The Garden

In the garden of the mind the best thought
will never bloom as beautifully as this
lily, lemon-yellow and freckled red,

four tongues lolling out of a single mouth
and speaking the dead language of silence.
We each take a different path: you into

the fountainous splash of asparagus;
me toward the cosmos bouncing like paper
stars in the breeze. Marriages are like this:

raveled by proximities, recited
in the vernacular of habit schooled
with the patience of bees. We hum our way

through the years, recollecting sometimes
the days when our hands and mouths, grafted
for the first time to another's, flowered

what we thought must be a whole new species.
Rooted in the tilled beds of youth, exotic,
those revelations sprang in us full-bloom.

Then, with practice, we came to realize
that planting the garden was just practice,
that our tongues and fingers, grown familiar

in the light of this world, were made to tend.
And that if desire for the original,
the virginal, slithers sometimes beneath

the leaf, it is cold-blooded, warms itself
in the promise of what's still possible,
then leaves. We meet at the end of rows—

me back from the cosmic, you from what feeds—
and find with chamberless ease the rhythm
of wingbeats between the ribs of our hands.

The Flight Of The Moon

I was singing on the toilet
when the moon
came rolling in

bare naked
on a bicycle
racing through a forest of metaphor
the moon came to meet me.

Along the road outside
a beautiful woman walks by, brushing her teeth.
On a park bench
a man in a maternity dress is drinking apple juice.
At the end of the century health is always in full phase.

A hole in the sky drops open.
Distress like the moon, a gloom like the moon are gone
and the likes
fly brightly round and round that hole.

The deep folds of the abyss smooth.
Across the now-blank suffering face
poets start to skate.

The moon... mine... another.

Uit:Whompyjawed

“I know some things. A guy can't grow up in Claude without not knowing something about the place. But what I understand best about my town is how it shuts down on game night, how dusk settles over the deserted Main Street with only the blinking of a single yellow light that sort of marks the center of Claude. And with the wind blowing dust and bits of trash along the sidewalks and gutters downtown, not a soul in sight, someone driving through on the interstate could just think a bunch of folks got tired of where they was at and decided to leave for good. Even the domino parlor gets dark and spooky and a fellow would have to strain to see all the posters and signs taped on the plate-glass window. Go by the Dairy Mart on the outskirts, all lit by fluorescent light inside showing it's open for business, but there ain't nobody eating and the parking lot is empty. That's game night. Don't want to see the game? Might as well drive to the stockyard to watch the cattle at the troughs. Might as well walk along the railroad tracks leading from town. Might as well try to learn Hindi from the new owners of the old Trail End Motel.
Not too long ago, when I was still a little kid, I used to climb the water tower on some game nights. I'd sit there with my legs sort of hanging into space, those peeling painted words over my head -- Claude, Home of the Fighting Tigers -- and I'd take in the WPA football field and park from where I was at. Way the hell up there, sometimes the wind was so dry and strong it'd get me tired, but I could see the bleachers on both sides of the field, the big lights glowing down on the grass. The cheering from below would come to me there. Sometimes I cheered too, even though I didn't know who was winning. But I could see the game. And on those Friday nights I knew everybody was there, all the old- timers and cowboys and housewives and kids and people I went to school with, all packed in and around the field, and me, no more than ten or eleven, so far above them that if I had drooled over the edge my spit would've disappeared before ever coming close to the ground.”

Uit: Raiders of the Nile

“Like any young Roman who found himself living in the most exciting city on earth—Alexandria, capital of Egypt—I had a long list of things I wanted to do, but taking part in a raid to steal the golden sarcophagus of Alexander the Great had never been among them.
And yet, there I found myself, on a morning in the month we Romans call Maius, doing just that.
The tomb of the city’s founder is located in a massive, ornate building in the heart of the city. A towering frieze along one side depicts the exploits of the world conqueror. The moment of inspiration that gave birth to the city itself, some 240 years ago, is vividly depicted on the frieze: Alexander stands atop a sand dune, staring at the shore and the sea beyond while his architects, surveyors, and engineers gaze up at him in wonder, clutching their various instruments.
So realistically sculpted and painted was this massive frieze that I almost expected the giant image of the conqueror to suddenly turn his head and peer down at us as we scurried below him, heading toward the building’s entrance. I would not have been surprised to see him raise an eyebrow and inquire in a booming, godlike voice, “Where in Hades do you fellows think you’re going? Why are some of you brandishing swords? And what is that the rest of you carry—a battering ram?”
But Alexander remained immobile and mute as my companions and I rushed past him and surged into the colonnaded entranceway.»

