“7:00 uur Maison Taciturne Le Muy, Provence, Frankrijk
Elsa was net thuisgekomen.

2. Isolement
Hang om uw nek een houten bord
met daarop duidelijk en kort
uw eigen naam, dus: 'Ik heet Fred,
want onbekend maakt onbemind.

stopt. Zak reut'lend door de knie.

Waar is 't meisje dat mij opwond? Ach, de veer
verroestte.

Uit: Alfred And Emily

“Not far from the cricket pitch there were, sitting on the grass with cushions, a large, fair woman, whose reddened face said she did not enjoy the heat, a tiny shred of a girl, her daughter, and a girl who had just leaned forward, her eyes on Mrs Lane's face to hear what she was saying. 'It is a very serious thing, my dear, quarrelling with your father.'
At this moment, a youth was coming forward to stand with his bat at the stumps, and the fair woman leaned to send him a wave, which he acknowledged with a smile and a nod. He was strik-ingly good-looking, dark and well built, and that there was something especial about his standing there was shown by a sudden silence. The bowler sent down a ball and the batsman easily knocked it well away.
'Sssh,' said Mary Lane. 'Just a minute, I want to see ...' Daisy, the little girl, was already leaning forward to watch, and now Emily McVeagh, the other girl, watched too, though she was certainly not seeing much. She was flushed with excitement and determination, and kept glancing sideways at the older woman, hoping for her attention.
Another ball sped down towards the handsome youth, another prompt rebuff, and now there was a ripple of applause.
'Well done,' said Mrs Lane, and was ready to clap, but the bowler had begun his run forward.
Again ... again ... a ball came close to where they sat and the fieldsman ran to retrieve it. The innings went on, there were several scatters of applause, and then a burst of clapping when the youth sent a ball almost as far as the children's games.
It was time for tea. The long trestle table was besieged, while a woman stood by the urn and handed out cups. 'I could do with one, Daisy,' said her mother, and the girl ran to join the queue.
Now Mrs Lane remembered that very much more was being expected of her by the girl Emily, so she turned her attention to her and said, 'I don't really think you know yet what you are in for.'
Mrs Lane was a woman with influence, friends in useful places, and she had been finding out from a dozen different sources just what Emily McVeagh was in for.
The girl had defied her father, and said to him that, no, she would not go to university, she would be a nurse. 'She'll be a skivvy among skivvies,' Mrs Lane had said to herself, shocked at the girl's decision“.

Rejected (Fragment)

Alas ! I have lost my God,
My beautiful God Apollo.
Wherever his footsteps trod
My feet were wont to follow.

But Oh ! it fell out one day
My soul was so heavy with weeping,
That I laid me down by the way ;
And he left me while I was sleeping.

And my soul awoke in the night,
And I bowed my ear for his fluting,
And I heard but the breath of the flight
Of wings and the night-birds hooting.

And night drank all her cup,
And I went to the shrine in the hollow,
And the voice of my cry went up :
' Apollo ! Apollo ! Apollo ! '

But he never came to the gate,
And the sun was hid in a mist,
And there came one walking late,
And I knew it was Christ,

He took my soul and bound it
With cords of iron wire,
Seven times round He wound it
With the cords of my desire.

The cords of my desire,
While my desire slept, ,
Were seven bands of wire
To bind my soul that wept.

Uit: Serious Sweet

“Because lying in bed when awake was inadvisable, she’d come up here to see the dawn arriving. The council left the Top Park open, even at night. The qualities of the view it offered made constant access a must. People felt they might have to nip round any time and check on the metropolis where it lay uncharacteristically prostrate at their feet. And wasn’t it flat – the city – when you saw it like this, so plainly founded on a tidal basin, rooted in mud? Strangers would remark to strangers about that. Inhabitants of the Hill didn’t need to, they were used to it. They could stroll along, perhaps through music – the Hill is a musical place, people practise instruments – and they could hope for the startle of a good London sunset, the blood and the glitter of that splashing on banks of distant windows, making dreams in the sky. Or else they might get the brawling roll of storms, or firework displays, or the tall afternoons when the blues of summer boiled and glared like the flag of some extraordinary, flawless nation. Even on an average day, the city needed watching. You shouldn’t turn your back on it, because it was a sly old thing.
She’d wanted a sunrise. Or rather, she’d wanted to be out and it had been very early and she’d had no choice about what she would get – at dawn the sunrise is reliably what will arrive, you can be calm about that, no fear of disappointments. You’re all right. She’d cut in and taken the broad path, safe between distantly dozing trees, no shadows to hide any bother. A woman by your – self – you didn’t want to feel constantly threatened, but you’d no call to be daft about things, either. You don’t like to put yourself at risk. Well, do you? No, you don’t. You shouldn’t. At risk is no way to be.
Then she’d gone round past the silent tennis court and headed – with fair confidence, even in the dimness, because she was here a lot – headed over the oily-feeling grass to the absolute highest point on the slope. Foxes had been singing, screaming, somewhere close.”

