Uit: Life of Pi

“The three-toed sloth lives a peaceful, vegetarian life in perfect harmony with its environment. "A good-natured smile is forever on its lips," reported Tirler (1966). I have seen that smile with my own eyes. I am not one given to projecting human traits and emotions onto animals, but many a time during that month in Brazil, looking up at sloths in repose, I felt I was in the presence of upside-down yogis deep in meditation or hermits deep in prayer, wise beings whose intense imaginative lives were beyond the reach of my scientific probing.

Sometimes I got my majors mixed up. A number of my fellow religious-studies students - muddled agnostics who didn't know which way was up, who were in the thrall of reason, that fool's gold for the bright - reminded me of the three-toed sloth; and the three-toed sloth, such a beautiful example of the miracle of life, reminded me of God.

I never had problems with my fellow scientists. Scientists are a friendly, atheistic, hard-working, beer-drinking lot whose minds are preoccupied with sex, chess and baseball when they are not preoccupied with science.

I was a very good student, if I may say so myself. I was tops at St. Michael's College four years in a row. I got every possible student award from the Department of Zoology. If I got none from the Department of Religious Studies, it is simply because there are no student awards in this department (the rewards of religious study are not in mortal hands, we all know that). I would have received the Governor General's Academic Medal, the University of Toronto's highest undergraduate award, of which no small number of illustrious Canadians have been recipients, were it not for a beef-eating pink boy with a neck like a tree trunk and a temperament of unbearable good cheer.”

Pis belle ! Quand on dit, une vraie catin ! Ah ! on l’a ben aimée, moé pis mes sœurs !

Eh ! qu’all’était donc belle ! Une vraie Shirley Temple ! Pis all’apprenait donc vite, à l’école !

GABRIELLE JODOIN – Quand all’a fini ses études primaires, on y’a demandé c’qu’a voulait faire. »

Uit: Hopeful Monsters

“But then there was a third image that my father gave me, different in kind from the others: which is of gravity being like the effect of two people sitting side by side on an old sofa so that the springs sag and they are drawn together in the middle: and there were my father and I sitting side by side on the sofa in his study.

I would say to my father ‘But is this true?’

My father said ‘Mathematically, it seems to be true.’

‘But is it really?’

‘Ah, what is really!’

I would think – But together, might not my father and I get beyond the backs of our heads in our airship?

Sometimes when my father and I had our arms around one another sitting like this my mother would put her head round the door of his study and say ‘Are you coming?’

My father would say ‘Coming where?’

‘To supper.’

“Ah yes, supper.’

Then my mother would perhaps advance into the room and say ‘What have you two been doing?’

‘Talking.’

‘It didn’t sound like talking to me!’

‘Thinking then.’

‘Do you have to sit like that when you think?’

And I would think – Oh do let us get through, yes, into some other dimension!

It was such conversations I had with my father that seemed relevant to the evening when the group of people round Rosa Luxemburg had been in our apartment (they being like the people on the vast and lonely plain) and when the young man and the girl stayed for supper.”

Ich will zugrunde gehn.

Ignatyevo Forest

The last leaves' embers in total immolation
Rise into the sky; this whole forest
Seethes with irritation, just as we did
That last year we lived together.

The path you take's reflected in our tear-filled eyes,
As bushes are reflected in the murky flood-lands.
Don't be difficult, don't touch, don't threaten,
Don't offend the forest silence by the Volga.

You can hear the old life breathing:
Clumps of mushrooms growing in damp grass -
Though gnawed to the very core by slugs,
They still inflame the skin.

All our past is like a threat -
Look, I'm coming, watch, I'll kill you!
The sky shivers and holds a maple, like a rose, -
May it burn still stronger - right into your eyes.

Uit: 1984

“But actually, he thought as he re-adjusted the Ministry of Plenty’s figures, it was not even forgery. It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another. Most of the material that you were dealing with had no connexion with anything in the real world, not even the kind of connexion that is contained in a direct lie. Statistics were just as much a fantasy in their original version as in their rectified version. A great deal of the time you were expected to make them up out of your head. For example, the Ministry of Plenty’s forecast had estimated the output of boots for the quarter at 145 million pairs. The actual output was given as sixty-two millions. Winston, however, in rewriting the forecast, marked the figure down to fifty-seven millions, so as to allow for the usual claim that the quota had been overfulfilled. In any case, sixty-two millions was no nearer the truth than fifty-seven millions, or than 145 millions. Very likely no boots had been produced at all. Likelier still, nobody knew how many had been produced, much less cared. All one knew was that every quarter astronomical numbers of boots were produced on paper, while perhaps half the population of Oceania went barefoot. And so it was with every class of recorded fact, great or small. Everything faded away into a shadow-world in which, finally, even the date of the year had become uncertain.”

Uit: The Tunnel  (Vertaald door Margaret Sayers Peden)

“There was only one tunnel, dark and solitary: mine, the tunnel where my childhood, my youth, my whole life had passed. And in one of those clear fragments of the stone wall I had seen this girl and I had naively thought that she was coming through another tunnel parallel to mine, when in reality she belonged to the wide world, the limitless world of those who do not live in tunnels.”

