Stony Limits (Fragment)
(In Memoriam: Charles Doughty, 1843-1926)

I know how on turning to noble hills
And stark deserts happily still preserved
For men whom no gregariousness fills
With the loneliness for which they are nerved
—The lonely at-one-ment with all worth while—
I can feel as if the landscape and I
Became each other and see my smile
In the corners of the vastest contours lie
And share the gladness and peace you knew,
—The supreme human serenity that was you!

I have seen Silence lift his head
And Song, like his double, lift yours,
And know, while nearly all that seems living is dead,
You were always consubstantial with all that endures.
Would it were on Earth! Not since Ezekiel has that faw sun ringed
A worthier head; red as Adam you stood
In the desert, the horizon with vultures black-winged,
And sang and died in this still greater solitude
Where I sit by your skull whose emptiness is worth
The sum of almost all the full heads now on Earth
—By your roomy skull where most men might well spend
Longer than you did in Arabia, friend!

Baldur-Christus

Falbe Blitze stechen nieder,
Rasen durch die Straßen der Stadt,
Die wie von schwarzer Asche verschüttet starrt,
Fern verdröhnend . . .
Dann weicher Regen . . .
Atmende Stille . . .
Die Palmen schauern sich
Den Rieseltau von feuchten Blättern.
Ein Windstoß reißt die Wolken auseinander . . .

"It's my bee!" "It's mine!" "Liar!" Seven or eight young boys swept across the fields like a whirlwind, swinging sticks back and forth through the yellow mustard blossoms and pure-white radish flowers, looking for the bees with honey sacs, called Korean bees. Yaemon's son, Hiyoshi, was six years old, but his wrinkled face looked like a pickled plum. He was smaller than the other boys, but second to none among the village children when it came to pranks and wild behavior. "Fool!" he yelled as he was knocked down by a bigger boy while fighting over a bee. Before he could get to his feet, another boy stepped on him. Hiyoshi tripped him "The bee belongs to the one who caught it! If you catch it, it's your bee!" he said, nimbly jumping up and snatching a bee out of the air. "Yow! This one's mine!" Clutching the bee, Hiyoshi took another ten steps before opening his hand. Breaking off the head and the wings, he popped it into his mouth. The bee's stomach was a sac of sweet honey. To these children, who had never known the taste of sugar, it was a marvel that anything could taste so sweet. Squinting, Hiyoshi let the honey run down his throat and smacked his lips. The other children looked on, their mouths watering. "Monkey!" shouted a large boy nicknamed Ni'o, the only one for whom Hiyoshi was no match. Knowing this, the others joined in. "Baboon!" "Monkey!" "Monkey, monkey, monkey!" they chorused. Even Ofuku, the smallest boy, joined in. He was said to be eight years old, but he was not much bigger than the six-year-old Hiyoshi. He was much better looking, however; his complexion was fair, and his eyes and nose were nicely set in his face. As the child of a wealthy villager, Ofuku was the only one who wore a silk kimono. His real name was probably something like Fukutaro or Fukumatsu, but it had been shortened and prefaced with the letter o in imitation of a practice common among the sons of wealthy families. "You had to say it too, didn't you!" Hiyoshi said, glaring at Ofuku. He did not care when the other boys called him monkey, but Ofuku was different. "Have you forgotten that I'm the one who always sticks up for you, you spineless jellyfish!"

