Elle me dépassait constamment.

Wij botsten, jij viel,

toch rechtop – naast me gaat
en me uitzwaait. Wees niet bang.
Wees niet bevreesd.

Wagon-Lits

De maan vangt wilde ganzen.
De nachttrein voert kadavers mee.
We stappen uit en vreten.

De botten afgekloven, tanden grif,
we malen scherp de pulp tot pap,
snuivende mormels aan de troggen.

De maan vangt wilde ganzen.
De nachttrein voert kadavers mee.
Stap in en zing.

Uit: Idoru

After Slitscan, Laney heard about another job from Rydell, the night security man at the Chateau. Rydell was a big quiet Tennessean with a sad shy grin, cheap sunglasses, and a walkie-talkie screwed permanently into one ear.
``Paragon-Asia Dataflow,'' Rydell said, around four in the morning, the two of them seated in a pair of huge old armchairs. Concrete beams overhead had been hand-painted to vaguely resemble blond oak. The chairs, like the rest of the furniture in the Chateau's lobby, were oversized to the extent that whoever sat in them seemed built to a smaller scale.
``Really?'' Laney asked, keeping up the pretense that someone like Rydell would know where he could still find work.
``Tokyo, Japan,'' Rydell said, and sucked iced latte through a plastic straw. ``Guy I met in San Francisco last year. Yamazaki. He's working for 'em. Says they need a serious netrunner.''
Netrunner. Laney, who liked to think of himself as a researcher, suppressed a sigh. ``Contract job?''
``Guess so. Didn't say.''
``I don't think I'd want to live in Tokyo.''
Rydell used his straw to stir the foam and ice remaining at the bottom of his tall plastic cup, as though he were hoping to find a secret prize. ``He didn't say you'd have to.'' He looked up. ``You ever been to Tokyo?''
``No.''
``Must be an interesting place, after that quake and all.'' The walkie-talkie ticked and whispered. ``I gotta go on out and check the gate by the bungalows now. Feel like coming?''

„Grummer, moreover, sports a beak of scented wood...

Reclusive and bilious, Grummer lounges the live long day sprawled under the counter, beak stabbing a gap in the floor board...

As you step into the store, a delicious aroma tickles your nostrils... You are welcomed, as you stride up the steps, by a trusty lad, who, instead of hair has, sticking out his head, strands of a green cottony thread; after which you are greeted with great warmth by Algazy and urged to settle on a foot stool.

Grummer spies and waits...Treacherous, with glance askance, unearthing at first his beak only, which he ostensibly douses upwards and downwards in a gully dug into the ledge of the counter, Grummer looms up lastly in full measure... Then, through all manner of manipulation, maneuvers Algazy into absconding the scene, at which time, fawningly, lures you artfully into a variety of verbal intercourse, notably touching on the subjects of sports and literature — until, suddenly, when whim strikes him, he wallops you twice with beak on the belly, impelling you to barrel out into the street, shrieking in agony.

Algazy, who is forever forced into discord and exchanges of words with the clients, on account of this inadmissible gimmick of Grummer's, scurries off after you, prevails upon you to return, and so as to regain your satisfaction, grants you the right — if you already acquired an object of value greater than 15 cents — to... sniff a whiff off of Grummer's beak, and, if you so consent, to squeeze him as hard as you can from an ashen rubber bubble screwed to his back, a bit above the butt, compelling him to bounce through the establishment without bending his knees, all along expelling incoherent grunts...“

Uit: Hangover Square

„They used to rag him until it at last became an accepted thing. "Old Bone" was said to be in one of his "dotty" moods. Mr. Thorne used to be sarcastic. "Or is this one of your-ah-delightfully convenient periods of amnesia, my dear Bone?" But even Mr. Thorne came to accept it. "Extra ordinary boy," he once heard Mr. Thorne say (not knowing that he was overheard), "I really believe it's perfectly genuine." And often, instead of making him look a fool in front of the class, he would stop, give him a curious, sympathetic look, and, telling him to sit down, would without any ironic comment ask the next boy to do what he had failed to do.