Juin

Ruissellent, clairs et gais, sur la mousse et le thym ;

Paît dans l'herbe abondante au bord des tièdes eaux ;

Midnight

November. Midnight damp. Chalk-white beneath
The moon the village lies, by the oppressive
Hush overcome. The tide sweeps in, impassive,
Its voice all deep solemnity and breadth.

The port flag, soaked, droops on its slender mast.
Just o'er the mast, above the mass of hazy
Clouds torn in parts and running swiftly east,
The disc of moon glides, strangely white and glassy.

I reach the steps. Mysterious the light
And duller here, the tide's voice fiercer, louder.
The bathhouse piles, defenseless, heave and shudder.

Far out - a grey abyss. No sea in sight.
Below, amid the foam that seethes and hisses,
Like seals wet by the surf the boulders glisten.

The Bedouin

The Dead Sea, and, beyond, the greyish, broken
Line of the hills. Noon. Mealtime. Deft of hand,
He bathes his mare, then sits a hookah smoking
On Jordan's shore. Like molten bronze the sand.

The Dead Sea, and, beyond, in space suspended,
Mirages swimming in a golden haze.
Light. Warmth. A wild dove coos. The oleander
And storksbill with the reds of springtime blaze.

He sits, a hooded hawk, and smokes, and raises
His voice in song, and, droning sleepily,
The tamarisk and oleander praises.

Bard, robber, nomad tribesman, glad is he
To coils of smoke in simple verse and flowing
The peaks to liken beyond Siddim showing!

Inderdaad. Vijf uur, nieuws. Maar eerst nog even de Rabo Welkomstassistent, whatever that may be. Reclame.

Hoogstamboom

kijk, ik leid je door een veld
en beveel de pioenrozen
bloei!
hun bladen gaan open als kool
traag gapen bloemknoppen

kijk
ik aai over je arm
en laat hedera bloeien
klokwinde, wingerd, wisteria
klimroos en wikke

kijk want ik brand
wierookstruiken
nardus en kalmus
ze branden saffraanrood
kaneelzacht maar

wacht, neem deze tak
van een paardenkastanje
jij had een wiegje uit bloesem
hier is een kerselaren kroon
een mantel van appelbloembladen
dan plant ik voor jou
een geurige treurperenboom
of janbaas, of juttepeer, Notaire Lepin
die nooit zal roesten

Noli me tangere

ik droom:
in de tuin van geheimen ben ik
plotseling: jij
je draagt een jampot in je hand
half vol met ik weet niet wat
en zegt: pardon meneer

herkent me dan
de schoffel in mijn hand verkrampt
mijn ogen star
val je voor mijn voeten neer
smeekt me je terug te nemen

noli me tangere zeg ik

Un soir, t'en souvient-il ? nous voguions en silence ;

Du rivage charmé frappèrent les échos ;

Suspendez votre cours :
Laissez-nous savourer les rapides délices
Des plus beaux de nos jours !

" Assez de malheureux ici-bas vous implorent,
Coulez, coulez pour eux ;
Prenez avec leurs jours les soins qui les dévorent ;

Le temps m'échappe et fuit ;

A Broken Friendship

Alas! they had been friends in youth;
But whispering tongues can poison truth;
And constancy lives in realms above;
And life is thorny; and youth is vain;
And to be wroth with one we love,
Doth work like madness in the brain.
And thus is chanced, as I divine,
With Roland and Sir Leoline.
Each spake words of high disdain
And insult to his heart's best brother:
They parted - ne'er to meet again!
But never either found another
To free the hollow heart from painting -
They stood aloof, the scars remaining,
Like cliffs which had been rent asunder;
A dreary see now flows between; -
But neither heat, nor frost, nor thunder
Shall wholly do away, I ween,
The marks of that which once hath been.

