Karneval (Wilhelm Busch)

Bij Carnaval

Karneval

Durchs umgekehrte Perspektiv.

Uit: Buzz Aldrin, What Happened to You in All the Confusion? (Vertaald door
Deborah Dawkin)

„The person you love is 72,8 percent water and there’s been no rain for weeks. I’m standing out here, in the middle of the garden, my feetfirmly planted on the ground. I bend over the tulips, gloves on my hands, boots on my feet, small pruning shears between my fingers,it’sextremely early, one April morning in and it’s beginning to grow warmer,I’ve noticed it recently,a certain something has begun to stir,I noticed it as I got out of the car this morning,in the gray light,as Iopened the gates into the nursery, the air had grown softer, morerounded at the edges,I’d even considered changing out of my winterboots and putting my sneakers on.I stand here in the nursery garden,by the flowers so laboriously planted and grown side by side in theirbeds, in their boxes, the entire earth seeming to lift, billowing green, and I tilt my head upward, there’s been sunshine in the last few days,a high sun pouring down, but clouds have moved in from the NorthSea somewhere now, Sellafield radiation clouds, and in short inter- vals the sun vanishes, for seconds at first, until eventually more andmore time passes before the sunlight is allowed through the cumulusclouds again.I lean my head back, face turned up,eyes squinting, withthe sun being so strong as it forces its way through the layers of cloud.I wait.Stand and wait. And then I see it,somewhere up there,a thou-sand, perhaps three thousand feet above, the first drop takes shapeand falls, releases hold, hurtles toward me, and I stand there, faceturned up,it’s about to start raining,in a few seconds it will pour, and never stop, at least that’s how it will seem, as though a balloon hadfinally burst, and I stare up,a single drop on its way down toward me,heading straight, its pace increases and the water is forced to changeshape with the speed, the first drop falls and there I stand motion-less, until I feel it hit me in the center of my forehead, exploding
outward and splitting into fragments that land on my jacket, on theflowers beneath me, my boots, my gardening gloves. I bow my head. And it begins to rain.”

Uit: The Bookseller of Kabul (Vertaald door Ingrid Christophersen)

"A friend of mine would like to marry Sonya," he told the parents.
It was not the first time someone had asked for their daughter's hand. She was beautiful and diligent, but they thought she was still a bit young. Sonya's father was no longer able to work. During a brawl a knife had severed some of the nerves in his back. His beautiful daughter could be used as a bargaining chip in the marriage stakes, and he and his wife were always expecting the next bid to be even higher.
"He is rich," said Sultan. "He's in the same business as I am. He is well educated and has three sons. But his wife is starting to grow old."
"What's the state of his teeth?" the parents asked immediately, alluding to the friend's age.
"About like mine," said Sultan. "You be the judge."
Old, the parents thought. But that was not necessarily a disadvantage. The older the man, the higher the price for their daughter. A bride's price is calculated according to age, beauty, and skill and according to the status of the family.
When Sultan Khan had delivered his message, the parents said, as could be expected, "She is too young."
Anything else would be to sell short to this rich, unknown suitor whom Sultan recommended so warmly. It would not do to appear too eager. But they knew Sultan would return; Sonya was young and beautiful.
He returned the next day and repeated the proposal. The same conversation, the same answers. But this time he got to meet Sonya, whom he had not seen since she was a young girl.”

„Also denn“, sagte sie.

A Dream

I dreamt of autumn in the window's twilight,
And you, a tipsy jesters' throng amidst. '
And like a falcon, having stooped to slaughter,
My heart returned to settle on your wrist.

But time went on, grew old and deaf. Like thawing
Soft ice old silk decayed on easy chairs.
A bloated sunset from the garden painted
The glass with bloody red September tears.

But time grew old and deaf. And you, the loud one,
Quite suddenly were still. This broke a spell.
The dreaming ceased at once, as though in answer
To an abruptly silenced bell.

