The pigeons fly

The pigeons fly,
the pigeons come down...
***

Prepare a place for me to rest.
I love you unto weariness,
your morning is fruit for songs
and this evening is precious gold
the shadows are strong as marble.
When I see myself,
it is hanging upon a neck that embraces only the clouds,
you are the air that undresses in front of me like tears of the grape,
you are the beginning of the family of waves held by the shore.
I love you, you are the beginning of my soul, and you are the end...
the pigeons fly
the pigeons come down...
***

I am for my lover I am. And my lover is for his wandering star
Sleep my love
on you my hair braids, peace be with you...
the pigeons fly
the pigeons come down...
***

Oh, my love, where are you taking me away from my parents,
from my trees, small bed and from my weariness,
from my visions, from my light, from my memories and pleasant evenings,
from my dress and my shyness,
where are you taking me my love, where?
You take me, set me on fire, and then leave me
in the vain path of the air
that is a sin ... that is a sin...
the pigeons fly
the pigeons come down...
***

My love, I fear the silence of your hands.
Scratch my blood so the horse can sleep.
My love, female birds fly to you
take me as a wife and breathe.
My love I will stay and breasts will grow for you
The guards take me out of your way
my love, I will cry upon you, upon you, upon you.
because you are die surface of my sky.
My body is the land,
the place for you...
the pigeons fly
the pigeons come down...

From "India"

I

India begins with dreams about setting out
on an eastbound journey. These dreams have plots, they are
like a film through which one wanders like a gallant hero.
You simply hear the trumpet or the gong, or the ringing of water,
or a voice that whispers, "Get up and go!" — but you
are not sure if you heard it with your ear or your heart.

India is not exactly a peninsula. It is a continent
that borders Nothingness. Neither atlas nor dictionary
takes into account the world's being surrounded by the Nile,
or the stars in the sky being but a performance
in God's theater. And it looks like the time hasn't come yet:
it's easier for us to consider the plane a sphere. A body.

We consider a sphere that which rests like a flatbread.
But you, having heard the harsh commanding "march!"
procure a sword and set out eastward — to die.
You put together a squadron of merry and mean cutthroats;
along the way they sing somewhat like
the angels in their nighttime cherubic concerts.

The plane's made of deserts and kingdoms, mountain ranges and cities
above which is but the thick atmosphere that's
seven heavens high--and what discord or manna can come out of them!
Only having lost the horses, the friends, all the carts with supplies,
through persistence like that of the twisted and battered grapevine
you'll make your way to the place where one hears the word "rahmanna."

Was?

A Poem in the Manner of Karacaoglan

VI

No one celebrates the Elbistan meadow.

It opens its arms to the wind like dawn, a refined gazelle.

Summer brings the balmy weather of the time I knew,

Like a nightingale singing in fresh, hanging grapes.

Hesitant morning sets the purple hyacinth free.

Delight I've never known extracts lies from my heart

And it enjoys, for a time, the quince in the branches.

A crane flaps its wings, sapling of dawn.

I know well Ismail Bey's high plateau with its cold running waters,

The rose's branch, as tall as four men, that winds around the cypress,

High up and coiled in the fog, with an aroma like wine.

There you can see the heavy-headed pool quake

Like purple clouds that deceive the birds.

It's time for the ant that never knew childhood to grow up,

The sun droning like a cicada, an idol like a man,

The shouting flower of my freedom, respected.

The weeds whisper into the ear of the stream,

The heart's flower comes down to earth from the heights.

One can see a falcon's nest in the Koja Binboğa,

Its morning flowers dazzle the eye,

They pulse in the heart of wind like the chiming of a bell.
In the moonlight dragons descend with their eyes full of stars

To the valley where thousands of flowers play . . .

Tonight, tonight let's sleep in the Binboğa, my horse.

Toward The Future

My infinite soul is already full

With confusing songs and also noises;
My electric heart is already full

With inflamed currents.

My soul has become a radio station

For the entire world and all of mankind;

And it is so high, my soul's station,

Like Massis so high, and also so firm -

Mighty, terrible!

