Uit: Nooit meer slapen

“Deprimerend, waarom?

“An early proponent of thispurposelessness was Friedrich Nietzsche, some nine years younger than Twain, who wrote about intel-ligent animals, on a planet in a remote corner of countless solar systems’ ickering grains of sand, which must die out when nature takes a shallow breath and freezes their planet:
“One might invent such a fable and still not have illustrated sufficiently how wretched, how shadowy and tran-sient, how aimless and arbitrary, thehuman intellect appears in nature…Could we but communicate with themoth, then we would understand that  it, too, flies through the air with this pathos and feels the flying center of  the world within itself.”
Prompted by poor health and the medicinal imper-atives of his time, the philosopher with the walrusmoustache was a frequent guest at the Sils-Mariahealth resort in the Swiss Alps, which neither thennor since have ceased to grow under visiting feet: asmuch as two millimeters for every non-metaphoricalcalendar year, mainly at Chur in the GraubündenCanton as Adria grinds its way into the lithosphereand buries itself in the bed of the Tethys Sea.Twenty to thirty million years ago in real timeand approximately two days in the metaphoricaldownscaling, the plates of Adria and Europe converged and the lower crust of the former was forcedso deeply into the latter that it split. The dislodged lower crust grew heavier as a result of metamorphic conversion and continued to sink.
At the same time, a roughly 0.7 cubic kilometer large massif of Adria’s crystalline base broke off, but rather than follow suit into the hot abyss under Europe, it traveledupwards through layers of limestone and can today be found close to the Earth’s surface encased inthe 2,314-meter-high Mount Silberen, thirty-sevenkilometers west-northwest of Chur.“

Of beide samen?

Trans-Siberian Prose and Little Jeanne from France (Fragment)

I was very happy carefree
I made believe we were robbers
We had stolen the treasure of Gloconde
And were going, thanks to the Trans-Siberian, to hide it on the other side of the world
I had to defend it against bandits from Ural who had attacked Jules Vern's traveling acrobats
Against the Khoungouzes, the Chinese boxers
And the Great Lama's enraged little Mongols
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
And those faithful to the terrible Old Man of the Mountain
And especially, against the most modern of all
The hotel rats
And all the specialists from international express trains everywhere.

And yet, and yet,
I was as sad as a child
The rhythms of the train
The “railway marrow” of American psychiatrists
The noise of the doors the voices the axles screeching on the frozen rails
The golden railing of my future
My browning the piano and the cursing of the card players in the next-door compartment
The splendid presence of Jeanne
The man in the blue glasses who nervously paced the hallway and who would look at me as he passed by
Rustling of women
And whistling of steam
And the eternal sound of wheels whirling in madness in the furrows of the sky

Uit: Tarzan of the Apes

“It was on the morning of the second day that the first link was forged in what was destined to form a chain of circumstances ending in a life for one then unborn such as has never been paralleled in the history of man.
Two sailors were washing down the decks of the Fuwalda, the first mate was on duty, and the captain had stopped to speak with John Clayton and Lady Alice.
The men were working backwards toward the little party who were facing away from the sailors. Closer and closer they came, until one of them was directly behind the captain. In another moment he would have passed by and this strange narrative would never have been recorded.
But just that instant the officer turned to leave Lord and Lady Greystoke, and, as he did so, tripped against the sailor and sprawled headlong upon the deck, overturning the water-pail so that he was drenched in its dirty contents.
For an instant the scene was ludicrous; but only for an instant. With a volley of awful oaths, his face suffused with the scarlet of mortification and rage, the captain regained his feet, and with a terrific blow felled the sailor to the deck.
The man was small and rather old, so that the brutality of the act was thus accentuated. The other seaman, however, was neither old nor small—a huge bear of a man, with fierce black mustachios, and a great bull neck set between massive shoulders.
As he saw his mate go down he crouched, and, with a low snarl, sprang upon the captain crushing him to his knees with a single mighty blow.
From scarlet the officer’s face went white, for this was mutiny; and mutiny he had met and subdued before in his brutal career. Without waiting to rise he whipped a revolver from his pocket, firing point blank at the great mountain of muscle towering before him; but, quick as he was, John Clayton was almost as quick, so that the bullet which was intended for the sailor’s heart lodged in the sailor’s leg instead, for Lord Greystoke had struck down the captain’s arm as he had seen the weapon flash in the sun.”

Uit: Katchikali

The weaver-birds are nesting
shh! the weaver-birds are
happy the long day through

says one to another
twit-twit. I have two eggs
all shiny and white

shh says the other;
I’m equally bright.
Look into the water
and I’m standing on my head.

the weaver-birds are nesting
all yellow and black
like candles in low evening
festooning the river shrubs.

Be quiet snores the Hippo
one watery eye awake.
I cannot hear my dinner snap;
submerged, the crocodile complains.

but the weaver-birds are nesting
and so the world must wait.
They sing from dawn till evening
and next morning, they’re the first to wake.

‘'k Heb niks geheurd, grootvoader,’ is Geurtjes antwoord.

sich Rosendüfte her - wo längs der Hecken
der schlaffe Wind entschlief in roten Matten
und geisternd strahlen zwischen Laubverstecken
die Götterbilder über laue Schatten.
Die Efeulauben flimmern. Schwäne wiegen
und spiegeln sich in grundlos grünen Weihern
und große fremde Sonnenfalter fliegen
traumhaft und schillernd zwischen Düfteschleiern.

