Vooral leeuwestront is erg.

Freundin! - sprach Columbus - traue
keinem Genueser mehr!
Immer starrt er in das Blaue -
Fernstes lockt ihn allzusehr!

Fremdestes ist nun mir teuer!
Genua, das sank, das schwand -
Herz, bleib kalt! Hand, halt das Steuer!
Vor mir Meer - und Land? - und Land? ---

Stehen fest wir auf den Füßen!
Nimmer können wir zurück!
Schaun hinaus: von fernher grüßen
Uns Ein Tod, Ein Ruhm, Ein Glück!

Im Süden

So häng ich denn auf krummem Aste
und schaukle meine Müdigkeit.
Ein Vogel lud mich her zu Gaste,
ein Vogelnest ist’s, drin ich raste.
Wo bin ich doch? Ach, weit! Ach weit!

Vernunft?

So jung, so falsch, so umgetrieben
scheint ganz ihr mir gemacht zum Lieben
und jedem schönen Zeitvertreib!
Im Norden - ich gesteh’s mit Zaudern -
liebt ich ein Weibchen, alt zum Schaudern:
"die Wahrheit" hieß dies alte Weib ..

Gratitude

For all, for all! I thank you, o my dear:
For passions' deeply hidden pledge,
For poison of a kiss, and stinging of a tear,
Abuse by friends, and enemies' revenge;
For soul's light, extinguished in a prison,
For things by which I was deceived before.
But do not give me any real reason
To give you thanks from now any more.

He Has Been Born...
1832

He has been born for hopes and for joys,
For inspirations peaceful! -- But, a crazy,
He early left the world of fairy tales and toys
And threw his heart in a sea of high life, hazy.
God did not saved him from the world at once!
Thus a ripe fruit, which early had matured, --
Midst flowers it hangs, an orphan poor,
And does not satisfy nor any test, nor eyes;
The time of their bloom is one when he dies!

A greedy worm is gnawing him through,
And while the girlfriends, so sweet and gentle,
Are swaying on a branch -- the early fruit
Just pulls the own one -- until the winter enters!
It's awful to be old, without a grayish tingle:
He does not find the peers; in a crowd,
He goes, leaving locked his soul proud --
Just not a slave nor a king, with other people mingled, --
And all that he there feels, he ever feels a single!

Uit: Invisible Cities (Vertaald door William Weaver)

“Andria was built so artfully that its every street follows a planet's orbit, and the buildings and the places of community life repeat the order of the constellations and the position of the most luminous stars:   Antares, Alpheratz, Capricorn, the Cepheids.   The city's calendar is so regulated that jobs and offices and ceremonies are arranged in a map corresponding to the firmament on that date: and thus the days on earth and the nights in the sky reflect each other.
Though it is painstakingly regimented, the city's life flows calmly like the motion of the celestial bodies and it acquires the inevitability of phenomena not subject to human caprice.   In praising Andria's citizens for their productive industry and their spiritual ease, I was led to say: I can well understand how you, feeling yourselves part of an unchanging heaven, cogs in a meticulous clockwork, take care not to make the slightest change in your city and your habits.   Andria is the only city I know where it is best to remain motionless in time.
They looked at one another dumbfounded.   "But why?   Whoever said such a thing?"   And they led me to visit a suspended street recently opened over a bamboo grove, a shadow-theater under construction in the place of the municipal kennels, now moved to the pavilions of the former lazaretto, abolished when the last plague victims were cured, and--just inaugurated--a river port, a statue of Thales, a toboggan slide. »

UitA Brief History of Seven Killings

““Listen.
Dead people never stop talking. Maybe because death is not death at all, just a detention after school. You know where you’re coming from and you’re always returning from it. You know where you’re going though you never seem to get there and you’re just dead. Dead. It sounds final but it’s a word missing an ing. You come across men longer dead than you, walking all the time though heading nowhere and you listen to them howl and hiss because we’re all spirits or we think we are all spirits but we’re all just dead. Spirits that slip inside other spirits. Sometimes a woman slips inside a man and wails like the memory of making love. They moan and keen loud but it comes through the window like a whistle or a whisper under the bed, and little children think there’s a monster. The dead love lying under the living for three reasons. (1) We’re lying most of the time. (2) Under the bed looks like the top of a coffin, but (3) There is weight, human weight on top that you can slip into and make heavier, and you listen to the heart beat while you watch it pump and hear the nostrils hiss when their lungs press air and envy even the shortest breath. I have no memory of coffins.
But the dead never stop talking and sometimes the living hear. This is what I wanted to say. When you’re dead speech is nothing but tangents and detours and there’s nothing to do but stray and wander awhile. Well, that’s at least what the others do. My point being that the expired learn from the expired, but that’s tricky. I could listen to myself, still claiming to anybody that would hear that I didn’t fall, I was pushed over the balcony at the Sunset Beach Hotel in Montego Bay. And I can’t say shut your trap, Artie Jennings, because every morning I wake up having to put my pumpkin-smashed head back together. And even as I talk now I can hear how I sounded then, can you dig it, dingledoodies? meaning that the afterlife is just not a happening scene, not a groovy shindig, Daddy-O, see those cool cats on the mat? They could never dig it, and there’s nothing to do but wait for the man that killed me, but he won’t die, he only gets older and older and trades out wives for younger and younger and breeding a whole brood of slow-witted boys and running the country down into the ground.”

Humanity I Love You

Humanity i love you
because you would rather black the boots of
success than enquire whose soul dangles from his
watch-chain which would be embarrassing for both

parties and because you
unflinchingly applaud all
songs containing the words country home and
mother when sung at the old howard

Humanity i love you because
when you’re hard up you pawn your
intelligence to buy a drink and when
you’re flush pride keeps

you from the pawn shop and
because you are continually committing
nuisances but more
especially in your own house

Humanity i love you because you
are perpetually putting the secret of
life in your pants and forgetting
it’s there and sitting down

on it
and because you are
forever making poems in the lap
of death Humanity

i hate you

I Will Wade Out

i will wade out
till my thighs are steeped in burning flowers
I will take the sun in my mouth
and leap into the ripe air
                                       Alive
                                                 with closed eyes
to dash against darkness
in the sleeping curves of my body
Shall enter fingers of smooth mastery
with chasteness of sea-girls
                                            Will i complete the mystery
                                            of my flesh
I will rise
               After a thousand years
lipping
flowers
And set my teeth in the silver of the moon

A Connotation Of Infinity

a connotation of infinity
sharpens the temporal splendor of this night

when souls which have forgot frivolity
in lowliness,noting the fatal flight
of worlds whereto this earth’s a hurled dream

down eager avenues of lifelessness

consider for how much themselves shall gleam,
in the poised radiance of perpetualness.
When what’s in velvet beyond doomed thought

is like a woman amorous to be known;
and man, whose here is alway worse than naught,
feels the tremendous yonder for his own—

on such a night the sea through her blind miles

of crumbling silence seriously smiles

Brandende longen, schreeuwvogels

Visioenen opgegraven.

Ruis

Zij is zo bloedstollend
dichtbij
dat zijn longen knerpen als verse,
ingetrapte sneeuw.

In de kamer bepalen ze telkens weer
de stand van hun lijven.
Ze staan en beluisteren.

De ruis is die van een

schelp, een foetus.

Tijdens het zwart spelen ze schaak
met de lijven,
rekenen in de ruis
op iets anders dan zichzelf.
