Absolute Death

To die.
To die body and soul.
Completely.

To die without leaving the sad remains of flesh,
Without leaving the bloodless mask of wax,
Surrounded by flowers,
Which will rot away — so happy! — one day,
Bathed in tears
Born less from grief than from the shock of death.

To die without leaving perhaps even a pilgrim soul…
On the way to heaven?
But what heaven can fulfill your dream of heaven?

To die without leaving a furrow, a trace, a shadow,
Without leaving even the remembrance of a shadow
In any human heart, in any human thought,
In any human skin.

To die so completely
That one day when somebody sees your name on a page
He will ask: “Who was he?...”

To die still more completely:
Without leaving even this name.

Apple

From one angle I see you just like a dried-up breast
From another just like a belly from whose navel still hangs the
         umbilical cord

You are red as the divine love

Inside you in the little seeds
Palpitates a prodigious life
Infinitely

And you remain so simple
Beside a knife
In a poor hotel room.

Uit: Two captains (Vertaald door Bernard Isaacs)

“He said the devils werefond of smoking and drinking, they had bullet-heads, and many of them were lame, having hurt themselves when they dropped from the sky. In Pokrovsky Tower they raised families and in fine weather went down tothe river to steal the tobacco which the fishermen tied to their nets toappease the water-sprites.So I was not really surprised when, as I was blowing up my little fire, Isaw a thin black shape in the gap of the old ramparts."What are you doing here, shaver?" the devil said, just like any ordinary human being.I couldn't have answered him even if I had wanted to. All I could do was just stare and shake. At that moment the moon sailed out from behind the clouds, and Icould make out the figure of the watchman across the river, walkinground the leather depot—a burly man with a rifle sticking up behind his back."Catching crabs?"He sprang down lightly and squatted by the fire."What's the matter with you, swallowed your tongue, silly?"No, it wasn't a devil. It was a skinny hatless man with a walking stick  which he kept slapping against his leg. I couldn't make out his face, but Inoticed he had nothing on under his jacket and was wearing a scarf inplace of a shirt.

"Don't want to speak, you rascal, eh?" He prodded me with his stick."Come on, answer me! Answer! Or I'll-" Without getting up, he grabbed my leg and pulled me towards him. Igave a sort of croaky sound."Ah, you're a deaf mute, I see!"He let go of me and sat there for quite a while, poking among theembers with his stick."Fine town, this," he said disgustedly. "A dog in every blessed yard; brutes of policemen. Damned crab-eaters!."

Les Rossignols

La nuit a ralenti les heures;

Le sommeil s'étend sur Paris.

Charmez l'écho de nos demeures;

Éveillez-vous, oiseaux chéris.

Dans ces instants où le coeur pense,

Heureux qui peut rentrer en soi!

De la nuit j'aime le silence:

Doux rossignols, chantez pour moi.

Doux chantres de l'amour fidèle,

De Phryné fuyez le séjour:

Phryné rend chaque nuit nouvelle

Complice d'un nouvel amour.

En vain des baisers sans ivresse

Ont scellé des serments sans foi;

Je crois encore à la tendresse:

Pour vous il n'est point de zoïle;

Mais croyez-vous, par vos accords,

Toucher l'avare au coeur stérile,

Qui compte à présent ses trésors?

Quand la nuit, favorable aux ruses,

Pour son or le remplit d'effroi,

Ma pauvreté sourit aux muses:

Vous qui redoutez l'esclavage,

Ah! Refusez vos tendres airs

T-splitsing

van twee kanten kwam ik aangelopen;

Schaatsenrijden

Glad en wijd ligt het ijs
in een veeg wit en grijs
en de lucht, tastbre kou,
is gestolpt onder blauw.
En mijn schaats met een kras
als een schot onder glas
trekt een veervormig spoor
van mijn voet uit te loor.
Ik scheer scheef op het vlak
langs een donkerblauw wak.
Na een sprong voor een scheur
als een koord, schiet ik voort
op het staal en ik duik
in de wind en gebruik
elke spier, die geniet
als ik suis langs het riet.