(…)

“More than any other, however, I detest groups of painters. Partly, of course, because painting is what I know best, and we all know that we have a greater reason to detest the things we know well. But I have still another reason: THE CRITICS. They are a plague I have never understood. If I were a great surgeon, and some fellow who had never held a scalpel in his hand, who was not a doctor, and who had never so much as put a splint on a cat's paw, tried to point out where I had gone wrong with my operation, what would people think? It is the same with painting.”

(…)

“My dear, I have never been able to finish a Russian novel. They are so tiresome. I think there are thousands of characters, and in the end it turns out there are only four of five. Isn’t it maddening just when you begin to recognize a man called Alexandre, he’s called Sacha, and then Satchka, and later Sachenka, and suddenly something pretentious like Alexandre Alexandrovitch Bunine, and later simply Alexandre Alexandrovitch. The minute you get your bearings, they throw you off the track again. There’s no end to it; each character is a whole family in himself."

Odeurs, couleurs, saveurs,

Colombes dans l'ailleurs
Du roucoulement.

Que ce monde demeure
Comme cesse le temps
Quand on lave la plaie
De l'enfant qui pleure.

La couleur à l'ombre,
L'or du fruit mûr à l'or
De la feuille sèche.

Uit: The Lion of Cairo

“Muscles knotted in Baber Khan’s bull neck as he twisted his head and spat. He wielded a salawar—the sword-knife of the Afghan tribesmen—two feet of shadow-patterned Damascus steel, older than Islam, with a single- edged blade that tapered to a diamond point and a hilt braided with leather and silver wire. A leering face carved of yellowed ivory glared from the pommel. “Your master? Your master is a coward who sits atop his rock and plays at empire! Bah! Think you I do not know who you are, dog of Alamut? You may have killed a score of my Afridis, but I have killed a thousand of your brothers, a thousand of your so-called Faithful!” Baber Khan raised his salawar, eyes blazing. “Come closer, my little Assassin! Come closer, and let me make it a thousand and one!”

The Assassin’s temper flared; with a guttural curse, he leaped for Baber Khan, his saber whistling in a vicious arc that should have struck the Afridi chieftain’s head from his shoulders . . . had he not been expecting it. Baber Khan ducked and twisted, his teeth bared in a death’s-head grin as he lashed out at the overextended Assassin.

It was sheer reflex which saved the younger man’s life. He glimpsed the descending salawar, watered steel burnished by pale winter light; he wrenched his body to the right and awkwardly threw his saber into the path of Baber Khan’s blade. Steel met steel with a resounding clash as the salawar—fragile though it seemed— shattered the Assassin’s saber near the hilt. The young killer screamed as the tip of the Afghan blade bit into his brow and sliced down his left cheek, missing the eye by a hairsbreadth.”

Uit: Ik wil mijn hart volgen (Interview in Trouw. November 2011)

Even daar voorbij stond een stuk bamboeheg.

Zijn derde boek “Live Another Day” kwam uit in 1949.

Ciardi schreef ook een reeks boeken over etymologie : “A Browser’s Dictionary” (1980), “A Second Browser’s Dictionary” (1983) en “Good Words to You” (1987).

Suburban

Yesterday Mrs. Friar phoned.'Mr. Ciardi,
how do you do?' she said. 'I am sorry to say
this isn't exactly a social call. The fact is
your dog has just deposited-forgive me-
a large repulsive object in my petunias.'

I thought to ask, 'Have you checked the rectal grooving
for a positive I.D.?' My dog, as it happened,
was in Vermont with my son, who had gone fishing-
if that's what one does with a girl, two cases of beer,
and a borrowed camper. I guessed I'd get no trout.

But why lose out on organic gold for a wise crack
'Yes, Mrs. Friar,' l said, 'I understand.'
'Most kind of you,' she said. 'Not at all,' I said.
I went with a spade. She pointed, looking away.
'I always have loved dogs,' she said, 'but really!'

I scooped it up and bowed. 'The animal of it.
I hope this hasn't upset you, Mrs. Friar.'
'Not really,' she said, 'but really!' I bore the turd
across the line to my own petunias
and buried it till the glorious resurrection

when even these suburbs shall give up their dead.

White Heron

What lifts the heron leaning on the air
I praise without a name. A crouch, a flare,
a long stroke through the cumulus of trees,
a shaped thought at the sky - then gone. O rare!
Saint Francis, being happiest on his knees,
would have cried Father! Cry anything you please

But praise. By any name or none. But praise
the white original burst that lights
the heron on his two soft kissing kites.
When saints praise heaven lit by doves and rays,
I sit by pond scums till the air recites
It's heron back. And doubt all else. But praise.

Men Marry What They Need

Men marry what they need. I marry you,
morning by morning, day by day, night by night,
and every marriage makes this marriage new.

In the broken name of heaven, in the light
that shatters granite, by the spitting shore,
in air that leaps and wobbles like a kite,

I marry you from time and a great door
is shut and stays shut against wind, sea, stone,
sunburst, and heavenfall. And home once more

inside our walls of skin and struts of bone,
man-woman, woman-man, and each the other,
I marry you by all dark and all dawn

and have my laugh at death. Why should I bother
the flies about me? Let them buzz and do.
Men marry their queen, their daughter, or their mother

by hidden names, but that thin buzz whines through:
where reasons are no reason, cause is true.
