Hoe liefde langzaam overging in kilte

Betrekkende mens

Langzaam neemt de mens
de schutkleur aan
van de aarde
die hem in steeds trager
welsprekende velden
en wegen van wolken betrekt
en ook de blaasbalg lucht
zijn piepend draaiorgel geworden
dan alom bekroond
met koude honger
met poriën voor regen en slaap
zijn ereteken zijn schamperste vuurslag
voldoende om de sterren ruwweg te ontbinden
verbergt hij taal en teken
in landschappen
die savonds dichtklappen
als een deur.

Gebeuren

Oud en ijdel van klank
de avond de vertraagde
dubbele films stilzwijgen
huiveren over hem toe
een mens tot de oksels
verzonken in het landschap slaakt
zijn wonderlijke kreet
zijn zwangerschap nooit zo heet
sluit snel ontlijvend
aarde zijn glimlach
met stenen zegelen af.

Empathie

Voorstel

Een middelgrote liefde
bestaande uit gebarentaal
lijkt ideaal. Niet spreken
of onnodig gevoelens kweken.
Gebaren maken.
Elkaar aanraken.
Huid tegen haar,
een liefde zonder vrees
of blaam of veel gevaar,
en wat men uit de handen leest
bepaalt de toekomst.
Haar geven wat haar toekomt
en krijgen wat men wenst
aan strelingen.
Dit is goedkoper dan men denkt
en verdrijft de verveling.

Zeitlos

Aus ihren Augen lacht die Freude,
Auf ihren Lippen blüht die Lust,
Und unterm Amazonenkleide
Hebt Mut und Stolz und Drang die Brust:

Doch unter Locken, welche fliegen
Um ihrer Schultern Elfenbein,
Verrät ein Seitenblick beim Siegen
Den schönen Wunsch, besiegt zu sein.

Willkommen kleine Bürgerin

Willkommen kleine Bürgerin
Im bunten Tal der Lügen!
Du gehst dahin, du Lächlerin!
Dich ewig zu betrügen

Was weinest du? die Welt ist rund
Und nichts darauf beständig.
Das Weinen nur ist ungesund
Und der Verlust notwendig.

Einst wirst du, kleine Lächlerin!
Mit süßerm Schmerze weinen
Wenn alle deinen treuen Sinn
Gott! zu verkennen scheinen.

Dann wirst du stehn auf deinem Wert
Und blicken, wie die Sonne
Von der ein jeder weg sich kehrt
Zu blind für ihre Wonne.

Bis daß der Adler kommen wird
Aus fürchterlichen Büschen,
Der Welten ohne Trost durchirrt -
Wie wirst du ihn erfrischen!

Fühl alle Lust

Fühl alle Lust, fühl alle Pein
Zu lieben und geliebt zu sein,
So kannst du hier auf Erden
Schon ewig selig werden.

Uit: The Loser (Vertaald door Robert Elsie en Janice Mathie-Heck)

“There comes a day when you get the impression that you’ve paid your dues to the world, the cycle is complete and there’s no more reason to ruminate on the past, in particular when your life has nothing of value to offer.
“What now?” you might ask.
Nothing. Just a confession.
One morning a couple of months ago, a friend of mine, Dorian Kamberi, a mechanical engineer and the father of two children, boarded a freighter called the Partisan and sailed across the Adriatic with his family. If I hadn’t had second thoughts at the last minute, I might be living in some refugee camp in that dreamland called Italy too, or somewhere else in Europe, together with a horde of my countrymen. But at the last minute, as we were sitting on deck squashed like sardines, I told Dori that I was getting off. It’s possible that he didn’t even hear what I’d said. After the trials and tribulations of our journey – a veritable Odyssey – from town to the ship, my words must have sounded absurd. If anyone other than my friend had been beside me, he’d have chucked me into the sea. Dori said nothing and just gave me a blank stare. The whole time, I could feel the warm pee of his little son, who I was still carrying on my shoulders, trickling down the back of my neck.
My hesitation must have been obvious to everyone. I’m sure that my voice and my face expressed exactly the opposite of what I was saying. Even a small attempt on Dori’s part to dissaude me would have been enough to cause me to abandon the decision I’d just taken, not really even knowing why. It wasn’t a question of homesickness. I didn’t feel anything at all, and my mind was as blank as the expression on Dori’s face. He made no move to stop me, and I disembarked,my neck still moist from his son’s soggy nappy. I sat down on the edge of the wharf and looked back at the last groups of refugees scrambling to get on board.”

