Dolce far niente

Na de regen door German Tatarinov, 1991

Regen in der Dämmerung

Der wandernde Wind auf den Wegen
War angefüllt mit süßem Laut,
Der dämmernde rieselnde Regen
War mit Verlangen feucht betaut.

Das rinnende rauschende Wasser
Berauschte verwirrend die Stimmen
Der Träume, die blasser und blasser
Im schwebenden Nebel verschwimmen.

Der Wind in den wehenden Weiden,
Am Wasser der wandernde Wind,
Berauschte die sehnenden Leiden,
Die in der Dämmerung sind.

Der Weg im dämmernden Wehen,
Er führte zu keinem Ziel,
Doch war er gut zu gehen
Im Regend, der rieselnd fiel.

Uit:The Hanging Girl (Vertaald door William Frost)

“Tuesday, April 29th, 2014
“Hey, Carl. Wake up. The telephone is ringing again.”
Carl looked up sleepily at Assad, who was camouflaged like a yellow carnival. When he’d started in the morning, the overalls had been white and his curly hair black, so if there was even a splash of paint on the walls, it would be a miracle.
“You interrupted me right in the middle of a complicated train of thought,” said Carl, reluctantly taking his legs off the table.
“Okay! Sorry!” The wrinkles of a smile appeared under the jungle of Assad’s nine o’clock stubble. What the heck was it his happy round eyes expressed? A hint of irony, perhaps?
“Yeah, I know it was a late one for you yesterday, Carl,” continued Assad. “But Rose goes nuts when you let the telephone ring all the time. So could you please just get it next time?”
Carl turned toward a glaring light from the basement window. A little cigarette smoke should put an end to that problem, he thought, reaching out for the pack and slamming his feet back up on the table as the telephone started ringing again.
Assad pointed at it insistently and slid out the door. It was turning into a hell of a situation with those two loudmouths jabbering at him incessantly.
“Carl,” he said, yawning, with the receiver resting on the table.
“Hello!” came from below.
He took the receiver up to his mouth with his arm languid. “Who am I talking with?”
“Is that Carl Mørck?” said a voice in the lilting dialect of Bornholm."

Uit: The Cross Of Redemption

“Just so, indeed, is the heedless State over¬thrown by men, who, in order to overthrow it, have had to achieve a desperate single- mindedness. And this single- mindedness, which we think of (why?) as ennobling, also operates, and much more surely, to distort and diminish a man — to distort and diminish us all, even, or perhaps especially, those whose needs and whose energy made the overthrow of the State inevitable, necessary, and just.
And the terrible thing about this play, for me — it is not necessarily my favorite play, whatever that means, but it is the play which I first, so to speak, discovered — is the tension it relentlessly sustains between individual ambition, self- conscious, deluded, idealistic, or corrupt, and the blind, mindless passion which drives the individual no less than it drives the mob. "I am Cinna the poet, I am Cinna the poet...I am not Cinna the conspirator" — that cry rings in my ears. And the mob's response: "Tear him for his bad verses!" And yet — though one howled with Cinna and felt his terrible rise, at the hands of his countrymen, to death, it was impossible to hate the mob. Or, worse than impossible, useless; for here we were, at once howl¬ing and being torn to pieces, the only receptacles of evil and the only receptacles of nobility to be found in all the universe. But the play does not even suggest that we have the perception to know evil from good or that such a distinction can ever be clear: "The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones . . ."
Once one has begun to suspect this much about the world — once one has begun to suspect, that is, that one is not, and never will be, innocent, for the reason that no one is — some of the self- protective veils between oneself and reality begin to fall away. It is probably of some significance, though we cannot pursue it here, that my first real apprehension of Shakespeare came when I was living in France, and thinking and speaking in French. The necessity of mastering a foreign language forced me into a new relationship to my own. (It was also in France, therefore, that I began to read the Bible again.)“

April Love

We have walked in Love's land a little way,
We have learnt his lesson a little while,
And shall we not part at the end of day,
With a sigh, a smile?

A little while in the shine of the sun,
We were twined together, joined lips forgot
How the shadows fall when day is done,
And when Love is not.

We have made no vows - there will none be broke,
Our love was free as the wind on the hill,
There was no word said we need wish unspoke,
We have wrought no ill.

