Gewitter am See

Ein Delta formt des Blitzes Feuer,
rückt schemenhaft den Berg ins Licht.
Die Wolke wird zum Ungeheuer,
das grollend dunklen Qualm erbricht.

Aus Spielgekräusel wachsen Wogen
die Anmut flieht in Hast den See.
Bedenklich hin zum Nass gebogen,
schwankt Segeltuch in wilder Bö.

Die Möwen schützen sich, sie ducken
sich schweigend in das Uferrohr.
Doch bald verebbt das Himmelszucken
und Blau strahlt kräftig wie zuvor.

Een beetje natuur

Een beetje natuur
soms voel ik daar wel voor
en plukje gras tussen de stoepstenen
of een zwieperige vlier

Lieveheersbeestjes
klein gekriebel op je arm
strandenvol een keer
toen je me aardig vond

In de achtertuin
bloeit een magnolia
en voor de kamerplanten
zorg ik steeds beter

Maar door Tarzan verkracht
naakt in een oerwoud
daar nu uitgerekend
ga jij nu dromen

Gaan

Ik zal gaan
O met genoegen zal ik gaan
met diepe vreugde en trompetgeschal
ik zal gaan

Als jij roept zal ik gaan
mijn werk mijn eten en mijn handen
zal ik laten staan
als jij roept zal ik gaan

Als jij roept in de morgen
in de middag in de avond
in mijn dromen in mijn waken
als jij roept zal ik gaan

Ik zal gaan
al breken ze mijn benen
al moet ik kreupel gaan
engelen binden dan mijn wagen
vleugels aan

Ik zal gaan

Ode aan mijn jas 8 (vorm)

poëzie te schrijven
die als een jas met je meegaat

ik haat je wel eens
altijd moet ik erop letten
dat ik je niet vergeet

soms lig je te wachten
in stoffige hoeken

door jou, omhulsel,
ondervind ik het leven
aan den lijve

ik groei in je vorm
waar ik steeds meer naar sta

Uit: Under the Volcano

“M. Laruelle shook his head.
''Nobody go there. Only dl0se who have nobody them with," the doctor said, slowly. He pocketed the lighter and looked at his watch, turning his wrist upwards with a neat flick. "Allons-nous-en," he added, "v3.monos," and laughed yawningly widl a series of nods that seemed to carry his body forward until his head was resting between his hands. Then he rose and joined M. Laruelle at the parapet, drawing deep breadls. "M, but this is the hour 1 love, with the sun coming down, when all the man began to sing and all dle dogs to shark-"
M. Laruelle laughed. While dley had been talking dle sky had grown wild and stormy to the south; the mourners had left the slope of the hill. Sleepy vultures, high overhead, deployed downwind. "About eight-thirty then, 1 might go to the cine for an hour."
"Bueno. 1 will see you this night then, in the place where you know. Remember, 1 still do not believe you are leaving to-morrow." He held out his hand which M. Laruelle grasped firmly, loving him. "Try and come to-night, if not, please understand 1 am always interested in your health."
"Hasta la vista."
"Hasta la vista."
-Alone, standing beside the highway down which he had driven four years before on the last mile of that long, insane, beautiful jow-ney from Los Angeles, M. Laruelle also found it hard to believe he was really going. Then the thought of to-morrow seemed well-nigh overwhelming. He had paused, undecided which way to walk home, as the little overloaded bus, Tomalln: ZOcalo, jounced past him downhill toward the barranca before climbing into Quauhnahuac. He was loth to take that same direction to-night.”

Heaven-Haven

I have desired to go
Where springs not fail,
To fields where flies no sharp and sided hail,
And a few lilies blow.

And I have asked to be
Where no storms come,
Where the green swell is in the havens dumb,
And out of the swing of the sea.

The Sea and the Skylark

On ear and ear two noises too old to end
Trench—right, the tide that ramps against the shore;
With a flood or a fall, low lull-off or all roar,
Frequenting there while moon shall wear and wend.

Left hand, off land, I hear the lark ascend,
His rash-fresh re-winded new-skeinèd score
In crisps of curl off wild winch whirl, and pour
And pelt music, till none ’s to spill nor spend.

How these two shame this shallow and frail town!
How ring right out our sordid turbid time,
Being pure! We, life’s pride and cared-for crown,

Have lost that cheer and charm of earth’s past prime:
Our make and making break, are breaking, down
To man’s last dust, drain fast towards man’s first slime.

To His Watch

Mortal my mate, bearing my rock-a-heart
Warm beat with cold beat company, shall I
Earlier or you fail at our force, and lie
The ruins of, rifled, once a world of art?
The telling time our task is; time’s some part,
Not all, but we were framed to fail and die—
One spell and well that one. There, ah thereby
Is comfort’s carol of all or woe’s worst smart.

Field-flown, the departed day no morning brings
Saying ‘This was yours’ with her, but new one, worse,
And then that last and shortest…

Wie Yvette Horner is?

