„Oh God. Not another strangely dressed opera freak with bushy hair burgeoning from a side-part. "Mum, I've told you. I don't need to be fixed up with ..."
"Now come along, darling. Una and Geoffrey have been holding the New Year buffet since you were running round the lawn with no clothes on! Of course you're going to come. And you'll be able to use your new suitcase."
11:45 p.m.
Ugh. First day of New Year has been day of horror. Cannot quite believe I am once again starting the year in a single bed in my parents' house. It is too humiliating at my age. I wonder if they'll smell it if I have a fag out of the window. Having skulked at home all day, hoping hangover would clear, I eventually gave up and set off for the Turkey Curry Buffet far too late. When I got to the Alconburys' and rang their entire-tune-of-town-hall-clock-style doorbell I was still in a strange world of my own--nauseous, vile-headed, acidic. I was also suffering from road-rage residue after inadvertently getting on to the M6 instead of the M1 and having to drive halfway to Birmingham before I could find anywhere to turn round. I was so furious I kept jamming my foot down to the floor on the accelerator pedal to give vent to my feelings, which is very dangerous. I watched resignedly as Una Alconbury's form--intriguingly deformed through the ripply glass door--bore down on me in a fuchsia two-piece.

"Bridget! We'd almost given you up for lost! Happy New Year! Just about to start without you."
She seemed to manage to kiss me, get my coat off, hang it over the banister, wipe her lipstick off my cheek and make me feel incredibly guilty all in one movement, while I leaned against the ornament shelf for support.“

Uit: Uncle (Vertaald door Eric Dickens)

„The chain led back to the spring of 1941, that is to say when the order had arrived in Tartu from a certain adviser to Herr Litzmann at the General Commission in Tallinn to swiftly pack together and transport, in part to Tallinn, in part to country manor houses, such-and-such valuable collections housed in the University Library. Those items most valuable from a German cultural (and, consequently, global cultural) point of view were to go to Tallinn, those of lesser importance to the stone cellars of suitable manor houses throughout the Province of Tartumaa.
The order to set to work the appropriate librarians plus those assistants they had come from the Vice-Chancellor of the university. Carpenters had begun (swearing as always) knocking together crates, heads of department (anxious as always) bustling about and directing operations, bibliographers (critical and whispering as always) making book inventories and packers-cum-bearers (sweating and sniffing as always) lugging piles of books and manuscripts down creaking flights of stairs. Each, of course, according to his nature. Perfunctorily and smoothly, assiduously and laboriously, thoughtlessly and twitteringly, inquisitively and mutteringly. Some hurried, others dawdled, some made sure the order was carried out to the letter while others again tried to find the easiest way of wriggling out of it. For there were two, even three attitudes for the order and as many reasons for carrying it out.

Some wished to do everything correctly. More rapidly or more slowly but above all, correctly. Others were indifferent to results as long as they got the mark notes and penni coins at the end of the day to pay for the items printed on their ration coupons. A third group which formed after much cursing and whispering among themselves, a group which grew even larger after the thin cigarettes and dishwater coffee of the lunch break, well, this third group began to hatch their own plans.“

Uit: Sein Geist zerriß . . .

Uit: Two Kinds

„My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. You could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get good retirement. You could buy a house with almost no money down. You could become rich. You could become instantly famous.
"Of course, you can be a prodigy, too," my mother told me when I was nine. "You can be best anything. What does Auntie Lindo know? Her daughter, she is only best tricky."
America was where all my mother's hopes lay. She had come to San Francisco in 1949 after losing everything in China: her mother and father, her home, her first husband, and two daughters, twin baby girls. But she never looked back with regret. Things could get better in so many ways.

We didn't immediately pick the right kind of prodigy. At first my mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple. We'd watch Shirley's old movies on TV as though they were training films. My mother would poke my arm and say, "Ni kan.You watch." And I would see Shirley tapping her feet, or singing a sailor song, or pursing her lips into a very round O while saying "Oh, my goodness."
Ni kan," my mother said, as Shirley's eyes flooded with tears. "You already know how. Don't need talent for crying!"
Soon after my mother got this idea about Shirley Temple, she took me to the beauty training school in the Mission District and put me in the hands of a student who could barely hold the scissors without shaking. Instead of getting big fat curls, I emerged with an uneven mass of crinkly black fuzz. My mother dragged me off to the bathroom and tried to wet down my hair.
"You look like a Negro Chinese," she lamented, as if I had done this on purpose.“

Uit: The Last Sleep of Reason (Vertaald door Dmitri Priven)

“The detective was embarrassed but expressed hope that the size of his thighs might still be sufficient for a record.

"You think you're the only one, don't you?!" the assistant exploded. "Damn it, legs like yours are a dime a dozen!"

An investigation of sorts was carried out, at the end of which nurse Petrovna was fired in a twinkling of an eye for taking the matter into her own hands. Sinichkin saw her baffled back in the window and felt sad for the little old lady who had worked in the hospital for forty-five years: her career was ending so pitiably.

In the meantime, Volodya's legs continued to shrink; they were withering by the minute, and by the time the Guinness Book of Records man with his film crew arrived, they had turned into a pair of just overly fat limbs, which did not impress Mr. Zhechkov at all.

"What's with the legs?" inquired the representative.

"Got flat," replied one of the doctors.

