A Glossary of Chickens

There should be a word for the way
they look with just one eye, neck bent,
for beetle or worm or strewn grain.
"Gleaning," maybe, between "gizzard"
and "grit." And for the way they run
toward someone they trust, their skirts
hiked, their plump bodies wobbling:
"bobbling," let's call it, inserted
after "blowout" and before "bloom."
There should be terms, too, for things
they do not do—like urinate or chew—
but perhaps there already are.
I'd want a word for the way they drink,
head thrown back, throat wriggling,
like an old woman swallowing
a pill; a word beginning with "S,"
coming after "sex feather" and before "shank."
And one for the sweetness of hens
but not roosters. We think
that by naming we can understand,
as if the tongue were more than muscle.

Die Orangerie

2.
Schmutzig
Sagen alle Kinder
Was ist das?
Hat keinen Namen
Auf der Straße gefunden
Man darf es nicht anfassen
Was ist das?
Hat keinen Namen
Auf der Straße gefunden
Man darf es nicht anfassen
Was ist das?
Namenlos, das auf der Straße Gefundene
Eine Orange liegt unter dem Apfelbaum
Auch sie ist schmutzig
Und namenlos
Die Erde ist schmutzig
Sagen alle Kinder
Man darf sie nicht essen
Alle Kinder sind
Auf der Erde gefunden worden
Ein Fundstück, ein Findling
Schmutzig, schmutzig
Der Schmutz ist das Endprodukt
Aus dem, was war
Wurde der Schmutz
Der Schmutz auf dem Papier
Das Schmatzen der Tinte
Dieser Fleck
Größer als jedes Komma
Länger als jeder Gedankenstrich
Der schwarze Fleck verblaßt nicht
In ihm versammeln sich Ameisenbuchstaben
Immer mehr
Dicht übereinander
Die Masse
Oder das Muttermal unter dem Auge
Die Tränen zeichnend
Die nicht fließen können
Der Schmerz, der Schmutz, der feuchte Sand

Uit: Cosmology of Bing

“Sit down, he thought. Go away. Die.
Blank faces turned to see her. Then, as if on cue, the very same faces returned to Bing, who was rubbing his chin. Chewing absently on the cap of his pen, a boy sitting in the front row smirked and shook his head. Bing liked that kid.
"There was a question somewhere in there, I think."
"Yes."
"Seems you want to know if I believe extraterrestrials visit the earth?"
She nodded.
"Something like that, yeah."
"But you already know they do. I'll just take your word for it."
He glanced at the boy in the front row, giving him a wink.
"Well, I guess I was wondering if you feel our government has been lying to us about—"
He knew her. He had known her for years and years. Sometimes she was male, sometimes black, sometimes Latino or Asian, more often than not she was female and white and young. And she had to be heard. He had never taught a class in which she didn't exist. And when her peers grew tired of her rambling—her inane questions and comments—she would still fail to sense the complete meaninglessness of her own words and thoughts. White-girl disease, he called it. How she talked talked talked, blathering with authority. He hated her with every inch of his flesh.
"Hitler's mother," Bing said, interrupting her.
That got their attention.”

Uit: Raiders of the Nile

« On this day the tomb was closed to visitors. An iron gate barred entry to the vestibule. I was among those who carried the battering ram. We pivoted into formation, perpendicular to the gate. As Artemon, our leader, counted to three, we heaved the ram forward, then back, then forward again with all our might. The gate shuddered and buckled at the impact.
“Again!” shouted Artemon. “On my count! One—two—three!”
Each time the ram butted against it, the gate moaned and shrieked, as if it were a living thing. On our fourth heave, the gate flew open. Those of us carrying the battering ram retreated back into the street and tossed it aside while the vanguard of our party, led by Artemon, rushed through the sundered gate.
I drew my sword and followed them into the vestibule. Dazzling mosaics celebrating the life of Alexander decorated every surface from the floor to the domed ceiling high above, where an opening admitted sunlight to shimmer across the millions of pieces of colored glass and stone.
Ahead of me, I saw that only a handful of armed men offered resistance. These guardians of the tomb looked surprised, frightened, and ready to run—and who could blame them? We greatly outnumbered them. They also looked rather old to be bearing arms, with weathered, wrinkled faces and gray eyebrows.
Why were there so few guards, and why were they of such a low grade? Artemon had told us that the city was in chaos, wracked by daily riots. All the most able-bodied soldiers had been summoned by King Ptolemy to protect the royal palace, leaving only this feeble handful to defend the Tomb of Alexander.“

My home is in my heart (Fragment)

They come
and ask where is your home
they come with papers
and say
this belongs to nobody
this is government land
everything belongs to the State
They bring out dingy fat books
and say
this is the law
it applies to you too

What shall I say sister
what shall I say brother

You know brother
you understand sister

But when they ask where is your home
do you answer them all this
On Skuolfedievva we pitched our lavvo
during the spring migration
Cappavuopmi is where we built our goahti during rut
Our summer camp is at Ittunjarga
and during the winter our reindeer are in Dalvadas

You know it sister
you understand brother

Sunset Clouds

Low clouds, the lightning veins and cleaves,
Torn from the forest of the storm,
Sweep westward like enormous leaves
O'er field and farm.

