Uit: My Goodness

„Was there a specific event that precipitated my Saul of Tarsus-like conversion to the path of righteousness? Yes, there was. One night, in the fall of 1998, I purchased a ridiculously expensive tube of Tom's of Maine toothpaste. In doing so, I was out on a search-and-destroy mission. A couple of years earlier, my wife and I had been roped into attending a speech by Tom Chappell, founder and CEO of the world's most socially conscious toothpaste company For forty-five minutes, I had sat in my chair yawning and grimacing as Tom of Maine yammered on and on about his "mission," his "vocation," his "journey," his wife Kate's poetry, and his company's principled refusal to experiment on lab animals, as if anyone in the room cared one way or the other about the plight of a few disgusting rats. Remarking to my wife, "Where's Lee Harvey Oswald when you really need him?" I made a mental note to double back when I had some spare time and give Tom of Maine, Kate of Maine, and Anybody Else of Maine Who Thought They Were Better than Me Just Because They Didn't Experiment on Lab Animals a good journalistic thrashing. And now, two years later, that time had come.

On first glance, the toothpaste container seemed to provide me with plenty of material for target practice. Neatly tucked inside was a little note to consumers explaining, in typical blowhard fashion, the special social "mission" of the company. Then there was extensive information about the National Anti-Vivisection Society and the American Anti-Vivisection Society, including 800 numbers and website addresses where ordinary people could learn more about the systematic abuse of lab animals by Tom's of Maine's competitors. Finally, there was a grammatically disastrous hand-written note from a little girl named Kim telling Tom and Kate just how wonderful they were. As if they needed to be told.“

Uit: The Spider (Vertaald door Joe Bandel)

“This morning I saw a little performance. I went out into the hallway and waited while the maid was cleaning my room. In front of the little hall window hung a spiderweb. A fat Cross spider sat on it. Mrs. Dubonnet wouldn't allow them to be taken away. Spiders bring "luck" and she already had enough "bad luck" in her house.
Then I saw how another smaller spider cautiously ran around the net, a male. It carefully stepped a little way onto a quivering thread and moved toward the middle. The female moved, snapping the thread and pulling it back quickly to herself. The male ran to another thread and tried again to get closer.
Finally the strong female in the middle of the web consented to his courtship and didn't move anymore. The male plucked a strand lightly at first, then harder until the entire web trembled but the object of his worship remained motionless. He went there quickly and was infinitely more cautious the closer he got. The female received him quietly and unmoving, surrendering entirely, falling into his armorous embrace. They hung motionless for long minutes in the center of the web.
Then I saw how the male slowly freed himself, one leg at a time. It was as if he wanted to draw back and leave his companion alone in the afterglow of their lovemaking. Suddenly he was free and ran as quickly as possible to edge of the web. At the same moment the female quickly came to life and wildly chased him down. The weak male was lowering himself down onto a thread as his beloved caught up to him.
Both fell onto the windowsill as he struggled with all of his might to escape. It was too late. He was already trapped in the powerful grip of his companion. She carried him back onto the web, back to the middle, to the same place, that had just served as a bed for their voluptuous desire. Now it appeared much differently.“

Gifts

‘I will bring you love’, said the young lover,
‘A glad light to dance in your dark eye.
Pendants I will bring of the white bone,
And gay parrot feathers to deck your hair.’

But she only shook her head.

‘I will put a child in your arms,’ he said,
‘Will be a great headman, great rain-maker.
I will make remembered songs about you
That all the tribes in all the wandering camps
Will sing forever.’

But she was not impressed.

‘I will bring you the still moonlight on the lagoon,
And steal for you the singing of all the birds;
I will bring the stars of heaven to you,
And put the bright rainbow into your hand.’

‘No’, she said, ‘bring me tree-grubs.

The Past

Let no one say the past is dead.
The past is all about us and within.
Haunted by tribal memories, I know
This little now, this accidental present
Is not the all of me, whose long making
Is so much of the past …
a thousand thousand camp fires in the forest
Are in my blood.
Let none tell me the past is wholly gone.
Now is so small a part of time, so small a part
Of all the race years that have moulded me

June

I gazed upon the glorious sky

And the green mountains round,

And thought that when I came to lie

At rest within the ground,

"Twere pleasant, that in flowery June,

When brooks send up a cheerful tune,

And groves a joyous sound,

The sexton's hand, my grave to make,

The rich, green mountain-turf should break.

