I always like summer

Best

you can eat fresh corn

From daddy's garden

And okra

And greens

And cabbage

And lots of

Barbeque

And buttermilk

And homemade ice-cream

At the church picnic

And listen to

Gospel music

Outside

At the church

Homecoming

And go to the mountains with

Your grandmother

And go barefooted

And be warm

All the time

Not only when you go to bed

And sleep

Balances

in life

one is always

balancing

like we juggle our mothers

against our fathers

or one teacher

against another

(only to balance our grade average)

3 grains of salt

to one ounce truth

our sweet black essence

or the funky honkies down the street

and lately i've begun wondering

if you're trying to tell me something

we used to talk all night

and do things alone together

and i've begun

(as a reaction to a feeling)

to balance

the pleasure of loneliness

against the pain

of loving you

Uit: A Childhood: The Biography of a Place

„I went into the long, dim, cool hallway that ran down the center of the house. Briefly I stopped at the bedroom where my parents slept and looked in at the neatly made bed and all the parts of the room, clean, with everything where it was supposed to be, just the way mama always kept it. And I thought of daddy, as I so often did because I loved him so much. If he was sitting down, I was usually in his lap. If he was standing up, I was usually holding his hand. He always said soft funny things to me and told me stories that never had an end but always continued when we met again.

He was tall and lean with flat high cheekbones and deep eyes and black thick hair which he combed straight back on his head. And under the eye on his left cheek was the scarred print of a perfect set of teeth. I knew he had taken the scar in a fight, but I never asked him about it and the teeth marks in his cheek only made him seem more powerful and stronger and special to me.“

Uit: Shadow Tag

„I have two diaries now. The first is the hardbound red Daily Reminder of the type I have been writing in since 1994, when we had Florian. You gave me the first book in order to record my beginning year as a mother. It was very sweet of you. I have written in a book like it ever since. They are hidden in the bottom of a drawer in my office, covered with ribbons and wrapping paper. The latest, the one that interests you at present, is kept in the very back of a file cabinet containing old bank statements, checks left over from defunct accounts, the sorts of things we both vow to shred every year but end up stuffing into files. After quite a lot of searching, I expect, you have found my red diary. You have been reading it in order to discover whether I am deceiving you.

The second diary, what you might call my real diary, is the one I am writing in now.

Today I left the house and drove to the branch of the Wells Fargo Bank that is located in uptown Minneapolis beneath the Sons of Norway Hall. I parked in the customer lot and walked in, through two sets of glass doors, down a spiral staircase, to the safedepositdesk. I tapped a little bell and a woman named Janice appeared. She assisted me in the purchase of a medium-size security box. I paid cash for a year's rental and signed my name, three times for signature verification, on the deposit-box card. I took the key Janice offered.“

Memento

Bedenkt: Den eignen Tod, den stirbt man nur;

The Mother

Abortions will not let you forget.

You remember the children you got that you did not get,

The damp small pulps with a little or with no hair,

The singers and workers that never handled the air.

You will never neglect or beat

Them, or silence or buy with a sweet.

You will never wind up the sucking-thumb

Or scuttle off ghosts that come.

You will never leave them, controlling your luscious sigh,

Return for a snack of them, with gobbling mother-eye.

I have heard in the voices of the wind the voices of my dim killed

children.

I have contracted. I have eased

My dim dears at the breasts they could never suck.

I have said, Sweets, if I sinned, if I seized

Your luck

And your lives from your unfinished reach,

If I stole your births and your names,

Your straight baby tears and your games,

Your stilted or lovely loves, your tumults, your marriages, aches,

and your deaths,

If I poisoned the beginnings of your breaths,

Believe that even in my deliberateness I was not deliberate.

Though why should I whine,

Whine that the crime was other than mine?--

Since anyhow you are dead.

Or rather, or instead,

You were never made.

But that too, I am afraid,

Is faulty: oh, what shall I say, how is the truth to be said?

You were born, you had body, you died.

It is just that you never giggled or planned or cried.

Believe me, I loved you all.

Believe me, I knew you, though faintly, and I loved, I loved you

All.