Marigolds, 1960

You are dying. Why do we fight?
You find my first published poem –
‘Not worth the paper it’s printed on,’
You say. She gave him marigolds –

You are dying. ‘They’ve cut out my
Wheesht – I have to sit down
To wheesht – like a woman’ –
Marigolds the colour of autumn –

I need to hitchhike to Dublin
For Trinity Term. ‘I’ll take you
Part of the way,’ you say,
‘And we can talk if you like.’

And we talk and talk as though
We know we are just in time.
‘A little bit further,’ you say
Again and again, and in pain.

A few miles from Drogheda
You turn the car. We say goodbye
And you drive away slowly
Towards Belfast and your death.

To keep in his cold room. Look
At me now on the Newry Road
Standing beside my rucksack.
Och,
Daddy, look in your driving mirror.

Boy-Soldier

The spear-point pierces his tender neck.
His armour clatters as he hits the ground.
Blood soaks his hair, bonny as the Graces',
Braids held in place by gold and silver bands.
Think of a smallholder who rears a sapling
In a beauty spot a burn burbles through
(You can hear its music close to your home)
Milky blossoms quivering in the breeze.
A spring blizzard blows in from nowhere
And uproots it, laying its branches out.
Thus Euphorbus, the son of Pantheus,
A boy-soldier – the London Scottish, say,
The Inniskillings, the Duke of Wellington's –
Was killed and despoiled by Menelaus.

Boat

What’s the Greek for boat,
You ask, old friend,
Fellow voyager
Approaching Ithaca –
Oh, flatulent sails,
Wave-winnowing oars,
Shingle-scrunching keel –
But, so close to home,
There’s a danger always
Of amnesiac storms,
Waterlogged words.

Drei Arten Gedichte aufzuschreiben

1.
Ein trockenes Flußbett
ein weißes Band von Kieselsteinen
von weitem gesehen
hierauf wünsche ich zu schreiben
in klaren Lettern
oder eine Schutthalde
Geröll
gleitend unter meine Zeilen
wegrutschend
damit das heikle Leben meiner Worte
ihr Dennoch
ein Dennoch jedes Buchstabens sei

2.
Kleine Buchstaben
genaue
damit die Worte leise kommen
damit die Worte sich einschleichen
damit man hingehen muß
zu den Worten
sie suchen in dem weißen
Papier
leise
man merkt nicht wie sie eintreten
durch die Poren
Schweiß der nach innen rinnt
Angst
meine
unsere
und das Dennoch jedes Buchstabens

3.
Ich will einen Streifen Papier
so groß wie ich
ein Meter sechzig
darauf ein Gedicht
das schreit
sowie einer vorübergeht
schreit in schwarzen Buchstaben
das etwas Unmögliches verlangt
Zivilcourage zum Beispiel
diesen Mut den kein Tier hat
Mit-Schmerz zum Beispiel
Solidarität statt Herde
Fremd-Worte
heimisch zu machen im Tun

Mensch
Tier das Zivilcourage hat
Mensch
Tier das den Mit-Schmerz kennt
Mensch Fremdwort-Tier Wort-Tier
Tier
das Gedichte schreibt
Gedicht
das Unmögliches verlangt
von jedem der vorbeigeht
dringend
unabweisbar
als rufe es
"Trink Coca-Cola"

Uit: The Rosie Project

“I may have found a solution to the Wife Problem. As with so many scientific breakthroughs, the answer was obvious in retrospect. But had it not been for a series of unscheduled events, it is unlikely I would have discovered it.
The sequence was initiated by Gene’s insisting I give a lecture on Asperger’s syndrome that he had previously agreed to deliver himself. The timing was extremely annoying. The preparation could be time-shared with lunch consumption, but on the designated evening I had scheduled ninety-four minutes to clean my bathroom. I was faced with a choice of three options, none of them satisfactory.
1. Cleaning the bathroom after the lecture, resulting in loss of sleep with a consequent reduction in mental and physical performance.
2. Rescheduling the cleaning until the following Tuesday, resulting in an eight-day period of compromised bathroom hygiene and consequent risk of disease.
3. Refusing to deliver the lecture, resulting in damage to my friendship with Gene.
I presented the dilemma to Gene, who, as usual, had an alternative solution.
“Don, I’ll pay for someone to clean your bathroom.”
I explained to Gene—again—that all cleaners, with the possible exception of the Hungarian woman with the short skirt, made errors. Short-Skirt Woman, who had been Gene’s cleaner, had disappeared following some problem with Gene and Claudia.
“I’ll give you Eva’s mobile number. Just don’t mention me.”
“What if she asks? How can I answer without mentioning you?”
“Just say you’re contacting her because she’s the only cleaner who does it properly. And if she mentions me, say nothing.”
This was an excellent outcome, and an illustration of Gene’s ability to find solutions to social problems. Eva would enjoy having her competence recognized and might even be suitable for a permanent role, which would free up an average of 316 minutes per week in my schedule.
Gene’s lecture problem had arisen because he had an opportunity to have sex with a Chilean academic who was visiting Melbourne for a conference. Gene has a project to have sex with women of as many different nationalities as possible. As a professor of psychology, he is extremely interested in human sexual attraction, which he believes is largely genetically determined.»
