Beleven

onderkoeld schrijven over eigen belevenissen
die totaal geen belevenissen zijn -

een belevenis!

Psychologie

– altijd aanwezig, nimmer verzakend –

dat uw leven na aanschaf
meer gelijkenis zal vertonen
met dit briljante, kittige, spiksplinternieuwe

Made-in-China-ding.

´Why There’s No Such Thing as ‘Culturally Gay’
I was at the foot doctor’s today. She finally figured out I’m gay.
She is an intelligent, tolerant and very politically savvy woman.
So, what -- for an intelligent, tolerant and politically savvy chiropodist -- is the immediate ‘go-to’ when she finds out her client is gay?
“Have you seen that TV show with Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent?”
No, I had to honestly say that I hadn’t.
“They had this daughter with a surrogate, and sometimes the daughter is on the show, and they are home designers -- and you really get a glimpse into their lives. Sometimes you can see them kidding each other the same way straight couples do. It’s very -- real”
Wow.
I was somewhat flabbergasted. I didn’t know what to say.
You see, there was a time when admitting to someone that you were gay might have brought other images to mind, like -- well, maybe drag, or maybe -- leather chaps or maybe even (call me crazy) fellatio?
Not nowadays. No, nowadays tell someone you’re gay and all they can think about is pair of designer guys with a daughter they paid big money for -- and oh yes how ‘similar’ these guys are to a regular, ordinary, normal straight couple.
And of course, most gay men seem pretty happy with this new image of themselves.
So when dumb straight film actors like Andrew Garfield say they are ‘culturally gay’ or
when straight, pretentious matinee idol, avant-garde wannabes like James Franco say “I’m gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I'm straight. So I guess it depends on how you define gay” -- well, we only have only ourselves to blame.
We gay men have rejected everything sexual about ourselves (‘I don’t like bathhouses, I don’t hang out on Church Street’) and everything gender bending (‘No fats and no fems please’). And we are sure to tell everyone over tea, that despite the existence of GRINDR what we all really want is to settle down, get married and adopt a baby."

Mexican in France

He says he likes Mexico.
Especially all that history.
That's what I understand
although my French
is not that good.

And wants to talk
about U.S. racism.
It's not often he meets
Mexicans in the south of France.

He remembers
a Mexican Marlon Brando once
on French tv.

How, in westerns,
the Mexicans are always
the bad guys.  And—

Is it true
all Mexicans
carry knives?

I laugh.
--Lucky for you
I'm not carrying my knife
today.

He laughs too.
--I think
the knife you carry
is abstract.

Perras

I can't imagine that goofy white woman
with you.
Her pink skin on your dark.
Your tongue on hers.  I can't
imagine without laughing.
Who would've thought.

Not her ex-boyfriend--
your good ol' ex-favorite best buddy,
the one you swore was thicker than kin,
blood white brother, friend--
who wants to slit you open like a pig
and I don't blame him.

Isn't it funny.
He acting Mexican.
You acting white.

I can't imagine this woman.
nor your white ex-wife.  Nor any
of those you've hugged and held,
so foreign from the the country we shared.

Damn.  Where's your respect?
You could've used a little imagination.
Picked someone I didn't know.  Or at least,
a bitch more to my liking.

Ich will mich erklären. Komm her, Whisky, apport!, brav!

Uit:The Blackhouse

“Panic and passion rise together in her chest as they slip past the shadow of an old fishing boat canted at an angle on the pebbles above the watermark. Through the open half of the concrete boatshed, they can see the beach beyond, framed by unglazed windows. The sea seems lit from within, almost luminous. Uilleam lets go of her hand and slides open the wooden door, just enough to allow them past. And he pushes her inside. It is dark here. A rank smell of diesel and salt water and seaweed fill the air, like the sad perfume of hurried, pubescent sex. The dark shadow of a boat on its trailer looms above them, two small rectangular windows opening like peepholes on to the shore.
He pushes her up against the wall, and at once she feels his mouth on hers, his tongue forcing its way past her lips, his hands squeezing the softness of her breasts.
It hurts, and she pushes him away. "Not so rough." Her breath seems to thunder in the darkness.
"No time." She hears the tension in his voice. A male tension, filled at the same time with desire and anxiety. And she begins to have second thoughts. Is this really how she wants her first time to be? A few sordid moments snatched in the dark of a filthy boatshed?
"No." She pushes him aside and steps away, turning toward the window and a breath of air. If they hurry there is still time to get back before twelve.
She sees the dark shape drift out of the shadows almost at the same moment she feels it. Soft and cold and heavy. She lets out an involuntary cry.
"For God's sake, Ceit!" Uilleam comes after her, frustration added now to desire and anxiety, and his feet slide away from under him, for all the world as if he has stepped on ice.
He lands heavily on his elbow and a pain shoots through his arm. "Shit!" The floor is wet with diesel. He feels it soaking through the seat of his trousers. It is on his hands. Without thinking, he fumbles for the cigarette lighter in his pocket. There just isn't enough damned light in here. Only as he spins the wheel with his thumb, sparking the flame, does it occur to him that he is in imminent danger of turning himself into a human torch. But by then it is too late. The light is sudden and startling in the dark. He braces himself. But there is no ignition of diesel fumes, no sudden flash of searing flame. Just an image so profoundly shocking it is impossible at first to comprehend.”

