Non omnis moriar*

Soms, als een distel door dik asfalt,
barst er een regel poëzie
de taal van mensen in.

Zo werd de Dapperstraat een plek
van hoge adel en duurt de Mei
al meer dan honderd jaar.

Zo wijs ik soms mijn kleine zoon
des avonds op een fonkelend verschijnsel
en roep: O Venus, felle star.

Hij corrigeert mij wel, maar geeft
het later toch misschien weer door.
Het lijkt zo'n magere troost,

te bedenken dat lang na je dood
een jonge vrouw een woord van jou
nog op de tong kan nemen.

Het is ook wel een weelderig genoegen,
niet geheel dood te hoeven.

* niet geheel zal ik sterven

O

O, dat ik ooit nog eens
een vers met o beginnen mocht,
dat het dan ongezocht een ode
werd waarin zeg maar een dode
dichteres tot leven kwam
ofwel een warm lief lijf
tot marmer werd waardoor
voor wie daarvoor gevoelig is
een adem ging als was het
leven nu voorgoed betrapt.

Maar nee, wat bij mij ingaat
moet bezinken,
verdicht zich tot een sprake-
loos substraat
dat roerig wordt en uit wil breken
en soms vermomd de mond verlaat.

0, klonk het nog eens ongehinderd.

Österreich ist schön

Österreich? Ist das schön. Und hundertmal

& überhaupt. Österreich ist schön, und

schon schön ist Österreich. Ich bin hundertmal

verliebt in Österreich.

Ja. So ist das

mit Österreich. Durch und durch schön. Hundertmal.

Uit: The Devil's Larder

„One night when there are guests and all the wine has gone, they put the can into the candlelight amongst the debris of their meal and play the guessing game. An aphrodisiac, perhaps; "Let's try." A plague. Should they open up and spoon it out? A tune, canned music, something never heard before that would rise from the open can, evaporate, and not be heard again. The elixir of youth. The human soup of DNA. A devil or a god?

It's tempting just to stab it with a knife. Wound it. See how it bleeds. What is the colour of the blood? What is its taste?

We all should have a can like this. Let it rust. Let the rims turn rough and brown. Lift it up and shake it if you want. Shake its sweetness or its bitterness. Agitate the juicy heaviness within. The gravy heaviness. The brine, the soup, the oil, the sauce. The heaviness. The choice is wounding it with knives, or never touching it again.

"This is for the angel," Grandma used to say, tearing off a strip of dough for me to take into the yard. "Leave it somewhere he can see." Sometimes I left the strip on the street wall. Sometimes I draped it on the washing line. Sometimes I put it on the outside windowsill and hid behind the kitchen curtain beads to spot the angel in the yard.“

„When the French nation gradually came into existence among the ruins of the Roman civilization in Gaul, a new language was at the same time slowly evolved. This language, in spite of the complex influences which went to the making of the nationality of France, was of a simple origin.

With a very few exceptions, every word in the French vocabulary comes straight from the Latin. The influence of the pre-Roman Celts is almost imperceptible; while the number of words introduced by the Frankish conquerors amounts to no more than a few hundreds. Thus the French tongue presents a curious contrast to that of England. With us, the Saxon invaders obliterated nearly every trace of the Roman occupation; but though their language triumphed at first, it was eventually affected in the profoundest way by Latin influences; and the result has been that English literature bears in all its phases the imprint of a double origin. French literature, on the other hand, is absolutely homogeneous.

How far this is an advantage or the reverse it would be difficult to say; but the important fact for the English reader to notice is that this great difference does exist between the French language and his

own. The complex origin of the English tongue has enabled English writers to obtain those effects of diversity, of contrast, of imaginative strangeness, which have played such a dominating part in our

literature. The genius of the French language, descended from its single Latin stock, has triumphed most in the contrary direction—in simplicity, in unity, in clarity, and in restraint.“

Skunk Hour

(for Elizabeth Bishop)

Nautilus Island's hermit

heiress still lives through winter in her Spartan cottage;

her sheep still graze above the sea.

Her son's a bishop. Her farmer is first selectman in our village;

she's in her dotage.