Uit: The Society of Others

“My life is meaningless. I'm not getting any happier.
My late father says, "Your mother tells me you spend all day shut up in your room."
I say, "She does not lie."
He says, "There's a big wide world out there. You're not going anywhere so long as you stay shut up in your room."
I say, "There's nowhere to go."
He hates that. My negative attitude. I could tell him he's not going anywhere either. But why pop his balloon?
I like my room. I said before I don't want anything, but this isn't entirely true. I want my own room. I don't much care what's in it so long as it has a door I can shut and lock so people don't come asking me to do things. I expect maybe I'll spend the rest of my life in my room, and at the end I'll just die here and no one will find me and that's just fine with me.
This big wide world: first of all, it's not so big and wide. Really the world is only as big as your experience of it, which is not big at all. And what sort of world is it? I would characterise it as remote, uninterested, unpredictable, dangerous, and unjust. When I was small I thought the world was like my parents, only bigger. I thought it watched me and clapped when I danced. This is not so. The world is not watching and will never clap. My father doesn't get this, he's still dancing. It makes me quite sad to see him.”

Uit: The Sea Wolf

“Why, if there is anything in supply and demand, life is the cheapest thing in the world. There is only so much water, so much earth, so much air; but the life that is demanding to be born is limitless. Nature is a spendthrift. Look at the fish and their millions of eggs. For that matter, look at you and me. In our loins are the possibilities of millions of lives. Could we but find time and opportunity and utilize the last bit and every bit of the unborn life that is in us, we could become the fathers of nations and populate continents. Life? Bah! It has no value. Of cheap things it is the cheapest. Everywhere it goes begging. Nature spills it out with a lavish hand. Where there is room for one life, she sows a thousand lives, and it's life eats life till the strongest and most piggish life is left.”
(…)

““Do you know the only value life has is what life puts upon itself? And it is of course over-estimated since it is of necessity prejudiced in its own favour. Take that man I had aloft. He held on as if he were a precious thing, a treasure beyond diamonds or rubies. To you? No. To me? Not at all. To himself? Yes. But I do not accept his estimate. He sadly overrates himself. There is plenty more life demanding to be born. Had he fallen and dripped his brains upon the deck like honey from the comb, there would have been no loss to the world. He was worth nothing to the world. The supply is too large. To himself only was he of value, and to show how fictitious even this value was, being dead he is unconscious that he has lost himself. He alone rated himself beyond diamonds and rubies. Diamonds and rubies are gone, spread out on the deck to be washed away by a bucket of sea- water, and he does not even know that the diamonds and rubies are gone. He does not lose anything, for with the loss of himself he loses the knowledge of loss. Don't you see? And what have you to say?”

“Marie
Julie, Julie! [There is no answer.] Do you hear me Julie? Let her be! Come on. Let her be.
(Starts to go back)
[Julie enters, looks back angrily."]
Julie
Did you ever hear of such a thing? What's the matter with the woman anyway?
Marie
[Looking back again.]Here she comes again.
Julie
Let her come. I didn't do anything to her. All of a sudden she comes up to me and begins to raise a row.
Marie
Here she is. Come on, let's run. [Tries to urge her off.]
Julie
Run? I should say not. What would I want to run for? I'm not afraid of her.
Marie
Oh, come on. She'll only start a fight.
Julie
I'm going to stay right here. Let her start a fight.
Mks. Muskat [Entering.]
What do you want to run away for?
[To Julie.] Don't worry. I won't eat you. But there's one thing I want to tell you, my dear. Don't let me catch you in my carousel again. I stand for a whole lot, I have to in my business. It makes no difference to me whether my customers are ladies or the likes of you — as long as they pay their money. But when a girl misbehaves herself on my carousel — out she goes. Do you understand?”