And I awakened. Dismal as the autumn
The dawn was dark. A stronger wind arose
To chase the racing birchtrees on the skyline,
As from a running cart the streams of straws.

March

The sun is hotter than the top ledge in a steam bath;
The ravine, crazed, is rampaging below.
Spring -- that corn-fed, husky milkmaid --
Is busy at her chores with never a letup.

The snow is wasting (pernicious anemia --
See those branching veinlets of impotent blue?)
Yet in the cowbarn life is burbling, steaming,
And the tines of pitchforks simply glow with health.

These days -- these days, and these nights also!
With eavesdrop thrumming its tattoos at noon,
With icicles (cachectic!) hanging on to gables,
And with the chattering of rills that never sleep!

All doors are flung open -- in stable and in cowbarn;
Pigeons peck at oats fallen in the snow;
And the culprit of all this and its life-begetter--
The pile of manure -- is pungent with ozone.

Uit: Ergo (Vertaald door
Ralph Manheim)

“Slowly and heavily, a hippopotamus rising from the Nile, he rose from the paper mountain, beat the nightmare of virginal lewdness out of his clothes and stood there, a squat man of sixty with short gray hair and swollen lips, crossing his hands over his forehead, and looked around him darkly. Have you been watching me again while I was asleep? Have you been spying on me, you scum? You’re living by my sufferance, remember that. Tomorrow it will be all up with you. I’ll throw you both out. Both of you.

What time is it?

Nine o’clock, Father. Aslan called him Father because of the difference in their ages and in token of devotion and gratitude. Nine o’clock, eh? Wacholder was now able to shout, so he shouted.

Yes, nine o’clock, Father.

What about my tea?

Leo jumped out of bed again (has he gone plumb crazy?) and picked at his molar with satisfaction as Aslan obediently brought down his own tea. Aslan can do what he likes, I’m here to work.

Wacholder warmed his hands on the lukewarm tea. They’ve been here again, Aslan, the big black ones, do you hear. They’ve visited me again, Aslan, as big as gothic letters, up and down the wall of my heart, Aslan, up and down, and the Latin letters too, as green and thick as creepers. A whole bellyful, Aslan, it turned my stomach, Aslan.

And then the rats, as big as big steamships, back and forth, back and forth. What do you think, Aslan, should I call the doctor?

Call the doctor, Father.

No, I won’t call the doctor. I’ve changed my mind. Let them crawl, let them bob up and down, let them gnaw and creep and root about. Let them hollow me out. Man is a pipe.

Yes, Father.”

Silence

I know a city

that fills itself with sun each day

and in that moment everything is seized

I left one evening

In my heart remained the unnerving buzz

of the cicadas

From the ship

painted in white

I saw

my city vanish

leaving

little

an embrace of lights in the dolorous air

suspended

Monotony

Stopped before two stones

I languish

under this

fogged arc

of sky

The tangle of paths

possesses my blindness

Nothing is bleaker

than this monotony

Once

I did not know

that even

the evening consumption

of the sky

is a common

thing

And on my African soil

calmed

to an arpeggio

lost in the air

I was renewing myself

Allerzielen

voor tante France

Een herfstblad dwarrelt van de boom
gekleurd in vroege ochtendzon

in kristallen vaas
ooit naast je bed gezet

For a five year old

A snail is climbing up the window-sill
Into your room, after a night of rain.
You call me in to see and I explain
That it would be unkind to leave it there:
It might crawl to the floor; we must take care
That no one squashes it. You understand,
And carry it outside, with careful hand,
To eat a daffodil.

I see, then, that a kind of faith prevails:
Your gentleness is moulded still by words
From me, who have trapped mice and shot wild birds,
Your closest relatives and who purveyed
The harshest kind of truth to many another,
But that is how things are: I am your mother,
And we are kind to snails.