A cell within the frozen mould,

A coffin borne through sleet,

And icy clods above it rolled,

While fierce the tempests beat--

Away!--I will not think of these--

Blue be the sky and soft the breeze,

Earth green beneath the feet,

And be the damp mould gently pressed

Into my narrow place of rest.

There through the long, long summer hours,

The golden light should lie,

And thick young herbs and groups of flowers

Stand in their beauty by.

The oriole should build and tell

His love-tale close beside my cell;

The idle butterfly

Should rest him there, and there be heard

The housewife bee and humming-bird.

And what if cheerful shouts at noon

Come, from the village sent,

Or songs of maids, beneath the moon

With fairy laughter blent?

And what if, in the evening light,

Betrothed lovers walk in sight

Of my low monument?

I would the lovely scene around

Might know no sadder sight nor sound.

I know that I no more should see

The season's glorious show,

Nor would its brightness shine for me,

Nor its wild music flow;

But if, around my place of sleep,

The friends I love should come to weep,

They might not haste to go.

Soft airs, and song, and light, and bloom

Should keep them lingering by my tomb.

These to their softened hearts should bear

The thought of what has been,

And speak of one who cannot share

The gladness of the scene;

Whose part, in all the pomp that fills

The circuit of the summer hills,

Is that his grave is green;

And deeply would their hearts rejoice

To hear again his living voice.

Uit: Het Land van Herkomst

„September.

Beauty and the Illiterate

Often, in the Repose of Evening her soul took a lightness from

the mountains across, although the day was harsh and

                  tomorrow foreign.

But, when it darkened well and out came the priest's hand over

the little garden of the dead, She

Alone, Standing, with the few domestics of the night—the blowing

rosemary and the murmur of smoke from the kilns—

                  at sea's entry, wakeful

Otherly beauty!

Only the waves' words half-guessed or in a rustle, and others

resembling the dead's that startle in the cypress, strange

zodiacs that lit up her magnetic moon-turned head.

                  And one

Unbelievable cleanliness allowed, to great depth in her, the real

                  landscape to be seen,

Where, near the river, the dark ones fought against the Angel,

exactly showing how she's born, Beauty

Or what we otherwise call tear.

And long as her thinking lasted, you could feel it overflow the

glowing sight bitterly in the eyes and the huge, like an

                  ancient prostitute's, cheekbones

Stretched to the extreme points of the Large Dog and of the Virgin.

"Far from the pestilential city I dreamed of her deserted place

where a tear may have no meaning and the only light be

from the flame that ravishes all that for me exists.

"Shoulder-to-shoulder under what will be, sworn to extreme silence

and the co-ruling of the stars,

"As if I didn't know yet, the illiterate, that there exactly, in extreme

silence are the most repellent thuds

"And that, since it became unbearable inside a man's chest, solitude

                  dispersed and seeded stars!"

  “Drinking the sun of Corinth…”

Drinking the sun of Corinth
Reading the marble ruins
Striding across vineyards and seas
Sighting along the harpoon
A votive fish that slips away
I found the leaves that the sun’s psalm memorizes
The living land that passion joys in opening.

I drink water, cut fruit,
Thrust my hand into the wind’s foliage
The lemon trees water the summer pollen
The green birds tear my dreams
I leave with a glance
A wide glance in which the world is recreated
Beautiful from the beginning to the dimensions of the heart!

Jongensdroom

Cham Nights

The wolf pack holds its pace
In the snowflake-salted night,
Holds its pace near the herders’ silent camps,
A savage pack from the Cham forests.
No howl, no bleat is heard,
No fires to be seen where the shepherds once dozed,
Only the endless sea waves lashing at the banks,
Only the moon, a lone sheep escaped from a pen,
Erring o’er solitary meadows in the clouds.
The wolf pack holds its pace,
Hearkens famished in the snow-dappled night.

Where are you, shepherds in your sheepskin cloaks?
Where are your flocks bleating in the meadows?
Where are your lambs and the clanking bells?
Where the sheepdogs growling like lions?
Grey ones, white ones, wolf dogs – our ancient foes?
Where are they, let us show them our pitchforks,
How we struggle to survive.

