the veil

Earth did seem unearthly...

Now the veil has lifted; Love is gone;

Life is empty, joy - a dream.

Was it Thought, enchanting
You embodied for us here?
Far removed from every worry,
With a dreamy finger pointing
To her lips, she sallies forth
Just like you, from time to time,
Ushers us without a sound
Back to bygone days.

Or within you dwells the sacred spirit
Of Dame Poetry? . . .
Just like you, she came from Heaven
Veiling us twofold:
Using azure for the skies,
And clear white for earth;
What lies near is lovely through her;
All that's distant - known.

Or perhaps 'twas premonition
That descended in your guise
And to us with clarity described
All that's sacred and divine?
Thus it often happens in this life:
Something brilliant flies to meet us,
Raises up the veil
And then beckons us beyond.

Klosterstille

Sterne leuchten aufs Gefild,

Sanfte Blumen schlafen,

Wie so friedlich ist's und mild,

In der Ruhe Hafen!

Seid mir dankbar froh gegrüßt,

Gott geweihte Mauern!

Fließt, ihr stillen Tage fließt

Ohne banges Trauern!

Heiter blick' ich in das Thal

Von der kleinen Zelle,

Auf den Hain im Dämmerstrahl,

Auf die Schimmerquelle.

In mir ists wie diese Nacht

Dämmernd still und kühle;

Außen ließ ich all die Macht

Schmerzlicher Gefühle.

Was vom trennend tiefen Schmerz

Je ein Wesen fühlte,

Keiner der dies arme Herz

Nicht vom Grund durchwühlte!

Glühend, edler Freundschaft Glück

Schlug dies Herz entgegen,

Kalte Selbstsucht kam zurück

Oft den treuen Schlägen.

Und die Lieb', ach sonst so schön!

Mir nur gab sie Schrecken;

Sturm nur war ich ausersehn

Fremder Brust zu wecken.

Nahe nie ein Männerherz

Sich dem dunkeln Kreise

Meines Schicksals! Ach mein Schmerz

Trifft es auch, der heiße!

- So noch in der Jugend Land

Doch an Lebens Grenzen;

Hier vor mir von Himmels Rand

Sanfte Sterne glänzen.

Heil daß sie vorüber sind

Harten Lebens Schmerzen!

Sicher ruht ein armes Kind

An des Vaters Herzen!

Liebe

Zeigt unser Tagwerk. Und wie teuer
Die kleine Wärme ist, hab ich erfahren
In diesem schlimmsten Jahr
Von allen meinen Jahren.
Wenn wieder so ein Winter wird
Und auf mich so ein Schnee fällt,
Rettet nur diese Wärme mich
Vom Tod. Was hält
Mich sonst? Von unserer Liebe bleibt: daß
Wir uns hatten. Kein Gras
Wird auf uns sein, kein Stein,
Solange diese Glut glimmt.

Solange Glut ist,
Kann auch Feuer sein ..

Angst

Die Amsel macht mich traurig,
Die Kirschen wollen blühn.
Ich fürchte, du könntest mir sterben
Und alles würde doch grün.

Vielleicht ist es auch mein Tod,
der mich schon traurig macht.
Die Amsel kann ich nicht fragen,
Wer hilft mir heute Nacht?

Bitte

Lasst mir das Silberfingerkraut.

Lasst mir den Hasenklee.

Lasst mir den kleinen Lerchenlaut.

Lasst mir den Liliensee.

Lasst mir den Sandweg durch die Heide.

Die Kiefer und den Birkenbaum.

Braucht ihr nicht manches Mal auch beide,

die Weltstadt und den Weltenraum?

Narrenschip

Nergens land in zicht!

klimmend in hun kroonluchters?

daar komt de albatros al aangevlogen
zeehondensnuiten baren blinkende kanonskogels

schuimbekkend! stuiptrekkend!
galopperend in de stormdoop!

nu het nacht wordt
nu een zwarte zon het zeil verduistert
hapt een vis het laatste dimlicht op

nu het nacht wordt
nu de zwarte zon verduistert
trillen kinders in corona's van pupillen

nu het nacht wordt en duister
krijst de mast zich eenmaal schor:

nergens land in zicht!

Uit: The First Third

"For a time I held a unique position: among the hundreds of isolated creatures who haunted the streets of lower downtown Denver there was not one so young as myself. Of these dreary men who had commited themselves, each for his own good reason, to the task of finishing thier days as pennyless drunkards, I alone, as the sharer of their way of life, presented a replica of childhood to which their vision could daily turn, and in being thus grafted onto them, I became the unnatural son of a few score beaten men.

It was my experience to be constantly meeting new cronies of my father's who invariably introduced me with a proud, "This is my boy." Whereupon the pat on my head was usually followed by the quizzical look the eye reserved for uncertainty, which here conveyed the question " Shall I give him a little drink?" Sensing the offer, backed by a half-extended bottle, my father would always say "You'll have to ask him," and I would coyly answer, "No thank you, sir." "

Lullaby For the Cat

Minnow, go to sleep and dream,

Close your great big eyes;

Round your bed Events prepare

The pleasantest surprise.

