Vermoeidheid

Wacht. En zoek 's avonds
De deur en klop aan en omhels
De spannende sleur
Van je liefde. Verzwijg je cliché

Dat ons afscheid ons al tegemoetkust.

Inertie

Ginder. Ik krijg ons niet uit mijn bek.

Gooi mij niet weg.

Bewaar me. Stuur me mijn adres. Gooi me terug.

Lines For Winter

Tell yourself
as it gets cold and gray falls from the air
that you will go on
walking, hearing
the same tune no matter where
you find yourself --
inside the dome of dark
or under the cracking white
of the moon's gaze in a valley of snow.
Tonight as it gets cold
tell yourself
what you know which is nothing
but the tune your bones play
as you keep going. And you will be able
for once to lie down under the small fire
of winter stars.
And if it happens that you cannot
go on or turn back and you find yourself
where you will be at the end,
tell yourself
in that final flowing of cold through your limbs
that you love what you are.

Eating Poetry

Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine.
I have been eating poetry.

The librarian does not believe what she sees.
Her eyes are sad
and she walks with her hands in her dress.

The poems are gone.
The light is dim.
The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up.

Their eyeballs roll,
their blond legs burn like brush.
The poor librarian begins to stamp her feet and weep.

She does not understand.
When I get on my knees and lick her hand,
she screams.

I am a new man.
I snarl at her and bark.
I romp with joy in the bookish dark.

Uit: In jean Genet Square

„When our eyes met, he took the Cuban cigar from his lips, and greeted me in French. That was the first thing which aroused my misgivings, wondering how he knew I spoke French, especially given that we were in Spain. But I found no time to continue with these thoughts before he engaged me with a question:

“It appears you aren’t Spanish… It’s obvious you’re from the southern Mediterranean.”

“It’s true. I’m studying here… but I’m a foreigner!”

“We’re all foreigners in this world!”

“I agree with you completely, we’re all foreigners in this world... and you, neither are you Spanish, I assume?”

“The world is my home… geography doesn’t concern me much…”

While I was talking with him, I tried to remember his face, but without success. I found him once again putting a question to me, this time referring to the book in my hands.

“What are you reading?”

I said, “The Book of Sand” by Borges. I don’t know how many times I’ve read it, and I carry it with me wherever I go. I never get tired of reading it over and over.”

“Sometimes books can become a drug… but even so, I think, Borges is one of the greatest writers of our time.”

There was something in his tone that conveyed a bit of mockery; at least it seemed as such to me, that I began to feel as if I was speaking with a puzzle.”

Grief

In my eyes grief dissolves;
I ran like a deer;
Tree-gnawing wolves
In my heart followed near.

I left my antlers
A long time ago;
Broken from my temples,
They swing on a bough.

Such I was myself:
A deer I used to be.
I shall be a wolf:
That is what troubles me.

A fine wolf I'm becoming.
Struck by magic, while
All my pack-wolves are foaming,
I stop, and try to smile.

I prick up my ears
As a roe gives her call;
Try to sleep; on my shoulders
Dark mulberry leaves fall.

Behold I have found my land...

Behold, I have found my land, the country
Where my name's cut without a fault
By him who is to bury me,
If he was bred to dig my vault.

Earth gapes: I drop into the tin,
Since the iron halfpenny,
Which at a time of war came in,
Has outlived its utility.

Nor is the iron ring legal tender.
New world, land, rights: I read each letter.
Our law is war's, the thriftless spender,
And gold coins keep their value better.

Long I had lived with my own heart;
Then others came with many a fuss.
They said: "You kept yourself apart.
We wish you could have been with us."

So did I live in vanity.
I now draw my conclusion thus.
They did but make a fool of me,
And even my death is fatuous.

I have tried all my life to keep
My footing in a whirlwind fast.
The thought is ludicrously cheap
That others' harm matched mine at last.

The spring is good and summer, too,
But autumn better and winter best
For him who finds his last hopes through
Family hearths he knew as guest.