Thirsting for

the hierarchic privacy

of Queen Victoria's century

she buys up all

the eyesores facing her shore,

and lets them fall.

The season's ill--

we've lost our summer millionaire,

who seemed to leap from an L. L. Bean

catalogue. His nine-knot yawl

was auctioned off to lobstermen.

A red fox stain covers Blue Hill.

And now our fairy

decorator brightens his shop for fall;

his fishnet's filled with orange cork,

orange, his cobbler's bench and awl;

there is no money in his work,

he'd rather marry.

One dark night,

my Tudor Ford climbed the hill's skull;

I watched for love-cars. Lights turned down,

they lay together, hull to hull,

where the graveyard shelves on the town....

My mind's not right.

A car radio bleats,

"Love, O careless Love...." I hear

my ill-spirit sob in each blood cell,

as if my hand were at its throat...

I myself am hell;

nobody's here--

only skunks, that search

in the moonlight for a bite to eat.

They march on their solves up Main Street:

white stripes, moonstruck eyes' red fire

under the chalk-dry and spar spire

of the Trinitarian Church.

I stand on top

of our back steps and breathe the rich air--

a mother skunk with her column of kittens swills the garbage pail.

She jabs her wedge-head in a cup

of sour cream, drops her ostrich tail,

and will not scare.

Orchard Trees, January

It's not the case, though some might wish it so

Who from a window watch the blizzard blow

White riot through their branches vague and stark,

That they keep snug beneath their pelted bark.

They take affliction in until it jells

To crystal ice between their frozen cells,

And each of them is inwardly a vault

Of jewels rigorous and free of fault,

Unglimpsed until in May it gently bears

A sudden crop of green-pronged solitaires.

Exeunt

Piecemeal the summer dies;

At the field's edge a daisy lives alone;

A last shawl of burning lies

On a gray field-stone.

All cries are thin and terse;

The field has droned the summer's final mass;

A cricket like a dwindled hearse

Crawls from the dry grass.

Uit: Invisible Man

“I spoke automatically and with such fervor that I did not realize that the men were still talking and laughing until my dry mouth, filling up with blood from the cut, almost strangled me. I coughed, wanting to stop and go to one of the tall brass, sand-filled spittoons to relieve myself, but a few of the men, especially the superintendent, were listening and I was afraid. So I gulped it down, blood, saliva and all, and continued. (What powers of endurance I had during those days! What enthusiasm! What a belief in the rightness of things!) I spoke even louder in spite of the pain. But still they talked and still they laughed, as though deaf with cotton in dirty ears. So I spoke with greater emotional emphasis. I closed my ears and swallowed blood until I was nauseated. The speech seemed a hundred times as long as before, but I could not leave out a single word. All had to be said, each memorized nuance considered, rendered. Nor was that all. Whenever I uttered a word of three or more syllables a group of voices would yell for me to repeat it. I used the phrase "social responsibility" and they yelled:

"What's that word you say, boy?"

"Social responsibility," I said.

"What?"

"Social..."

"Louder."

"... responsibility."

"More!"

"Respon-"

"Repeat!"

"-sibility."

The room filled with the uproar of laughter until, no doubt distracted by having to gulp down my blood, I made a mistake and yelled a phrase I had often seen denounced in newspaper editorials, heard debated in private.

"Social..."

"What?" they yelled.

"... equality-"

Uit: Lion's Blood

„The sun was a molten eye, gazing down from the heavens without malice or mercy, unfettered by clouds. It baked against Aidan's skin. In a few minutes he would dip beneath the Lady's waves again, seeking the shelter of her embrace.
Mahon lifted his flute to his lips and coaxed it softly, gently, as if afraid of scaring away the fish. His eyes glowed with humor.
"What have you, boyo?" his father asked, taking his pipe from his lips. Aidan leaned farther out, pressing his thin arms against the coracle's rim. He peered more carefully now, straining to see through the chop. "Something shining in the water, Da."
The Lute River, usually referred to as the Lady, was clear as glass here. Upstream a bit, clouds of silt from an inland mudslide darkened her depths. Here, fed by a thousand eastern tributaries, the waters had healed themselves, as if loathing the idea of gifting the distant ocean with less than her best. The Lady's blue ribbon had fed and nurtured the O'Deres for three hundred years.
Mahon gazed up at the sky, shielding his eyes with one broad hand. "Well, it's a hot one. Maybe time for another dip?" Aidan needed no further encouragement. He slipped off his rough wool shirt and clambered over the side, careful not to tip the boat.
The water parted to receive him then closed over his head, sealing away the music of air and bird and flute, replacing them with the Lady's eternal rushing murmur. She was cool and bracing.
Aidan was a strong swimmer—half eel and half boy, his mother claimed—and oriented himself quickly in the water. Avoiding the nets was easy if you kept your eyes open. It would be humiliating to be caught in them; his father might be forced to draw him up and free him by knife, possibly endangering the day's catch.“