And in the west, on burning skies,
Their wrath is quenched, their hate is hushed,
And deep their drifted thunder lies
With splendor flushed.

The black turns gray, the gray turns gold;
And, seaed in deeps of radiant rose,
Summits of fire, manifold
They now repose.

What dreams they bring! what thoughts reveal!
That have their source in loveliness,
Through which the doubts I often feel
Grow less and less.

Through which I see that other night,
That cloud called Death, transformed of Love
To flame, and pointing with its light
To life above.

A Wasted Illness

Through vaults of pain,
Enribbed and wrought with groins of ghastliness,
I passed, and garish spectres moved my brain
To dire distress.

And hammerings,
And quakes, and shoots, and stifling hotness, blent
With webby waxing things and waning things
As on I went.

"Where lies the end
To this foul way?" I asked with weakening breath.
Thereon ahead I saw a door extend -
The door to death.

It loomed more clear:
"At last!" I cried. "The all-delivering door!"
And then, I knew not how, it grew less near
Than theretofore.

And back slid I
Along the galleries by which I came,
And tediously the day returned, and sky,
And life—the same.

And all was well:
Old circumstance resumed its former show,
And on my head the dews of comfort fell
As ere my woe.

I roam anew,
Scarce conscious of my late distress . . . And yet
Those backward steps through pain I cannot view
Without regret.

For that dire train
Of waxing shapes and waning, passed before,
And those grim aisles, must be traversed again
To reach that door.

Sterrenstelsels

Ja, daarginds staat Orion,
de drie knoopjes van de riem
helder op een rij boven de horizon.

En als je je omdraait kan je
Gemini zien, heel lichtgeraakt vannacht,
de tweelingen kijken weer eens van ons weg, de ruimte in.

Dat groepje, wat hoger in de lucht,
is Cassiopeia, zittend in haar astrale stoel
als ik me niet vergis.

En recht boven ons,
is dat niet Virginia Woolf
die de Ouse afzakt

in haar opblaasbare kano?
Kijk, de breedgerande hoed en daar,
de omtrek van de peddel, geheven, druipend van sterren.

Am fünften Sonntage in der Fasten
Ev.: Die Juden wollen Jesum steinigen.

Die Propheten sind begraben!
Abraham ist tot!
Millionen, Greis' und Knaben,
Und der Mägdlein rot,
Viele, die mir Liebe gaben,
Denen ich sie bot,
Alle, alle sind begraben!
Alle sind sie tot!

Herr, du hast es mir verkündet,
Und dein Wort steht fest,
Daß nur der das Leben findet,
Der das Leben läßt.
Ach, in meiner Seele windet
Es sich dumpf gepreßt;
Doch, du hast es mir verkündet,
Und dein Wort steht fest!

Aber von mir selbst bereitet,
Leb' ich oft der Pein,
Alles scheint mir wohl geleitet,
Und der Mensch allein,
Der dein Ebenbild bedeutet,
Jammervoll zu sein:
Sieh, so hab' ich mir bereitet
Namenlose Pein.

Hab' ich grausend es empfunden,
Wie in der Natur
An ein Fäserchen gebunden,
Eine Nerve nur,
Oft dein Ebenbild verschwunden
Auf die letzte Spur:
Hab' ich keinen Geist gefunden,
Einen Körper nur!

Seh ich dann zu Staub zerfallen,
Was so warm gelebt,
Ohne daß die Muskeln wallen,
Eine Nerve bebt,
Da die Seele doch an allen
Innig fest geklebt,
Möcht' ich selbst zu Staub zerfallen,
Daß ich nie gelebt!

Schrecklich über alles Denken
Ist die dumpfe Nacht,
Drin sich kann ein Geist versenken,
Der allein gedacht,
Der sich nicht von dir ließ lenken,
Helle Glaubensmacht!
Ach, was mag der Finstre denken
Als die finstre Nacht!

Meine Lieder werden leben,
Wenn ich längst entschwand,
Mancher wird vor ihnen beben,
Der gleich mir empfand.
Ob ein andrer sie gegeben,
Oder meine Hand!
Sieh, die Lieder durften leben,
Aber ich entschwand!

Bruder mein, so laß uns sehen
Fest auf Gottes Wort,
Die Verwirrung wird vergehen,
Dies lebt ewig fort!
Weißt du wie sie mag entstehen
Im Gehirne dort?
Ob wir einst nicht lächelnd sehen
Der Verstörung Wort,

Wie es hing an einem Faden,
Der zu hart gespannt,
Mit entflammten Blut beladen
Sich der Stirn entwand?
Flehen wir zu Gottes Gnaden!
Flehn zu seiner Hand,
Die die Fädchen und die Faden
Liebreich ausgespannt.