Uit: Bastard Out of Carolina

“Family is family, but even love can't keep people from eating at each other. Mama's pride, Granny's resentment that there should even be anything to consider shameful, my aunts' fear and bitter humor, my uncles' hard-mouthed contempt for anything that could not be handled with a shotgun or a two-by-four --all combined to grow my mama up fast and painfully. There was only one way to fight off the pity and hatefulness. Mama learned to laugh with them, before they could laugh at her, and to do it so well no one could be sure what she really thought or felt. She got a reputation for an easy smile and a sharp tongue, and using one to balance the other, she seemed friendly but distant. No one knew that she cried in the night for Lyle and her lost happiness, that under that biscuit-crust exterior she was all butter grief and hunger, that more than anything else in the world she wanted someone strong to love her like she loved her girls.“

Fern eurem Traumgelall, fern eurem Trauern

Trägt mich mein Fittich ins Chaos zurück.

Anfang III

Fast.

Venezia

't Is avond. Witte gevels staan

Violette wolken drijven

in de Rio

Grande in de zon.

Ware liefde

Uit: The Old Patagonian Express

„They had affairs to attend to in town – work, shopping, banking, the embarrassing moment at the refund desk. Two had hefty textbooks in their laps, and a spine turned towards me read A General Introduction to Sociology. A man solemnly scanned the headlines in the Globe, another thumb-flicked the papers in his briefcase. A lady told her little girl to stop kicking and sit still. Now they were getting out at the windy platforms – after four stations the car was half-full. They would return that evening, having spent the day speaking of the weather. But they were dressed for it, office clothes under eskimo coats, gloves, mittens, woolly hats; resignation was on their faces and, already, a suggestion of fatigue. Not a trace of excitement; all this was usual and ordinary; the train was their daily chore.

No one looked out of the window. They had seen the harbour, and Bunker Hill, and the billboards before. Nor did they look at each other. Their gazes stopped a few inches from their eyes. Though they paid no attention to them, the signs above their heads spoke to these people. These folks were local, they mattered, the advertising men knew who they were addressing. NEED FEDERAL INCOME TAX FORMS? Beneath it a youth in a pea jacket grinned at his newspaper and swallowed.“

He and She

Of hills and woods this world consists,

Of skies that cover all;

It’s just a broil of voices midst

A little boy and girl.

This world has waters and dry lands,

A question and retort:

To every single short word ‘yes!’

The short one ‘no!’ is heard.

Amidst the grasses, green and wide,

Where harvest-time is blessed,

Oh, how this little boy is right

When saying his word ‘yes’!

Oh, how this little girl is right

When saying her ‘no!’-word,

And every word is right – and th’ night

And th’ dawn over this world.

Thus ‘yes’ and ‘no’ - they always fight

In a children prattle-toil,

Thus they fight in my restless heart,

Thus ever fight in all.

Mazurka Of Chopin

Oh, what a great was our fortune,

we were so lucky at the times,

when was a running disk of Chopin,

the only border between us.

First, the she-disk made quiet hisses,

as a grass-snake, caught on a floor,

but the bewitching Chopin’s features

became else clearly heard in her.

And, a thin graduate, that’s filled in

with water of blue colorant,

a girl-mazurka stood there, real,

nodding with her delightful head.

How was she able with her shoulder

and face as pale as of the Pole,

to understand all pains, I hold in,

and, for her self, receive them all?

She would stretch gently her arms out

to me … and vanish in far land,

leaving all sounds in the round

line, drawn by the needle’s end.

Uit: On poetry

The best general notion which I can give of poetry is, that it is the natural impression of any object or event, by its vividness exciting an involuntary movement of imagination and passion, and producing, by sympathy, a certain modulation of the voice, or sounds, expressing it.

In treating of poetry, I shall speak first of the subject-matter of it, next of the forms of expression to which it gives birth, and afterwards of its connexion with harmony of sound.

