Zomer

denk je;
in het water zie je dat precies;

een man is neergestreken,

Uit: Sixteen Years of Silence

“Aadu Vassel had once lived in city, studied mathematics at Tartu University, played flute in an early music consort and made big plans for life, until one day he was struck by love – that first and true, grand and pure love which always strikes a person like a lightning bolt out of a clear blue sky. Aadu had been dating his loved one for three months, when he finally plucked up courage to reveal his true feelings to the girl - but she rejected his words, laughing.
After that the wounded man swore to himself that if the most beautiful words one can ever say in this world were trampled into mud like this, no other words should follow either. And indeed – from that day on Aadu Vassel didn't say another word to anyone.
Disappointed in people, life and himself, the young man moved in Tuhkja farm in Soomaa. That was the place of peace and silence, still out of the reach of noise made by people, with no culture or newspapers, nor electricity. He was surrounded by nothing but dozens of kilometres of woods, bogs and meadows, where wolves and bears wandered around. Aadu Vassel started a new life there in solitude, planted a garden around the house and ate food given by the Raudna River and the surrounding woods and bogs. Later, when the circumstances called for it, he started doing odd jobs in the nearest farms, reaching an agreement in everything by means of facial mimic and hand gestures. The people in Soomaa, never a particularly talkative crowd, were completely fine with such a way of communication.
During the first couple of years, some friends from Tartu used to come to visit, and Aadu Vassel was always happy to host them, even though he still remained silent. He served them tea, fish and oven-baked potatoes, and in the shadows of mighty oak trees they drank wine and played joyful music around the fire. However, after one or two years Aadu was gradually forgotten, as the lives of his city friends got busier with the passing of time. Work needed to be done, children had to be raised, and quite frankly – it was a rather complicated undertaking to visit Aadu in the middle of the deep woods far away.”

The Horizon

I stood facing the horizon over the East Sea.
What had become of the seventeen hundred
koan-riddles?
The sound of waves
the sound of waves.
Playing with you I threw them away.

A Rosary

Angulimala was a devil of a cutthroat.
That fellow
sliced off the fingers of the people he killed
and wore them
strung dingle-dangle around his neck,
including his father's fingers.

That was a real hundred-eight bead rosary.
Every bead on the string
a life.

The Wind

Never beg the wind for mercy.
Tall wild lilies and such
scented white lilies and such
one-day lilies and such
once all your stems have snapped
produce new buds. It's not too late.

»Three minutes out, five minutes out!«, brüllte er.

Uit: The Basketball Diaries

“The more I read the more I know it now, heavier each day, that I need to write. I think of poetry and how I see it as just a raw block of stone ready to be shaped, the way words are never a horrible limit to me, just tools to shape.  I just get the images from the upstairs vault (it all comes in images) and fling ’em around like bricks, sometimes clean and smooth and then sloppy and ready to fall on top of you later.  Like this house where I got to sometimes tear out a room and make it another size or shape so the rest make sense…or no sense at all. And when I’m done I’m stoned as on whatever you got in your pockets right now, dig?
Now I got all these diaries that have the greatest hero a writer needs, this crazy fucking New York. Soon I’m gonna wake a lot of dudes off their asses and let them know what’s really going down in the blind alley out there in the pretty streets with double garages. I got a tap on all your wires, folks. I’m just really a wise ass kid getting wiser and I’m going to get even somehow for your dumb hatred and all them war baby dreams you legt in my scarred bed with dreams of bombs falling above that cliff I’m hanging steady to. Maybe someday just an eight-page book, that’s all, and each time a page gets turned a section of the Pentagon goes blast up in smoke. Solid.”

Uit: Op Oloop (Vertaald door Lisa Dillman)

"It's no use. I'll never break free. Force of habit has forced my hand. All I ever wanted was to mold myself from something small and insignificant into something great, like a little Renaissance jewel, patiently chiseled, sparkling with intuition, shimmering with wisdom. Alas, idiotically, I chose to enroll myself in the bitter school of constraint. I've turned my psyche into a stopwatch of perfect and ineluctable exactitude--complete with alarm and glow-in-the-dark numerals ... I hear and see my failure at all times, and with absolute accuracy. And I suffer, unable to defeat my undignified genius, strangling everything from the tiniest whims to the most overwhelming urges. And yet ... I find that a new insurrection, timid yesterday, implacable today, is trying to create chaos in the already crowded house of my mind. To no avail. Constraint has long since castrated my need to be something in the eyes of the world. Instead I've only managed to be some thing."
He wasn't actually speaking. His voice was directed inwards, towards a daimon curled up in his mind.
Just then his manservant walked in.
"Sir. Allow me to remind you that today, Sunday, at ten-thirty, you are scheduled to have your Turkish bath.
You have only a few minutes if you still want to arrive on time. Shall I call for the car?"
"Unbelievable! I've told you before, I never forget anything: the car has already been called for. Now, please see that you deliver this correspondence to the corresponding addresses. Today."
The mechanical nod of his manservant's close-cropped head caused his chin to tap his chest. Then he bowed to hand Op Oloop hat, cane, and gloves."