Darling Minnow, drop that frown,

Just cooperate,

Not a kitten shall be drowned

In the Marxist State.

Joy and Love will both be yours,

Minnow, don't be glum.

Happy days are coming soon --

Sleep, and let them come...

Insomnia

The moon in the bureau mirror

looks out a million miles

(and perhaps with pride, at herself,

but she never, never smiles)

far and away beyond sleep, or

perhaps she's a daytime sleeper.

By the Universe deserted,

she'd tell it to go to hell,

and she'd find a body of water,

or a mirror, on which to dwell.

So wrap up care in a cobweb

and drop it down the well

into that world inverted

where left is always right,

where the shadows are really the body,

where we stay awake all night,

where the heavens are shallow as the sea

is now deep, and you love me.

Uit: The Appeal

„The jury was ready.

After forty-two hours of deliberations that followed seventy-one days of trial that included 530 hours of testimony from four dozen witnesses, and after a lifetime of sitting silently as the lawyers haggled and the judge lectured and the spectators watched like hawks for telltale signs, the jury was ready. Locked away in the jury room, secluded and secure, ten of them proudly signed their names to the verdict while the other two pouted in their corners, detached and miserable in their dissension. There were hugs and smiles and no small measure of self-congratulation because they had survived this little war and could now march proudly back into the arena with a decision they had rescued through sheer determination and the dogged pursuit of compromise. Their ordeal was over; their civic duty complete. They had served above and beyond. They were ready.

The foreman knocked on the door and rustled Uncle Joe from his slumbers. Uncle Joe, the ancient bailiff, had guarded them while he also arranged their meals, heard their complaints, and quietly slipped their messages to the judge. In his younger years, back when his hearing was better, Uncle Joe was rumored to also eavesdrop on his juries through a ?imsy pine door he and he alone had selected and installed. But his listening days were over, and, as he had con?ded to no one but his wife, after the ordeal of this particular trial he might just hang up his old pistol once and for all. The strain of controlling justice was wearing him down.“

Uit: An American Type

I was courting a young woman, if the kind of brusque, uncertain, equivocal attentions I paid her might be called courting: it was for me at any rate, never having done it before.

I had met her at Yaddo, the artists’ colony, a place you’ve probably heard of, where writers, painters, and musicians were invited for the summer, or part of it, in the hope that, relieved of their usual pressures and preoccupations, and provided with abundant leisure, they would create. Unfortunately it didn’t work that way, as you’ve probably also heard. Most of us needed pressure and preoccupation, since, once there, we loafed or spent a great deal of time in frivolity and idle chatter. It was during the time of the Spanish Civil War, in 1938 to be exact, and of course that formed a part of our conversation, the fact that the Loyalists seemed on the verge of victory and yet incapable of gaining it. There was also at that time a kind of projection of the Marxist mood among young intellectuals. I mention these things to recall the mood of the time as it seemed to me.

I was then engaged in writing a second novel, which I had agreed to complete for my publisher. I had already written quite a section, and this opening section had been accepted and extolled. It was only necessary for me to finish it. But it went badly from then on; in fact, it had gone badly before I reached Yaddo — I can’t blame Yaddo for that: they provided me with the necessary environment to write in. It had gone badly — aims had become lost, purpose, momentum lost. A profound change seemed to be taking place within me in the way I viewed my craft, in my objectivity. It is difficult to say. I am, unfortunately, not analytical enough to be capable of isolating the trouble, though I don’t know what good that would have done either.“

Uit: The Awakening

„A green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, kept repeating over and over:
"Allez vous-en! Allez vous-en! Sapristi! That's all right!"
He could speak a little Spanish, and also a language which nobody understood, unless it was the mocking-bird that hung on the other side of the door, whistling his fluty notes out upon the breeze with maddening persistence.
Mr. Pontellier, unable to read his newspaper with any degree of comfort, arose with an expression and an exclamation of disgust. He walked down the gallery and across the narrow "bridges" which connected the Lebrun cottages one with the other. He had been seated before the door of the main house. The parrot and the mocking-bird were the property of Madame Lebrun, and they had the right to make all the noise they wished. Mr. Pontellier had the privilege of quitting their society when they ceased to be entertaining.
He stopped before the door of his own cottage, which was the fourth one from the main building and next to the last. Seating himself in a wicker rocker which was there, he once more applied himself to the task of reading the newspaper. The day was Sunday; the paper was a day old. The Sunday papers had not yet reached Grand Isle. He was already acquainted with the market reports, and he glanced restlessly over the editorials and bits of news which he had not had time to read before quitting New Orleans the day before.
Mr. Pontellier wore eye-glasses. He was a man of forty, of medium height and rather slender build; he stooped a little. His hair was brown and straight, parted on one side. His beard was neatly and closely trimmed.
Once in a while he withdrew his glance from the newspaper and looked about him. There was more noise than ever over at the house. The main building was called "the house," to distinguish it from the cottages. The chattering and whistling birds were still at it. Two young girls, the Farival twins, were playing a duet from "Zampa" upon the piano.“

Fort, fort -- gleichviel wohin!