So shall we not part at the end of day,
Who have loved and lingered a little while,
Join lips for the last time, go our way,
With a sigh, a smile.

Two pair of lovers and an old woman had de kunstenaar zijn tafereel genoemd.
In een lucide moment identificeer ik “the old woman”’.

Uit: Butterfly Man (Vertaald door Tiina Randviir)

“Irmgiird turned out to be a huge woman, possibly more than three metres tall. Her thick red hair was tied back in a ponytail and her smile revealed a row of sharp white teeth. “Irmgiird, lion tamer,” she introduced herself in a low purring voice and held out a scratched hand. “Glad to meet you – I’m Anselm – mediocre conjurer and I suppose you could now call me butterfly man too,” muttered Anselm staring foolishly at his feet. Smiling, Irmgiird took him by the arm and the odd couple went to explore backstage.
Anselm saw a really weird selection of people there, it was rather like wandering into some kind of strange dream world. He saw a man with a transparent body surrounded by gorgeous women with non-transparent bodies who seemed to form his harem; he saw an old wrinkled woman with a long white horn growing out of her forehead and whose sweet breath reminded Anselm of a long-forgotten world. Two children with wings for arms were floating near the ceiling and their flight resembled that of bats. There was also a troupe of acrobats practising various routines who were distinctive in that their skin was covered in fish-scales. Countless attendants were bustling around everywhere, ready to satisfy the “artistes’” every whim.
Anselm felt distinctly uneasy as he moved through this company and it grew harder for him to work out if this was just a collection of freaks from different parts of the world or if these were rare and wonderful creatures whose ranks he now had the honour of joining. When Irmgiird asked him what he thought of his new colleagues, he shrugged shyly and replied: “ Maybe I would be better off as a mediocre conjurer somewhere else – it’s rather intimidating here.”
This comment really made Irmgiird fly off the handle, she grabbed Anselm by the collar and clasped him between her magnificent breasts. “You’re just a stupid little shithead to talk like that,” she rasped viciously, “do you think I’m some kind of monster too? Maybe I should be ashamed of my might and beauty, is that it?” For the duration of this tirade Anselm was forced to look into her dark green eyes and breathe in the heady smell of musk emanating from between her breasts, suddenly a huge cloud of emperor butterflies burst forth from him, a sign of supreme ecstasy.”

The Himalayas

Recollection is short, fantasy long!
A place where I'd never been born,
must never be born—
the Himalayas.

On whose behalf
did I go there?
I went with all ten fingers trembling.

With so many kinds of foolishness left back home,
I gazed up toward a few peaks
brilliant at eight thousand meters, their golden blades piled high.
Before that, and after,
I could not help but be an orphan.

I had but one hope:
to stay as far from the Himalayas as humanly possible,
and from the world of troublesome questions.
Yes, that was it.

Maternal Grandfather

Ch'oi Hong-kwan, our maternal grandfather,
was so tall his high hat would reach the eaves,
scraping the sparrows' nests under the roof.
He was always laughing.
If our grandmother offered a beggar a bite to eat,
he was always the first to be glad.
If our grandmother ever spoke sharply to him,
he'd laugh, paying no attention to what she said.
Once, when I was small, he told me:
‘Look, if you sweep the yard well
the yard will laugh.
If the yard laughs,
the fence will laugh.
Even the morning-glories
blossoming on the fence will laugh.'

Tuintje

We tutten ons tuintje op
en kammen het gras,
make-uppen de randjes
langs het terras:
overal plantjes met lippenstiftkleuren,
overal bloemen met bloemetjesgeuren.
Daarna het heggenhaar
weg met de heggenschaar –
zo wordt ons tuintje een prachtig gezicht
dat plat naar de zomer
te glimlachen ligt.

Vlekje

Ik heb een vlekje op mijn been,
dat eruitziet
als een roosje.
Ik kreeg het van mijn moeder,
denk ik,
uit een moedervlekkendoosje.
Is het een stiekem bloemetje
dat ik alleen maar ken?
(En mama dus misschien?)
Of is het een bewijsje
dat ik
een lentemeisje ben?
(Wil je het even zien?)