Marine

Quel est ce flux
Et ce reflux
Qui montent sur moi,
Et me font croire
Que j’étais endormie,
Sur l’île,
Avant le montant,
Et les vagues
Maintenant
Me surprennent
Tout à l’alentour?

Est-ce dans un coquillage
Que j’entends la mer?
Est-ce le vent sur nos têtes,
Ou le sang qui bat à ma tempe?

Dans quelle marine
Ai-je donc vu mes yeux?

Qui donc a dit
Qu’ils étaient calmes
Comme un puits,
Et qu’on pouvait
S’asseoir sur la margelle
Et mettre tout le bras
Jusqu’au coude
Dans l’eau lisse?

Gare aux courants du fond,
Au sel, aux algues,
Et aux beaux noyés
Qui dorment les yeux ouverts,
En attente de la tempête
Qui les ramènera
À la surface de l’eau,
Entre les cils.

Uit: Moby Dick

“But here is an artist. He desires to paint you the dreamiest, shadiest, quietest, most enchanting bit of romantic landscape in all the valley of the Saco. What is the chief element he employs? There stand his trees, each with a hollow trunk, as if a hermit and a crucifix were within; and here sleeps his meadow, and there sleep his cattle; and up from yonder cottage goes a sleepy smoke. Deep into distant woodlands winds a mazy way, reaching to overlapping spurs of mountains bathed in their hill-side blue. But though the picture lies thus tranced, and though this pine-tree shakes down its sighs like leaves upon this shepherd’s head, yet all were vain, unless the shepherd’s eye were fixed upon the magic stream before him. Go visit the Prairies in June, when for scores on scores of miles you wade knee-deep among tiger-lilies—what is the one charm wanting?—Water—there is not a drop of water there! Were Niagara but a cataract of sand, would you travel your thousand miles to see it? Why did the poor poet of Tennessee, upon suddenly receiving two handfuls of silver, deliberate whether to buy him a coat, which he sadly needed, or invest his money in a pedestrian trip to Rockaway Beach? Why is almost every robust healthy boy with a robust healthy soul in him, at some time or other crazy to go to sea? Why upon your first voyage as a passenger, did you yourself feel such a mystical vibration, when first told that you and your ship were now out of sight of land? Why did the old Persians hold the sea holy? Why did the Greeks give it a separate deity, and own brother of Jove? Surely all this is not without meaning. And still deeper the meaning of that story of Narcissus, who because he could not grasp the tormenting, mild image he saw in the fountain, plunged into it and was drowned. But that same image, we ourselves see in all rivers and oceans. It is the image of the ungraspable phantom of life; and this is the key to it all. »

Bashio III

dichters, gedichten,
droombeeld, verhaal, getijden
van toen, ooit, nu,
naast me, achter me, op de maat
van de mot tegen het licht, zinnen,
ooit hardop gesproken in een andere ruimte,
nu bij mij binnengelopen
als de omarming van vrienden, de monden
van al deze doden in het middelste
nachtuur,
de adem waarvan ik leef,
en jij.

Latijn

In een duister woud, zeker,
en het midden al jaren voorbij,
hoefde ik geen volkstaal
meer uit te vinden.

Niets wat ik had te zeggen
kon daarin nog klinken,
mijn woorden waren weer
latijn geworden, onleesbaar, gesloten.

Dichter, klerk, geheime diaken
van de kleinste gemeente,
de afkerige sekte van verhulde beduiding,
gewend naar zichzelf,

een gnosis van gemaskerde zinnen
in een steeds onherkenbaarder schrift.

Er ontbreekt iets

Volle melk, hete aardappelen,
schroeiend vlees.
Meer! Erger!

weg.

Inmiddels waren we veranderd in bloemen:
hyacinten, madeliefjes, tulpen, seringen enzovoort,
enzovoort,
en we bloeiden
bokkig zwijgend en teleurgesteld.
Ja, we bloeiden genadeloos.

Onze rok

Rock-'n-roll is here to stay!
O jee, we veranderen

in reizigers. Met een zwak
voor luitmuziek: sssst!

wind in riet.

troost. Ondiep. Onze rok.

hebben we hoog opgetrokken.

