Zij draagt Lars in haar armen.

‘k Had allebei m’n oogjes dichtgedaan.

Doch déze observatie hield ik vóór me,
en prees het zicht. Kwam thuis op het geluid.

Werksstudent

Uit:The Sweetest Dream

“An early evening in autumn, and the street below was a scene of small yellow lights that suggested intimacy, and people already bundled up for winter. Behind her the room was filling with a chilly dark, but nothing could dismay her: she was floating, as high as a summer cloud, as happy as a child who had just learned to walk. The reason for this uncharacteristic lightness of heart was a telegram from her former husband, Johnny Lennox – Comrade Johnny – three days ago. SIGNED CONTRACT FOR FIDEL FILM ALL ARREARS AND CURRENT PAYMENT TO YOU SUNDAY.
Today was Sunday. The ‘all arrears’ had been due, she knew, to something like the fever of elation she was feeling now: there was no question of his paying ‘all’ which by now must amount to so much money she no longer bothered to keep an account. But he surely must be expecting a really big sum to sound so confident. Here a little breeze – apprehension? – did reach her. Confidence was his – no, she must not say stock-in -trade, even if she had often in her life felt that, but could she remember him ever being outfaced by circumstances, even discomfited?
On a desk behind her two letters lay side by side, like a lesson in life’s improbable but so frequent dramatic juxtapositions. One offered her a part in a play. Frances Lennox was a minor, steady, reliable actress, and had never been asked for anything more. This part was in a brilliant new play, a two-hander, and the male part would be taken by Tony Wilde who until now had seemed so far above her she would never have had the ambition to think of her name and his side by side on a poster. And he had asked for her to be offered the part. Two years ago they had been in the same play, she as usual in a serviceable smaller role. At the end of a short run – the play had not been a success – she had heard on the closing night as they tripped back and forth taking curtain calls, ‘Well done, that was very good.’
Smiles from Olympus, she had thought that, while knowing he had shown signs of being interested in her. But now she had been watching herself burst into all kinds of feverish dreams, not exactly taking herself by surprise, since she knew only too well how battened down she was, how well under control was her erotic self, but she could not prevent herself imagining her talent for fun (she supposed she still had it?) even for reckless enjoyment, being given room, while at the same time showing what she could do on the stage, if given a chance. But she would not be earning much money, in a small theatre, with a play that was a gamble. Without that telegram from Johnny she could not have afforded to say yes.”

Rejected (Fragment)

And He hid my soul at last
In a place of stones and (ears,
Where the hours like days went past
And the days went by like years.

And after many days
That which had slept awoke,
And desire burnt in a blaze,
And my soul went up in the smoke.

And we crept away from the place
And would not look behind,
And the angel that hides his face
Was crouched on the neck of the wind.

And I went to the shrine in the hollow
Where the lutes and the flutes were playing,
And cried : ' I am come, Apollo,
Back to thy shrine, from my straying.'

But he would have none of my soul
That was stained with blood and with tears,
That had lain in the earth like a mole,
In the place of great stones and fears.

And now I am lost in the mist
Of the things that can never be,
For I will have none of Christ
And Apollo will none of me.

Uit: Serious Sweet

“It was traditional to hate foxes, but she wasn’t sure why. She guessed it was a habit to do with guilt. They always sounded injured, if not tormented, and that could get you thinking about harms you’d done to others in your past. The foxes perhaps acted like a form of haunting by offering reminders of sin, and that was never popular. Or perhaps there was no logic involved, only free-form loathing, picking a target and sticking with it.
She enjoyed the warm din of the foxes, the bloody-and-furry and white-toothed sound—it was intense, and she appreciated intensity. This was her choice. In the same way, the Hill was her choice. The open dark had given her a cliff-top feeling as soon as she came within sight of the big skyline. It provided the good illusion that she could step off from here and go kicking into space, swimming on and up. Below her, opened and spread, were instants and chains of light apparently hung in a vast nowhere, a beautiful confusion. It was easy to assume that London’s walls and structures had proved superfluous, been let go, and that only lives, pure lives, were burning in midair, floating as stacks of heat, or color, perhaps expressions of will. What might be supporting the lives, you couldn’t tell.
Then, during the course of an hour, the sun had indeed pressed in at the east, risen, birds had woken and announced the fact, as had airplanes and buses, and the world had solidified and shut her back out. It was like a person. You meet someone at night and they won’t be the same as they will if you see them in daytime. Under the still-goldenish, powdery sky, buildings had become just buildings, recognizably Victorian in the foreground and repeating to form busy furrows, their pattern interrupted where bombs had fallen in the war. These explosive absences had then been filled with newer and usually uglier structures, or else parks. There were also areas simply left gapped. They had been damaged and then abandoned, allowed to become tiny wildernesses, gaps of forgotten cause. Rockets had hit in ’44—V-1s and V-2s. Somewhere under the current library—which wasn’t council anymore—there’d been a shattered building and people in pieces, dozens of human beings torn away from life in their lunch hour. It didn’t show. There was a memorial plaque if you noticed, but other human beings, not obviously in pieces, would generally walk past it and give it no thought.”