Uit: The House in Paris

„Her olive-green coat and skirt, absorbing what light there was, had looked black. She looked like a Frenchwoman with all the animation gone. Her manner had been emotional from the first; there was something emotional now about her tense way of sitting. Henrietta, nervous, tried to make evident, by looking steadily out of the window on her side, that she did not expect to be spoken to. She had been brought up to think it rude to interrupt thought.
But Miss Fisher, making an effort, now touched one of the monkey's stitched felt paws. "You must be fond of your monkey. You play with him, I expect?"
"Not nowadays much," said Henrietta politely. "I just always seem to take him about."
"For company," said Miss Fisher, turning upon the monkey a brooding, absent look.
"I like to think he enjoys things."
"Ah, then you do play with him!"
It was not in Henrietta's power to say: "We really cannot go into all that now " Re-crossing her feet, she lightly kicked the despatch case, which contained what she would want for two night journeys and during the day in Paris: washing things, reading matter, one or two things to eat. Turning away again to look at the street, she was glad to see shutters taken down from one shop: a woman in felt slippers was doing this. A paper-kiosk opened to take its stock in, a lady in deep mourning attempted to stop a bus: the frightening cardboard city was waking up at last. Violent skidding traffic foreignly hooted, and Henrietta wished there were more light.“

Abendstimmung

Der Forst ruht still. Still ruht der Forst.
Der Adler schnarcht in seinem Horst.
Die Adlerin seufzt tief und schwer,
sie denkt an einen Ade-ler.
Die Wildsau sanft im Traume grunzt.
Der stolze Hirsch hat ausgebrunzt.
Die Eule ihr Gefieder spreizt.
Das Käuzchen sitzt im Baum und käuzt.
Der alte Förster Eduard
ging längst zu Bett, indes sein Bart
liegt sorgfältig und höchst apart
auf dem Plumeau breit aufgebahrt.
Der Mond schaut durch das Fenster zu,
und über allen Bettzipfeln herrscht Ruh.

Uit: How Ther Third Floor New The Potteries

„I am a plain man, Major, and you may not dislike to hear a plain statement of facts from me. Some of those facts lie beyond my understanding. I do not pretend to explain them. I only know that they happened as I relate them, and that I pledge myself for the truth of every word of them.

I began life roughly enough, down among the Potteries. I was an orphan; and my earliest recollections are of a great porcelain manufactory in the country of the Potteries, where I helped about the yard, picked up what halfpence fell in my way, and slept in a harness-loft over the stable. Those were hard times; but things bettered themselves as I grew older and stronger, especially after George Barnard had come to be foreman of the yard.

George Barnard was a Wesleyan — we were mostly dissenters in the Potteries — sober, clear-headed, somewhat sulky and silent, but a good fellow every inch of him, and my best friend at the time when I most needed a good friend. He took me out of the yard, and set me to the furnace-work. He entered me on the books at a fixed rate of wages. He helped me to pay for a little cheap schooling four nights a week; and he led me to go with him on Sundays to the chapel down by the river-side, where I first saw Leah Payne. She was his sweetheart, and so pretty that I used to forget the preacher and everybody else, when I looked at her. When she joined in the singing, I heard no voice but hers. If she asked me for the hymn-book, I used to blush and tremble. I believe I worshipped her, in my stupid ignorant way; and I think I worshipped Barnard almost as blindly, though after a different fashion. I felt I owed him everything. I knew that he had saved me, body and mind; and I looked up to him as a savage might look up to a missionary.“

Drie bronnen

Und rief: "Was eilst du, holdes Kind, so sehr?

Doch Eros sprach: "Von ihnen lerne, Kind!"

Uit: Portrait of a Legend.

„Everything about her was extraordinary. She was a woman, dressed as a man. A European turned Arab. A Russian who transposed 'nitchevo' into 'mektoub', whose untidy mystical torments, l'âme slave, found peace in Islam's faith - and flesh. She was born on the prim, pale lakeside of Geneva. She died on the burning desert. She was an expatriate wanderer whose nomadic Slav background led her to range the desert insatiably: yet she dreamed of a petit-bourgeois haven, a grocer's shop in some obscure little Algerian town where she and her Arab husband and all his hordes of relatives could conduct a modest business. She adored her insignificant husband, but her sensual adventures were without number. Her behaviour was outrageous: she drank, she smoked hashish, but déclassée, she remained racée. She was the outcast, despised and rejected by French Administration and the colony in general. But she was General Lyautey's trusted friend. She was a writer who was almost unrecognised, and quite penniless till after her death, when, ironically, posthumous editions of her books earned a small fortune —- for others. Her death was strangest of all, for she was drowned in the desert.“

Uit: This Lullaby

„The name of the song is “This Lullaby.” At this point, I’ve probably heard it, oh, about a million times. Approximately.
All my life I’ve been told about how my father wrote it the day I was born. He was on the road somewhere in Texas, already split from my mom. The story goes that he got word of my birth, sat down with his guitar, and just came up with it, right there in a room at a Motel 6. An hour of his time, just a few chords, two verses and a chorus. He’d been writing music all his life, but in the end it would be the only song he was known for. Even in death, my father was a one-hit wonder. Or two, I guess,

if you count me.