In these fervent days, wind-driven, confused -

The song of million hearts distant or near

It is now my fate to sing it today;

My multimillion, ten thousands of friends'

Joy of today and their great flight as well -

Today it's my song's turn to cast the fate

Of the coming days.

Therefore this is why

As a gigantic, as an Eiffelian

Enormous tower,

At past and coming centuries' threshold

Mighty, high above,

I am now standing with my entire height

And I am singing.

And my soul is now a radio station,

It is now sending its fiery red song

Far and far away; -

To all of the hearts, who live and exist

In all directions.

My soul is singing, sounding fervently.

I know in front of my song of today -

Facing the red sparks of my soul as well -

Each single soul is a radio station,

Wherever it is!

Every soul which lives, each soul which exists,

And is carrying upon its own wings

The same great concept, the immense concept

Of these fervent days, -

The radiant concept of these fervent days.

Every single soul,

Which is today with its wings of iron

Ringing and rustling -

And is searching for new rest and lulling

In the uproar of million rebel wings...

Do you know, that now

Here -

In my ruined country of Nayiri

And far - far away -

Inside red Moscow,

At yellow Tibet,

At San Francisco, enormous London

And at Singapore -

In all locations, in all directions

The world is pregnant with a novel song?

Far away- and near

Inside the mine pits,

At the factories,

In the wide steppes and in the forests -

In all locations, in all directions,

My brothers, thousands, who're lulled with the song

Of iron and of bronze, of the soil and mines!

Who possesses our will of fire today,

Our blood-red power

Our fervent fortune

So universal?

Who has them today...?

It's us who are new, we're tens of thousands!

Like an enormous disc made of iron

The brave will of our thousands of brothers,

So universal -

We have already thrown with immense force

Toward all the winds of the coming days,

Toward - the Future...

Sommernachts über Land

Von Rüstern schauert die hängende

Ernte der Traurigkeit;

Schon steigt aus Wurzeln die drängende.

die untere Ewigkeit.

Aus Brunnen krümmt sich der tastende

Verwesende Nebel und klimmt.

Aus Löchern kommt das fastende

Grauen und nimmt und nimmt.

Hat der Horizont seine klagenden

Harfen zum Klagen gebracht?

Die Erde hat ach die tragenden

Schollen zu Wolken gemacht.

Die Nähe voll bitter steigender

Schluchzer wird ungewiß.

Der Himmel steht wie ein schweigender

Berg der Kümmernis.

Der Kümmernisberg steht gläsern still,

Vor alle Ziele gestellt.

Und wer in süßere Meilen nun will,

Uit: You Shall Know Our Velocity!

"When?" said Hand.

"A week from now," I said.

"The seventeenth?"

"Right."

"This seventeenth."

"Right.""Jesus."

"Can you get the week off?"

"I don't know," Hand asked. "Can I ask a dumb question?"

"What?"

"Why not this summer?"

"Because."

"Or next fall?"

"Come on."

"What?"

"I'll pay for it if we go now," I said. I knew Hand would say yes because for fivemonths we hadn't said no. There had been some difficult requests but we hadn't said no.

"And you owe me," I added.

"What? For -- Oh Jesus. Fine."

"Good.""For how long again?" he asked.

"How long can you get off?" I asked."

Probably a week." I knew he would do it. Hand would have quit his job if theyrefused the time off. He had a decent arrangement now, as a security supervisor on acasino on the river under the Arch, but for a while, in high school, he'd been the NumberTwo-ranked swimmer in all of Wisconsin, and he expected that kind of glory goingforward. He'd never focused again like he'd focused then, and now he was a dabbler, withsome experience as a recording engineer, some in car alarms, some in weather futures(true, long story), some as a carpenter -- we'd actually worked on one summer gigtogether, a porch on an enormous place -- a gingerbread-looking place on Lake Geneva --but he left any job where he wasn't learning or when his dignity was anywherecompromised.”

