Roter Mohn

Wenn im Sommer der rote Mohn
wieder glüht im gelben Korn,
wenn des Finken süßer Ton
wieder lockt im Hagedorn,
wenn es wieder weit und breit
feierklar und fruchtstill ist,
dann erfüllt sich uns die Zeit,
die mit vollen Massen misst.

Dann verebbt, was uns bedroht,
dann verweht, was uns bedrückt,
über dem Schlangenkopf der Not
ist das Sonnenschwert gezückt.
Glaube nur, es wird geschehn!
Wende nicht den Blick zurück!
Wenn die Sommerwinde wehn,
werden wir in Rosen gehn,
und die Sonne lacht uns Glück!

Geef het maar toe. Wat je schrijft
heeft geen zin. Gevoelig gezwatel,
een meisje dat zingt. Hou toch op,

stomp jezelf in je rug. Wees oprecht
tegen lezers. Liever dan dikke woorden
een kille inspectie. Kijk, deze foto:

leeg strand bij avond. Jonge vrouw,
achterkant.

bleek licht rond haar lichaam. Stil.

Gewitterabend

Es dämmert und dämmert den See herab,
Die Wasser sind gar so dunkel;

In ihren Krautgarten sende.

Rings spannen sich feurige Ketten;
Der blöde Haufen ergreift die Flucht,
Sie verkriechen sich in die Betten.

Wenn Gott einen guten Gedanken hat,
Dann raunt man: es wetterleuchtet!
Pass’ auf, Gesindel, dass nicht einmal
Er in die Wirtschaft dir leuchtet!

Sommernacht

Und wie ein Meer dehnt es sich aus;
Doch liegt auf seinem stillen Grunde
Nicht Seegewürm noch andrer Graus;
Da träumen Blumen nur von Kränzen
Und trinken der Gestirne Schein,
O goldnes Meer, dein friedlich Glänzen
Saugt meine Seele gierig ein!

In meiner Heimat grünen Talen,
Da herrscht ein alter schöner Brauch:
Wann hell die Sommersterne strahlen,
Der Glühwurm schimmert durch den Strauch,
Dann geht ein Flüstern und ein Winken,
Das sich dem Ährenfelde naht,
Da geht ein nächtlich Silberblinken
Von Sicheln durch die goldne Saat.

Das sind die Bursche jung und wacker,
Die sammeln sich im Feld zuhauf
Und suchen den gereiften Acker
Der Witwe oder Waise auf,
Die keines Vaters, keiner Brüder
Und keines Knechtes Hilfe weiss -
Ihr schneiden sie den Segen nieder,
Die reinste Lust ziert ihren Fleiss.

Schon sind die Garben festgebunden
Und rasch in einen Ring gebracht;
Wie lieblich flohn die kurzen Stunden,
Es war ein Spiel in kühler Nacht!
Nun wird geschwärmt und hell gesungen
Im Garbenkreis, bis Morgenluft
Die nimmermüden braunen Jungen
Zur eignen schweren Arbeit ruft.

Night Shift

Gradually, as the sun goes down,
the night staff clock in for duty.
Punctually the sister too, formally attired
in her uniform, wearing red epaulettes –
emblem of her authority – signs herself in
for the night shift. She smiles;
it’s what’s expected of senior personnel.

Peeks into the private ward. All going well?
she asks, endearingly unconcerned. I’m sorry,
but the nightcap will have to wait for now,
we’re detoxing you. Ticks off an item.

Shortly thereafter, pushing a trolley,
she brings medication, records the status
of the drip, maternally gesturing: Swallow it
now, you oaf; down the passage there are eight
or so more awaiting my ministrations –

and so on the night sea her patients drift away,
each in turn chemically anaesthetized
and intravenously cleansed of – snugly
taken care of for six hours at least.

Until the outside morning light licks at
the dawn’s grey membrane,
waking those asleep to feel once more
the throbbing of their wounds and be aware

of the most dreadful of horrors
waiting out there.

The saint

He stared deep
deep
into the well
its depth
had no end
in this life

the flesh peeled off
and fell bit by bit
soon nothing would remain
but his skeleton

I’ve decided - he said -
I’ve finally decided
I’ll live among the drowned
and among the lepers

Vertaald door David Connoly

The Difficult Sunday

Since morning I've gazed up at a better bird
since morning I've enjoyed the snake coiled at my neck

Broken cups on the carpets
crimson flowers the fortune-teller's cheeks
when she lifts the skirts of fate
something will sprout from this joy
a new blossomless tree
a pure new eyelid
or a worshipped word
that won't have kissed forgetting on the mouth