Sonnet XXI

Pensive, at eve, on the hard world I mused,
And my poor heart was sad: so at the Moon
I gazed--and sighed, and sighed--for, ah! how soon
Eve saddens into night! Mine eyes perused,
With tearful vacancy, the dampy grass,
That wept and glitter'd in the paly ray,
And I did pause me on my lonely way,
And mused me on the wretched ones, who pass
O'er the black heath of Sorrow. But, alas!
Most of myself I thought: when it befell,
That the sooth Spirit of the breezy wood
Breath'd in mine ear--'All this is very well;
But much of one thing is for no thing good.'
Ah! my poor heart's inexplicable swell!

Sonnet LII

Thou gentle Look, that didst my soul beguile,
Why hast thou left me? Still in some fond dream
Revisit my sad heart, auspicious Smile!
As falls on closing flowers the lunar beam:
What time, in sickly mood, at parting day
I lay me down and think of happier years;
Of joys, that glimmered in Hope's twilight ray,
Then left me darkling in a vale of tears.
O pleasant days of Hope -- forever flown!
Could I recall you!-- But that thought is vain.
Availeth not Persuasion's sweetest tone
To lure the fleet-winged travellers back again:
Yet fair, tho' faint, their images shall gleam
Like the bright Rainbow on an evening stream.

Stony Grey Soil

O stony grey soil of Monaghan
The laugh from my love you thieved;
You took the gay child of my passion
And gave me your clod-conceived.

You clogged the feet of my boyhood
And I believed that my stumble
Had the poise and stride of Apollo
And his voice my thick tongued mumble.

You told me the plough was immortal!
O green-life conquering plough!
The mandril stained, your coulter blunted
In the smooth lea-field of my brow.

You sang on steaming dunghills
A song of cowards' brood,
You perfumed my clothes with weasel itch,
You fed me on swinish food

You flung a ditch on my vision
Of beauty, love and truth.
O stony grey soil of Monaghan
You burgled my bank of youth!

Lost the long hours of pleasure
All the women that love young men.
O can I stilll stroke the monster's back
Or write with unpoisoned pen.

His name in these lonely verses
Or mention the dark fields where
The first gay flight of my lyric
Got caught in a peasant's prayer.

Mullahinsa, Drummeril, Black Shanco-
Wherever I turn I see
In the stony grey soil of Monaghan
Dead loves that were born for me.

Uit: Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree

“This was the ancient space where once Moorish knights used to ride and joust to catch the eye of their ladies; where the populace would assemble in large numbers, children riding on the shoulders of fathers, uncles and elder brothers as they cheered their favourites; where catcalls greeted the appearance of those who paraded in the armour of knights simply because they were creatures of the Sultan. When it was clear that a brave man had allowed one of the courtiers to win out of deference to the King or, just as likely, because he had been promised a purse full of gold dinars, the citizens of Gharnata jeered loudly. It was a citizenry well known for its independence of mind, rapier wit, and reluctance to recognize superiors. This was the city and this the place chosen by Cisneros for his demonstration of fireworks that night. The sumptuously bound and decorated volumes were a testament to the arts of the Peninsulan Arabs, surpassing the standards of the monasteries of Christendom. The compositions they contained had been the envy of scholars throughout Europe. What a splendid pile was laid before the population of the town. The soldiers who, since the early hours of the morning, had been building the wall of books had avoided the eyes of the Gharnatinos. Some onlookers were sorrowful, others tempestuous, eyes flashing, faces full of anger and defiance. Others still, their bodies swaying gently from side to side, wore vacant expressions. One of them, an old man, kept repeating the only sentence he could utter in the face of the calamity. `We are being drowned in a sea of helplessness.' Some of the soldiers, perhaps because they never had been taught to read or write, understood the enormity of the crime they were helping to perpetrate. Their own role troubled them. Sons of peasants, they recalled the stories they used to hear from their grandparents, whose tales of Moorish cruelty contrasted with accounts of their culture and learning. There were not many of these soldiers, but enough to make a difference.”

BOLIVÁR (Fragment)

 A Greek Poem

Boyaca, Ayacucho. Ideas both illustrious and eternal. I was
    there.
We’d already left the old frontiers far behind:
Back in the distance, fires were burning in Leskovik.
And in the night, the army moved up towards the battle, its
familiar sounds could already be heard.
Opposite, a grim Convoy of endless trucks returned with the
    wounded.

