Geduld

Hou me vast, geduld, ook nu we samengaan

Jij bent schatrijk geboren

Jij en ik, dat is twee
Plus dit. Dat is drie. Dat is vragen
Om ruzie, men komt er niet uit.
Wij zitten perplex in elkaar.
Wij maken hetzelfde misbaar.
Jij en ik dat is een.

Jij bent schatrijk geboren
En kocht mij met gemak.
Dat zet ik je betaald
Op deze rekening.
Ik ben geen slapend geld
Vandaag, ik handel in ons.

Ik werk mij in het zweet
Van jou, ik bid en vloek mij
Uit de naad van ons,
Ik maak je winst op de markt.
Jij bent wat ik hier tel,
Mijn tol, mijn kapitaal.

Ik viel jou in de schoot
Van goud, ik woeker met wissels
Van ons en koop je terug
Nu ik ons doorverkoop
Aan vreemden, de truc is gelukt.
Wij staan op hetzelfde biljet.

Ritueel

Zij hebben ons hart ingepikt,
Onze groei, onze poppen genekt,
Onze tuin op de trein gezet,
Ons verblind met hun lichtende as.

Zij hebben de zwarte zak
Van hun afwezigheid strak
Over ons heengetrokken
En toen onze oren verpest
Met de ruis van hun hemelse spraak.

Dus waar ik vandaan kom, daar
Moet je die opgebaarde
Nog lichtjes blozende doden
Lang en bedachtzaam slaan.

Man and Camel

On the eve of my fortieth birthday

I sat on the porch having a smoke

when out of the blue a man and a camel

happened by. Neither uttered a sound

at first, but as they drifted up the street

and out of town the two of them began to sing.

Yet what they sang is still a mystery to me—

the words were indistinct and the tune

too ornamental to recall. Into the desert

they went and as they went their voices

rose as one above the sifting sound

of windblown sand. The wonder of their singing,

its elusive blend of man and camel, seemed

an ideal image for all uncommon couples.

Was this the night that I had waited for

so long? I wanted to believe it was,

but just as they were vanishing, the man

and camel ceased to sing, and galloped

back to town. They stood before my porch,

staring up at me with beady eyes, and said:

"You ruined it. You ruined it forever."

The Everyday Enchantment of Music

A rough sound was polished until it became a smoother sound, which was polished until it became music. Then the music was polished until it became the memory of a night in Venice when tears of the sea fell from the Bridge of Sighs, which in turn was polished until it ceased to be and in its place stood the empty home of a heart in trouble. Then suddenly there was sun and the music came back and traffic was moving and off in the distance, at the edge of the city, a long line of clouds appeared, and there was thunder, which, however menacing, would become music, and the memory of what happened after Venice would begin, and what happened after the home of the troubled heart broke in two would also begin.

Uit: In Jean Genet Square

“The failure of sand… nothing grows, everything gets erased.”

He said that while leaning with his hand on the back of the park bench, and I noticed that he did not seem as imposing as I had first supposed. It was clear his life had not been a walk in the park. He then took the straw hat he had been fingering and put it on his head, saying, “Do you know who said that quote?”

“Honestly… my memory fails me.”

“James Joyce, in Ulysses.”

But before I could find a moment to ask him his name, or if we had met previously, he disappeared, leaving me to flounder in my confusion.

With him, my desire to read also disappeared that day, as his solemn voice continued to ring in my ears. I remained there, motionless, until nightfall.

In the days that followed I continued going to the same place, sitting in the same bench, patently hoping to meet that man who appeared to me a connoisseur of the world of literature. But he never came. In fact, nothing at all transpired that could confirm to me the reality of our meeting, that it was not simply all a confused dream.

Summer had begun to expire when one day I entered a large bookshop specialized in foreign literature located in the center of Barcelona. I was looking for a copy of Ulysses by James Joyce. While I was rummaging through the shelves, my attention was taken by a group of black-and-white photographs hanging above the bookcase. They were pictures of famous authors, and there between Sartre and Camus – I trembled when I saw it – hung a photo of one with a completely shaven head smoking a Cuban cigar.”

