Uit: Something Cloudy, Something Clear

“KIP. [extending his hand through the window] Oh. Yes, we met last night. Do you have any drinking water in here?
AUGUST. A bottle of tepid soda.
KIP. Fine. Anything wet but not salty.
CLARE. [to Kip] I’m about to deliver a lecture to him on making concessions in art.
KIP. For or against?
CLARE. I think any kind of artist — a painter like Van Gogh, a dancer like Nijinsky –
AUGUST. Both of them went mad.
CLARE. But others didn’t, refused to make concessions to bad taste and yet managed survival without losing their minds. That’s purity. You’ve got to respect it or not.

AUGUST. I do, I will. But it will be years before I’ve mastered the craft of my work. I’ll try to survive the time till then.
CLARE. You’re young and strong and healthy. I don’t know your talent, but if you do and it’s good — forget concessions.
AUGUST. You have a rather precocious — knowledge of such things.
CLARE. Had to have that, exigency of –
AUGUST. — Survival?
CLARE. Had to have that early.
AUGUST. Why so early?
CLARE. My family in Newport, Rhode Island, were shocked by my lack of the conventions they valued too much.
KIP. Wow! I’ll continue my exercises. [He returns to the platform. Over the following he begins a series of slow, lyrical warmup exercises which will blend gracefully, later, into the pavane]".

The American Way

1
I am a great American
I am almost nationalistic about it!
I love America like a madness!
But I am afraid to return to America
I'm even afraid to go into the American Express—

2
They are frankensteining Christ in America
in their Sunday campaigns
They are putting the fear of Christ in America
under their tents in their Sunday campaigns
They are driving old ladies mad with Christ in America
They are televising the gift of healing and the fear of hell
in America under their tents in their Sunday
campaigns
They are leaving their tents and are bringing their Christ
to the stadiums of America in their Sunday
campaigns
They are asking for a full house an all get out
for their Christ in the stadiums of America
They are getting them in their Sunday and Saturday
campaigns
They are asking them to come forward and fall on their
knees
because they are all guilty and they are coming
forward
in guilt and are falling on their knees weeping their
guilt
begging to be saved O Lord O Lord in their Monday
Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
and Sunday campaigns

Uit: A Shower (Vertaald door broeder Anthony van Taizé)

“The white pebble came flying over.
The boy found himself standing up.
Shaking her bobbed hair, she goes running off. She took the path between the reed beds. Then there was nothing but pale reed heads shining bright in the clear autumn sunlight.
The girl would soon reappear on the far side of the reeds. Then he began to think she was taking a long time. Still she did not appear. He stood on tiptoe. And he began to think she was taking an extremely long time.
Far away on the other side of the patch of reeds, a bunch of reeds was moving. The girl was hugging the reeds. Now she was walking slowly. The exceptionally bright sunshine shone on the girl’s reed-like hair. It was as if a reed, not the girl, was walking across the fields.
The boy remains standing there until that reed can no longer be seen. Suddenly he looked down at the pebble she had thrown at him. The moisture had dried. He picked it up and put it in his pocket.
Starting the next day, he came down to the stream a little later. There was no trace of her. A good thing, too.
It was strange, though. As the days without a sign of her went by, somewhere in the boy’s breast a feeling of loneliness was growing. He got into the habit of fingering the pebble in his pocket.
One day, the boy sat down in the middle of the stepping stones, just where the girl had sat playing with the water. He dipped his hand in the water. He wiped his face. He stared into the water. His darkly tanned face looked back at him. He hated it.
The boy grabbed at the face in the water with both hands. Several times he grabbed at it. Then he suddenly sprang up in surprise. Why, the girl is coming, walking in this direction!”

Uit: The Lieutenant of Inishmore

„Davey And I wasn’t hairing at all, I was going slow. And a black lump ahead in the road I saw, and what the devil’s that, I said to meself. . .
Donny After you’d rode over him, aye, and then probably reversed!
Davey Ahead in the road, I’m saying, and don’t be slinging reversed at me.
Donny I’ll be slinging what I like!
Davey And I was off me bike be that time anyway and just wheeling it along, and when I saw it was Wee Thomas didn’t I scoop him up and run him into you as quick as me legs could carry me?
Donny The first thing the books say is don’t be moving an accident victim till professional fecking help arrives, and a fool knows that!
Davey Well, I don’t be reading books on cats being knocked down, Donny!
Donny Well, maybe you should, now . . .
Davey Because there are no such books!
Donny . . . And maybe Thomas would still be with us then.
Davey A car it must have been clobbered him.
Donny No cars have been down that road all day, and when do cars ever come down that road? You’re the only bastard comes down that lonely road and why? Because you’re a cowshite eejit with nothing better to do than roar down roads on your mam’s bicycle for no reason other than to feel the wind in that girl’s mop o’ hair of yours!”