Uit Let me stay for a day

“Wednesday, 2 May 2001, Amsterdam
I checked out of the hotel at 11 o' clock and decided to walk to the first highway exit, where I wanted to get off to Amsterdam. On the way to the off ramp I already walked with a sign saying "Amsterdam" along the busy streets - of course with a big smile on my mouth - and one car stopped behind me at 11.30.
The man talked about the change of hitch-hiking along the years. Nowadays Dutch students have a free public transport card that can take you anywhere in the country where you want to go. That has stopped the real hitching along the road. The most hitches he sees along the road are third-generation hippies, looking terrible, half-drunk and smelling like weed.
He said I am an example of modern times hitch-hikers: just looking a bit more decent. Even while my goal is very different than most hitchers. He brought me to the gas station of Muiden, close to Amsterdam. Where I waited no more than 15 minutes when the driver of an old-timer Citroën invited me for a ride. He had to go to the Wibautstraat (one of the main streets in Amsterdam) and that was exactly where I had to be!
Life is being lucky.
I only had to walk one block to get to the address of Caroline, who had invited me over. The time was about 1 pm and I already knew that she'd get home from work after 5, so that meant sightseeing for me.
Of course I'd been to the city of Amsterdam before, so it doesn't impress me as much as a city of Paris or Brussels will do. I walked to the Oosterpark - one of the green lines in the crowded city, where I lay down in the sun on the green grass and decided to take a nap, because the night on the radio didn't really gave me a steady night."

Uit: Het menselijk lichaam (Vertaald door Mieke Geuzebroek en Pietha de Voogd)

`Misschien kunt u eens naar me kijken.
Egitto antwoordt verstrooid: 'Komt u vanmiddag maar even langs. Ik zal u een tranquillizer voorschrijven."

Uit: Splendid's Hotel (Vertaald door Mark Spitzer)

“JEAN
My trigger is sensitive and my wrist is tired. You'll remember that I don't like cops.
In making you a prisoner, I took a hostage.
THE POLICEMAN
I've proven myself. I earned my weapon.
JEAN
Who gave it to you? Riton? Did he untie you too?
THE POLICEMAN
Ask him that. But as I disappear, remember... I shoot straight, even through a door.
(He leaves, aiming at Jean and Scott. A few seconds of silence)
JEAN
(to Scott, who prevents him from firing at the door) Are you defying me? Or are you leaving me? Are you with Riton also? Scott, cut through the white salon, the south corridor, the suite, the three rooms... before the cop reaches... the stairway.
SCOTT
(sarcastically) Are you afraid he won't join up with Riton again?
JEAN
The stairway! If he descends a single landing, a single story, he'll get away, he'll escape us, and then his pals will know everything. He knows too much.
SCOTT
He won't leave.
JEAN
Why not? No one's been able to keep his mouth shut. He knows the American gal died in our hands.”

Uit: It's Not Over: Getting Beyond Tolerance, Defeating Homophobia, and Winning True Equality

“They’re using these sort of coded appeals to say to people two things: One, the biggest threat in your life is not concentrated wealth, it’s minorities; and two, government coddles minorities, and all these government assistance programs, it’s all about giveaways to minorities—oppose them—government is taking your taxes and giving it to undeserving minorities.”
(...)

“Instead, they borrowed a page from the same playbook they have used for decades. Now, when they want to talk about gay people, Republicans discuss a threat to “religious liberties” or “religious freedom.” And if these terms are the raw ingredients of dog whistling, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is the test kitchen where the recipes are developed.”
(…)

“This recalibration of the “victim–oppressor dynamic” is exactly what Christian conservatives, with the aid of right-wing bloggers, put into motion after Brendan Eich resigned as CEO of Mozilla. They cast him as a victim of ruthless, organized gay activist groups that were taking away his “religious liberties”—a claim that could not be further from the truth. Too many gay opinion makers fell right into the trap, accepting this reframing, becoming fearful, and running away, fretting about the “optics” rather than challenging the accusation for what it was: a vicious lie and a deception, part of a plot to recast enemies of LGBT equality as victims while they trample hard-won rights. These LGBT thought leaders spoke for all of us who have been overcome with victory blindness and have impulsively reverted to covering our anger and our conviction. And we can’t let that happen again.”