By the Danube

1.

As I sat on the bottom step of the wharf,
A melon-rind flowed by with the current;
Wrapped in my fate I hardly heard the chatter
Of the surface, while the deep was silent.
As if my own heart had opened its gate:
The Danube was turbulent, wise and great.

Like a man's muscles when hard at his toil,
Hammering, digging, leaning on the spade,
So bulged and relaxed and contracted again
Each single movement, each and every wave.
It rocked me like my mother for a time
And washed and washed the city's filth and grime.

And the rain began to fall but then it stopped
Just as if it couldn't have mattered less,
And like one watching the long rain from a cave,
I gazed away into the nothingness.
Like grey, endless rain from the skies overcast,
So fell drably all that was bright: the past.

But the Danube flowed on. And the sprightly waves
In playful gaiety laughed at me again,
Like a child on his prolific mother's knee,
While other thoughts were racing through her brain.
They trembled in Time's flow and in its wake,
Like in a graveyard tottering tomb-stones shake.

Twee Partijen

Er zijn twee hachelijke
partijen: één strevende
naar het belachelijke,
dat is die der levenden;

en één van gezag,
dat is die der doden;
en als het aan mij lag
waren beide verboden.

Lag het aan mij
dan stichtte ik graag,
en liefst nog vandaag,
een derde partij.

De 'Waar Alleen Zij
Die Nergens Toe Horen,
Toe Horen Partij'
zij hierbij geboren.

Ik nodig degenen
die zich klimdrab
of zitsteen menen
tot lidmaatschap,

en maak bekend
dat dit gedicht
zich tot hen richt
als president;

want evenals
gesprek en spook
heeft het geen leven
en geen dood ook.

Echt gisteravond gebeurd

Wij zaten gewoon naast elkaar
en keken als altijd naar de tv
toen ik plotseling merkte: Nee,
dat is allemaal niet waar,

ik ben op een vreemde planeet
waar mijn vrienden mij achterlieten
en voor zover ik weet
zit ik eenzaam op visite.

Tegenover mij stond een lijst
waar een landschap in werd gereisd,
en waaruit tot overmaat
raar werd gepraat.

En ineens was dat weer niet waar
en we zaten opnieuw naast elkaar.

Wel blijft mij een bepaald
gevoel van onzekerheid:
wordt het niet langzaamaan tijd
dat ik word opgehaald?

Sluiting

Als ik morgen niet opsta
moet je niet schrikken:
per slot, elke opera
en alle toneelstukken
hebben hun ogenblikken,
het vallen van gordijnen
of andere ongelukken.
Dit is dan het mijne.

Sluit dus mijn gezicht,
doe die mond en twee ogen
maar netjes dicht
en ik ben voltooid.

Laat zo maar gaan,
en die oren mogen
nog openstaan,
want je weet nooit

Uit: Dark Star Safari

“To be an African leader was to be a thief, but evangelists stole people’s innocence, and self- serving aid agencies gave them false hope, which seemed worse. In reply, Africans dragged their feet or tried to emigrate, they begged, they pleaded, they demanded money and gifts with a rude, weird sense of entitlement. Not that Africa is one place. It is an assortment of motley republics and seedy chiefdoms. I got sick, I got stranded, but I was never bored. In fact, my trip was a delight and a revelation. Such a paragraph needs some explanation — at least a book. This book perhaps.
As I was saying, in those old undramatic days of my school- teaching in the bundu, folks lived their lives on bush paths at the ends of unpaved roads of red clay, in villages of grass-roofed huts. They had a new national flag to replace the Union Jack, they had just gotten the vote, some had bikes, many talked about buying their first pair of shoes. They were hopeful and so was I, a teacher living near a settlement of mud huts among dusty trees and parched fields. The children shrieked at play; the women, bent double — most with infants slung on their backs — hoed patches of corn and beans; and the men sat in the shade stupefying themselves on chibuku, the local beer, or kachasu, the local gin. That was taken for the natural order in Africa: frolicking children, laboring women, idle men. Now and then there was trouble: someone transfixed by a spear, drunken brawls, political violence, goon squads wearing the ruling-party T- shirt and raising hell. But in general the Africa I knew was sunlit and lovely, a soft green emptiness of low, flat-topped trees and dense bush, bird squawks, giggling kids, red roads, cracked and crusty brown cliffs that looked newly baked, blue remembered hills, striped and spotted animals and ones with yellow fur and fangs, and every hue of human being, from pink-faced planters in knee socks and shorts to brown Indians to Africans with black gleaming faces, and some people so dark they were purple.”