Flower-Gathering

I left you in the morning,
And in the morning glow,
You walked a way beside me
To make me sad to go.

Do you know me in the gloaming,
Gaunt and dusty gray with roaming?
Are you dumb because you know me not,
Or dumb because you know?

All for me and not a question
For the faded flowers gay
That could take me from beside you
For the ages of a day?

They are yours, and be the measure
Of their worth for you to treasure,
The measure of the little while
That I've been long away.

Gathering Leaves

Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons.

I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away.

But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face.

I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then?

Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color.

Next to nothing for use.
But a crop is a crop,
And who's to say where
The harvest shall stop?

Uit: A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories

“The grandmother didn't want to go to Florida. She wanted to visit some of her connections in east Tennes- see and she was seizing at every chance to change Bailey's mind. Bailey was the son she lived with, her only boy. He was sitting on the edge of his chair at the table, bent over the orange sports section of the Journal. "Now look here, Bailey," she said, "see here, read this," and she stood with one hand on her thin hip and the other rattling the newspaper at his bald head. "Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn't answer to my conscience if I did."
Bailey didn't look up from his reading so she wheeled around then and faced the children's mother, a young woman in slacks, whose face was as broad and innocent as a cabbage and was tied around with a green head-kerchief that had two points on the top like rabbit's ears. She was sitting on the sofa, feeding the baby his apricots out of a jar. "The children have been to Florida before," the old lady said. "You all ought to take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad. They never have been to east Tennessee."
The children's mother didn't seem to hear her but the eight-year-old boy, John Wesley, a stocky child with glasses, said, "If you don't want to go to Florida, why dontcha stay at home?" He and the little girl, June Star, were reading the funny papers on the floor.
"She wouldn't stay at home to be queen for a day," June Star said without raising her yellow head.
"Yes and what would you do if this fellow, The Misfit, caught you?" the grandmother asked.
"I'd smack his face," John Wesley said.”

MY HEART EMBARKS from my body to your body
on its last voyage.
Offspring of light,
ageless waters that in you, woman astray, are born.
Come to my thirst. Now.
After everything. Before.
Come to my thirst long savoured
in mouths, scarce well-springs.
I love that rapt harp that lulls wild children
in your womb.
I love that taut moisture that arouses you,
that watery moisture that burns you.
Woman, gentle muscle.
The skin of a kiss between your breasts’
darkened surf
roams in my mouth
and measures blood.
You, too. And it isn’t too late.
We can still die in each other’s arms:
this no-man’s land is yours and mine.
Woman, hatred’s tenderness, ancient mother,
poison, flame, absence, bitter,
bitter sea, I want to enter,
penetrate, cross you.
Each cell is female, open country,
parted waters—a thing that opens.
I was born to enter you.
I’m the arrow lodged in the loin of a dying gazelle.
I’m poised to know you,
grain of anguish in a bird’s heart.
I’ll be upon you, and every woman
everywhere will have a man on top of her.

Uit:The Lesson

"This is the place, " Miss Moore say, presenting it to us in the voice she uses at the museum. "Let's look in the windows before we go in."
"Can we steal?" Sugar asks very serious like she's getting the ground rules squared away before she plays. "I beg your pardon," say Miss Moore, and we fall out. So she leads us around the windows of the toy store and me and Sugar screamin, "This is mine, that's mine, I gotta have that, that was made for me, I was born for that," till Big Butt drowns us out.
"Hey, I'm goin to buy that there."
"That there? You don't even know what it is, stupid."
"I do so," he say punchin on Rosie Giraffe. "It's a microscope."
"Whatcha gonna do with a microscope, fool?"
"Look at things."
"Like what, Ronald?" ask Miss Moore. And Big Butt ain't got the first notion. So here go Miss Moore gabbing about the thousands of bacteria in a drop of water and the somethinorother in a speck of blood and the million and one living things in the air around us is invisible to the naked eye. And what she say that for? Junebug go to town on that "naked" and we rolling. Then Miss Moore ask what it cost. So we all jam into the window smudgin it up and the price tag say $300. So then she ask how long'd take for Big Butt and Junebug to save up their allowances. "Too long," I say. "Yeh," adds Sugar, "outgrown it by that time." And Miss Moore say no, you never outgrow learning instruments. "Why, even medical students and interns and," blah, blah, blah. And we ready to choke Big Butt for bringing it up in the first damn place.”