Parmi vos longs cheveux d'or fluide et léger,

As in a boundless sea in darkening fields and meadows

As in a boundless sea in darkening fields and meadows
The sunset's tristful rays fade and then sink from sight,
And in mute twilights wake, over the steppe the shadows
Creep swiftly, bringing night.

Soft sound the gophers' calls, and, ne'er the stillness waking,
Jerboas now appear - two or perhaps just one.
They ghost-like haunt the plain, great leaps across it taking,
And all at once are gone…

Youth

A whip cracks in the wood, and cattle low
And through the underbrush are heard to
Crash heavily. Leaves rustle. Snowdrops show
Their blue heads here and there. A sudden, furtive

Wind starts to blow, and ashen clouds are swept
Across the skies, a cool, fresh rain presaging…
The heart grieves and is glad that life is, strangely,
Vast like the steppe and empty like the steppe.

Mich freut es, wenn der Dichter mich versteht;

»Sondern? Um Elani?«

Dagboek van een lentemeisje

ik wilde wel vergaan
in 't licht te loore
(Gorter)

I

was zacht. Toen wilde ik verdwijnen in
de opbloeiende lentepracht.

Kil

Draaiden we platen.
Led Zeppelin. T-Rex.
Liften.

Was Fellini autobiografisch? Ongetwijfeld in zijn film Amarcord. Maar in 8½ of La Strada? Of Satyricon? Allemaal verbeelding, alles spel, verkleedpartijen, droom.

Man van rabarber

Mijn voeten zijn slepende moordmachines
van slijten en buigen
slijten en verschuiven, kraken
           slijten en vouwen en kreuken

Mijn hoofd is een plooienpot.
  een mondjesmaat gewatteerde schedel
een stormram van zorg
   een gemsbok van koppige donder

dus laat maar
ik ben een man van rabarber
een ring van stenen als een klok
rond mij neergelegd
ik ben een moederstuinen man
ik ben van vaders herfstbladeren
de bolsters van mijn broer tot naald
aaneen genaaid

          ruis

Le lac (Fragment)

" Aimons donc, aimons donc ! de l'heure fugitive,
Hâtons-nous, jouissons !
L'homme n'a point de port, le temps n'a point de rive ;
Il coule, et nous passons ! "

Sonnet VIII. To Mercy

Not always should the tear's ambrosial dew
Roll its soft anguish down thy furrowed cheek!
Not always heaven-breathed tones of suppliance meek
Beseem thee, Mercy! Yon dark Scowler view,
Who with proud words of dear-loved Freedom came--
More blasting than the mildew from the south!
And kissed his country with Iscariot mouth;
(Ah! foul apostate from his Father's fame!)
Then fixed her on the cross of deep distress,
And at safe distance marks the thirsty lance
Pierce her big side! But oh! if some strange trance
The eye-lids of thy stern-browed Sister press,
Seize, Mercy! thou more terrible the brand,
And hurl her thunderbolts with fiercer hand!

Sonnet XV. To Schiller

Schiller! that hour I would have wished to die,
If thro' the shudd'ring midnight I had sent
From the dark Dungeon of the Tower time-rent
That fearful voice, a famished Father's cry--
That in no after moment aught less vast
Might stamp me mortal! A triumphant shout
Black Horror screamed, and all her goblin rout
From the more with'ring scene diminished past.
Ah! Bard tremendous in sublimity!
Could I behold thee in thy loftier mood,
Wand'ring at eve with finely frenzied eye
Beneath some vast old tempest-swinging wood!
Awhile with mute awe gazing I would brood,
Then weep aloud in a wild ecstasy!

