De maan is al boven de seringen

De maan is al boven de seringen;

Tintelt vol licht, dofgouden wijn,

Wanneer zal eindlijk mijn zon weer dagen,

Derde strofe

Ziet, in ons zijn vleesch geworden
uwer eeuwen roode begeerten,
aller tijden duistere tochten -
ziet, in ons zijn vleesch geworden
uwer kinderen witte droomen,
aller liefden zilveren bloei.

Onzer oogen vochte glanzen,
onzer handen blanke gebaren,
onzer koele zuivere borsten
zachtbesloten vlakke welving
dekken van uw wrang verlangen
't zalig en volbloeid geheim.

Uwer moederen blonde teêrheid,
uwer vaderen donkre goedheid
vloeiden samen tot ons wezen,
en het zoetbezwijmd gedenken
eener lang geheelde wonde
werd in ons uw felle breuk.

De onuitstamelbare wanhoop
uwer onvervulde driften
riep ons uit den grooten afgrond,
de gedaanteleêge droomen
van uw aarde-ontworstlend hunkren
hebben onzen vorm gewekt.

Onerkend, maar meer en anders
dan uw lijfelijke zonen
erven van uw eêlsten rijkdom,
mogen wij reeds nu beminnen
op een goddelijker wijze
die geen wederliefde vraagt...

Ziet, in ons zijn vleesch geworden
uwer eeuwen roode begeerten,
aller tijden duistere tochten -
ziet, in ons zijn vleesch geworden
uwer kinderen witte droomen,
aller liefden zilveren bloei.

Uit: Acts of God

"Because of the hurricane on the coast, the sitter was two hours late to the McCamey house that Saturday morning. The hurricane had not affected Madison, Georgia, but it had affected the sitter's son who had made the mistake of moving to New Orleans the year before. So the sitter had been on the phone all Saturday morning trying to placate her sister in Texas who had taken the son and his girlfriend in and was getting tired of them, especially the cats which the girlfriend had insisted on bringing to the sister's house.
Because the sitter was late, Mr. William Angus McCamey and Mrs. Amelie Louise Tucker McCamey were alone from seven on Friday night until ten forty-five on Saturday morning, after which it didn't matter anymore whether the sitter was watching out for them.
"I can't stand the bacon she buys," Amelie had begun by saying, at six that Saturday morning when she was trying to get some breakfast going on the new stove her daughter, Anne, had moved into their kitchen the week before. "It won't crisp no matter how long you cook it."
"It's the milk that gets me," Will joined in. "I'd just as soon go on and die as drink that watered-down milk she gets."
"Cream," Amelie added. "It doesn't hurt to have cream for the coffee."
"Let's make some real coffee," Will said. "I'll make it. Where's our percolator." He opened a cabinet and got out the old percolator they had bought together at Lewis Hardware forty years before and took it down and went to the sink and rinsed it out and filled it with water and found the real coffee behind the sugar and started measuring it in.”

Uit: Rücken an Rücken

Uit: The Poor Scholar

“The curse of Cromwell on it!—You might as well ax the divil for a blessin', as expect anything like a dacent crop out of it.—Look at thim two ridges!—such a poor sthring o' praties is in it!—one here an' one there—an' yit we must turn up the whole ridge for that same! Well, God sind the time soon, when the right will take place, Jimmy agra!"
"An' doesn't Pasthorini say it? Sure whin Twenty-five comes, we'll have our own agin: the right will overcome the might—the bottomless pit will be locked—ay, double: boulted, if St. Pettier gets the kays, for he's the very boy that will accommodate the heretics wid a warm corner; an' yit, faith, there's: many o' thim that myself 'ud put in a good word for, affcher all."
"Throth, an' here's the same, Jimmy. There's Jack Stuart, an' if there's a cool corner in hell, the same Jack will get it—an' that he may, I pray Gor this day, an' amin. The Lord sind it to him! for he richly desarves it. Kind, neighborly, and frindly, is he an' all belongin' to him; an' I wouldn't be where a hard word 'ud be spoken of him, nor a dog in connection wid the family ill-treated; for which reason may he get a cool corner in hell, I humbly sufflicate."
"What do you think of Jack Taylor? Will he be cosey?"
"Throth, I doubt so—a blessed youth is Jack: yit myself 'ud hardly wish it. He's a heerum-skeemm, divil-may-care fellow, no doubt of it, an' laughs at the priests, which same I'm thinkin' will get him below stairs more nor a new-milk heat, any way; but thin agin, he thrates thim dacent, an' gives thim good dinners, an' they take all this rolliken in good part, so that it's likely he's not in airnest in it, and surely they ought to know best, Jimmy."
"What do you think of Yallow Sam?—honest Sam, that they say was born widout a heart, an' carries the black wool in his ears, to keep out the cries of the widows an' the orphans, that are long rotten in their graves through his dark villany!—He'll get a snug birth!"

Klinkdigt.

Wanneer myn vinger zich eens by uw boezem stelt,

An Goethe

Wiewohl man hier Kernholz verhaut, hier leimet,

Ableierten ihr klingelndes Sonetto;

Und lächle mit, wo äffische Naturen
Mit rohem Sang’ und Klingklang’ afterchristisch,
Als Lumpenpilgrim, wallen nach Loretto.