Uit: Blauwbaard (Barbe Bleue)

Er was eens lang geleden
een schatrijk edelman,
die burchten en kastelen,
zo schoon men denken kan,

bezat; en al zijn kamers
en zalen, ruim gebouwd,
die schitterden en blonken
van marmer brons en goud.

De meubels waren kostelijk
gebeeldhouwd en verguld,
met zilveren serviezen
de kasten opgevuld.

Er hing in elke feestzaal
een lichtkroon van kristal,
kortom:
‘t was louter weelde
en luister overal

En toch, bij al zijn schatten
en overvloed op aard,
speet hem
één zaak geweldig:
hij had een blauwe baard.

En zo verschrikkelijk lelijk
stond dit de edelman,
dat, als men hem maar aankeek,
dan schrok men er toch van.

Uit: Shades of Grey

“So that’s why we’re back here, four days earlier, in the town of Vermillion, the regional hub of Red Sector West. My father and I had arrived by train the day before and overnighted at the Green Dragon. We had attended Morning Chant and were now seated for breakfast, disheartened but not surprised that the early Greys had already taken the bacon, and it remained only in exquisite odor. We had a few hours before our train and had decided to squeeze in some sightseeing.
“We could always go and see the Last Rabbit,” I suggested. “I’m told it’s unmissable.”
But Dad was not to be easily swayed by the rabbit’s uniqueness. He said we’d never see the Badly Drawn Map, the Oz Memorial, the color garden and the rabbit before our train departed. He also pointed out that not only did Vermillion’s museum have the best collection of Vimto bottles anywhere in the Collective, but on Mondays and Thursdays they demonstrated a gramophone.
“A fourteen- second clip of ‘Something Got Me Started,’ ” he said, as if something vaguely Red- related would swing it.
But I wasn’t quite ready to concede my choice.
“The rabbit’s getting pretty old,” I persisted, having read the safety briefing in the “How Best to Enjoy Your Rabbit Experience” leaflet, “and petting is no longer mandatory.”
“It’s not the petting,” said Dad with a shudder, “it’s the ears. In any event,” he continued with an air of finality, “I can have a productive and fulfilling life having never seen a rabbit.”
This was true, and so could I. It was just that I’d promised my best friend, Fenton, and five others that I would log the lonely bun’s Taxa number on their behalf and thus allow them to note it as “proxy seen” in their animal- spotter books. I’d even charged them twenty- five cents each for the privilege— then blew the lot on licorice for Constance and a new pair of synthetic red shoelaces for me.”

Uit: How I Paid for College

"What's wrong?" I ask.
She sighs and pats herself with a towel. (Always pats, never rubs. Rubbing is tough on the skin.) "Can you keep a secret?" she asks.
"Of course not," I say. "But when has that ever stopped you?"
She extends her pinky finger. "Pinky swear."
I link mine with hers. "Fine. Pinky swear. What is it?"
She looks around like she doesn't want to be overheard. "Do you remember how I told you about the night I let Dominick Ferretti take me behind the pizza oven?"
"Yeah."
"I lied."
"What? Why?"
"I didn't want you to think I was some kind of priss," she says. "You and Kelly have done practically everything."
This is an exaggeration. It's not like my girlfriend Kelly and I have gone all the way yet or even gone down on each other, but I guess compared to Paula's nunlike existence, we're something out of the Kama Sutra.
(Incidentally, I never believed that story about Dominick Ferretti.)
"You're not a priss," I say. "You're, uh . . ."
"Go ahead, say it. I'm too fat to get a boyfriend."
Let the record show: she said it, not me.
Paula flops down on a lounge chair like she's Camille taking to her sickbed. "What am I going to do? What kind of actress can I possibly hope to be if I'm still a virgin?" she says, grabbing me by the hand and yanking me down next to her. "Edward, you have to help me."
I adjust my shorts again. "Uh, listen, Sis, I'm totally flattered, but I don't think Kelly would . . ."