Now, the song was playing overhead as I sat in a plastic chair at the car dealership, in the first week of June. It was warm, everything was blooming, and summer was practically here. Which meant, of course, that it was time for my mother to get married again.

This was her fourth time, fifth if you include my father. I chose not to. But they were, in her eyes, married—if being united in the middle of the desert by someone they’d met at a rest stop only moments before counts as married. It does to my mother. But then, she takes on husbands the way other people change their hair color: out of boredom, listlessness, or just feeling that this next one will fix everything, once and for all. Back when I was younger, when I asked about my dad and how they’d met, when I was actually still curious, she’d just sigh, waving her hand, and say, “Oh, Remy, it was the seventies. You know.”

Jacques, mon pur feu flambant, à ton oreille

Uit: Flowers in the Attic

„When he came through the front door late on Friday afternoons—every Friday afternoon (he said he couldn't bear to be separated from us for longer than five days)—even if it were raining or snowing, the sun shone when he beamed his broad, happy smile on us.

His booming greeting rang out as soon as he put down his suitcase and briefcase: "Come greet me with kisses if you love me!"

Somewhere near the front door, my brother and I would be hiding, and after he'd called out his greeting, we'd dash out from behind a chair or the sofa to crash into his wide open arms, which seized us up at once and held us close, and he warmed our lips with his kisses. Fridays—they were the best days of all, for they brought Daddy home to us again. In his suit pockets he carried small gifts for us; in his suitcases he stored the larger ones to dole out after he greeted our mother, who would hang back and wait patiently until he had done with us.

And after we had our little gifts from his pockets, Christopher and I would back off to watch Momma drift slowly forward, her lips curved in a welcoming smile that lit up our father's eyes, and he'd take her in his arms, and stare down into her face as if he hadn't seen her for at least a year.

On Fridays, Momma spent half the day in the beauty parlor having her hair shampooed and set and her fingernails polished, and then she'd come home to take a long bath in perfumed-oiled water. I'd perch in her dressing room, and wait to watch her emerge in a filmy negligee.“

The Nightjar

We loved our nightjar, but she would not stay with us.

We had found her lying as dead, but soft and warm,

Under the apple tree beside the old thatched wall.

Two days we kept her in a basket by the fire,

Fed her, and thought she well might live – till suddenly

I the very moment of most confiding hope

She arised herself all tense, qivered and drooped and died.

Tears sprang into my eyes- why not? The heart of man

Soon sets itself to love a living companion,

The more so if by chance it asks some care of him.

And this one had the kind of loveliness that goes

Far deeper than the optic nerve- full fathom five

To the soul’socean cave, where Wonder and Reason

Tell their alternate dreams of how the world was made.

So wonderful she was-her wings the wings of night

But powdered here and therewith tiny golden clouds

And wave-line markings like sea-ripples on the sand.

O how I wish I might never forget that bird-

Never!

But even now, like all beauty of earth,

She is fading from me into the dusk of Time.

Poem

Birds were singing in the trees;
Summer was abroad as now,
With her troop of murmuring bees,
And blossoms ‘round her brow,

When, seventy years ago, there came
A little child to view the land,
Who found a torch with lighted flame
Made ready to her hand.

Fearless she held the fiery tongue
Close to her white and tender breast;
When lo! the pain became a song
And prayers for the oppressed.

Mother of a new-born race,
Daughter of a race to be,
Regent through the boundless space
Of sad humanity!

Is there realm to vie with thine,
Whither mortals may aspire
Torch of love, the flame divine,
Hath called thee ever higher.

Who has taught the seer to know
Sorrow that was not her own!
Who has made her face to glow
Glad for another's crown!

But by home fires, when day is done,
Charming young and soothing old,
Dearest laurels you have won,
While hearth-stones have grown cold.

Friend, how calm your sunset days!
Your peaceful eyes are set on heaven,
For peace upon the promise stays,—
Who loves much is forgiven.

Chanson

Si je perds bien des maîtresses,
J'en fais encor plus souvent,
Et mes voeux et mes promesses
Ne sont que feintes caresses,
Et mes voeux et mes promesses
Ne sont jamais que du vent.

Quand je vois un beau visage,
Soudain je me fais de feu,
Mais longtemps lui faire hommage,
Ce n'est pas bien mon usage,
Mais longtemps lui faire hommage,
Ce n'est pas bien là mon jeu.

J'entre bien en complaisance
Tant que dure une heure ou deux,
Mais en perdant sa présence
Adieu toute souvenance,
Mais en perdant sa présence
Adieu soudain tous mes feux (...)