"Well, no legs - no record!" said Zhechka indifferently, snapped his fingers and showed the film crew to the door.

"Wait a minute!" the acting head physician was beginning to panic. "You saw them yourself, didn't you?"

"I did," agreed the representative. "But we've got to have the proof! And you haven't got it! If the legs swell up again, call me. I'll come right away!"

Having said that, the Bulgarian headed off.

"Get him ready for discharge!" ordered the acting head, giving Sinichkin a hateful eye.

"What are you talking about!" protested the detective. "I can't even walk!"

"Ten officers are wounded in this city each and every day! You are taking up the bed of one of our heroes!"

Uit: The End of Major Combat Operations

„XIX.

What the cook thinks of the press.

6am, surrounded by Iraqis, sixty-six hundred miles from Birmingham, pouring eggs out of a carton, in trailer next to a mortar crater.

Reporter: “You’re the cook huh? That’s a pretty Good job, I guess. So did you want to be the cook, or how do you get that job?”

XXIV.

Everyone had talismans. The story was such a cliché that I came to think of knowing what the soldiers carried for luck as a kind of reporter talisman. A mental rabbit foot, reassurance that you were not part of the circus, that in fact you were standing outside the tent and not responsible, somehow, for the all misunderstandings. As if, because you were not shooting, you were not as important (and therefore unimportant) as every GI. So, get this, I met a guy who carried a page from a little bible in a pocket on every limb.

More likely to save you than your talisman was your body armor, but lot of guys said that if it was up to them they wouldn’t wear the stuff at all. No one could outrun a ball bearing, but the thinking still was that it slowed you down. It was heavy, uncomfortable. Everyone always did wear it, though, and there were a lot of stories about how well it worked. One was about a sergeant who was walking in line through a palm grove when an insurgent popped up, maybe fifteen feet ahead of him and fired off a burst of rounds square into his chest. The sergeant went down, all the air blown out of him, but the armor stopped the rounds. His friends, not far down the road, were still lining the shooter up when the sergeant took out the insurgent from the ground, where he lay on his back. But as one Corporal pointed out to me as we talked about IEDs: no body armor on your legs.“

Uit: A Mercy

„Don't be afraid. My telling can't hurt you in spite of what I have done and I promise to lie quietly in the dark--weeping perhaps or occasionally seeing the blood once more--but I will never again unfold my limbs to rise up and bare teeth. I explain. You can think what I tell you a confession, if you like, but one full of curiosities familiar only in dreams and during those moments when a dog's profile plays in the steam of a kettle. Or when a corn-husk doll sitting on a shelf is soon splaying in the corner of a room and the wicked of how it got there is plain. Stranger things happen all the time everywhere. You know. I know you know. One question is who is responsible? Another is can you read? If a pea hen refuses to brood I read it quickly and, sure enough, that night I see a minha mãe standing hand in hand with her little boy, my shoes jamming the pocket of her apron. Other signs need more time to understand. Often there are too many signs, or a bright omen clouds up too fast. I sort them and try to recall, yet I know I am missing much, like not reading the garden snake crawling up to the door saddle to die. Let me start with what I know for certain.
The beginning begins with the shoes. When a child I am never able to abide being barefoot and always beg for shoes, anybody's shoes, even on the hottest days. My mother, a minha mãe, is frowning, is angry at what she says are my prettify ways. Only bad women wear high heels. I am dangerous, she says, and wild but she relents and lets me wear the throwaway shoes from Senhora's house, pointy-toe, one raised heel broke, the other worn and a buckle on top.”

Bezine, benzine

Merk dagen van andere kant
slaap als mensen waken, werk
bij het woelen van volk in volle
verre wijken, uitgeweken leef ik

in mijn coole wagen zakenblauw
de hits die me raken te draaien
bij het steady cruisen door dit
bloeddronken continent

zoek ik niets, verwacht nog minder
dan een vroeg geruimd graf
honden die mijn botten knauwen
en een vrouw die niet vergeten kan.

Hollandse wei

en richtten onze kamers in tot dagelijkse nacht;

Sieben gehen sieben,

Wie nach dem Sieben geblieben.

Misschien is ‘t goed

ach maar hoe zal men ooit verklaren

„O Sun, great Oriental, my proud mind's golden cap,

I love to wear you cocked askew, to play and burst

in song throughout our lives, and so rejoice our hearts.

Good is this earth, it suits us! Like the global grape

it hangs, dear God, in the blue air and sways in the gale,

nibbled by all the birds and spirits of the four winds.

Come, let's start nibbling too and so refresh our minds!

Between two throbbing temples in the mind's great wine vats

I tread on the crisp grapes until the wild must boil

sand my mind laughs and steams within the upright day.

Has the earth sprouted wings and sails, has my mind swayed

until black-eyed Necessity got drunk and burst in song?

Above me spreads the raging sky, below me swoops

my belly, a white gull that breasts the cooling waves;

my nostrils fill with salty spray, the billows burst

swiftly against my back, rush on, and I rush after.

Great Sun, who pass on high yet watch all things below,

I see the sun-drenched cap of the great castle-wrecker:

let's kick and scuff it round to see where it will take us!“

Learn, lads, that Time has cycles and that Fate has wheel

sand that the mind of man sits high and twirls them round;

come quick, let's spin the world about and send it tumbling!“