Uit: Nada (Vertaald door Mitchell Abidor)

“Treuffais had bought several morning newspapers, and at around 4:30 he went downstairs to get Le Monde and France-Soir, as well as a mediocre canned sauerkraut . He went back upstairs to his place. After having closed the door he saw his image in the entry-way mirror and sighed. A four day beard, red eyes, pimples, his shaggy hair, his shirt filthy and wrinkled under his jacket, on which could be seen four or five new cigarette burns. He put the sauerkraut away on the kitchen shelf, went to get the old Motorola from his bedroom and settled into the bathroom with the radio and the papers. He ran the water for a bath and flipped thorough the papers. Hardly any new information. Treuffais had already learned from the radio that texts had arrived at the newspapers and press agencies mailed during the night from Paris, signed by the Nada Group, taking credit for the kidnapping of the ambassador and demanding the publication of a manifesto across the country and the payment by the state of a ransom of $200,000. The state had 48 hours to respond, that is until noon Monday. If it refused the ambassador would be executed. If it accepted, the manifesto was to immediately appear in the press and be read over the radio and television. And new instructions would be sent by the Nada Group concerning the paying of the ransom.
Le Monde already had summarized and analyzed the manifesto. “Its style is filthy,” the newspaper affirmed, “and the childishness of certain affirmations, of an archaic and unalloyed anarchism, would raise a smile in other circumstances. In the current situation it instead inspires disquiet, a profound fear before the nothingness gladly taken credit for by the Nada Group which so well chose its name, but which expresses itself, in its text and in its actions, in an unjustifiable manner.’
The bathtub was full. Treuffais turned off the faucets, took off his clothes, and got into the water. He continued his reading, allowing the filth to dissolve slowly. According to the editorialist of France-Soir the terrorists of the Nada Group followed the example of the Tupamaros in demanding the publication of their manifesto. But, underlined the editorialist, the Tupamaros’ example isn’t an example to be followed, especially in France, which is democratic and isn’t underdeveloped. If violent protest has, alas, become part of our ways, political terrorism meets neither the needs nor the desires of the population. The Nada Group should already begin to realize this, and the editorialist hoped that reason would carry the day.”

Uit: Skirt and the Fiddle

“This was the band's "comeback" tour. VOLSTAGG RETURNS.
I couldn't remember any of their songs. As fax as I knew, they had only one hit. Yet I guess that was all it took for a comeback. And, judging by the horde, they bat) been missed.could not fucking &lieve the union. Someone (my agent) would pay for this, dearly .
Four Sasquatches manning Gate E. I called one over, gave him my line. He asked for ID. I shook my head. Paus-ing, he thought about it, dien gave in — clearly swayed by my suit and complexion. He opened the gate and shoved me in a corner. I stood near the wall as the ranks filed by.
Soon, somebody called me a nigger. Turning, I tried to single him out. But they all looked the same. Lost in Cumberland. How much langer, 0 Lord, how long?
I went back to watching the Sasquatches confiscate pipe after bundle after Carolina boot knife. Then, more directly, it happened again: "GET GONE, COON!"— from a grub in fatigues.
And to think there was talk of sterilizing pit bug, . .
I looked at my watch, thinking, One more minute. "Pardon," came a voice. "Are you Charles Evans?" I turned. He was small, balding, corporate. "Yeah," I said. "Get me out of here." Sorry." He looked off. "Come with me." Weaving, I followed his lead through the crowd. He drew a rope at the top of some stairs. We dropped the flight to a stage-room door. A techie opened up. I stepped inside. Three other union gimps were huddled in the corner. None familiar —to me or each other. We were given introductions with a careless nod, then handed our scores and told to prepare.
So, the long and short of it was this: not only were the fout- of us, as total strangers, expected to play before menty thousand cases of arrested development off the cuff, we we re actually there to play Volstagg's music —unaccompanied, with-out the band, as the opening act —á la Johann Sebastian Bach: baroque renditions of shit-awful death epics.”

Der Fischer

An jedem Tag
Seit er an einer uralten Küste
Geboren wurde
Hat er das Meer gesehen
Wie eine Silbertafel
Am Abend

Die Sonne wird
Wie eine leuchtende Apfelsine
Von einem Gipfel gespalten
Während Störche sich verziehen
Und die Fische tauchen auf
Gutenachtzuküssen

In jeder Nacht
Hat er geträumt
Von den Bildern
Während der Mond die Stille sang
Und die Bäume von der Welt
Im Dunkeln flüsterten

Jedes Jahr hat er gelebt
Um diese Bilder
Weiterzugeben
Um mit jemanden
Diese unendlichen Augenblicke
Zu teilen.

Das so vollkommen Unnötige

Heute will ich endlich

Heute will ich endlich

Gewillig drinkt men de goedkope wijn
