A Forgetful Number

Once upon a time there was a number

Pure and round like the sun

But alone very much alone

It began to reckon with itself

It divided multiplied itself

It subtracted added itself

And remained always alone

It stopped reckoning with itself

And shut itself up in its round

And sunny purity

Outside were left the fiery

Traces of its reckoning

They began to chase each other through the dark

To divide when they should have multiplied themselves

To subtract when they should have added themselves

That's what happens in the dark

And there was no one to ask it

To stop the traces

And to rub them out.

Far Within Us 2

Look here's that uninvited

Alien presence look it's here

A shudder on the ocean of tea in the cup

Rust taking hold

On the edges of our laughter

A snake coiled in the depths of the mirror

Will I be able to hide you

From your face in mine

Look it's the third shadow

On our imagined walk

Unexpected abyss

Between our words

Hoofs clattering

Below the vaults of our palates

Will I be able

On this unrest-field

To raise you a tent of my hands

Give Me Back My Rags

Just come to my mind

My thoughts will scratch out your face

Just come into my sight

My eyes will start snarling at you

Just open your mouth

My silence will smash your jaws

Just remind me of you

My remembering will paw up the ground under your feet

That's what it's come to between us

Uit: Inshallah

"Maybe he couldn't bear the dejection of having proved a fact that even newborns divine, the invincibility of death, and out of consistency he surrendered to it before his time. Or maybe he concluded that, besides constituting the inevitable goal of every thing and every creature, Death is a relief: a repose. And out of impatience, or out of exhaustion, he ran up to it. Could I imitate him? Well, though I can't deny that sometimes Death offers repose or relief, though what we think and desire today doesn't usually correspond to what we'll think or desire tomorrow because every tomorrow is a trap of ugly surprises, my answer is no. I don't think I could run up to Death for impatience or exhaustion. Unless... No, no... I'll never yield, I'll never bend, to its invincibility. I'm too certain that Life is the measure of all, the mainspring of all, the goal of all. And I hate Death too much. I hate it as much as I hate solitude, suffering, pain and the word goodbye.."

The Village Saturday Night

The damsel from the field returns,

The sun is sinking in the west;

Her bundle on her head she sets,

And in her hand she bears

A bunch of roses and of violets.

To-morrow is a holiday,

And she, as usual, must them wear

Upon her bodice, in her hair.

The old crone sits among her mates,

Upon the stairs, and spins;

And, looking at the fading light,

Of good old-fashioned times she prates,

When she, too, dressed for holidays,

And with light heart, and limb as light,

Would dance at night

With the companions of her merry days.

The twilight shades around us close,

The sky to deepest blue is turned;

From hills and roofs the shadows fall,

And the new moon her face of silver shows.

And now the cheerful bell

Proclaims the coming festival.

By its familiar voice

How every heart is cheered!

The children all in troops,

Around the little square

Go, leaping here and there,

And make a joyful sound.

Meanwhile the ploughman, whistling, returns

Unto his humble nest,

And thinks with pleasure of his day of rest.

Then, when all other lights are out,

And all is silent round,

The hammer's stroke we hear,

We hear the saw of carpenter,

Who with closed doors his vigil keeps,

Toils o'er his lamp and strives so hard,

His work to finish ere the dawn appear.

The dearest day of all the week

Is this, of hope and joy so full;

To-morrow, sad and dull,

The hours will bring, for each must in his thought

His customary task-work seek.

Thou little, sportive boy,

This blooming age of thine

Is like to-day, so full of joy;

And is the day, indeed,

That must the sabbath of thy life precede.

Enjoy, it, then, my darling child,

Nor speed the flying hours!

I say to thee no more:

Alas, in this sad world of ours,

How far exceeds the holiday,

The day that goes before!

Vriend Haselthine schijnt diep getroffen.

Ochs
Und dann?

Öchslein
Riss ich mich von der Krippe los
und lief aufs freie Feld und
speiste Halm und Körner.