Uit: On The Road

„Finally a car stopped at the empty filling station; the man and the two women in it wanted to study a map. I stepped right up and gestured in the rain; they consulted; I looked like a maniac, of course, with my hair all wet, my shoes sopping. My shoes, damn fool that I am, were Mexican huaraches, plantlike sieves not fit for the rainy night of America and the raw road night. But the people let me in and rode me north to Newburgh, which I accepted as a better alternative than being trapped in the Bear Mountain wilderness all night. "Besides," said the man, "there's no traffic passes through 6. If you want to go to Chicago you'd do better going across the Holland Tunnel in New York and head for Pittsburgh," and I knew he was right. It was my dream that screwed up, the stupid hearthside idea that it would be wonderful to follow one great red line across America instead of trying various roads and routes.

In Newburgh it had stopped raining. I walked down to the river, and I had to ride back to New York in a bus with a delegation of schoolteachers coming back from a weekend in the mountains-chatter-chatter blah-blah, and me swearing for all the time and the money I'd wasted, and telling myself, I wanted to go west and here I've been all day and into the night going up and down, north and south, like something that can't get started. And I swore I'd be in Chicago tomorrow, and made sure of that, taking a bus to Chicago, spending most of my money, and didn't give a damn, just as long as I'd be in Chicago tomorrow.

It was an ordinary bus trip with crying babies and hot sun, and countryfolk getting on at one Penn town after another, till we got on the plain of Ohio and really rolled, up by Ashtabula and straight across Indiana in the night. I arrived in Chi quite early in the morning, got a room in the Y, and went to bed with a very few dollars in my pocket. I dug Chicago after a good day's sleep.“

Boy and Egg

Every few minutes, he wants

to march the trail of flattened rye grass

back to the house of muttering

hens. He too could make

a bed in hay. Yesterday the egg so fresh

it felt hot in his hand and he pressed it

to his ear while the other children

laughed and ran with a ball, leaving him,

so little yet, too forgetful in games,

ready to cry if the ball brushed him,

riveted to the secret of birds

caught up inside his fist,

not ready to give it over

to the refrigerator

or the rest of the day.

The phone rang in the middle of the Fairbanks night and was always a

wrong number for the Klondike Lounge. Not here, I'd say sleepily. Different

place. We're a bunch of people rolled up in quilts. Then I'd lie awake

wondering, But how is it over there at the Klondike? The stocky building

nestled between parking lots a few blocks from our apartment like some

Yukon explorer's good dream of smoky windows and chow. Surely the

comforting click of pool balls, the scent of old grease, flannel, and steam.

Back home in Texas we got wrong numbers for the local cable TV

company. People were convinced I was a secretary who didn't want to

talk to them. They'd call four times in a row. Sir, I eventually told a

determined gentleman, We've been monitoring your viewing and are sorry to

report you watch entirely too much television. You are currently ineligible for

cable services. Try reading a book or something. He didn't call back. For the

Klondike Lounge I finally mumbled, Come on over, the beer is on us.

Uit: Star Island

„On the fifteenth of March, two hours before sunrise, an emergency medical technician named Jimmy Campo found a sweaty stranger huddled in the back of his ambulance. It was parked in a service alley behind the Stefano Hotel, where Jimmy Campo and his partner had been summoned to treat a twenty-two-year-old white female who had swallowed an unwise mix of vodka, Red Bull, hydrocodone, birdseed and stool softener — in all respects a routine South Beach 911 call, until now.

The stranger in Jimmy Campo’s ambulance had two 35-mm digital cameras hanging from his fleshy neck, and a bulky gear bag balanced on his ample lap. He wore a Dodgers cap and a Bluetooth ear set. His ripe, florid cheeks glistened damply, and his body reeked like a prison laundry bag.

“Get out of my ambulance,” Jimmy Campo said.

“Is she dead?” the man asked excitedly.

“Dude, I’m callin’ the cops if you don’t move it.”

“Who’s with her up there — Colin? Shia?”