Our mind is a virgin forest of killed friends

Our mind is a virgin forest of killed friends.

And if I talk to you with fairy tales and parables

it is because you listen to it more sweetly, and you can't talk of horror because it's alive

because it doesn't speak and moves

it drips the day, it drips on sleep

like a pain reminding of evils.

To speak of heroes to speak of heroes: Michalis

who left with open wounds from hospital

may have talked of heroes when, that night

he was dragging his foot in the blacked-out city,

was screaming feeling our pain 'in the dark

we go, in the dark we move...'

Heroes move in the dark.

Shakespeare

Shakespeare created the world in seven days.

On the first day he made the sky, the mountains and the depths of the soul.

On the second day he made rivers, seas, oceans

And other emotions ---

And he gave them to Hamlet, Julius Ceasar, Anthony, Cleopatra and Ophelia,

To Othello and others,

To be master over them, with their descendants,

For ever and ever.

On the third day he gathered all the people

And taught them to savour:

The taste of happiness, love, despair,

The taste of jealousy, fame and so on,

Until all tasting was finished.

Then some late-comers arrived.

The creator patted their heads with compassion,

Saying the only roles left for them were

The literary critics

Who could then demolish his work.

The fourth and fifth day he reserved for laughter.

He allowed clowns

To tumble,

He allowed kings, emperors

And other unfortunates to amuse themselves.

On the sixth day he completed the administration:

He set up a tempest

He taught King Lear

How to wear a straw crown.

As there were a few leftovers from the creation of the world

He designed Richard III.

On the seventh day he took stock to see what else might be done.

And Shakespeare thought that after so much effort

He deserved to see a performance;

But first, as he was overtired,

He went to die a little.

A Spell before Winter

After the red leaf and the gold have gone,

Brought down by the wind, then by hammering rain

Bruised and discolored, when October's flame

Goes blue to guttering in the cusp, this land

Sinks deeper into silence, darker into shade.

There is a knowledge in the look of things,

The old hills hunch before the north wind blows.

Now I can see certain simplicities

In the darkening rust and tarnish of the time,

And say over the certain simplicities,

The running water and the standing stone,

The yellow haze of the willow and the black

Smoke of the elm, the silver, silent light

Where suddenly, readying toward nightfall,

The sumac's candelabrum darkly flames.

And I speak to you now with the land's voice,

It is the cold, wild land that says to you

A knowledge glimmers in the sleep of things:

The old hills hunch before the north wind blows.

The Beautiful Lawn Sprinkler

What gives it power makes it change its mind

At each extreme, and lean its rising rain

Down low, first one and then the other way;

In which exchange humility and pride

Reverse, forgive, arise, and die again,

Wherefore it holds at both ends of the day

The rainbow in its scattering grains of spray.

Last Night

Last night I laid within your continent
Sought salvation from frustration
with in your loving nation
found the true meaning of homeland
when you let me inland
Swahili tongue knew I hadn’t been there before
kissed for me to stay awhile
I did you one better and stayed forever, in your country
Then you let me tap your virgin drum
releasing echoes of me being free
Free to run through your countryside
touching jasmine, dropping weed
Free to nibble on your Nigeria
Blow on your Botswana
Eat your Opia til there is no more Opia left
Won’t be any leftovers when I’m done
Won’t be anything when I’m done
Just remembrance of that night when I laid within your continent
seeking salvation from frustration within your loving nation
and that’s all we’ll have
That, and a few thousand orphans to read this poem