A Dagger

I always carry tightly under my belt
a small african steel dagger
-- like those that blacks are used to playing with --
that I bought from an old merchant in Algiers.

I remember, as if it were now, the old shopkeeper,
who looked like an old oil painting by Goya,
standing next to long swords and tattered uniforms,
saying in a hoarse voice the following words :

"This here dagger that you want to buy
legend has surrounded with eery stories,
and everyone knows that those who owned it at some time,
each has murdered one close to him.

Don Basilio murdered Donna Julia with it,
his beautiful wife, because she was unfaithful.
Conte Antonio, one night, his wretched brother
was slyly murdering with this here dagger.

A black his young lover out of jealousy
and some Italian sailor a Greek boatswain.
From hand to hand it passed and into mine.
Many things my eyes have seen, but this one makes me quiver.

Come close and look at it, it has an anchor and a crest,
it's light, why take it, it's not even a quarter,
but I would advise you to buy something else."
-- How much? -- Seven francs only. As long as you want it, take it.

A small dagger I have tightly in my belt,
that a whim made me make it my own;
and because I hate no one in the world to kill,
I am afraid lest some day I turn it against myself ...

Good Luck

Four hundred years ago
you landed in the Tropic of Capricorn
on the carbuncular plank
of ships
steered by dark stars
the pale beetle
of the seas
Every exile was a king
skinny, insomniac, colorless
as clay

You will create a world
from coarse laughter
from sterile glues
from coarse laughter
You will plant insurgent hatreds side by side
frustrated hatreds
You will invoke humanity, mist and frost
Among the lianas you will build a palace of termites
and from a tower circled by hills
bleating with sincere cincerre-bells
you will rise toward the moon
like hope

Space is a prison.

Abendmantel.
„Was ist jetzt wieder? Stehen Sie gern?“

Uit: An Englishman in Madrid (Vertaald door Nick Caistor)

“March 4, 1936
Dear Catherine,
Shortly after crossing the border and completing the tiresome customs formalities, I fell asleep, lulled by the rattle of the train wheels. Until then I had spent a sleepless night, tormented by the weight of the problems, alarms and crises our stormy relationship has created. All I could see through the carriage window was the dark night and my own reflection in the glass: the image of a man haunted by anguish. Dawn did not offer the relief often brought by the arrival of a new day. Clouds still filled the sky, and the pale, weak sun only served to render the scenery and my own internal landscape all the more desolate. In this state, on the verge of tears, I finally fell asleep. When I next opened my eyes, everything had changed. A radiant sun was shining in an endless, deep blue sky dotted with a few small, whiter than white clouds. The train was crossing the barren high plains of Castille. Spain at last!
Oh, Catherine, my beloved Catherine, if only you could see this magnificent spectacle you would understand my state of mind as I write these lines! Because it is not simply a geographical phenomenon or a change of scene, but something more, something sublime. In England and the north of France I have just travelled through, the countryside is green, the fields are fertile, the trees tall; and yet the sky is low, grey and damp, the atmosphere mournful. Here, on the other hand, the land is arid, the fields are dry and cracked and only seem to produce withered bushes, and yet the sky is boundless, the light heroic. In our country we always go around with our heads down, staring at the ground, feeling crushed; here, where the land offers nothing, people hold their heads high, and gaze at the horizon. It is a land of violence, passion, of grandiose individual gestures. Not like us, constrained by our petty morality and trivial social conventions.”

