Bos onderweg

Iedere nacht, klokslag elf
komt het dode bos voorbij.

Zorgvuldig verzaagd en gestapeld
op de vele treinwagons.

De trein is lang. Heel lang.

Eens zong de aanwakkerende wind
door alle kruinen van zijn bomen.

Over de rijdom van de bewoonde werelden

In enkele werelden heeft men Riemanns
vermoeden over priemgetallen bevestigd.

In enkele werelden dwingt men

bontbeklede lichtgrijze cocons.

In enkele werelden is zelfs dit gedicht
al geschreven en verworpen.

December

“Once you have realised that there is no objective external world to be found; that what you know is only a filtered and processed version, then it is a short step to the thought that, in that case, other people too are nothing but a processed shadow, and but a short step more to the belief that every person must somehow be shut away, isolated behind their own unreliable sensory apparatus. And then the thought springs easily to mind that man is, fundamentally, alone. That the world is made up of disconnected consciousnesses, each isolated within the illusion created by its own senses, floating in a featureless vacuum.
He does not put it so bluntly, but the idea is not far away. That, fundamentally, man is alone.”
(...)

“She said she had been thinking about the way you remembered your past. What you remembered, she said, was a string of events and years stretching back from the point where you now found yourself. In other words, a line of time. This might be coloured differently, depending upon what had happened to you. For example, if you had lost someone then it would be black. Other spots might be lighter. On some sections of the line time would have passed quickly, on other sections more slowly. But, for a long way back, it would still be a line. Though not all the way back – at any rate, not in her case – and what about me? She asked me to think about it. For her, she said, and maybe for everyone, if you went far enough back the line disintegrated. If you went all the way back to your early childhood it was no longer a line. Then there was a sort of landscape of events. You could not remember their sequence, maybe they had none, they just lay scattered about, as if on a plain. She believed that this plain belonged to the days before time had entered your world.”

Uit:Brian's Return

“Brian sat quietly, taken by a peace he had not known for a long time, and let the canoe drift forward along the lily pads. To his right was the shoreline of a small lake he had flown into an hour earlier. Around him was the lake itself, an almost circular body of water of approximately eighty acres surrounded by northern forest—pine, spruce, poplar and birch—and thick brush.
It was late spring—June 3, to be exact—and the lake was teeming, crawling, buzzing and flying with life. Mosquitos and flies filled the air, swarming on him, and he smiled now, remembering his first horror at the small blood drinkers. In the middle of the canoe he had an old coffee can with some kindling inside it, and a bit of birchbark, and he lit them and dropped a handful of green poplar leaves on the tiny fire. Soon smoke
billowed out and drifted back and forth across the canoe and the insects left him. He had repellant with him this time—along with nearly two hundred pounds of other gear—but he hated the smell of it and found it didn't work as well as a touch of smoke now and then. The blackflies and deerflies and horseflies ignored repellant completely—he swore they seemed to lick it off—but they hated the smoke and stayed well off the
canoe. The relief gave him time to see the rest of the activity on the lake. He remained still, watching, listening.”

In ’t lof

Het nonneke zit gebogen,
Stil aan de kerkpilaar;
De gele lichtjes flikkren
Ginds, op het hoogaltaar.

De gele lichtjes flikkren,
Het orgel dreunt en schalt;
De wierookwalmen stijgen,
En de avondschemering valt.

De wierookwalmen stijgen,
De kerkzang sleept haar mee,
En wiegt haar zacht in dromen
Van rust en hemelvreê.

En wiegt haar zacht in dromen,
Allengskens, onbewust; -
Gezang en orgel zwijgen,
En de kerke ligt in rust.

Gezang en orgel zwijgen,
De laatste stap galmt heen…
Zij zit nog stil te dromen,
In ’t schemeruur alleen.

Abda

Uit: Stand up, Nigel Barton

“Nigel Barton: Eh dad, why do you always walk in the middle of the road?
Harry Barton: I don't know.
Nigel Barton: What do you think the pavement's for?
Harry Barton: Dogs to poop in, by the looks of things!
Harry Barton: Clever sod, aren't you? I expect they think the sun shines out of you down at Oxford.
Nigel Barton. Up.
Harry Barton: What?
Nigel Barton. Up, dad. Up.
Harry Barton: Aye, and up you, too!
Nigel Barton: Everyone says 'Up at Oxford'. You come 'down' when you've finished there.
Harry Barton: Well, what's this then? Does bloody Oxford move up and down the bloody map then?
Georgie Pringle: The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother: And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.
Pringle, "the class comic", has been asked to choose the bible reading for a secondary school class. He has a reputation for knowing "all the dirty bits in the bible off by heart," according to Nigel Barton's narration. The quote is from Ezekiel, chapter 23, verses 1-3.
Miss Tillings: Stand up, Nigel Barton! Well, Nigel, do you know anything about this? I can't believe it was you!”