My home is in my heart (Fragment)

My home is in my heart
it migrates with me
The yoik is alive in my home
the happiness of children sounds there
herd-bells ring
dogs bark
the lasso hums
In my home
the fluttering edges of gáktis
the leggings of the Sámi girls
warm smiles

My home is in my heart
it migrates with me

You know it brother
you understand sister
but what do I say to strangers
who spread out everywhere
how shall I answer their questions
that come from a different world

How can I explain
that I cannot live in just one place
and still live
when I live
among all these tundras
You are standing in my bed
my privy is behind the bushes
the sun is my lamp
the lake my wash bow

How can I explain
that it moves with me
How can I explain
that others live there too
my brothers and sisters

What shall I say brother
what shall I say sister

A Midsummer Day

The locust gyres; the heat intensifies'
The rain-crow croaks from hot-leafed tree to tree:
The butterfly, a flame-fleck, aimlessly
Droops down the air and knows not where it flies.
Beside the stream, whose bed in places
The small green heron flaps; the minnows flee:
And mid the blackberry-lilies, wasp and bee
Drowse where the cattle pant with half-closed eyes.
The Summer Day, like some tired labourer,
Lays down her burden here and sinks to rest,
The tan of toil upon her face and hands:
She dreams, and lo, the heavens over her
Unfold her dream: Along the boundless West
Rolls gold the harvest of the sunset's lands.

A Wet Day

Dark, drear, and drizzly, with vapor grizzly,
The day goes dully unto its close;
Its wet robe smutches each thing it touches,
Its fingers sully and wreck the rose.

Around the railing and garden-paling
The dripping lily hangs low its head:
A brood-mare whinnies; and hens and guineas
Droop, damp and chilly, beneath the shed.

In splashing mire about the byre
The cattle huddle, the farmhand plods;
While to some neighbor's a wagon labors
Through pool and puddle and clay that clods.

The day, unsplendid, at last is ended,
Is dead and buried, and night is come;
Night, blind and footless, and foul and fruitless,
With weeping wearied and sorrow dumb.

Ah, God! for thunder! for winds to sunder
The clouds and o'er us smite rushing bars!
And through wild masses of storm, that passes,
Roll calm the chorus of moon and stars.

„Ich werde oft gefragt, warum ich denn eigentlich in Japan lebe. Was soll ich antworten?

Uit: Les Thibault, I, Le pénitencier

Warum macht Wasser nass? ...

Uit:The Cashier (Vertaald door Harry Binsse)

„It was still dark. The bed was warm, and the room quiet. Alexandre Chenevert had been awakened by what he thought was a noise, but was really a nagging recollection. One of his overcoat buttons was dangling loose by a single black thread. And then too, it was spring. Spring reminded him of the income tax. “If I should forget to have that button sewn on . . .” he reflected, and then the notion occurred to him that perhaps there wouldn’t be any war, simply because the weapons of today have such terrific killing power.
He did hope, however, that he would remain master of the thoughts about to wander through his mind. In days gone by, when he could still enjoy a good night’s sleep, he had occasionally gotten up at an unusually early hour, but it had been to take a trip into the country, to catch a train, and then once – what seemed a whole lifetime ago – it had been for an expedition to climb Mount Royal in the dawn. His present cruel sleeplessness, despite everything, was linked to former joys. He felt as though he was off on a jaunt, as though he might come back a new man; he even had some feeling of self- importance.
His brain tricked him into the belief that he was refreshed after so brief a rest. “Seeing I can’t get back to sleep,” Alexandre Chenevert cheerfully told himself, “I might as well turn it to good use. . . .” And he began thinking of Marshal Stalin, with his seminary education, of Tito, Yugoslav dictator, and of the brand- new silk umbrella he had mislaid yesterday, most likely on the streetcar. For a very long time he had bought himself only cotton umbrellas, the cheapest ones, the cloth of which wore out in no time. He had believed that in the long run it would be more economical to buy an umbrella which would be serviceable for years. And that was the one he had had to lose.”

Winter solstice

They asked the morello
when it most felt the cold,
to which it replied:
"On the night of the solstice."

They asked the rose
what crushed its root,
and it whispered:
"The day before Adam and Eve."

They asked the wolf
when the winter was at its hardest,
and it said:
"When the sun is born."

At the end of summer

I come across a tortoise
Cold sandy
Darkness

I see the horizon
A spider's thread couch-grass a hair

I hear a thin menacing whistling
Razor dagger knife

Does the tortoise see the horizon?
Does the tortoise hear a menacing whistling?

Sand shifts
Spiders weave
Couch-grass rustles

Hair, knife?