Ravaged Chameria is hushed in the darkness,
Ceaseless waves whip the submissive cliffs,
Resounding far and wide in the Ionian night,
To the howl of those starving wolves.

Uit: Fellow Travelers

„The party was making Tim feel nostalgic, and thus a bit foolish, since he’d been, after all, only a summer hire allowed to stay on through September—or, more exactly, this coming Friday afternoon. They’d put him in the city room, even though he’d never been to Washington before June and knew nothing about the District as a place where many citizens lived life quite oblivious to the federal government. His placement, he’d come to understand, was typical of the Star, a paper both venerable and feckless, produced each evening by an eccentric, occasionally brilliant staff. He had liked it here and would miss the place, but given the shortness of his tenure he wasn’t sure he should even take a piece of the cake once it got cut.
A small stack of the paper’s early edition lay atop an open drawer of the file cabinet he was leaning against. Ambassador Bohlen was flying home from Moscow to talk with Secretary Dulles, and this morning Louis Budenz, a Fordham professor and former red, had testified to the McCarthy committee that, in his “humble opinion,” parts of an Army-commissioned pamphlet about Siberia—something put together to educate the Far Eastern Command—contained large chunks of Soviet-sympathizing stuff that had been taken, without footnotes or refutation, from Communist writers.
Cecil Holland, the reporter who’d written the Budenz story, now saw Tim reading it and asked, “Laughlin, you just graduated from Fordham, didn’t you? Ever study with this guy who says the army’s been indoctrinating itself?”
Tim smiled. “I had somebody else for Economics, Mr. Holland.” He grimaced. “I think I got a C-plus.” Holland laughed and walked over to claim a piece of the cake that had finally been sliced.
At Fordham, Tim had mostly studied American history and English literature, and his plan in coming to Washington remained, even now, to combine his major and minor into a job writing for a politician, though throughout the city’s hot, depopulated summer he’d made little headway finding anything on Capitol Hill. Well, he’d have plenty of time and motivation come Friday afternoon!“

Dagen voorbij

De langzame opstanding van het koren
onder de hand van de wind.
Door zeegroen waas van jonge korenaren
zien blauwe bloemen, als door morgendauw.

O dagen, die voorbij zijt, gij ligt begraven
onder blauwe luchten en zomerblond,
onder golvend koren.

En daar staan, als grote, blanke marmerbeelden,
de stille witte wolken op uw graf;
hun ogen zijn gesloten voor hun dromen.

Dagen voorbij, die slaapt in lichte nissen
van zomerzon, heel 't landschap is uw graf
en kapellen zijn gebeiteld in het blauw
boven rode korenrozen.

Uit: The Rose of the World

„Those questions are not confined to the realms of war and politics. But nothing can shake my conviction that the most formidable dangers that threaten humanity, both now and for centuries to come, are a great suicidal war and an absolute global dictatorship. Perhaps, in our century, humanity will avert a third world war or, at the very least, survive it, as it survived the First and Second World Wars. Perhaps it will outlive, somehow or other, a dictatorship even more enveloping and merciless than the one we in Russia outlived. It may even be that in two or three hundred years new dangers for the people of Earth will appear, dangers different but no less dire than a dictatorship or a great war. It is possible, even probable. But no effort of the mind, no imagination or intuition, is capable of conjecturing a future danger that would not be connected, somehow or other, with one of these two principal dangers: the physical destruction of humanity through a war, and the spiritual death of humanity through an absolute global dictatorship.

This book is directed, first and foremost, against the two basic, supreme evils of war and dictatorship. It is directed against them not as a simple warning, nor as a satire that unmasks their true nature, nor as a sermon. The most biting satire and the most fiery sermon are useless if they only rail against evil and prove that good is good and bad is bad. They are useless if they are not based on a worldview, global teaching, and program of action that, spread from mind to mind and will to will, would be capable of averting these evils.

The purpose of my life has been to share my experience with others-to shed light on the future panorama of history and metahistory, on the branching chain of alternatives we face or are bound to face, and on the landscape of variomaterial worlds that are closely linked with ours through good and evil. I have tried, and still try, to fulfill that task through fiction and poetry, but the limitations of those genres have prevented me from disclosing these ideas precisely and intelligibly in their entirety.“