Tokens

The sheets have been laundered clean
of our joint essence - a compound,
not a mixture; but here are still

your forgotten pipe and tobacco,
your books open on my table,
your voice speaking in my poems.

As when a child...

As when a child on some long winter's night
Affrighted clinging to its Grandam's knees
With eager wond'ring and perturbed delight
Listens strange tales of fearful dark decrees
Muttered to wretch by necromantic spell;
Or of those hags, who at the witching time
Of murky midnight ride the air sublime,
And mingle foul embrace with fiends of Hell:
Cold Horror drinks its blood! Anon the tear
More gentle starts, to hear the Beldame tell
Of pretty babes, that loved each other dear,
Murdered by cruel Uncle's mandate fell:
Ev'n such the shiv'ring joys thy tones impart,
Ev'n so thou, Siddons! meltest my sad heart!

Landschaft

Aber es werden Menschen kommen

denen das zeitauf zeitab

der Fabriken gleichgültig ist

sie wollen nicht auf den Supermärkten

einkaufen aber sie fragen nach dem

Millionen Jahre alten Wind

ob ihr noch Vögel

Fische

Füchse

Sumpfdotterblumen

aufgehoben habt

wenn anderswo

alle Wälder zerstückelt sind

alle Städte über die Ränder getreten

alle Täler überquellen vom Müll

Könnt ihr noch Wetterbuchen liefern?

einen unbegradigten Fluß?

Mulden ohne schwelenden Abfall?

Hänge ohne Betongeschwüre?

Seitentäler ohne Gewinn?

habt ihr noch immer nicht genug

Einkaufszentren in die Wiesen gestreut

Möbelhäuser zwischen Skabiosen

nicht genug Skilifte ohne Schnee

Nachschubstraße für Brot und Spiele

Panzerschneisen hügelentlang

wenn ihr die Schafe aussterben laßt

stirbt der Wacholder

Silberdisteln

Bald wird man diese Namen aussprechen

wie Joringel Jorinde als Kind

zu den Ammoniten im Steinbruch

wird man wie nach Eleusis gehen

eure Geschichtslosigkeit

war ein Windschatten

abseits der Erosion des Jahrtausends

könnt ihr denen die zu euch kommen

eine Wacholderstunde anbieten

erdalterlang

falls ihr den Augenblick

euren

nicht zementiert?

It Leaves them

The tide ebbs
to where it came from,
it leaves them
--mud banks
with crab holes--
it shows their sores,
shows their shame.

Yes, my child,
see how it goes
with you:

what will cover
your naked skin,
who will scrub you
clean again,
who will teach you
to forget
your life under water,
who will let
you believe?

Der todkranke Habicht
und die leichtgläubigen Tauben

Ein Habicht lag in den letzten Zügen,
Und rief, es geht mir herzlich nah,
Dass ich, die Tauben zu betrügen,
Im Leben stets nach Mitteln sah;
Drum such ich ihnen abzubitten,
Was sie bisher von mir erlitten.

Die Tauben wurden hergebeten;
Es kamen ihrer auch ein Paar.
Doch als sie, sicher vor Gefahr,
Dem Kranken allzu nah getreten,
Ihn, zur Versöhnung, selbst zu küssen,
Da hat er sie noch tot gebissen.

Lernt klüger sein, ihr albern Tauben,
Und seid ihn Zukunft nicht so blind,
Merkt, dass den Feinden nicht zu glauben,
So lange sie am Leben sind.

“Well, He say, real slow, I can't let you have Nettie. She too young. Don't know nothing but what you tell her. Sides, I want her to git some more schooling. Make a schoolteacher out of her. But I can let you have Celie. She the oldest anyway. She ought to marry first. She ain't fresh tho, but I spect you know that. She spoiled. Twice. But you don't need a fresh woman no how. I got a fresh one in there myself and she sick all the time. He spit, over the railing. The children git on her nerve, she not much of a cook. And she big already.
Mr. ______ he don't say nothing. I stop crying I'm so surprise.
She ugly. He say. But she ain't no stranger to hard work. And she clean. And God done fixed her. You can do everything just like you want to and she ain't gonna make you feed it or clothe it.