I hear autumn
The tortoise senses the darkness

De la faim et du froid, du sommeil et des nuits;

Uit: The Gamester

„Mrs. Bev. Speak to him, Charlotte; for I cannot.
Char. When I have wiped my eyes.
Jar. I have a little money, madam; it might have been more, but I have loved the poor. All that I have is yours.
Mrs. Bev. No, Jarvis; we have enough yet. I thank you though, and will deserve your goodness.
Jar. But shall I see my master? And will he let me attend him in his distresses? I'll be no expence to him: and 'twill kill me to be refused. Where is he, madam?
Mrs. Bev. Not at home, Jarvis. You shall see him another time.
Char. To-morrow, or the next day. O, Jarvis! what a change is here!
Jar. A change indeed, madam! My old heart akes at it. And yet methinks—But here's somebody coming.
SCENE IV.
Enter Lucy with Stukely.
Lucy. Mr. Stukely, Madam.[Exit.
Stu. Good morning to you, Ladies. Mr. Jarvis, your servant. Where's my friend, madam?
[To Mrs. Beverley.
Mrs. Bev. I should have asked that question of You. Have not you seen him to-day?
Stu. No, madam.
Char. Nor last night?”

Stoppel-veld

De velden liggen stoppelbloot,
geplunderd en geschoren;

kon bergen in haar wanden,

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
Beethoven as an innovative genius.

Sieben Leben

Sieben Leben möcht ich haben:
Eins dem Geiste ganz ergeben,
So dem Zeichen, so der Schrift.
Eins den Wäldern, den Gestirnen
Angelobt, dem großen Schweigen.
Nackt am Meer zu liegen eines,
Jetzt im weißen Schaum der Wellen,
Jetzt im Sand, im Dünengrase.
Eins für Mozart, für die milden,
Für die wilden Spiele eines.
Und für alles Erdenherzleid
Eins ganz, und ich habe -
Sieben Leben möcht ich haben! -
Hab ein einzig Leben nur.

Die Langverstoßne

Synagoge, Straßburger Münster, Seitenportal
Im Abendschatten hört erschrockne Seele,
Dies Bild betrachtend, ein geheimes Lied:
Die Langverstoßne ist die Sehrgeliebte,
Die Blickverhüllte, siehe, die Betrübte:
Sie wartet und sie weiß. Sie ist's, die sieht.

Uit: We Were a Handful (Vertaald door Mark Corner)

“The palace was a real hive of activity and everyone was dashing hither and thither. The hustle and bustle was biggest in the kitchen because this was where they were preparing the wedding feast. There were loads of monkeys there and they all had their hands full and were being rushed off their legs. There were other animals there too, all of them at work doing something. There was an elephant turning the mincer to make rissoles, and another elephant had a coffee mill between its legs and was grinding coffee with its trunk. Plucking poultry was the job of one small monkey while another was washing the vegetables and a third peeling the potatoes. A huge snake called an Indian rock python was kneading dough for apple strudel and a couple of parrots were sorting peas. A ginger tom who looked like our Honza was whisking egg-white and never even took a nibble for himself on the sly. I found this odd because Honza would wolf down everything and the Pa would hurl a shoe after him because of the way he goes for everything he can lay his paws on. There was a bear chopping wood, a dog stirring thickener into the soup and it looked as if the whole place was there for one thing only – work.”

Uit: The Cruel Sea

“They were returning to Liverpool with convoy BK.108 consisting of thirty-eight ships. The Bar Light Vessel was some nine miles ahead and VIPEROUS had instructed COMPASS ROSE to move to the head of the convoy to lead it in. The convoy was forming into single line, ready for the narrow passage up the sea channels, and COMPASS ROSE had at least six miles to make up before she was on station at the head of the column. COMPASS ROSE could not rival VIPEROUS's swift get-away, but she did her best: the hull throbbed as the revolutions crept upwards, and presently they were passing ship after ship to their way to the front of the convoy. Lockhart noticed, without paying much attention to it, that the sun had gone in and that it turned suddenly colder, but he was not prepared for what happened after. They were just drawing level with the fourth ship in the convoy, and he had sighted the Bar Light Vessel about two miles ahead of them when it disappeared; and as he stared round him, unwilling to believe that visibility could have deteriorated so swiftly, the convoy disappeared also, sponged out like chalk from a slate. It was fog, fog coming down from the north, fog blowing across their path as thick as a blanket and blotting out everything on the instant.

Lockhart leaned over the front of the bridge, momentarily appalled, The fog enveloped them in great wafts of vapour, cold and acrid; he could see the tip of their gun barrel, twenty feet in front of him, and nothing more at all - no sea, no ships, not even COMPASS ROSE's own stem.”