Sonnet XX

The piteous sobs that choke the Virgin's breath
For him, the fair betrothed Youth, who les
Cold in the narrow dwelling, or the cries
With which a Mother wails her Darling's death,
These from our Nature's common impulse spring
Unblamed, unpraised; but o'er the piled earth,
Which hides the sheeted corse of gray-haired Worth,
If droops the soaring Youth with slackened wing;
If he recall in saddest minstrelsy
Each tenderness bestowed, each truth impressed;
Such Grief is Reason, Virtue, Piety!
And from the Almighty Father shall descend
Comforts on his late Evening, whose young breast
Mourns with no transient love the aged friend.

My Father Played The Melodeon

My father played the melodeon
Outside at our gate,
There were stars in the morning east
And they danced to his music.

Across the world bogs his melodeon called
To Lennons and Callans
As I pulled on my trousers in a hurry
I knew some strange thing had happened.

Outside in the cow-house my mother
Made the music of milking,
The light of the stable-lamp was a star
And the frost of Bethlehem made it twinkle.

A water-hen screeched in the bog,
Mass-going feet
Crunched the wafer-ice on the polt-holes -
Somebody wistfully twisted a bellow's wheel.

My child-poet picked out the letters
On Time's black stone,
In silver the wonder of a Christmas townland
The winking glitter of a frosty dawn.

Cassiopea was over
Cassidy's hanging hill.
I looked and three whin bushes rode acoss
The horizon - the Three Wise Kings.

My father played the melodeon,
My mother milked the cows
And I had a prayer like a white rose pinned
On the Virgin Mary's blouse.

Come Dance with Kitty Stobling

No, no, no, I know I was not important as I moved
Through the colourful country, I was but a single
Item in the picture, the name, not the beloved.
O tedious man with whom no gods commingle.
Beauty, who has described beauty? Once upon a time
I had a myth that was a lie but it served:
Trees walking across the crest of hills and my rhyme
Cavorting on mile-high stilts and the unnerved
Crowds looking up with terror in their rational faces.
O dance with Kitty Stobling I outrageously
Cried out-of-sense to them, while their timorous paces
Stumbled behind Jove's page boy paging me.
I had a very pleasant journey, thank you sincerely
For giving me my madness back, or nearly.

Uit: The Book of Saladin

“I have not thought of our old home for many years. It is a long time now since the fire. My house, my wife, my daughter, my two-year-old grandson—all trapped inside like caged animals. If fate had not willed otherwise, I too would have been reduced to ashes. How often have I wished that I could have been there to share the agony.
These are painful memories. I keep them submerged. Yet today, as I begin to write this story, the image of that domed room where every-thing once began is strong in me again. The caves of our memory are extraordinary. Things that are long forgotten remain hidden in dark corners, suddenly to emerge into the light. I can see everything now It comes to my mind clearly, as if time itself had stopped still.
It was a cold night of the Cairo winter, in the year 1181 according to the Christian calendar. The mewing of cats was the only noise fron-the street outside. Rabbi Musa ibn Maymun, an old friend of our family as well as its self-appointed physician, had arrived at my hous on his way back from attending to the Kadi al-Fadil, who had been in disposed for several days.
We had finished eating and were sipping our mint tea in silence, sur rounded by thick, multi-coloured woollen rugs, strewn with cushion covered in silk and satin. A large round brazier, filled with charcoal, glowed in the centre of the room, giving off gentle waves of heat. Reclining on the floor, we could see the reflection of the fire in the dome above, making it appear as if the night sky itself were alight.
I was reflecting on our earlier conversation. My friend had revealed an angry and bitter side, which had both surprised and reassured me. Our saint was human just like anyone else. The mask was intended for outsiders. We had been discussing the circumstances which had compelled Ibn Maymun to flee Andalus and to start on his long fifteen-year journey from Cordoba to Cairo. Ten of those years had been spent in the Maghrebian city of Fez. There the whole family had been obliged to pretend that they were followers of the Prophet of Islam. Ibn Maymun was angered at the memory. It was the decep-tion that annoyed him. Dissembling went against his instincts.
I had never heard him talk in this fashion before. I noticed the trans-formation that came over him. His eyes were gleaming as he spoke, his hand clenched into a fist. I wondered whether it was this experi-ence that had aroused his worries about religion, especially about a religion in power, a faith imposed on the point of a sword. I broke the silence.”