Ochs
O bilde dir, mein Sohn, kein
solches Leben ein!
Du wünschest, traun! wie ich,
einst wieder Kalb zu sein.
Denn bist du groß, so wird auf
deinen Nacken
ein schweres Joch gelegt;
man spannt dich morgen früh
vor deinen Pflug und schreit
in einem fort: Ochs zieh!
Das Korn, das du gewinnst, das
wird zu Brot gebacken;
dich aber speiset man mit
Stroh und Prügeln ab;
und hast du ausgedient, so
schenkt man dir ein Grab,
zum Lohn für saure Müh, in
deines Herren Magen.
O freu dich deines Glücks in
deinen jungen Tagen!

Uit: The Rising Sun (The Roots of War)

„The sky over Tokyo on the afternoon of February 25, 1936, was dark and foreboding. A thick blanket of snow already covered the city and there was threat of more to come. Three nights earlier more than a foot had fallen, breaking a record of fifty-four years, and causing such a traffic snarl that some theaters had to be turned into temporary hotels for audiences unable to get home. Even under its white cloak of snow, Tokyo looked almost as Western as Oriental. Japan had left much of its feudal past behind to become by far the most progressive, westernized nation of Asia. A few hundred yards from the Imperial Palace with its traditional tile roof was a modern four-story concrete building, the Imperial Household Ministry, where all court business was conducted and the Emperor's offices were located. Just outside the ancient stone walls and moat surrounding the spacious Palace grounds was the same melange of East and West: a longline of modern structures, including the Imperial Theater and the DaiIchi Building, as Occidental as the skyline of Chicago, while a few blocks away, in narrow cobblestone streets, were row upon row of geishahouses, sushi stands and kimono stores, and assorted little ramshackleshops, gay even on that cloudy day with their flapping doorway curtainsand colorful lanterns. Next to the Palace on a small hill was the not quite completed Diet Building, constructed mainly of stone from Okinawa and lookingquasi-Egyptian. Behind this commanding edifice was a cluster of spacious houses, the official residence of government leaders. The largest was that of the Prime Minister. It was two buildings in one,the business part Western in the early Frank Lloyd Wright style, the living quarters Japanese with paper-thin walls, tatami floors and sliding doors.“

Powerwoman be blasted.

So etwas. Das hatte es nie gegeben. Sie war überall hineingegangen. Sie hatte sich alle Türen aufgemacht. Sie durfte das nicht zulassen. Und wann hatte sie sich ernster genommen. Wichtiger. In diesem Gedanken. Sie ging zur Tür. Die Musik zu Ende. Sie hörte Applaus. Gejohle. Pfiffe. Und dann wieder Rhythmus. Jagend. Noch gejagter. Wütend nervös. Sie stieß die Tür auf. Die Stimme hatte sie nicht gehört. Draußen. Die Stimme. Eine Frau. Ein Mädchen. Lieblich. Eine zarte Stimme. Vorsichtig. Sehnsüchtig. Weit über dem Bass. Weit über der Bassgitarre.”

Geachte Muizenpoot,

verwoest mijn lam, verwoest.

liefde mij... etc. (handtekening onleesbaar)