Mr. ______ still don't say nothing. I take out the picture of Shug Avery. I look into her eyes. Her eyes say Yeah, it bees that way sometime.
Fact is, he say, I got to git rid of her. She too old to be living here at home. And she a bad influence on my other girls. She'd come with her own linen. She can take that cow she raise down there back of the crib. But Nettie you flat out can't have. Not now. Not never.
Mr. ______ finally speak. Clearing his throat. I ain't never really look at that one, he say.
Well, next time you come you can look at her. She ugly. Don't even look like she kin to Nettie. But she'll make the better wife. She ain't smart either, and I'll just be fair, you have to watch her or she'll give away everything you own. But she can work like a man.
Mr. ______ say How old she is?
He say, She near twenty. And another thing-She tell lies.”

Je me relâchai complètement.
Je me cambrai brusquement.

Dreams

I do not care to talk to you although
Your speech evokes a thousand sympathies,
And all my being's silent harmonies
Wake trembling into music. When you go
It is as if some sudden, dreadful blow
Had severed all the strings with savage ease.
No, do not talk; but let us rather seize
This intimate gift of silence which we know.
Others may guess your thoughts from what you say,
As storms are guessed from clouds where darkness broods.
To me the very essence of the day
Reveals its inner purpose and its moods;
As poplars feel the rain and then straightway
Reverse their leaves and shimmer through the woods.

Before Dawn

Life! Austere arbiter of each man's fate,
By whom he learns that Nature's steadfast laws
Are as decrees immutable; O pause
Your even forward march! Not yet too late
Teach me the needed lesson, when to wait
Inactive as a ship when no wind draws
To stretch the loosened cordage. One implores
Thy clemency, whose wilfulness innate
Has gone uncurbed and roughshod while the years
Have lengthened into decades; now distressed
He knows no rule by which to move or stay,
And teased with restlessness and desperate fears
He dares not watch in silence thy wise way
Bringing about results none could have guessed.

Uit: Kokoro (Vertaald door Edwin McClellan)

“My inn was in a rather out-of-the-way district of Kamakura, and if one wished to indulge in such fashionable pastimes as playing billiards and eating ice cream, one had to walk a long way across rice fields. If one went by rickshaw, it cost twenty sen. Remote as the district was, however, many rich families had built their villas there. It was quite near the sea also, which was convenient for swimmers such as myself.

I walked to the sea every day, between thatched cottages that were old and smoke-blackened. The beach was always crowded with men and women, and at times the sea, like a public bath, would be covered with a mass of black heads. I never ceased to wonder how so many city holiday-makers could squeeze themselves into so small a town. Alone in this noisy and happy crowd, I managed to enjoy myself, dozing on the beach or splashing about in the water.

It was in the midst of this confusion that I found Sensei. In those days, there were two tea houses on the beach. For no particular reason, I had come to patronize one of them. Unlike those people with their great villas in the Hase area who had their own bathing huts, we in our part of the beach were obliged to make use of these tea houses which served also as communal changing rooms. In them the bathers would drink tea, rest, have their bathing suits rinsed, wash the salt from their bodies, and leave their hats and sunshades for safe-keeping. I owned no bathing suit to change into, but I was afraid of being robbed, and so I regularly left my things in the tea house before going into the water.”

Hallo, hiero!

Hallo, hiero, jij bènt 'r eentje!
Jij kom toch ook uit Rotterdam?
Weet jij nog van de luizekam?
En zeg jij worteltje of peentje?

Ik ging als jochie fikkie stoken!
Ik kocht een krosie voor een cent!
Die Bep van Klaveren, zo'n vent!
En jôh, me moe maar kroten koken!