BOLIVÁR (Fragment)

Yet, how many conspired against you, Bolivár,
How many traps did they not set for you to fall into and vanish,
One man, above all, a rogue, a snake, a native of
    Philippoupolis.
But what was that to you, like a tower you stood firm, upright,
    before Acongagua’s terror,
Holding a mighty cudgel and wielding it above your head.
The bald-headed condors, unafraid of the carnage and smoke of
battle, took fright and flew up in terrified flocks,
And the llamas hurled themselves down the mountain slopes,
dragging, as they fell, a cloud of earth and rocks.
And into the dark of Tartarus your enemies disappeared, lay
    low.
(When the marble arrives, the best from Alabanda, I’ll sprinkle
my brow with Blachernae’s holy water,
I’ll use all my craft to hew your stance, to erect the statue of a
    new Kouros in Sikynos’ mountains,
Not forgetting, of course, to engrave on its base that famous
    “Hail, passer-by”.)

And here it should above all be stressed that Bolivar was never
afraid, never, as they say, “lost his nerve”,
Not even at the most murderous hour of battle, nor in the bitter
    gloom of unavoidable treachery.
They say he knew beforehand, with unimaginable precision, the
day, the hour, even the second: the moment,
Of the Great Battle that was for him alone,
In which he himself would be army and enemy, both
vanquished and victor, triumphant hero and sacrificial
    victim.
(And the lofty spirit of such as Cyril Loukaris reared within
    him,
How he calmly eluded the despicable plots of the Jesuits and
    that wretched man from Philippoupolis!)

After the Orchard: “Souvenir de Mauve” (fragment)

How can I thank Mauve--his early faith, beyond
what a cousin owes. A master of grey, he belongs to the North--brooding,
always the lowering sky, yet I would remember him
brightly for all the grief. And the pretense. Hypocrite!--
"A vicious character," he called me that day on the dunes--what he meant
but lacked courage to put into words was he would not set foot in the home
I had made with--say it as he would--a whore. How the bourgeois
revile those who ply their trade plainly, and revile
the warmth of two bodies, deny love could kindle between two
when one walked the streets to put food on the table.
For years
I watched them, remote and beautiful, and somehow sad
while beyond sadness. "Sorrow" I called a litho of Sien--that's the word.
And what if it was after rejection, no less for her than for me,
I admit my portion. "No, never," the other had said--why should I
believe it? Love, I'd thought, will always will out, as these blossoms
mastering snow and the mistral inch into sun and explode.
And she, pregnant when I found her and again when I left--who knew
the father? Does that deny love? There's a spark
beyond spirit that draws us, the joy come dawn of a body
drawn full-length beside you, its warmth more than the thin
rays of sun that fall on a quilt in The Hague. I've never denied it--
but there was affection, our small intimate moments, the touches
a husband I'm sure reserves for his wife, many though his mistresses be.

Boze Fransen slachtten in 1893 tientallen Italiaanse gastarbeiders af.

The Mother Of Zebedee's Children (George MacDonald)

Bij de 29e zondag door het jaar

 2186929-c31657daacc3f89b8a2cd8703a63335b.jpg

The Mother Of Zebedee's Children

She knelt, she bore a bold request,
Though shy to speak it out:
Ambition, even in mother's breast,
Before him stood in doubt.

'What is it?' 'Grant thy promise now,
My sons on thy right hand
And on thy left shall sit when thou
Art king, Lord, in the land.'

'Ye know not what ye ask.' There lay
A baptism and a cup
She understood not, in the way
By which he must go up.

Her mother-love would lift them high
Above their fellow-men;
Her woman-pride would, standing nigh,
Share in their grandeur then!

Would she have joyed o'er prosperous quest,
Counted her prayer well heard,
Had they, of three on Calvary's crest,
Hung dying, first and third?

She knoweth neither way nor end:
In dark despair, full soon,
She will not mock the gracious friend
With prayer for any boon.

Higher than love could dream or dare
To ask, he them will set;
They shall his cup and baptism share,
And share his kingdom yet!

They, entering at his palace-door,
Will shun the lofty seat;
Will gird themselves, and water pour,
And wash each other's feet;

Then down beside their lowly Lord
On the Father's throne shall sit:
For them who godlike help afford
God hath prepared it.