Uit: Dancing After Hours

“He slipped into masturbation and nearly always, afterward, felt he was too old for this, too, and what he wiped from his hand onto the sheet was his dignity. But sometimes on long afternoons when he could think of nothing but Doreen Brodie, of phoning her and asking her for a date, of having dinner with her, of making love with her, and so falling in love with her, he resorted to the dry and heartless caress of his hand; then, his member spent and limp as his soul, he focused clearly on his life again, and he did not call Doreen. He had married friends and went to their homes for dinner, or joined them at bars, but mostly he was alone in his apartment. So working nights, which had been an intrusion on his marriages and an interference with his dating, became a blessing. He started reading history or philosophy during the day, going for long walks, and keeping a journal in spiral notebooks. He wrote every morning before breakfast: reflections on what he read, on people at the restaurant, sketches of the town and river and sky as he saw them on his walks. He wrote slowly, used a large dictionary, and took pleasure in precise nouns, verbs, and adjectives. He liked working with colors. He wrote nothing painful or erotic; he did not want his children to feel pity or shame when they went through his effects after his death. For a summer and fall, a winter and part of a spring, Lee Trambath lived like this, till an April morning when he woke to the sound and smell of rain. As he dressed he remembered that yesterday he had meant to buy coffee, but, drawn by sunshine and a salty breeze from the sea, he had walked along the river, instead of to the store. He wanted to write about rain, try to put its smell and sound on paper. »

Zondagavond rond middernacht weer thuis in Amsterdam.

“Thank you, General.”
The Avenger took off precariously, like a creature off balance. It veered to one side, then the other, making the shrill noise of a tormented beast. Bat looked out and saw the city fading under him, reduced to a patchwork of coloured roofs, cut by the road network, dotted with treetops. A church steeple loomed in the distance, menacing like a spear sharpened to impale condemned sinners. For a moment he thought about the astrologer’s Learjet and he wondered whether the man had also been interviewed in the air. From what he had heard about the sensational spread of astrology in the country, and the evidence of it he had seen in the newspapers, he concluded that if astrologers built churches the skyline would be crowded with their spires. His mind wandered and he remembered stories about British tycoons who held business meetings in private jets, aboard yachts or from inside golden coffins. It struck him that the General might be playing at that kind of eccentricity in a bid to impress or intimidate.
“The most beautiful city in the world,” the General said emphatically as if anticipating stiff opposition.
Bat did not agree, but said nothing. He looked out the window as if to confirm his views.
“Do you know why? It is because I own a fifth of it. I own a fifth of everything in this country. That comes down to about four million people, ten million fishes, two thousand crocodiles, twenty islands and much more. You can imagine the feeling. There is nothing like it, I can assure you,” he said, looking outside for a long moment, as if to make sure the city was still there, a smug smile on his face.
On any other day, Bat might have panicked, but today he was determined to succeed and was not going to let anybody stand in his way. A man who openly boasted about owning a fifth of the country could be managed. All it took was studying his ways, finding his weaknesses, and going around him.
“Right now I am looking for somebody who is hungry and dedicated.
Loyalty is paramount and disloyalty a cardinal sin. This government hates half-measures, I can assure you. You have it all or you lose the whole lot. You are either in, or out in the cold. It has taken me twenty years to get where I am and I like it. If you are ready to work hard, I guarantee you the fulfilment of your dreams,” he said sombrely”.

A Display Of Mackerel

They lie in parallel rows,
on ice, head to tail,
each a foot of luminosity
barred with black bands,
which divide the scales'
radiant sections

like seams of lead
in a Tiffany window.
Iridescent, watery

prismatics: think abalone,
the wildly rainbowed
mirror of a soap-bubble sphere,

think sun on gasoline.
Splendor, and splendor,
and not a one in any way

distinguished from the other
- nothing about them
of individuality. Instead

they're all exact expressions
of the one soul,
each a perfect fulfillment

of heaven's template,
mackerel essence. As if,
after a lifetime arriving

at this enameling, the jeweler's
made uncountable examples
each as intricate

in its oily fabulation
as the one before;
a cosmos of champleve.

Suppose we could iridesce,
like these, and lose ourselves
entirely in the universe

of shimmer- would you want
to be yourself only,
unduplicatable, doomed

to be lost? They'd prefer,
plainly, to be flashing participants,
multitudinous. Even on ice

they seem to be bolting
forward, heedless of stasis.
They don't care they're dead

and nearly frozen,
just as, presumably,
they didn't care that they were living:

all, all for all,
the rainbowed school
and its acres of brilliant classrooms,

in which no verb is singular,
or every one is. How happy they seem,
even on ice, to be together, selfless,

which is the price of gleaming.