Don’t anyone be alarmed. Down there, see, the lake.
This is the way they'll come, beyond the rushes.
The roads have been mined: the work and repute of that
Hormovo man, renowned, unrivalled in such matters.

Everyone to their stations. The whistle’s sounding!
Come on, come on. Get the cannons uncoupled and set up,
clean the barrels with the swabs, fuses lit and held
    ready,
Cannon-balls to the right. Vrass!
Vrass, Albanian for fire: Bolivár!

Every pineapple that was hurled and exploded,
Was a rose to the glory of the great general,
As he stood, stern and unshaken, amid the dust and tumult,
Gazing on high, his forehead in the clouds,
And the sight of him caused dread: fount of awe, path of
    justice, gate of salvation.

Elles me frôlent. »

Uit: Provençal Light, a long poem

After the Orchard: "Souvenir de Mauve" (fragment)

We must
seize the instant. Learn our craft, yes. Hours with pencil or reed
whittled down to a point fine or thick as the study demands; they give
the fluid stroke of a brush where needed and the line sharp when held firm.
And perspective--here the light creates depth the eye captures best
from the planes of juxtaposed color, a Japanese print brought to life.
But learn, as Mauve taught me, the palette's arrangement, change it
as the light demands--I owe the man that.
How sad, how it robs
some of the luster from a glorious day, to find my sister's notice.
Mauve is dead. And not that old--still years of canvas to go.
What I bring to this peach tree, bright where his palette was dim,
I owe him. He had faith, he counseled my father when all
thought this drawing another delusion. I never let on that I knew--
they were set when I traded the Bible for Ingres and pencil
to have me committed. For my own good. Of course. To prevent
more scandal. How I pained them, my trackless life, my mad
veering from calling to calling--why should he believe this path
was different, this calling that called me from his
would lead anywhere better? Poor man. How little he understood,
even persuaded my sketches showed promise. Ill-fitting
trousers and jackets he bought me when desperate for paper.
A father's love grows less and less each year
like feasting on strawberries in spring until finally
he's dead.

Uit: The dispossessed

“There was a wall. It did not look important. It was built of uncut rocks roughly mortared. An adult could look right over it, and even a child could climb it. Where it crossed the roadway, instead of having a gate it degenerated into mere geometry, a line, an idea of boundary. But the idea was real. It was important. For seven generations there had been nothing in the world more important than that wall.
Like all walls it was ambiguous, two-faced. What was inside it and what was outside it depended upon which side of it you were on.
Looked at from one side, the wall enclosed a barren sixty-acre field called the Port of Anarres. On the field there were a couple of large gantry cranes, a rocket pad, three warehouses, a truck garage, and a dormitory. The dormitory looked durable, grimy, and mournful; it had no gardens, no children; plainly nobody lived there or was even meant to stay there long. It was in fact a quarantine. The wall shut in not only the landing field but also the ships that came down out of space, and the men that came on the ships, and the worlds they came from, and the rest of the universe. It enclosed the universe, leaving Anarres outside, free.
Looked at from the other side, the wall enclosed Anarres: the whole planet was inside it, a great prison camp, cut off from other worlds and other men, in quarantine.
A number of people were coming along the road towards the landing field, or standing around where the road cut through the wall.
People often came out from the nearby city of Abbenay in hopes of seeing a spaceship, or simply to see the wall. After all, it was the only boundary wall on their world. Nowhere else could they see a sign that said No Trespassing. Adolescents, particularly, were drawn to it. They came up to the wall; they sat on it. There might be a gang to watch, offloading crates from track trucks at the warehouses. There might even be a freighter on the pad. Freighters came down only eight times a year, unannounced except to syndics actually working at the Port, so when the spectators were lucky enough to see one they were excited, at first. But there they sat, and there it sat, a squat black tower in a mess of movable cranes, away off across the field. And then a woman came over from one of the warehouse crews and said, “We're shutting down for today, brothers.” She was wearing the Defense armband, a sight almost as rare as a spaceship. That was a bit of a thrill. But though her tone was mild, it was final. She was the foreman of this gang, and if provoked would be backed up by her syndics. And anyhow there wasn't anything to see. The aliens, the off-worlders, stayed hiding in their ship. No show.”

Pankaj Mishra