La Fleur

La fleur vénéneuse

Comment vais-je l’appeler
Cette belle fleur vénéneuse
Qui dans la chair s’est nichée
Trahissant mon amie malheureuse

Nous les incroyants
Avons sacrifié tous les saints
Du paradis des croyants
Pour sauver de mon amie son sein

Comment vais-je t’appeler
Fleur de sang
Blottie au cœur de mon aimé
Là où je dépose mes baisers gourmands

Est venue s’immiscer cette sauvage
Me faisant trembler de rage
Là où, ma bouche contre son cœur
Je réchauffais nos ardeurs

Chardon, tu me piques la langue
Quand tel un petit chat
Je lèche le mamelon qui tangue
Pour conjurer le sort à tout va

Comment vais-je t’appeler
Fleur piquante, envahissante

Quand enfin l’imparfait
Dans notre vie sera utilisé
Pour fêter ta mort à jamais.

Uit:Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire

„Then, just when things were looking very serious for Frank, the report on the Riddles' bodies came back and changed everything.
The police had never read an odder report.
A team of doctors had examined the bodies and had concluded that none of the Riddles had been poisoned, stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated, or (as far as they could tell) harmed at all. In fact (the report continued, in a tone of unmistakable bewilderment), the Riddles all appeared to be in perfect health - apart from the fact that they were all dead. The doctors did note (as though determined to find something wrong with the bodies) that each of the Riddles had a look of terror upon his or her face - but as the frustrated police said, whoever heard of three people being frightened to death?
As there was no proof that the Riddles had been murdered at all, the police were forced to let Frank go.
The Riddles were buried in the Little Hangleton churchyard, and their graves remained objects of curiosity for a while. To everyone's surprise, and amid a cloud of suspicion, Frank Bryce returned to his cottage on the grounds of the Riddle House.
"'S far as I'm concerned, he killed them, and I don't care what the police say," said Dot in the Hanged Man. "And if he had any decency, he'd leave here, knowing as how we knows he did it."
But Frank did not leave. He stayed to tend the garden for the next family who lived in the Riddle House, and then the next for neither family stayed long. Perhaps it was partly because of Frank that the new owners said there was a nasty feeling about the place, which, in the absence of inhabitants, started to fall into disrepair...”

Still vom Klatschen und vom Schreien
Über meine derben Witze
Steh ich plötzlich vor den Reihen
Einsam, all der leeren Sitze.

Ausgetrocknet sind die Lippen,
Hals und Kopf sind leer gesungen,
Stechend ist in meiner Rippen
Käfig mir mein Herz gesprungen.

Stunden später, müd, beim Feste,
Einen scharfen Schnaps im Glase,
Stierte eine auf die Reste
Schminke über meiner Nase.

Aussatz ziert mich! Einen Narren
Hast du neben dir zu sitzen.
Hoffst, ich zög dir jeden Karren
Aus dem Dreck mit meinen Witzen.

Freilich kann ichs! Nur Sekunden,
Da die Augen sich noch drehen
In artistisch großen Runden
Um die Augen, die mich sehen.

Alles, was ich hab, verteil ich,
So erfinde ich mein Glück.
Meine Narrenfreiheit freilich

Komm, ruf an!"

"Insiste.
M'appelle à la tâche.
Rien à prouver. Aucune vérité à exhumer. Comprendre. Seulement comprendre. Se leurrer à la commande. Qu'importe ! Me vengerai de lui.

“In Banaras District there is a village called Bira in which an old, childless widow used to live. She was a Gond woman named Bhungi and she didn't own either a scrap of land or a house to live in. Her only source of livelihood was a parching oven. The village folk customarily have one meal a day of parched grains, so there was always a crowd around Bhungi's oven.
Whatever grain she was paid for parching she would grind or fry and eat it.
She slept in a corner of the same little shack that sheltered the oven. As soon as it was light she'd get up and go out to gather dry leaves from all around to make her fire. She would stack the leaves right next to the oven, and after twelve, light the fire. But on the days when she had to parch grain for Pandit Udaybhan Pandey, the owner of the village, she went to bed hungry. She was obliged to work without pay for Pandit Udaybhan Pandey She also had to fetch water for his house. And, for this reason, from time to time the oven was not lit. She lived in the Pandit's village, the refore he had full authority to make her do any sort of odd job. In his opinion if she received food for working from him, how could it be considered as work done without pay?
He was doing her a favour, in fact, by letting her live in the village at all.
It was spring, a day on which the fresh grain was fried and eaten and given as a gift. No fire was lit in the houses Bhungi's oven was being put to good use today. There was a crowd worthy of a village fair around her. She had scarcely opportunity to draw a breath. Because of the customer's impatience, squabbles kept breaking out. Then two servants arrived, each carrying a heaped basket of grain from Pandit Udaybhan with the order to parch it right away. When Bhungi saw the two baskets she was alarmed. It was already after twelve and even by sunset, she would not havetime to parch so much grain. Now she would have to stay at the oven parching until after dark for no payment. In despair she took the two baskets. One of the flunkeys said menacingly, 'Don't waste any time or you'll be sorry.'