"Dead" moods-yes, all his life he had had "dead" moods, but in those days he had slowly slipped into and out of them-they had not been so frequent, so sudden, so dead, so completely dividing him from his other life. They did not arrive with this extraordinary "snap"-that had only been happening in the last year or so. At first he had been somewhat disturbed about it; had thought at moments of consulting a doctor even. But he had never done so, and now he knew he never would. He was well enough; the thing did not seriously inconvenience him; and there were too many other things to worry about-my God, there were too many other things to worry about!

And now he was walking along the cliff at Hunstanton, on Christmas afternoon, and the thing had happened again. He had had Christmas dinner with his aunt, and he had gone out, as he had told her, to "walk it off." He wore a light raincoat. He was thirty-four, and had a tall, strong, beefy, ungainly figure. He had a fresh, red complexion and a small moustache. His eyes were big and blue and sad and slightly bloodshot with beer and smoke. He looked as though he had been to an inferior public school and would be pleased to sell you a second-hand car. Just as certain people look unmistakably "horsey," bear the stamp of Newmarket, he bore the stamp of Great Portland Street. He made you think of road houses, and there are thousands of his sort frequenting the saloon bars of public-houses all over England. His full mouth was weak, however, rather than cruel. His name was George Harvey Bone.“

Uit: Leitfaden a priori.

Divided

I
An empty sky, a world of heather,
Purple of foxglove, yellow of broom;
We two among them wading together,
Shaking out honey, treading perfume.

Crowds of bees are giddy with clover,
Crowds of grasshoppers skip at our feet,
Crowds of larks at their matins hang over,
Thanking the Lord for a life so sweet.

Flusheth the rise with her purple favor,
Gloweth the cleft with her golden ring,
'Twixt the two brown butterflies waver,
Lightly settle, and sleepily swing.

We two walk till the purple dieth,
And short dry grass under foot is brown,
But one little streak at a distance lieth
Green like a ribbon to prank the down.

Sehnsucht

To Fanny Ann

As the flower bloweth,
As the stream floweth,
Daughter of beauty,
Do thou thy duty.
What, though the morrow
May dawn in sorrow?
Ev’n as light hasteth,
Darkness, too, wasteth:
Morn then discloses,
Raindrops on roses!
Daughter of beauty,
What, then, is duty?
Time says, “Death knoweth!”
Death says, “Time showeth!”

Epigram

Free Trade means work for beef, not bone;
It means that men are brothers;
That every man should have his own,
And nobody another’s.

Uit: Oral History Interview with Paul Green, 1975

„JACQUELYN HALL:

You mentioned the rebellions that went on in the '30s, against the poverty and the whole sweep of industrialization by the working people, who gained this certain kind of self-consciousness and a certain kind of understanding of where they were and began to try to organize. There were many different kinds of things that happened in the '30s. Could you kind of talk about this … the Burlington Dynamite Case, for example? Some of the incidents of labor organization that you got personally involved in?

PAUL GREEN:

Well, in the South, the labor union, the trade union movement was slow and they never got started. Some of the reasons were that the people who came out of the Civil War depression and gradually awoke, like the Reynoldses, the Grays, the different people around and got the South started again. All around the South, the Carolinas, Georgia, a local fellow would get the idea and he would build him a little factory and then he would expand it. So, these were sort of landlords with a landlord's point of view and I know that down at Erwin, North Carolina right near where I was born, when I was a little boy, I would go by there with my father and we saw a lot of Negroes sawing and cutting down trees. We said, "What's happening?" and they said, "We are going to build a cotton factory." And the Dukes and Mr. Erwin, they changed the town's name, it was called Duke but it is now named Erwin, and that was early in the century. So, more local industry began to spring up everywhere and the people behind that, Mr. Erwin, was a good Episcopalian and he gave the money and helped build this Episcopal church down here, the new one and they were all, every darn one of them, good church members. Some of them taught Sunday School, like John D. Rockefeller, Sr. did. Each one of them also had that possessive point of view about his factory. He herded in these people, cheap labor. At Erwin, I used to go by and see these children at the noon hour come out of the factory all yellow. I tried to deal with it a little bit in that novel you just mentioned. Well, gradually, when the war came on, a lot of these mill people went to Europe and were treated with this doctrine and so on and saw some new things in the world and then the impact of the labor unions in the North and the Middle West began to seep in. Now and then, there would be a young man in the labor group here in the South who would speak out and later they began to rebel. Like at Burlington and Gastonia and all around.“