Hé, weet je nog die Hoogstraat dan?
Precies 1 kilometer lang!
Schiedamsedijk! Die meiden!

En hop, de hol op met zo'n kar!
En toen, die bommen op je knar!
Dat waren nog eens tijden...

Lofdicht op de kast

O, als de kast toch niet bestond,
waar moesten wij dan alles laten?
De Bijbel en de Beatlesplaten,
Claus, Heine... alles op de grond.

De mooie schelpen die je vond,
de badhanddoeken, hebbedingen,
de honderden herinneringen...
ze zwierven maar zo'n beetje rond.

Maar zie: de uitgevonden kast
houdt alle zaken waardevast,
rein, veilig en bereikbaar.

Het album, bloesjes, leukoplast,
de kast bewaart, o ja, de kast
is echt onvergelijkbaar.

“It is three o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. He has been in the Reading Room since opening time, reading Ford's Mr Humpty Dumpty, a novel so tedious that he has to fight to stay awake. In a short while the Reading Room will close for the day, the whole great Museum will close. On Sundays the Reading Room does not open; between now and next Saturday, reading will be a matter of an hour snatched here and there of an evening. Should he soldier on until closing time, though he is racked with yawns? What is the point of this enterprise anyway?

What is the good to a computer programmer, if computer programming is to be his life, to have an MA in English literature? And where are the unrecognised masterpieces that he was going to uncover? Mr Humpty Dumpty is certainly not one of them. He shuts the book, packs up.

Outside the daylight is already waning. Along Great Russell Street he trudges to Tottenham Court Road, then south toward Charing Cross. Of the throng on the sidewalks, most are young people. Strictly speaking he is their contemporary, but he does not feel like that. He feels middle-aged, prematurely middle-aged: one of those bloodless, high-domed, exhausted scholars whose skin flakes at the merest touch. Deeper than that he is still a child ignorant of his place in the world, frightened, indecisive. What is he doing in this huge, cold city where merely to stay alive means holding tight all the time, trying not to fall?

The bookshops on Charing Cross Road stay open until six. Until six he has somewhere to go. After that he will be adrift amid the Saturday-night fun-seekers. For a while he can follow the flow, pretending he too is seeking fun, pretending he has somewhere to go, someone to meet; but in the end he will have to give up and catch the train back to Archway station and the solitude of his room.”

Easter Week

Who fears to speak of Easter Week

That week of famed renown,
When the boys in green went out to fight

 The forces of the Crown.

With Mausers bold and hearts of gold

And the Countess dressed in green

And high above the G.F.O.
The rebel flag was seen.

Then came ten thousand khaki coats

Our rebel boys to kill,
Before they reached O'Connell Street,

Of fight they got their fill.

They'd Maxim guns and cavalry

And cannon in galore;
But it's not our fault that e'er a one

Got back to England's shore.

They shot our leaders in a gaol
Without a trial, they say;
They murdered women and children too

Who in their cellars lay.

They dug their grave with gun and spade

To hide them from our view
Because they could neither kill nor catch

The Rebels so bold and true.

May the Lord have mercy on three men

Who faced the murderous foe,
There was Dixon, Sheehy-Skeffington

And McIntyre also.

'Twas in a dismal barrack cell
They met their fate so cruel,
Yes, they were shot with no clergy got

To prepare them for their doom.

Thalassa

De nacht was in de eikebossen
Tussen de heuv'len klaar en koel;
En statig stapten onze rossen
Naar 't oosten en 't verlangde doel.

Toen woei een windje in onze oren
Een vreemd gemurmel, ver en veeg . . .
En briesend sprong mijn ros naar voren,
In onbevolen draf en steeg,

En stond ter kruine. Onbewogen,
Onder de koperrode maan,
Aanschouwden onze ontroerde ogen,

Merci!

Zoo was de ontvangst.”

II

Keinem ist hauch gegeben.