“Jamie’s face, white and shocked, loomed up on the other side of the tree. With the dim realization that what I was doing must sound unnervingly like cackling, I made a terrific effort and stopped. Panting, I stared at him for a moment.
“Yes,” I said, backing away, still heaving with gasps of unhinged laughter. “Yes, I am a witch! To you, I must be. I’ve never had smallpox, but I can walk through a room full of dying men and never catch it. I can nurse the sick and breathe their air and touch their bodies, and the sickness can’t touch me. I can’t catch cholera, either, or lockjaw, or the morbid sore throat. And you must think it’s an enchantment, because you’ve never heard of vaccine, and there’s no other way you can explain it.”
“The things I know—” I stopped backing away and stood still, breathing heavily, trying to control myself. “I know about Jonathan Randall because I was told about him. I know when he was born and when he’ll die, I know about what he’s done and what he’ll do, I know about Sandringham because … because Frank told me. He knew about Randall because he … he … oh, God!” I felt as though I might be sick, and closed my eyes to shut out the spinning stars overhead.
“And Colum … he thinks I’m a witch, because I know Hamish isn’t his own son. I know … he can’t sire children. But he thought I knew who Hamish’s father is … I thought maybe it was you, but then I knew it couldn’t be, and…” I was talking faster and faster, trying to keep the vertigo at bay with the sound of my own voice.
“Everything I’ve ever told you about myself was true,” I said, nodding madly as though to reassure myself. “Everything. I haven’t any people, I haven’t any history, because I haven’t happened yet.“

Threesome Dance

Let's go and dance a little,
Death, you and me.

He'll dig a well,
you, with the well's bucket
will haul up my blood.

Death will sow tranquillity,
you'll water the tranquillity,
I'll harvest the bones for you.

I'll gather them into a heap,
I'll knit them together,
and while I still have one
I'll lock up my heart in them.

Death will take a ruby from it,
place the ruby in your hands,
you will strike my head with it.

Death above the stone,
you on the stone,
I under the stone;
you and he before the altar,
I a wedding guest in finery
underneath the altar.

When we've danced our fill
we'll part again.

Each by his own mill
to be ground down tomorrow.

Brief an mein Kind (Fragment)

Uit: Cry The Beloved Country

“Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that's the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be too moved when the birds of his land are singing. Nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him if he gives too much.”
(…)

“ — This world is full of trouble, umfundisi.
— Who knows it better?
— Yet you believe?
Kumalo looked at him under the light of the lamp. I believe, he said, but I have learned that it is a secret. Pain and suffering, they are a secret. Kindness and love, they are a secret. But I have learned that kindness and love can pay for pain and suffering. There is my wife, and you, my friend, and these people who welcomed me, and the child who is so eager to be with us here in Ndotsheni – so in my suffering I can believe.
— I have never thought that a Christian would be free of suffering, umfundisi. For our Lord suffered. And I come to believe that he suffered, not to save us from suffering, but to teach us how to bear suffering. For he knew that there is no life without suffering.
Kumalo looked at his friend with joy. You are a preacher, he said.”

Storm Song

The clouds are scudding across the moon;
A misty light is on the sea;
The wind in the shrouds has a wintry tune,
And the foam is flying free.

Brothers, a night of terror and gloom
Speaks in the cloud and gathering roar;
Thank God, He has given us broad sea-room,
A thousand miles from shore.

Down with the hatches on those who sleep!
The wild and whistling deck have we;
Good watch, my brothers, to-night we'll keep,
While the tempest is on the sea!

Though the rigging shriek in his terrible grip,
And the naked spars be snapped away,
Lashed to the helm, we'll drive our ship
In the teeth of the whelming spray!

Hark! how the surges o'erleap the deck!
Hark! how the pitiless tempest raves!
Ah, daylight will look upon many a wreck
Drifting over the desert waves.

Yet, courage, brothers! we trust the wave,
With God above us, our guiding chart.
So, whether to harbor or ocean-grave,
Be it still with a cheery heart!