“There would be no more silent sunny mornings with all the day ahead and nothing to do and no end anywhere to anything; no more sitting at the open window in the dining-room, reading Lecky and Darwin and bound "Contemporary Reviews" with roses waiting in the garden to be worn in the afternoon, and Eve and Harriett somewhere about, washing blouses or copying waltzes from the library packet... no more Harriett looking in at the end of the morning, rushing her off to the new grand piano to play the "Mikado" and the "Holy Family" duets. The tennis-club would go on, but she would not be there. It would begin in May. Again there would be a white twinkling figure coming quickly along the pathway between the rows of holly-hocks every Saturday afternoon.
Why had he come to tea every Sunday—never missing a single Sunday—all the winter? Why did he say, "Play 'Abide with me,'" "Play 'Abide with me'" yesterday, if he didn't care? What was the good of being so quiet and saying nothing? Why didn't he say "Don't go" or "When are you coming back?" Eve said he looked perfectly miserable.
There was nothing to look forward to now but governessing and old age. Perhaps Miss Gilkes was right.... Get rid of men and muddles and have things just ordinary and be happy. "Make up your mind to be happy. You can be perfectly happy without anyone to think about...." Wearing that large cameo brooch—long, white, flat-fingered hands and that quiet little laugh.... The piano-organ had reached its last tune. In the midst of the final flourish of notes the door flew open. Miriam got quickly to her feet and felt for matches.“

A Valediction Forbidding Mourning

My swirling wants. Your frozen lips.
The grammar turned and attacked me.
Themes, written under duress.
Emptiness of the notations.

They gave me a drug that slowed the healing of wounds.

I want you to see this before I leave:
the experience of repetition as death
the failure of criticism to locate the pain
the poster in the bus that said:
my bleeding is under control

A red plant in a cemetary of plastic wreaths.

A last attempt: the language is a dialect called metaphor.
These images go unglossed: hair, glacier, flashlight.
When I think of a landscape I am thinking of a time.
When I talk of taking a trip I mean forever.
I could say: those mountains have a meaning
but further than that I could not say.

To do something very common, in my own way.

Prospective Immigrants Please Note

Either you will
go through this door
or you will not go through.

If you go through
there is always the risk
of remembering your name.

Things look at you doubly
and you must look back
and let them happen.

If you do not go through
it is possible
to live worthily

to maintain your attitudes
to hold your position
to die bravely

but much will blind you,
much will evade you,
at what cost who knows?

The door itself
makes no promises.
It is only a door.

Power

Living in the earth-deposits of our history

Today a backhoe divulged out of a crumbling flank of earth
one bottle amber perfect a hundred-year-old
cure for fever or melancholy a tonic
for living on this earth in the winters of this climate.

Today I was reading about Marie Curie:
she must have known she suffered from radiation sickness
her body bombarded for years by the element
she had purified
It seems she denied to the end
the source of the cataracts on her eyes
the cracked and suppurating skin of her finger-ends
till she could no longer hold a test-tube or a pencil

She died a famous woman denying
her wounds
denying
her wounds came from the same source as her power.

Couveuse

vandaag. Kijk hoe stil ze zijn nu,
niet ontwaken uit hun boze droom.

Erheen, steeds maar weer erheen;
in kijken schuilt nog altijd wat
beweging en in traanvocht hoop.

Kijken - en vooral niets zeggen,
want in het woord loert gevaar:
is het gezegd, dan is het waar.

Overlevering

herinnering. Maar geen beter antwoord

op de vraag waar je vandaan komt
dan beelden van september:

zonlicht over water, torens
in een rode avond en klein

de haven, waar twee geliefden
klinken op het einde van

hun zomer en hun jeugd.

Uit: Geharnischte Sonnette

VIII.
Wenn nicht ein Zaubrer mit Medeas Künsten
das matte Haupt’ euch schneidet ab vom Rumpfe,
Eh’ es in Altersschwäche gar verschrumpfe,
Und neu es füllt mit jungen Lebensdünsten!

Wenn nicht ein Alchimist mit Feuersbrünsten
Ganz eur Geschlecht einschmelzt mit Stiel und Stumpfe;

IX.
Sprengt eure Pforten auf, ihr Kaukasusse,
Und speiet Waffen! brecht durch eure Dämme,
Ihr Wolgaströme, macht aus Felsen Schwämme,
Braust über Deutschland hin in Siegsergusse! –

Was will auf deinen Feldern denn der Russe,
Deutschland? dir beistehn! Hast du keine Stämme
Im eignen Wald mehr, dich zu stützen? Memme,

Uit: No Dogs Bark (Vertaald door George D. Schade)

"I'm not doing all this for you. I'm doing it for your dead mother. Because you were her son. That's why I'm doing it. She would've haunted me if I'd left you lying where I found you and hadn't picked you up and carried you to be cured as I'm doing. She's the one who gives me courage, not you. From the first you've caused me nothing but trouble, humiliation, and shame."
He sweated as he talked. But the night wind dried his sweat. And over the dry sweat, he sweated again.
"I'll break my back, but I'll get to Tonaya with you, so they can ease those wounds you got. I'm sure as soon as you feel well you'll go back to your bad ways. But that doesn't matter to me any more. As long as you go far away, where I won't hear anything more of you. As long as you do that--Because as far as I'm concerned, you aren't my son any more. I've cursed the blood you got from me. My part of it I've cursed. I said, 'Let the blood I gave him rot in his kidneys: I said it when I heard you'd taken to the roads, robbing and killing people--Good people. My old friend Tranquilino, for instance. The one who baptized you. The one who gave you your name. Even he had the bad luck to run into you. From that time on I said, 'That one cannot be my son.'
"See if you can't see something now. Or hear something. You'll have to do it from up there because I feel deaf."

To the Song

Wake as you want, but wake in me from sleep –
In cold, and numb and bottomless a deep.

I do not dream to say a single word,
But give a sign that you are in this world.

Not for a long, but only for a flash.
If not in verse – in sighs or cries of flesh.

Only your sigh or moan of complaint,
Only your chains’ incomprehensive chant.