Uit:The Blazing Worl

“Editing is the most obvious way of manipulating vision. And yet, the camera sometimes sees what you don’t - a person in the background, for example, or an object moving in the wind. I like these accidents. My first full-length film, Esperanza, was about a woman I befriended on the Lower East Side when I was a film student at NYU. Esperanza had hoarded nearly all the portable objects she had touched every day for thirty years: the Chock Full O’Nuts paper coffee cups, copies of the Daily News, magazines, gum wrappers, price tags, receipts, rubber bands, plastic bags from the 99-cent store where she did most of her shopping, piles of clothes, torn towels, and bric-a-brac she had found in the street. Esperanza’s apartment consisted of floor-to-ceiling stacks of stuff. At first sight, the crowded apartment appeared to be pure chaos, but Esperanza explained to me that her piles were not random. Her paper cups had their own corner. These crenellated towers of yellowing, disintegrating waxed cardboard stood next to piles of newspapers …
One evening, however, while I was watching the footage from a day’s filming, I found myself scrutinizing a pile of rags beside Esperanza’s mattress. I noticed that there were objects carefully tucked in among the fraying bits of coloured cloth: rows of pencils, stones, matchbooks, business cards. It was this sighting that led to the “explanation.” She was keenly aware that the world at large disapproved of her “lifestyle,” and that there was little room left for her in the apartment, but when I asked her about the objects among the rags, she said that she wanted to “keep them safe and sound.” The rags were beds for the things. “Both the beds and the ones that lay down on them,” she told me, “are nice and comfy.
It turned out that Esperanza felt for each and every thing she saved, as if the tags and town sweaters and dishes and postcards and newspapers and toys and rags were imbued with thoughts and feelings. After she saw the film, my mother said that Esperanza appeared to believe in a form of “panpsychism.” Mother said that this meant that mind is a fundamental feature of the universe and exists in everything, from stones to people. She said Spinoza subscribed to this view, and “it was a perfectly legitimate philosophical position.” Esperanza didn’t know anything about Spinoza …”

Uit: Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

"The day of the Stronghold outing was upon us. Billy was wildly excited that Daniel was coming. ‘Will Amanda be here?’
‘Who’s Amanda?’
‘The lady with the big boobies who was there last time.’
‘No!’ I said. ‘Mabel, what are you looking for?’
‘My hairbrush,’ she said darkly.
Managed somehow in the excitement to get them bathed and asleep, and scrambled to get ready before Daniel arrived.
I had opted for jeans (a brand chillingly called Not Your Daughter’s Jeans) and a cowboy shirt, thinking it would fit in with the Americana theme.
Daniel arrived late, in his usual suit, hair shorter now, still gorgeous with that irresistible smile, bearing armfuls of unsuitable gifts – toy guns, semi-naked Barbies, giant bags of sweets, Krispy Kreme doughnuts – and a suspicious-looking half-hidden DVD, which I decided to ignore as I was cataclysmically late now.
‘Ding-dong! Jones,’ he said. ‘Have you been on a diet? I thought I’d never see you looking like this again.’
It’s horrifying how differently some people treat you when you’re fat, to when you’re not. And when you’re all done up and when you’re just normal. No wonder women are so insecure. I know men are too. But when one is a woman, with all the tools at a modern woman’s disposal, one can literally look like a completely different person from one half-hour to the next."

Uit: The Czar’s Madman (Vertaald door Anselm Hollo)

“Across the table, I looked at his emaciated frame which always seemed to the about t float up into the air, at his good-natured face, his sad eyes under brows that reminded one of the tails of terriers… I was glad to be able to gaze at him and thus avoid the glances of my sister and brother-in-law: they sent such uninhibited rays of their great love across the table that it wouldn’t have been too surprising to see the silver gravy boats of the von Bock service vibrate and ring like bells. Timo did not permit Käsper or the kitchen maid to serve at table. Eeva or he himself would get up to serve or fetch things from the kitchen. Every time Timo returned to the table and walked past Eeva, he bent down and kissed the nape of her neck – or, what seemed even more improper: when Eeva passed by him, she ran her hand through his lively shock of brown hair. Quite as if neither Dr Robst nor I had been there. But love has always –“

Lars: „Was hättest du denn abgegeben?“
Lars: „Nein, jetzt sag mal ehrlich.“
Lars: „Jetzt sag mal bitte ganz ehrlich, was du abgegeben hättest!“

T.B. AN T.B.

Uit: The Last Sleep of Reason (Vertaald door Dmitri Priven)

"The blood on the clothes we found is identical to the blood on that ear fragment, so we've got ourselves a crime! It's a fact!" concluded Pogosian and beamed at captain. "You, my friend, will find the owner of the clothes and the body with a bit of its ear ripped off! We're all here for you, but you know, everybody's up to their ears in work, so you're going have to manage by yourself!"
Sinichkin started to object faintly that he had never studied how to do a proper investigation, sir, that his body was still weak after his condition, sir, but Major interrupted his inferior by saying "Looking good, you son of a bum!" and commanded to proceed with the task.
"Where's the matchbox?" asked Sinichkin as he was leaving.
"What matchbox?"
"The one the ear was in? I said I'd give it back!"
Instead of answering, the boss gave his inferior such a look that Sinichkin shuddered under his dark-eyed gaze and surprisingly quickly retreated from the office. For some reason, he was wondering why their department had so many Armenians.
"What are we, on Mount Ararat or something?" he shouted out, but he had been already outside, heading towards the quarry where the criminally implicated clothing was found.
He had no idea why he was dragging his feet to the pond, what else he would be looking for there, but he had no idea what else to do either. He kept walking along the sandy shore, listening to the gases from the rich Armenian grub rambling and rumbling in his guts, and looking down dismally the way camels do.“