Poetry is the language of the imagination and the passions. It relates to whatever gives immediate pleasure or pain to the human mind. It comes home to the bosoms and businesses of men; for nothing but what so comes home to them in the most general and intelligible shape, can be a subject for poetry. Poetry is the universal language which the heart holds with nature and itself. He who has a contempt for poetry, cannot have much respect for himself, or for anything else. It is not a mere frivolous accomplishment (as some persons have been led to imagine), the trifling amusement of a few idle readers or leisure hours -- it has been the study and delight of mankind in all ages. Many people suppose that poetry is something to be found only in books, contained in lines of ten syllables, with like endings: but wherever there is a sense of beauty, or power, or harmony, as in the motion of a wave of the sea, in the growth of a flower that 'spreads its sweet leaves to the air, and dedicates its beauty to the sun', -- there is poetry, in its birth. If history is a grave study, poetry may be said to be a graver: its materials lie deeper, and are spread wider.“

Zo gezegd

Als de dichter aan de toog gezeten
door de grote beer gebeten
aan het betogen gaat:
"Zonder tamtam, zonder blabla
ik heb tram tien gezien, voilà."
Hij heeft zijn krukken weggegooid
en mag nu blijven zitten. Iemand sprak

elkaar bemoedigend toe.
Wat verbeelden die woorden zich wel?
Ze vergrijpen en verzetten zich,
Opgetutte lege dozen, ze zwijgen als vermoord.

Als het gedicht zichzelf dicteert
als de lezer dit gedicht betreedt
als de dichter het gedicht verlaat
en tomeloos ten onder gaat.

Uit: Ben-Hur

„When the dromedary lifted itself out of the last break of the wady, the traveller had passed the boundary of El Belka, the ancient Ammon. It was morning-time. Before him was the sun, half curtained in fleecy mist; before him also spread the desert; not the realm of drifting sands, which was farther on, but the region where the herbage began to dwarf; where the surface is strewn with boulders of granite, and gray and brown stones, interspersed with languishing acacias and tufts of camel-grass. The oak, bramble, and arbutus lay behind, as if they had come to a line, looked over into the well-less waste and crouched with fear.

And now there was an end of path or road. More than ever the camel seemed insensibly driven; it lengthened and quickened its pace, its head pointed straight towards the horizon; through the wide nostrils it drank the wind in great draughts. The litter swayed, and rose and fell like a boat in the waves. Dried leaves in occasional beds rustled underfoot. Sometimes a perfume like absinthe sweetened all the air. Lark and chat and rock-swallow leaped to wing, and white partridges ran whistling and clucking out of the way. More rarely a fox or a hyena quickened his gallop, to study the intruders at a safe distance. Off to the right rose the hills of the Jebel, the pearl-gray veil resting upon them changing momentarily into a purple which the sun would make matchless a little later. Over their highest peaks a vulture sailed on broad wings into widening circles. But of all these things the tenant under the green tent saw nothing, or, at least, made no sign of recognition. His eyes were fixed and dreamy. The going of the man, like that of the animal, was as one being led.“

Uit: Lassie Come-Home

“She was sable, black and snow white. Her amber eyes lit up the face of anyone who looked into them. All the viaage of Greenall Bridge said Lassie was the best collie  they’d ever seen.

One May morning , without telling anyone, Joe’s father sold Lassie for fifteen pounds, ten shillings. He sold her because he’d lost his job for good. This was more than tree weeks’ wages.

How would he tell his son,  Joe? What would Joe do when he found Lassie not waiting for him as she always did afyer school?

When Joe saw the grassy corner of the schoolyard empty that afternoon at four, a panic rose in the back of his mouth. Greenall Bridge was a quiet village, and Joe knew perfectly well Lassie had neither been run over or stolen. Before he even ran to ask his mother what had hapened, a corner of his heart darkened.“

The Old Sergeant (Fragment)

“I have got my marching orders, and I ’m ready now to go;
Doctor, did you say I fainted?—but it could n’t ha’ been so,—
For as sure as I ’m a sergeant, and was wounded at Shiloh,
I ’ve this very night been back there, on the old field of Shiloh!

“This is all that I remember: the last time the Lighter came,
And the lights had all been lowered, and the noises much the same,
He had not been gone five minutes before something called my name:
‘ORDERLY SERGEANT—ROBERT BURTON!’—just that way it called my name.

“And I wondered who could call me so distinctly and so slow,
Knew it could n’t be the Lighter,—he could not have spoken so,—
And I tried to answer, ‘Here, sir!’ but I could n’t make it go;
For I could n’t move a muscle, and I could n’t make it go!