Uit: Blindly (Vertaald door Anne Milano Appel)

“MY DEAR COGOI, to tell the truth I'm not so sure that no one is able to write a man's life as well as he can, even though I was the one who wrote that. Of course, that sentence has a question mark. In fact, if I remember correctly—so many years have passed, a century, the world around us was young, a verdant, dewy-eyed dawn, still it was already a prison—if I remember correctly, that question mark, hauling all the rest along with it, was the very first thing I actually wrote down. When Dr. Ross urged me to write those pages for the yearbook, I would have liked to send him a batch of pages with just a nice big question mark and nothing else—it would have been the honest thing to do—but I didn't want to be impolite toward him, kindly and benevolent as he was, unlike the others, and then too it wasn't a good idea to irritate someone who could oust you from a comfortable niche, like the editorial office of the penal colony almanac, and send you to that hellhole, Port Arthur, where if you sat down to rest for even just a second, worn out from the rocks and icy water, you'd feel the cat-o'-nine-tails on your back.

So I only wrote the first sentence in front of that question mark, rather than my entire life ... mine, his, whoever's. Life, our grammar teacher Pistorius used to say—accompanying the Latin citations with calm, sonorous gestures in that room hung with red that darkened and faded away toward evening, childhood's embers glowing in the shadows—life is not a declaration or a statement but an interjection, a punctuation mark, a conjunction, at most an adverb. In any case, never one of the so-called principal parts of speech—"Are you sure that's what he said?"—Oh ... you're right, Doctor, it's possible that ... perhaps it wasn't he who used that expression, it must have been Miss Perich, subsequently Perini, the teacher in Fiume, but later on, much later.

Besides, that initial question can't be taken seriously since it implicitly contains the commonly known response, like a question in a sermon posed to the faithful in a rising tone. "Who so able to write a man's life as the living man himself?" No one, of course, you can almost hear the congregation murmur in response to the preacher. If there's one thing I've grown used to, it's rhetorical questions, ever since I wrote the sermons for Reverend Blunt, who paid me half a shilling apiece, in the prison in Newgate, while he played cards with the guards and waited for me to come and play too, that way he frequently got his half shilling back—nothing strange about that, I was in there mainly because I had lost everything gambling.”

The Dream Of Winter Night

‘Twas snowing. And to the snow,

To cold of the heaven and earth,

The deeper I slept the more grown

Was Chegem tulips’ warming blaze.

‘Twas snowing. Soul was singing

From whiteness of snow afar.

‘Twas snowing. Plane-trees were greening.

How green, dreams of winter, you are!…

There is again a change…

There is again a change in Nature,

the green is very rough in sight,

and rises – in a lofty fashion –

the figure of the mushroom, white.

And this old garden itself shows

all living woods and skies above,

and choices of my grace are posed

just on three faces that I love.

The body of the moth, so sightless,

dies in the lamp’s indifferent light,

marks fingers with its golden brightness,

and gives hand the non-pleasance, slight.

Oh, Lord, how in this best of summers,

my soul’s peace is long and great –

thus in a rainbow its colors

forbid one more to be inset.

Like this, a circle, fully ended,

inside it handles itself all,

and uselessness of each touch, added,

seem as unenvied and droll.

Mai 1813 in Leipzig geboren.

In Memoriam José Luis Sampedro

In Memoriam José Luis Sampedro

‘Eindelijk, vader! Kom, we gaan.

‘Wacht even. Wat is dat?’

‘Dat daar? Het heet De echtgenoten. Een Etruskische sarcofaag.’

‘Een sarcofaag? Een kist voor doden?’

‘Ja...