The stranger outweighed Jimmy Campo by sixty-five pounds but not an ounce of it was muscle. Jimmy Campo, who’d once been a triathlete, dragged the intruder from the vehicle and deposited him on the sticky pavement beneath a streetlight.

“Chill, for Christ’s sake,” the man said, examining his camera equipment for possible damage. Stray cats tangled and yowled somewhere in the shadows.

Inside the ambulance, Jimmy Campo found what he was looking for: a sealed sterile packet containing a coiled intravenous rig to replace the one that the female overdose victim had ripped from her right arm while she was thrashing on the floor.

The stranger struggled to his feet and said, “I’ll give you a thousand bucks.”

Einfach so.

Damals passierte einiges in meinem Leben.

Uit: The Drowned Boy (Vertaald door Thomas Walsh)

„All of a sudden, Albadora, the septuagenarian Cybele, she who had given life to twenty-two sons and daughters, came toiling up the narrow lane into the court, and indicating the neighboring shore, where it skirted the promontory on the left, announced breathlessly:--

"Down yonder there has been a child drowned!"

Candia made the sign of the cross. Giorgio arose and ascended to the loggia, to observe the spot designated. Upon the sand, below the promontory, in close vicinity to the chain of rocks and the tunnel, he perceived a blotch of white, presumably the sheet which hid the little body. A group of people had gathered around it.

As Ippolita had gone to mass with Elena at the chapel of the Port, he yielded to his curiosity and said to his entertainers:--

"I am going down to see."

"Why?" asked Candia. "Why do you wish to put a pain in your heart?"

Hastening down the narrow lane, he descended by a short cut to the beach, and continued along the water. Reaching the spot, somewhat out of breath, he inquired:--

"What has happened?"

The assembled peasants saluted him and made way for him. One of them answered tranquilly:--

"The son of a mother has been drowned."
Another, clad in linen, who seemed to be standing guard over the corpse, bent down and drew aside the sheet.”

Natuurlijke historie voor de jeugd (Fragment)

Inleiding

Ik heb my dus liever daartoe willen bepalen

The Improved Binoculars

Below me the city was in flames:
the firemen were the first to save
themselves. I saw steeples fall on their knees.

I saw an agent kick the charred bodies
from an orphanage to one side, marking
the site for a future speculation.

Lovers stopped short of the final spasm
and went off angrily in opposite directions,
their elbows held by giant escorts of fire.

Then the dignitaries rode across the bridges
under an auricle of light which delighted them,
nothing for later punishment those that went before.

And the rest of the populace, their mouths
distorted by an unusual gladness, bawled thanks
to this comely and ravaging ally, asking

Only for more light with which to see
their neighbour's destruction.

All this I saw through my improved binoculars.

Mortuary

Flesh has fallen away. Trees
And buildings are summer's skeleton;
Wind has loosened, disarrayed
The separate ribs, the evidence of bone.
Dead, deposited relics
Shored up clean against a stiffened sky,
Fixed by the mortician cold
Moving his fingers over them ceaselessly;
While the snow, decently to inter,
Drifts between the spaces, everywhere.

Der Nützling (fragment)

Unser Büblein fängt zu weinen,

Zittern er nicht halten kann,

doch die Mami, seine Gute,

bringt ihm Tee in großer Kann'.

Du sollst schlafen, lieber Kleiner,

dieser Tee ist für die Ruh'

und halt klüglich Hände oben,

dann bleibt auch dein Löchlein zu.

Sieh', der Samen in dem Nützling,

ist nur da zum Kinder zeugen,

denn du mußt dich diesem Schwanze

nicht in seine Herrschaft beugen.

Du bist Herr in deinem Hause,

denken ist von Wichtigkeit,

und der Nützling in der Hose,

der ist eine Nichtigkeit.

Hin und wieder, wenn die Spannung

wirklich mal wird riesengroß,

dann nimmst Du ihn nebensächlich

wohl schon mal aus deiner Hos'.

Schließlich wird die Samenfülle

mal zu mächtig, die muß weg,

und es ist der dicke Nützling

nur ein Rohr für seinen Zweck".