The Presbytery Has Lost None Of Its Charm …

The presbytery has lost none of its charm
Nor how a garden’s radiance can disarm,
Restoring hand to dog, and bridle to stallion:
But this explanation fails this mystery.
A plague on insight that cracks your talons,
The analysis that dispels your sense of alarm,
Wearing a preposterous cop’s cap for a perm,
Pointing out here the just and there the felon.
No explanation can redeem a mystery
I prefer the faded charms of the presbytery
And the sham radiance of a famous garden;
I prefer (it’s in my nature) the shuddery
Of fear obliterated by this tiny thief’s particularity
to blatancy and fame, like some lamp of Aladdin.

Am Feste Mariä Verkündigung

Ja, seine Macht hat keine Grenzen,
Bei Gott unmöglich ist kein Ding!
Das soll mir wie mein Nordlicht glänzen,
Da meine Sonne unterging.
Und wie auf blauen Eisesküsten
Steh' ich zu starrer Winterzeit:
Wie soll ich noch das Leben fristen!
Ach, keine Flamme weit und breit!
Und sieh, er winkt' dem milden Lenzen,
Daß er die tote Erd' umfing?
Ja, seine Macht ist ohne Grenzen,
Bei Gott unmöglich ist kein Ding!

O sehet, wie von warmen Zähren
Der Erde hartes Herz zerquillt,
Wie sie, die Blumen sein zu nähren,
Mit Tau die grauen Wimpern füllt!
Auch in die längst erstorbnen Äste
Gießt sich ein Leben wunderbar,
Und alle harren seiner Gäste,
Der Blätter lebensfroher Schar.
Was soll ich denn der Hoffnung wehren,
Daß meiner Zähren Flehn gestillt,
Da ja sogar von warmen Zähren
Der Erde hartes Herz zerquillt?

Kannst du die Millionen Blätter
Aus diesen todten Ästen ziehn
Und aus dem ausgebrannten Wetter
Der Lavafelsen frisches Grün:
Was soll mein Herz zu hart dir scheinen,
Wo doch der gute Wille brennt,
Das sich dir glühend möchte einen,
Wenn es sich starrend von dir trennt?
Und soll nicht, mein allmächt'ger Retter,
Auch mir ein farblos Kraut entblühn,
Da du die Millionen Blätter
Kannst aus den toten Ästen ziehn!

O, möchte nur die Demut keimen!
Vertrocknet ist die Herrlichkeit.
Wohl durft' ich sonst mir Andres träumen;
Doch wie ein Blitz ist jene Zeit.
Zwar kann ich mich in Reue sehnen,
ich kann verwerfen meine Tat,
Doch nicht erfrischen meine Tränen,
Sie fallen sengend auf die Saat;
Und Frost und Hitze muß sich reimen,
Daß keine Blume mir gedeiht.
O, möchte nur die Demut keimen!
Vertrocknet ist die Herrlichkeit.

So ist doch von den Blumen allen
Marienblümlein milder Art;

Da ich gesucht, was Leben kündet.
Doch hast du, Herr, mich ausersehn,
Daß ich soll starr, doch festgegründet
Wie deine Felsenmauern stehn:
So brenne mich in Tatengluten
Wie den Asbest des Felsen rein!
Und kann ich dann kein Leben bluten,
So blut' ich Funken wie ein Stein.

Vergezocht

Elke nacht
vergrendelden we ritueel de deuren.

Er kwamen brieven die ik moest verscheuren
want niemand had van buiten iets verwacht.
Wat nodig was werd achter langs gebracht,
er waren geen contacten met de buren.

Exact het midden was de boekenkast:
verzameling betrouwbare verhalen.
Herhaaldelijk vertelden we elkaar

van zijn gelovig repertoire, en Dylan knikt;

of liefdeloosheid. Men kan veilig alles kwijt.
