Hartstochtelijk madrigaal

lichaam binnendringen,
en word ik, vrouw, jezelf
en ben ik voor altijd bij jou,
terwijl jij tevergeefs naar mij zoekt
van oost naar west,
tot uiteindelijk de dood
ons beiden met zijn grauwe vlam verkoolt.

Romance van de zwarte smart

                               Voor José Navarro Pardo

De pikhouwelen van de hanen
graven zoekend naar de dageraad,
wanneer Soledad Montoya
de donkere berg afdaalt.
Geel koper haar lijf
dat geurt naar paard en schaduw.
Berookte aambeelden haar borsten
die ronde liederen jammeren.
Soledad: naar wie vraag je
zonder gezelschap, op dit uur?
Ik vraag naar wie ik wil,
trouwens gaat jou dat wat aan?
Ik kom zoeken wat ik zoek,
mijn vreugde en mijn eigen ik.
Soledad van mijn smarten,
een paard dat op hol slaat
rent tenslotte in zee
en de golven verzwelgen het.
Van de zee wil ik niet horen:
de zwarte smart bot uit
op de olijfgronden
bij geruis van blaren.
Soledad, wat heb je een smart!
Hoe zielig die smart!
Je huilt citroensap
zuur van wachten en van mond.
Wat een diepe smart! Waanzinnig
dool ik door mijn huis,
mijn twee vlechten over de grond
van de keuken naar het bed.
Wat een smart! Ik word
gitzwart van lijf en kleren.
Ach, mijn linnen hemden!
Ach, mijn papaveren dijen!
Soledad: was je lichaam
met leeuwerikswater,
en gun je hart rust,
Soledad Montoya.

Daar beneden zingt de rivier:
strook van hemel en lover.
Het nieuwe licht wordt
met pompoenbloemen gekroond.
O smart van de zigeuners!
Klare smart en immer eenzaam.
O smart die diep verborgen stroomt
en dageraad die nimmer komt.

The Little Mute Boy

The little boy was looking for his voice.
(The king of the crickets had it.)
In a drop of water
the little boy was looking for his voice.

I do not want it for speaking with;
I will make a ring of it
so that he may wear my silence
on his little finger

In a drop of water
the little boy was looking for his voice.

(The captive voice, far away,
put on a cricket’s clothes.)

Lectuur

in vloeiende bewoordingen.

Uit: Winter of the World

« Carla knew her parents were about to have a row. The second she walked into the kitchen she felt the hostility, like the bone-deep cold of the wind that blew through the streets of Berlin before a February snowstorm. She almost turned and walked back out again.
It was unusual for them to fight. Mostly they were affectionate--too much so. Carla cringed when they kissed in front of other people. Her friends thought it was strange: their parents did not do that. She had said that to her mother, once. Mother had laughed in a pleased way and said: "The day after our wedding, your father and I were separated by the Great War." She had been born English, though you could hardly tell. "I stayed in London while he came home to Germany and joined the army." Carla had heard this story many times, but Mother never tired of telling it. "We thought the war would last three months, but I didn't see him again for five years. All that time I longed to touch him. Now I never tire of it."
Father was just as bad. "Your mother is the cleverest woman I ever met," he had said here in the kitchen just a few days ago. "That's why I married her. It had nothing to do with . . ." He had tailed off, and Mother and he had giggled conspiratorially, as if Carla at the age of eleven knew nothing about sex. It was so embarrassing.
But once in a while they had a quarrel. Carla knew the signs. And a new one was about to erupt.
They were sitting at opposite ends of the kitchen table. Father was somberly dressed in a dark gray suit, starched white shirt, and black satin tie. He looked dapper, as always, even though his hair was receding and his waistcoat bulged a little beneath the gold watch chain.»

Uit: Sea Hearts

“The old witch is there,’ said Raditch, peering over thetop to Six-Mile Beach. ‘Well settled with her knitting.’‘It’s all right. We’re plenty,’ said Grinny.‘We’re plenty and we have business,’ James said with some bluster — he was as scared of her as anyone. He shook his empty sack. ‘We have been sent by our mams. We’re to provide for our families.’‘Yes, we’ve come all this way,’ said Oswald Cawdron.‘We have.’ And down the cliff we went. It was a poisonous day. Every now and again the wind would take a rest rompressing us to the wall, and try to pull us off it instead. We would grab together and sit, then, making a bigger person’s weight that it could not remove. Te sea was grey with white dabs of temper all over it; the sky hung full of ragged strips of cloud. We spilled out onto the sand. You can fetch sea-hearts two ways. You can go up the tide-wrack; you will find more there, but they will be harder, drier for lying there, and many of them dead. You can still eat them, but they will take more cooking and, unless your mam boils themthrough the night, more chewing. Tey are altogether more difficult. Tose of us whose mams had sighed or dads had smacked their heads for bringing that sort went downtowards the water. Grinny ran ahead and picked up the first heart, but nobody raced him; hearts lay all along the sea-shined sand there, plenty for all our families. They do not keep, once collected. They can lie drying in the tide- wrack for days and still be tolerable eating, but put them in a house and they’ll do any number of awful things: collapse in a smell, sprout white fur, explode themselves across your pantry-shelf. So there is no point grabbing upmore than your mam can use."