Uit: A Thousand Peaceful Cities (Vertaald door David Frick)

“We followed him up the wooden stairs. Then with all our might we squeezed ropes fatter than our arms. The sweltering noon slowly began to smolder.
“Let the littlest bell sing,” cried Sexton Messerschmidt at the top of his voice, and he looked ironically upon our pathetic efforts. With seeming negligence he grasped the rope we had been straining at so ineffectually. “You gentlemen lack not only artistic talent but also physical strength. You are an absolutely worthless generation. When you grow up you will bring not only the Lutheran Church but also People’s Poland to ruin—which, after all, who knows, maybe would be for the better.
“This is how it’s done. With your entire being, not just with your hands. We are in a holy place, therefore you gentlemen will magnanimously forgive me if I don’t suggest just what you can do for yourselves with nothing but your hands. In the profession—in the vocation—of the bell-ringer the hand is not an upper extremity but the extension of the soul. Let the littlest bell sing,” cried Sexton Messerschmidt, and at his call the littlest bell moved. “Tym’s bell-foundry in Warsaw,” Messerschmidt outshouted the first heartbeats, “Tym’s bell-foundry in Warsaw, bronze practically in statu crudi, bronze without alloy, which is why it has a pure sound, even if it doesn’t carry. As the story goes, this bell was cast by order of the enlightened protector of the Reformation, Mikołaj Radziwiłł the Black. It was hung by our Calvinist brethren in the church tower in Kiejdany. It served them faithfully, and with its pure voice it sustained them in the faith, which, although perfect, is after all also the correct one. Henryk Sienkiewicz mentions the church in Kiejdany in his Trilogy. Unfortunately, Sienkiewicz’s pen did not describe the sound of our bell, and it’s a pity, a pity. You, gentlemen, of course, haven’t yet read the Trilogy.”
“I’ve read it, I’ve already read With Fire and Sword, and The Deluge, and Pan Wołodyjowski. I’ve read it,” I wanted to call out, but I restrained myself and bit my tongue. My psychological instinct, not yet perfected, but already existing, whispered to me that it wasn’t a good thing to demonstrate any sort of abilities in the presence of Sexton Messerschmidt."

„So Ivan Stepanich shows up and says:
"I work," he says, "like an elephant for thirty two rubles and change in a co-op. "I smile," he says, "at the customers and weigh out their sausage for them, and "and out of that," he says, "for my hard-earned kopecks I buy myself bottle brushes, and no way am I going to permit unauthorized outside personnel to use these brushes."
Here it gets noisy again, and a discussion gets going over the brush. All the tenants, of course, come barging and bustling their way into the kitchen. Gavrilych the invalid shows up too.
"All this noise," he says, "but no fighting?"
Right after this remark a fight was in fact corroborated. Away they went.
The thing is, our little kitchen's narrow. Unsuitable for fighting. A tight squeeze. Pots and primus stoves everywhere. No place to turn around. And twelve people all packed in there. Try to smack one in the kisser and you clobber three. And of course you keep stumbling over everything and falling down. A man with three legs couldn't keep his balance on that floor, let alone a one-legged invalid.
But in spite of that, our invalid, the ornery buzzard, comes barreling right into the thick of it. Ivan Stepanych, whose brush it is, shouts at him:
"Stay out of it, Gavrilych. Watch out or you'll get your one and only leg ripped off."
Gavrilych says: "Big deal," he goes, "so I lose my leg!" "Only," he says, " I can't leave now. They've busted my whole counternance bloody."
And as a matter of fact just then someone smacks him across the kisser. Well, so he doesn't leave and goes on the attack. And right there someone up and bonks him on the noodle with a saucepan.“