“They’ve left behind the wide, residential section of the street and are now walking down a narrow, treeless sidewalk where more and more frequently the windows and doors of businesses sit open. Bringing the stem of the unlit pipe to his lips, the Mathematician distractedly starts stroking them with the tip, its bowl hidden in his closed hand. He doesn’t say anything now. Above his eyebrows, on his smooth forehead, his skin wrinkles a little, into horizontal furrows, and be–tween the two little blonde brushes appear two oblique fissures, forming a vertex at the bridge of his nose. Leto, meanwhile, remembers: Isabel, the past year, Lopecito, the wake, the closed casket, etc.—and five days before all that, that is, before the wake, Lopecito, etc. no?—as we were, or rather I, yours truly, no?, was saying: green wheat, already so tall, from the bus window. He has left Rosario Norte an hour before, with his mother. They’re on their way to Andino, to his maternal grandparents’ house, to spend the weekend. It’s a Friday in late spring. They left Rosario at 1:00. When they leave behind the San Lorenzo industrial complex, the land fills with tall green wheat, fields of flax, and, sometimes, yellow sunflowers right up to the shoulders of the road. Every once in a while they pass a farmhouse, with its windmill and eucalyptus, which interrupts, as they say, the fields, the same way stations divide the scant towns in two like a river or a railroad would in other places in the world. A parallel dirt path separates, in the country, the geometrical grains from the road—and on that path, every once in a while, a solitary carriage travels, hardworking and unreal, which the bus, as slow as it is, leaves behind with ease.”

The tounge, that wild meat

for Zbigniew Herbert & Mr. Cogito

the tongue, that wild meat, that grows in the wound,

in the open would of the mouth, that feeds on deceitful truth,

the tongue, that externally beating, bared heart, that naked blade,

a defenseless weapon, that gag, stifling

defeated uprisings of words, that animal tamed daily

by human teeth, that inhuman thing which grows in us and

outgrows us, that animal fed with the poisoned flesh of the body,

that red flag we swallow and spit out together with the blood, that

split in two surrounding us, that real lie that deceives,

that child, while learning the truth, truly lies

Vertaald door Boguław Rostworowski

Save Me, Guide Me

Save me, shield me, faithful journey,

from my own lies and from our era.

Protect me, you, Angel and Guardian,

but you, White Cloud, guide me.

Keep me from thunder, hurricane,

immaculate truth, give me light.

Don't overlook me, little dove,

when you send us a sign from the heights.

Forgive me, twilight,

don't pierce me, spear of nightmares.

Don't bless me with madness,

wake me, morning star.

Uit: Refiner's Fire

„RIDING IN a new 1938 Ford through the March countryside of North Carolina, Paul Levy was astonished by the tranquillity and depth of the blue above. Every tree and field was sheathed in gentle, clear, warm light. Smoke from clearing fires rose straight and slow, and the speed and air were perfect as the car wound through the back roads, sounding like a perpetual chain of little firecrackers. He was sixteen, the son of a Norfolk ship provisioner, and in love with the Navy and its ships. His father saw them as delivery points for canned tomatoes and brass polish, but his father's son was struck as if by lightning at the sight of one steaming up the roads, bent forward, pressing on-a squinting bridge, high black masts and angled guns, smoke, wake, urgency, and water pulsing off the bows. And when they turned, with claxons and bells, and the stern seeming to sweep like a skater over mottled ice, he saw in them the history for which his tranquil boyhood had been created. And in the North Carolina countryside, joyriding in his father's car solo for the first time, he could not help glancing through the windows at the sky and thinking of the sea.

By darkness when he returned to Norfolk he had decided to join the Navy, which, after a year or so of arguments and heated wanderings in and out of the dance places at Virginia Beach, he did. At first he went to sea as almost a child, and the little experience he had he used badly, awkwardly, making more mistakes than he could count. But at nineteen he was an ensign in the Battle of the Atlantic. He used to come home every few months or weeks, and each time he was more solid, stronger, wiser. Being on the sea was miserable, especially in winter, and it wore him down. But it developed into his calling and during the war he had been off Africa, Normandy, and Japan. Because he learned fast and loved the sea he became a lieutenant-commander by the end of 1946, taking a year's leave of absence to rest and prepare: he intended upon a career in the Navy, but did not want to be entirely brought up in it. He thought that a year of peace-maybe some farming, a trip across the country to San Francisco, a month at home-would do it. His father had become prosperous, especially since the fleet had not been decimated and would not be dismantled as had been the custom after other wars. They lived in a big house and it was planned that the younger sister and brother would go to college.“