Uit: The Wolf (Vertaald door Abbas Milani)

“After the first snow fell, she disappeared. The women would see her sitting beside the heater reading something or pouring tea for herself. When the doctor would go to pay calls in other villages, the driver’s wife or the doorman would stay with the lady. It seems Sadiqeh, the driver’s wife, understood first. She had told the women, “At first I thought she was worried about her husband because she’d start suddenly, go up to the window and pull back the curtains.” She would stand next to the window and gaze into the white, bright desert. Sadiqeh said, “When the wolves start howling, she goes up to the window.”
Anyway, in the winter, if the snow falls, the wolves come closer to the settlement. It’s the same way every year. Sometimes a dog, a sheep, or even a child would disappear, so that afterwards the villagers would have to go out in a group to find, maybe a collar or a shoe, or some other trace. But Sadiqeh had seen the wolf’s glistening eyes and had seen how the doctor’s wife stared at the wolf’s eyes. One time she didn’t even hear Sadiqeh call out to her.
After the second and third snows fell, the doctor was unable to visit the outlying area. When he saw that he would have to stay in his house four or five nights a week, he was ready to join in our social rounds. Our get-togethers were not for the women, but, well, if the doctor’s wife came, she’d be able to join the women. But his wife had said, “I’ll stay home.” Even on the nights when it was the doctor’s turn to host the get-together at his house, his wife would sit next to the heater and read a book, or would go up to the window and look at the desert or, from the window on this side of the house, look at the cemetery and, I think, the bright lights of the village. It was at our house, I believe, when the doctor said, “I must go home early tonight.” Apparently he’d seen a big wolf in the road.“

Uit: The Story Sisters

„It was April in New York City and from the window of their room at the Plaza Hotel everything looked bright and green. The Story sisters were sharing a room on the evening of their grandparents' fiftieth anniversary party. Their mother trusted them completely. They were not the sort of teenagers who would steal from the minibar only to wind up drunk in the hallway, sprawled out on the carpet or nodding off in a doorway, embarrassing themselves and their families. They would never hang out the window to wave away cigarette smoke or toss water balloons onto unsuspecting pedestrians below. They were diligent, beautiful girls, well behaved, thoughtful. Most people were charmed to discover that the girls had a private, shared language. It was lovely to hear, musical. When they spoke to each other, they sounded like birds.

The eldest girl was Elisabeth, called Elv, now fifteen. Meg was only a year younger, and Claire had just turned twelve. Each had long dark hair and pale eyes, a startling combination. Elv was a disciplined dancer, the most beautiful in many people's opinions, the one who had invented the Story sisters' secret world. Meg was a great reader and was never without a book; while walking to school she often had one open in her hands, so engrossed she would often trip while navigating familiar streets. Claire was diligent, kindhearted, never one to shirk chores. Her bed was made before her sisters opened their sleepy eyes. She raked the lawn and watered the garden and always went to sleep on time. All were self-reliant and practical, honor students any parents would be proud to claim as their own. But when the girls' mother came upon them chattering away in that language no one else could understand, when she spied maps and graphs that meant nothing to her, that defined another world, her daughters made her think of clouds, something far away and inaccessible.“

Paris, October 1936

From all of this I am the only one who leaves.

From this bench I go away, from my pants,

from my great situation, from my actions,

from my number split side to side,

from all of this I am the only one who leaves.

From the Champs Elysées or as the strange

alley of the Moon makes a turn,

my death goes away, my cradle leaves,

and, surrounded by people, alone, cut loose,

my human resemblance turns around

and dispatches its shadows one by one.

And I move away from everything, since everything

remains to create my alibi:

my shoe, its eyelet, as well as its mud

and even the bend in the elbow

of my own buttoned shirt.

To My Brother Miguel In Memoriam

Brother, today I sit on the brick bench of the house,

where you make a bottomless emptiness.
I remember we used to play at this hour, and mama

caressed us: "But, sons..."