Uit: Hello Out There

“I myself, as a person, have been influenced by many writers and many things, and my writing has felt the impact of the writing of many writers, some relatively unknown and unimportant, some downright bad. But probably the greatest influence of them all when an influence is most effective — when the man being influenced is nowhere near being solid in his own right — has been the influence of the great tall man with the white beard, the lively eyes, the swift wit and the impish chuckle.”
(…)

“When, at the age of eighteen, I was the manager of the Postal Telegraph office at 21 Taylor Street in San Francisco, I remember having been asked by the clerk there, a man named Clifford, who the hell I thought I was. And I remember replying very simply and earnestly somewhat as follows: If you have ever heard of George Bernard Shaw, if you have ever read his plays or prefaces, you will know what I mean when I tell you that I am that man by another name.
Who is he? I remember the clerk asking.
George Bernard Shaw, I replied, is the tonic of the Christian peoples of the world. He is health, wisdom, and comedy, and that's what I am too.
How do you figure? The clerk said.
Don't bother me, I said. I'm the night manager of this office and when I tell you something it's final.”

Uit: The Enchanted April

“Looking out of the club window into Shaftesbury Avenue--hers was an economical club, but convenient for Hampstead, where she lived, and for Shoolbred's, where she shopped--Mrs. Wilkins, having stood there some time very drearily, her mind's eye on the Mediterranean in April, and the wisteria, and the enviable opportunities of the rich, while her bodily eye watched the really extremely horrible sooty rain falling steadily on the hurrying umbrellas and splashing omnibuses, suddenly wondered whether perhaps this was not the rainy day Mellersh--Mellersh was Mr. Wilkins--had so often encouraged her to prepare for, and whether to get out of such a climate and into the small mediaeval castle wasn't perhaps what Providence had all along intended her to do with her savings. Part of her savings, of course; perhaps quite a small part. The castle, being mediaeval, might also be dilapidated, and dilapidations were surely cheap. She wouldn't in the least mind a few of them, because you didn't pay for dilapidations which were already there, on the contrary--by reducing the price you had to pay they really paid you. But what nonsense to think of it . . .
She turned away from the window with the same gesture of mingled irritation and resignation with which she had laid down The Times, and crossed the room towards the door with the intention of getting her mackintosh and umbrella and fighting her way into one of the overcrowded omnibuses and going to Shoolbred's on her way home and buying some soles for Mellersh's dinner--Mellersh was difficult with fish and liked only soles, except salmon--when she beheld Mrs. Arbuthnot, a woman she knew by sight as also living in Hampstead and belonging to the club, sitting at the table in the middle of the room on which the newspapers and magazines were kept, absorbed, in her turn, in the first page of The Times.
Mrs. Wilkins had never yet spoken to Mrs. Arbuthnot, who belonged to one of the various church sets, and who analysed, classified, divided and registered the poor; whereas she and Mellersh, when they did go out, went to the parties of impressionist painters, of whom in Hampstead there were many. Mellersh had a sister who had married one of them and lived up on the Heath, and because of this alliance Mrs. Wilkins was drawn into a circle which was highly unnatural to her, and she had learned to dread pictures. She had to say things about them, and she didn't know what to say. She used to murmur, "marvelous," and feel that it was not enough. But nobody minded. Nobody listened. Nobody took any notice of Mrs. Wilkins. She was the kind of person who is not noticed at parties. Her clothes, infested by thrift, made her practically invisible; her face was non-arresting; her conversation was reluctant; she was shy. And if one's clothes and face and conversation are all negligible, thought Mrs. Wilkins, who recognized her disabilities, what, at parties, is there left of one?”

Consolation

Dédaigne de gravir ton oeuvre jusqu'au faîte ;

Sort de terre, fleurit et devient arbrisseau ;

Sur les débris du pot brandir ses verts poignards ;
Il la veut arracher, mais la tige est tenace ;

Ainsi germa l'amour dans mon âme surprise ;

Uit: Guest Interview: Melanie Huber Speaks With New York Quarterly Editor Raymond Hammond

« 1. What made you first decide to venture out into the poetry book publishing game?
Our founding editor, William Packard, had always spoken of an NYQ Books and his wish to make that happen. Shortly after his death we found several proposals that he had written over the years and we knew books were in the original charter, so it was always something in the back of my mind as well.  With the onset of one off printing and the subsequent increased quality of that industry, it became viable to begin thinking about setting up an imprint. We bounced around several ideas for a couple of years and then when the 40th anniversary came around in 2009, it seemed like the perfect time to do something like this and a fitting gesture to both the magazine as well as Bill.  So beginning in the first weeks of January of 2009 I set about releasing the older ideas we had bounced around and just made the decision to go full steam ahead with a non-profit model.  Just to do it.  By June of 2009 we released our first book.
I would like to add that in addition to the nostalgic value, I think having a press is important because it allows you to provide another venue to the poets, and to publish more work of those poets than we ever could in a hundred issues of the magazine.  There has always been at times those submission packages where you read it and want to publish the entire packet, and everything else you can get your hands on by that person.  Now we can do that.“