Uit: A Day in the Life of a Smiling Woman

“t was the kind of party at which nobody got introduced. The room was dark, lit only by candles in bottles, and although a certain amount of feeble shuffling was going on in the centre of the floor, most of the guests were grouped around yelling in a more or less cheery fashion to people whom they were lucky enough to know already. There was a lot of noise, both musical and conversational, and the general tone seemed to Humphrey to be rather high, a kind of cross between the intellectual and the artistic. He could hear from time to time words like ‘defence mechanism’ and ‘Harold Pinter’ being bandied about above the deafening body of sound. He supposed, upon reflection, that one might have expected this kind of thing from his host, a young man whom he had met in a pub the week before, who had been most pressing in his invitation, but who had hardly seemed to recognise Humphrey at all when he had duly arrived, some time ago. Now, after half an hour of total neglect, he was beginning to feel rather annoyed. He was in many ways a conventional young man, and had not the nerve to go and accost a group of strangers, who anyway seemed to be getting on quite nicely without him, simply in order to add his own unoriginal views on Harold Pinter. On the other hand, he did not really want to leave.”

Nordstadtsommernacht

Is’ doch egal. Mir nicht. Gut, »Camera«. Und wenn nichts läuft? Machen wir was anderes. Nicht schon wieder!

Ich will endlich joggen! Da musst du bis morgen warten. Nein, jetzt!

Sonnenflucht

SYSIFOS SCHLÄFT

Ewige Wanderung Lust
Mondlose Nacht
Der Berg verschwunden im Schwarz
Vom Felsen nur seine Härte
gegen das Fleisch
Die Schwerkraft des Schlafs
zerrt den Riesen ins Moos
Er bettet den Kopf
auf die verfluchte die Last

Die Leichen der Götter die Sterne
nicht oben nicht unten
Hinter der Stirn
etwas Licht
Unsichtbar lächelnd
träumt er Befreiung

Aus dem Berg flattern
schrecklich vertraut
die Mahre

Die Nacht verschlingt seinen Schrei

Hurling Crowbirds at Mockingbars (Hope is Not a Course of Action) - Fragment

If we were created in God’s image
then when God was a child
he smushed fire ants with his fingertips
and avoided tough questions.
There are ways around being the go-to person
even for ourselves
even when the answer is clear
clear like the holy water Gentiles would drink
before they realized
forgiveness is the release of all hope for a better past.

I thought those were chime shells in your pocket
so I chucked a quarter at it
hoping to hear some part of you respond on a high note.
You acted like I was hurling crowbirds at mockingbars
and abandoned me for not making sense.
Evidently, I don’t experience things as rationally as you do.

For example, I know mercy
when I have enough money for the jukebox.
You know mercy whenever someone shoves a stick of morphine
straight up into your heart.
It felt amazing
the days you were happy to see me

so I smashed a beehive against the ocean
to try and make our splash last longer.
Remember all the honey
had me lookin’ like a jellyfish ape
but you walked off the water in a porcupine of light
strands of gold
drizzled out to the tips of your wasps.
This is an apology letter to the both of us
for how long it took me to let things go.

Uit: Shortcut in Time

“The surface of the pool water was absolutely still. The lane floats had been pulled out and lined up along the deck. I went and stood at the entrance to the girls' changing area.
"Kurt!"
I waited a few seconds, and then entered. Everything in the girls' locker room was the same as the boys' except that the tile floor was dry.
"Kurt?" I said to establish my reason for being there.
My mom didn't swim and Kurt and I had no sisters. Vaughan had a sister named Flo, short for Flora. She was my age, pretty enough, I guess, behind her glasses, but with a perpetual frown of concentration on her face. She was, like her brother, the top student in her class, but being number one didn't appear to give her any enjoyment.
"Vaughan?" I said, in case she was there, searching for her brother, too, and wondering what I was doing in the girls' locker room.
When I finally went back out by the pool, the day had altered fractionally. A cloud across the sun improved visibility into the water. Down in the deep end was a shape that registered immediately as horribly out of place. I hurried around the pool's edge, the blue-on-cream tiles spelling out 5 FT., then 8FT., then 12 FT. The cloud passed. A flash of sunlight off the water made me cover my eyes. I examined the shape at the bottom of the pool indirectly, half afraid to confront what was there.”

Uit:The Well

“She imagines the feeling of being unseen and not known about while standing in one isolated place. She would be small and safe walking and pausing to stand still low down under the immense clear blue sky. Perhaps, she thinks, her fear might disappear. It might dissolve, dissipate itself into the light, gently moving air.
Thoughts of walking do not accompany night driving, such ideas at the outset of a long drive in a remote place are best put out of the mind.
The only tolerable part of the evening, Hester reflects, was Kathy's dancing. The girl's energetic rhythmic movements and the yellow dress, in spite of Rosalie Borden's unexpected attack, were by her perhaps one-sided standards, superb. She smiles to herself remembering the music and the dancing, Katherine forever imagining herself as John Travolta's rightful partner. And then there was the sweetness of Katherine's thoughtfulness, the way in which she put aside her own wishes to come over, knowing Hester's weakness for sweet things.
'Miss Harper, dear,' she hears still the piping but gentle voice, 'i thought you'd like the sherry trifle . . .'
Almost nodding off Hester gives way to some profound thoughts. 'Life,' she declares inside her head, 'is like a wood heap. People do things to ameliorate and to alleviate. With one little detail after another people move through life. it is like taking wood from the heap, one log at a time to the fire, or in summer, the slow stacking of one log upon another when a wood pile is being moved or rebuilt.' She yawns.”