Now I go hide

as before, from all evening

lectures, and I trust you not to give me away.

Through the parlor, the vestibule, the corridors.

Later, you hide, and I do not give you away.

I remember we made ourselves cry,

brother, from so much laughing.

Miguel, you went into hiding

one night in August, toward dawn,

but, instead of chuckling, you were sad.

And the twin heart of those dead evenings

grew annoyed at not finding you. And now

a shadow falls on my soul.

Listen, brother, don't be late

coming out. All right? Mama might worry.

Stiller Abend in Arezzo:

Vroeg in de dageraad

Vroeg in de dageraad de schone gaat ontbinden
de gouden blonde tros, citroenig van koleur,
gezeten in de lucht recht buiten d' achterdeur,
waar groene wijngaardloof ooit lauwe muur beminde.

die deze vlechten streelt, dit waardig zijnd' alleen;

Zij zijn dan groot of kleen;
Maar ik helaas! alleen

Blijf vol veranderingen.

De dag die voert de nacht,

Het windje wispelt zacht,

Over de groene dallen,

Het woud de bergen siert;

Maar ik ben heel verkiert,

En blijf verkiert in allen.

De zon, naar d'oude sleur,

De dode kruiden, deur

Zijn hitte, doet verrijzen,

Die doen haar open blij;

Maar wie kan toch in mij

Levendig leven wijzen?

Het teder zwakke gras,

En 't vrolijke gewas

Gedijt bij dauw en regen,

Die 't dorstig aardrijk voedt;

Maar wat dat mij ontmoet,

't is nimmermeer te degen.

Het wild gedierte springt

't gevogelt dertel zingt,

De wufte nimfen vlijen

Bebloemd haar aan de dans;

Maar kruid noch rozenkrans

verdrijft mijn fantasijen.

Sur les suprêmes fins et les premières causes ;

Quand vos vers sacreront des pensers grandioses,
Depuis longtemps déjà nous serons au tombeau ;

Pour des coeurs anxieux que ce bruit rendait sourds ;

blanc, noir, blanc, noir, clac,

Oh ! Vous n'entendez pas,

vous n'existez pas,

je suis seul à mourir.

Christmas: 1915

NOW is the midnight of the nations: dark

Even as death, beside her blood-dark seas,

Earth, like a mother in birth agonies,

Screams in her travail, and the planets hark

Her million-throated terror. Naked, stark,

Her torso writhes enormous, and her knees

Shudder against the shadowed Pleiades

Wrenching the night’s imponderable arc.

Christ! What shall be delivered to the morn

Out of these pangs, if ever indeed another

Morn shall succeed this night, or this vast mother

Survive to know the blood-spent offspring, torn

From her racked flesh?—What splendour from the smother?

What new-wing’d world, or mangled god still-born?

Déserts, gonflés de pluie et silencieux;

A l'aube je gagnai la lisière des bois;

Où son pied ne marquait qu'à peine le sol;

Uit: The Ballad Of Ali Of Keshan (Vertaald door Nüvit Özdoğru)

„Temel: Let's be quiet, friends! Our new headman Ali of Keshan will deliver his first inaugural address.
Drunken Rasih
: When did he write it?
Nuri
: He wrote it last night with help from Uncle Dervish, the public letter-writer.
Sipsi
: I didn't know he was that eager.
Ali
: Quiet everybody!
First Citizen: We've got democracy here, haven't we? Can't I express my opinions?
Temel
: Shut your big mouth. Stop twaddling!
Nuri
: Democracy was for the campaign period.
Ali
: If I wanted, I wouldn't consult you at all. I'd do what I pleased. I counted you as human and decided to read it to you.
Lütfiye
: Read it, son, read it. Don't mind them.
Ali
: (starts to read the draft that he wrote on a roll of toilet paper): Article one: A regime of peace and order has been established at Fly Mountain. Anyone who acts contrary and tries to disturb that peace will be made good and sorry and his seven generations before him will be damned and cursed. His house will be made one with the ground with the argument that the building is in dangerous condition and all his estate – real or unreal – will be confiscated.
Voices: Good! Wonderful!“