Outside the bells clang
outside unimaginable friends are waiting for me
they've hoisted a dawn high and wave it around
such fatigue such fatigue
a yellow dress - an embroidered eagle –
a green parrot - I close my eyes - caws
always always always
the band plays false melodies
such passionate eyes such women
such loves such cries such loves
friend love blood friend
give me your hand how cold

It was freezing
I no longer know what time they all died
leaving me with a dismembered friend
and a bloody branch for company

Couleurs Pliées

I

We

We, who are strewn about in fragments, whose flesh flies through the air like raindrops, offer our profound apologies to everyone in this civilised world, men, women and children, because we have unintentionally appeared in their peaceful homes without asking permission. We apologise for stamping our severed body parts into their snow-white memory, because we have violated the image of the normal, whole human being in their eyes, because we have had the impertinence to leap suddenly on to news bulletins and the pages of the internet and the press, naked except for our blood and charred remains.
We apologise to all those who did not have the courage to look directly at our injuries for fear they would be too horrified, and to those unable to finish their evening meals after they had unexpectedly seen fresh images of us on television.
We apologise for the suffering we caused to all who saw us like that, unembellished, with no attempt having been made to put us back together or reassemble our remains before we appeared on their screens. We also apologise to the Israeli soldiers who took the trouble to press the buttons in their aircraft and tanks to blow us to pieces, and we are sorry for how hideous we looked after they aimed their shells and bombs straight at our soft heads, and for the hours they are now going to spend in psychiatrists' clinics, trying to become human again, like they were before our transformation into repulsive body parts that pursue them whenever they try to sleep.

We are the things you have seen on your screens and in the press, and if you made an effort to fit the pieces together, like a jigsaw, you would get a clear picture of us, so clear that you would be unable to do a thing.

Zuster

‘s nachts stelten loopt, of danst of rust.

in mijn ogen et cetera

wijdbeens staat geplant

Russische Einheiten

Eine Art Liebe, zwischen den Blocks
mit Schneeohren: unwirklich, außer der Zeit
liegen die Steine unter dem Eis
die gefrorene Bremsspur, die Pirouette
des Betrunkenen –
in meinem Herz

“Using my keen intuitive powers, I e-mailed both men at the same time, asking in Italian, "Are you perhaps brothers?"
It was Giovanni who wrote back this very provocativo message: "Even better. Twins!"
Yes—much better. Tall, dark and handsome identical twenty-five-year-old twins, as it turned out, with those giant brown liquid-center Italian eyes that just unstitch me. After meeting the boys in person, I began to wonder if perhaps I should adjust my rule somewhat about remaining celibate this year. For instance, perhaps I could remain totally celibate except for keeping a pair of handsome twenty-five-year-old Italian twin brothers as lovers. Which was slightly reminiscent of a friend of mine who is vegetarian except for bacon, but nonetheless ... I was already composing my letter to Penthouse:
In the flickering, candlelit shadows of the Roman café, it was impossible to tell whose hands were caress—
But, no.
No and no.
I chopped tvhe fantasy off in mid-word. This was not my moment to be seeking romance and (as day follows night) to further complicate my already knotty life. This was my moment to look for the kind of healing and peace that can only come from solitude.
Anyway, by now, by the middle of November, the shy, studious Giovanni and I have become dear buddies. As for Dario—the more razzle-dazzle swinger brother of the two—I have introduced him to my adorable little Swedish friend Sofie, and how they've been sharing their evenings in Rome is another kind of Tandem Exchange altogether. But Giovanni and I, we only talk. Well, we eat and we talk. We have been eating and talking for many pleasant weeks now, sharing pizzas and gentle grammatical corrections, and tonight has been no exception. A lovely evening of new idioms and fresh mozzarella.”

Uit: Call Me Magdalena

“That night, our first night on the estancia, we had gone to our room and slept like logs until morning, when we were awakened by the birds singing, the children shouting, and a few hens cackling as they escaped from the henhouse. We also heard the shouts of the cook as she chased after them, followed by Emi's cries as she leaned out her bedroom window and shouted insults at the cook. A half hour later we met in the dining room for breakfast with the other guests. This room, like the rest of the house, was furnished simply: a tall, heavy table, covered with a red-and-white checkered tablecloth, a few equally heavy chairs with woven seats (the kind that leave marks on the back of your thighs), a sideboard, and two solid chests that reached waist-high on a person of average height. The children had to stand on tiptoe to see the tops of these pieces of furniture, which held trays or bottles that didn't fit on the table. At that time of day the sideboard held trays of toast and croissants and smaller trays with butter or dulce de leche, the estancia's own famous dulce de leche, cooked in a copper kettle with vanilla beans. Someone always found a hard little piece of vanilla bean in the sauce and sucked it clean before tossing it out the window. Every so often I'm visited by the spirit of the countryside I knew when I was a girl: the birds singing, the dulce de leche.
"How strange! I thought you found the country boring."
"It never bores me to talk about the country, because I can talk about twilight, the breeze gently ruffling the stalks of wheat, the contentment of the farmer and the fragrance of the wisteria ... Nothing about droughts or the va-a-a-st distances. In any case, we finally had our breakfast, together with some very badly behaved children."