Uit: Goes to Haiti

„You've got to get love. You've lost your sense of propriety. Your social so-called graces. You're running around a cunt without a head. You could fuck anybody anytime any place you don't give a damn who the person is except you really don't want to get murdered any number of people except when the sex situations happen you have this idea lingering from the past maybe you shouldn't fuck so much and so openly other people are looking down on you other people are thinking you're shit. People misunderstand why you act the ways you do so they might harm you. You've already gotten beaten up once even though you kind of liked it. You've got to use your intellect to keep you in line, no insane sexual behavior no pleading and groveling for love, you don't know the difference between friends and strangers, cause if you don't use your arbitrary, it feels arbitrary, intellect to keep you in line, you're going to go too far out, you're beyond the limits of decent human behavior, pleasing and groveling on the ground, every time you get a scrap of love wanting twice as much more more, you've got to have more cause you know no one could love you cause no one's ever loved you... You've got to get enough love all the love in the world to make it secure. You step on the people you meet. You use them for your insane desires.“

Uit: Out of My Bone: The Letters of Joy Davidman

„All you have ever heard about Hollywood is true; not only are the people mad, dishonest, conscienceless, and money-grubbing, but they are all these things at the top of their voices. There is a continuous rapid-fire rattle of talk at a Hollywood party, louder than any machine-gun. Perfect strangers rush over, wave their drinks in your face, tell you discreditable stories about their best friends (who are always famous stars), remark that Joan Crawford Is Slipping, and announce how much they paid for their clothes, manicure, and cigarette holders. (8) Intelligence is measured by the raucousness of the laugh and the speed of the wise-crack. Genius is measured by the expensiveness of the automobile and the number of screen credits. (Screen credits are an invention for giving each of one hundred writers a share of the responsibility in a bad picture.)“

Uit: Captain Macklin: His Memoirs

„It may seem presumptuous that so young a man as myself should propose to write his life and memoirs, for, as a rule, one waits until he has accomplished something in the world, or until he has reached old age, before he ventures to tell of the times in which he has lived, and of his part in them. But the profession to which I belong, which is that of a soldier, and which is the noblest profession a man can follow, is a hazardous one, and were I to delay until to-morrow to write down what I have seen and done, these memoirs might never be written, for, such being the fortune of war, to-morrow might not come.

So I propose to tell now of the little I have accomplished in the first twenty-three years of my life, and, from month to month, to add to these memoirs in order that, should I be suddenly taken off, my debit and credit pages may be found carefully written up to date and carried forward. On the other hand, should I live to be an old man, this record of my career will furnish me with material for a more complete autobiography, and will serve as a safeguard against a failing memory.

In writing a personal narrative I take it that the most important events to be chronicled in the life of a man are his choice of a wife and his choice of a profession. As I am unmarried, the chief event in my life is my choice of a profession, and as to that, as a matter of fact, I was given no choice, but from my earliest childhood was destined to be a soldier.“

A Mountain Spring

Peace hath an altar there. The sounding feet
Of thunder and the wildering wings of rain
Against fire-rifted summits flash and beat,
And through grey upper gorges swoop and strain;
But round that hallowed mountain-spring remain,
Year after year, the days of tender heat,
And gracious nights whose lips with flowers are sweet,
And filtered lights, and lutes of soft refrain.
A still, bright pool. To men I may not tell
The secrets that its heart of water knows,
The story of a loved and lost repose;
Yet this I say to cliff and close-leaved dell:
A fitful spirit haunts yon limpid well,
Whose likeness is the faithless face of Rose.

Sonnets on the Discovery of Botany Bay by Captain Cook

The First Attempt to Reach the Shore

Where is the painter who shall paint for you,
My Austral brothers, with a pencil steeped
In hues of Truth, the weather-smitten crew
Who gazed on unknown shores—a thoughtful few—
What time the heart of their great Leader leaped
Till he was faint with pain of longing? New
And wondrous sights on each and every hand,
Like strange supernal visions, grew and grew
Until the rocks and trees, and sea and sand,
Danced madly in the tear-bewildered view!
And from the surf a fierce, fantastic band
Of startled wild men to the hills withdrew
With yells of fear! Who’ll paint thy face, O Cook!
Turned seaward, “after many a wistful look!”

How near am I to happiness

How near am I to happiness
That earth exceeds not! not another like it:
The treasures of the deep are not so precious,
As are the concealed comforts of a man
Lock's up in woman's love. I scent the air
Of blessings when I come but near the house:
What a delicious breath marriage sends forth!
The violet bed's not sweeter. Honest wedlock
Is like a banqueting house built in a garden,
On which the spring's chaste flowers take delight
To cast their modest odours. ----
-- Now for a welcome,
Able to draw men's envies upon man;
A kiss, now, that will hang upon my lip,
As sweet as morning dew upon a rose,
And full as long.