Glosender totenmond bittert bittert die trunkene stunde,

wo der zurückkunft spitziger schrei sich entwirrt,

Und aus dem bogenbau, dem blätternden bogenbau

Die schwarze kontur sich ins offne verirrt.

Wir sind verstossene. An jede hoffnung verfallen,

O glosender totenmond, bittere trunkene stunde.

III.

Uit: The prisoner of Zenda

“Well then—and I must premise that I am going, perforce, to rake up the very scandal which my dear Lady Burlesdon wishes forgotten—in the year 1733, George II. sitting then on the throne, peace reigning for the moment, and the King and the Prince of Wales being not yet at loggerheads, there came on a visit to the English Court a certain prince, who was afterwards known to history as Rudolf the Third of Ruritania. The prince was a tall, handsome young fellow, marked (maybe marred, it is not for me to say) by a somewhat unusually long, sharp and straight nose, and a mass of dark-red hair—in fact, the nose and the hair which have stamped the Elphbergs time out of mind. He stayed some months in England, where he was most courteously received; yet, in the end, he left rather under a cloud. For he fought a duel (it was considered highly well bred of him to waive all question of his rank) with a nobleman, well known in the society of the day, not only for his own merits, but as the husband of a very beautiful wife. In that duel Prince Rudolf received a severe wound, and, recovering therefrom, was adroitly smuggled off by the Ruritanian ambassador, who had found him a pretty handful.

The nobleman was not wounded in the duel; but the morning being raw and damp on the occasion of the meeting, he contracted a severe chill, and, failing to throw it off, he died some six months after the departure of Prince Rudolf, without having found leisure to adjust his relations with his wife—who, after another two months, bore an heir to the title and estates of the family of Burlesdon. This lady was the Countess Amelia, whose picture my sister-in-law wished to remove from the drawing-room in Park Lane; and her husband was James, fifth Earl of Burlesdon and twenty-second Baron Rassendyll, both in the peerage of England, and a Knight of the Garter. As for Rudolf, he went back to Ruritania, married a wife, and ascended the throne, whereon his progeny in the direct line have sat from then till this very hour—with one short interval. And, finally, if you walk through the picture galleries at Burlesdon, among the fifty portraits or so of the last century and a half, you will find five or six, including that of the sixth earl, distinguished by long, sharp, straight noses and a quantity of dark-red hair; these five or six have also blue eyes, whereas among the Rassendylls dark eyes are the commoner.”

To A Familiar Genius Flying By

Reveal yourself, anonymous enchanter!
What heaven hastens you to me?
Why draw me to that promised land again
That I gave up so long ago?

Was it not you who in my youth
Enchanted me with such sweet dreams,
Did you not whisper, long ago,
Dear hopes of a guests ethereal?

Was it not you through whom all lived
In golden days, in happy lands
Of fragrant meadows, waters bright,
Where days were merry ?neath clear skies?

Was it not you who breathed into my vernal breast
Some melancholy mysteries
Tormenting it with keen desire
Exciting it to anxious joy?

Was it not you who bore my soul aloft
Upon the inspiration of your sacred verse,
Who flamed before me like a holy vision,
Initiating me into life's beauty?

In hours lost, hours of secret grief,
Did you not always murmur to my heart,
With happy comfort soothe it
And nurture it with quiet hope?

Did not my soul forever heed you
In all the purest moments of my life
When'ere it glimpsed fate's sacred essence
With only God to witness it?

What news bring you, O, my enchantress?
Or will you once more call in dreams
Awaken futile thoughts of old,
Whisper of joy and then fall silent?

O spirit, bide with me awhile;
O, faithful friend, haste not away;
Stay, please become my earthly life,
O, Guardian angel of my soul.

Sympathie

Seelig, wenn aus des Geliebten Blicken
Die verwandte Seele wiederstrahlt!
Wenn sich unser Kummer und Entzücken
Spiegelnd in des Freundes Auge malt;

Jeder sucht den Urquell eigner Lust;