Babi Yar (Fragment)

O, Russia of my heart, I know that you
Are international, by inner nature.
But often those whose hands are steeped in filth
Abused your purest name, in name of hatred.

I know the kindness of my native land.
How vile, that without the slightest quiver
The antisemites have proclaimed themselves
The “Union of the Russian People!”

It seems to me that I am Anna Frank,
Transparent, as the thinnest branch in April,
And I’m in love, and have no need of phrases,
But only that we gaze into each other’s eyes.
How little one can see, or even sense!
Leaves are forbidden, so is sky,
But much is still allowed – very gently
In darkened rooms each other to embrace.

-“They come!”

-“No, fear not – those are sounds
Of spring itself.
She’s coming soon.
Quickly, your lips!”

-“They break the door!”

-“No, river ice is breaking…”

Wild grasses rustle over Babi Yar,
The trees look sternly, as if passing judgement.
Here, silently, all screams, and, hat in hand,
I feel my hair changing shade to gray.

Ha!

“Miss Pinkerton’s attachment was, as may be supposed from the high position and eminent virtues of that lady, calm and dignified; but Miss Jemima had already whimpered several times at the idea of Amelia’s departure; and, but for fear of her sister, would have gone off in downright hysterics, like the heiress (who paid double) of St. Kitt’s. Such luxury of grief, however, is only allowed to parlour-boarders. Honest Jemima had all the bills, and the washing, and the mending, and the puddings, and the plate and crockery, and the servants to superintend. But why speak about her? It is probable that we shall not hear of her again from this moment to the end of time, and that when the great filigree iron gates are once closed on her, she and her awful sister will never issue therefrom into this little world of history.
But as we are to see a great deal of Amelia, there is no harm in saying, at the outset of our acquaintance, that she was a dear little creature; and a great mercy it is, both in life and in novels, which (and the latter especially) abound in villains of the most sombre sort, that we are to have for a constant companion so guileless and good-natured a person. As she is not a heroine, there is no need to describe her person; indeed I am afraid that her nose was rather short than otherwise, and her cheeks a great deal too round and red for a heroine; but her face blushed with rosy health, and her lips with the freshest of smiles, and she had a pair of eyes which sparkled with the brightest and honestest good-humour, except indeed when they filled with tears, and that was a great deal too often; for the silly thing would cry over a dead canary-bird; or over a mouse, that the cat haply had seized upon; or over the end of a novel, were it ever so stupid; and as for saying an unkind word to her, were any persons hard-hearted enough to do so--why, so much the worse for them. Even Miss Pinkerton, that austere and godlike woman, ceased scolding her after the first time, and though she no more comprehended sensibility than she did Algebra, gave all masters and teachers particular orders to treat Miss Sedley with the utmost gentleness, as harsh treatment was injurious to her.”

Hierna werkte Thompson kort als redacteur voor Time Magazine in New York. A Strange and Terrible Saga Of The Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs".

Uit: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

“We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive. ..." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about 100 miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"
Then it was quiet again. My attorney had taken his shirt off and was pouring beer on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. "What the hell are you yelling about?" he muttered, staring up at the sun with his eyes closed and covered with wraparound Spanish sunglasses. "Never mind," I said. "It's your turn to drive." I hit the brakes and aimed the Great Red Shark toward the shoulder of the highway. No point mentioning those bats, I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough.
It was almost noon, and we still had more than 100 miles to go. They would be tough miles. Very soon, I knew, we would both be completely twisted. But there was no going back, and no time to rest. We would have to ride it out. Press registration for the fabulous Mint 400 was already underway, and we had to get there by four to claim our soundproof suite. A fashionable sporting magazine in New York had taken care of the reservations, along with this huge red Chevy convertible we'd just rented off a lot on the Sunset Strip ... and I was, after all, a professional journalist; so I had an obligation to cover the story, for good or ill.
The sporting editors had also given me $300 in cash, most of which was already spent on extremely dangerous drugs. The trunk of the car looked like a mobile police narcotics lab. We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers ... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.
All this had been rounded up the night before, in a frenzy of high-speed driving all over Los Angeles County – from Topanga to Watts, we picked up everything we could get our hands on. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can."
