Angel

By gates of Eden, Angel, gentle,

Shone with his softly drooped head,

And Demon, gloomy and resentful

Over the hellish crevasse flapped.

The spirit of qualm and negation

Looked at another one – of good,

And fire of the forced elation

First time he vaguely understood.

“I’ve seen you,” he enunciated, -

“And not in vain you’ve sent me light:

Not all in heaven I have hated,

Not all in world I have despised.”

Solitude

He's blessed, who lives in peace, that's distant

From the ignorant fobs with calls,

Who can provide his every instance

With dreams, or labors, or recalls;

To whom the fate sends friends in score,

Who hides himself by Savior's back

From bashful fools, which lull and bore,

And from the impudent ones, which wake.

To My Friends

The chain of golden days and nights

Is still your heritage from Deity,

And, still, the languid maidens’ eyes

Are turned to you as well intently.

So, play and sing, friends of my years!

Lose very quickly passing evening,

And, at your heedless joy and singing,

I will be smiling through my tears.

Uit: Lock and Key

"And finally," Jamie said as he pushed the door open, "we come to the main event. Your room."

I was braced for pink. Ruffles or quilting, or maybe even appliqué. Which was probably kind of unfair, but then again, I didn't know my sister anymore, much less her decorating style. With total strangers, it had always been my policy to expect the worst. Usually they -- and those that you knew best, for that matter -- did not disappoint.

Instead, the first thing I saw was green. A large, high window, on the other side of which were tall trees separating the huge backyard from that of the house that backed up to it. Everything was big about where my sister and her husband, Jamie, lived -- from the homes to the cars to the stone fence you saw first thing when you pulled into the neighborhood itself, made up of boulders that looked too enormous to ever be moved. It was like Stonehenge, but suburban. So weird.

It was only as I thought this that I realized we were all still standing there in the hallway, backed up like a traffic jam. At some point Jamie, who had been leading this little tour, had stepped aside, leaving me in the doorway. Clearly, they wanted me to step in first. So I did.“

Uit: Flowers in the Attic

„Truly, when I was very young, way back in the Fifties, I believed all of life would be like one long and perfect summer day. After all, it did start out that way. There''s not much I can say about our earliest childhood except that it was very good, and for that, I should be everlastingly grateful. We weren''t rich, we weren''t poor. If we lacked some necessity, I couldn''t name it; if we had luxuries, I couldn''t name those, either, without comparing what we had to what others had, and nobody had more or less in our middle-class neighborhood. In other words, short and simple, we were just ordinary, run-of-the-mill children. Our daddy was a P.R. man for a large computer manufacturing firm located in Gladstone, Pennsylvania: population, 12,602. He was a huge success, our father, for often his boss dined with us, and bragged about the job Daddy seemed to perform so well. "It''s that all-Amarican, wholesome, devastatingly good-looking face and charming manner that does them in. Great God in heaven, Chris, what sensible person could resist a fella like you?" Heartily, I agreed with that. Our father was perfect. He stood six feet two, weighed 180 pounds, and his hair was thick and flaxen blond, and waved just enough to be perfect; his eyes were cerulean blue and they sparkled with laughter, with his great zest for living and having fun. His nose was straight and neither too long nor too narrow, nor too thick. He played tennis and golf like a pro and swam so much he kept a suntan all through the year. He was always dashing off on airplanes to California, to Florida, to Arizona, or to Hawaii, or even abroad on business, while we were left at home in the care of our mother.“

Uit: Journey into the mind’s eye

The Traveller was from Moscow, 'a Muscovite' he said, but later I was to learn he was of Tartar blood; and unmistakably, the Ta-tze or Mongol hordes had stamped their imprint on his strange countenance. The dark slit eyes, the pointed ears, the Chinese-bald skull, the slight, yet cruel smile which sometimes passed across his usually impassive face — all these spoke of Asia, where he roamed, in spirit, and in fact.

Whenever he came to Europe, he would visit us, and then, reaching my nursery, sit beside the fire, his huge shadow spread-eagled —- a double-headed Russian eagle to me — across the rosy wallpaper. Shrugging and gesticulating with odd, unexpected movements, his long, bent-back fingers cracking, the nail of one little finger sprouted to astonishing length, he would spin a marvellous web of countries, cities, people and things, conjuring for me a world of shimmering images.

Every Easter, I received the lovely painted eggs of Russian tradition; some were in papier mâché, elaborately decorated with the Imperial eagle or some regimental insignia; some were gaily painted with peasant designs. When I was six he had sent a tiny one in dark blue enamel with a ribbon of pin's-head diamonds around it, a lavish Fabergé toy. 'Diamonds for a child! It doesn't seem natural does it?' sniffed Nanny, putting it out of reach, until my mother appropriated it for her dressing-table, where it hung beside the looking-glass, on a blue ribbon.“

„Far, far from the line of the railroads which run through the Bialorus (a part of Poland around the city of Mohileff which now belongs to Russia), far from even the navigable River Dzwina, in one of the most remote corners of the country, amidst quiet, large, level fields--still existing in some parts of Europe--between two sandy roads which disappear into the depths of a great forest, there is a group of gray houses of different sizes standing so closely together that anyone looking at them would say that they had been seized by some great fright and had crowded together in order to be able to exchange whispers and tears.

This is Szybow, a town inhabited by Israelites, almost exclusively, with the exception of a small street at the end of the place in which, in a few houses, live a few very poor burghers and very quiet

old retired officials.

It is the only street that is quiet, and the only street in which flowers bloom in summer. In the other streets no flowers bloom, and they are dreadfully noisy. There the people talk and move about continually, industriously, passionately, within the houses and in the narrow dark alleys called streets, and in the round, comparatively large market-place in the centre of the town, around which there are numerous doors of stinking small shops.“

Mein Lied ertönt, ein Liebespsalm

Mein Lied ertönt, ein Liebespsalm,

beginnt der Tag zu sinken,

und wenn das Moos, der welke Halm

Tauperlen heimlich trinken.

Mein Lied ertönt voll Wanderlust,

wenn wir die Welt durchwallen,

nur auf der Puszta weitem Plan

kann froh mein Sang erschallen.

Mein Lied ertönt voll Liebe auch,

wenn Heidestürme toben;

wenn sich befreit zum letzten Hauch

des Bruders Brust gehoben!

Uit: LIFE AND LETTERS OF HARRIET BEECHER STOWE

„Harriet Beecher was born in Litchfield, June 14, 1811. This town was first settled in 1720 in a pleasant high country among hills, lakes, and valleys. Evidently intelligent men founded also this settlement, because they were stirring patriots during the war of the revolution, and were visited by Washington, Lafayette, Rochambeau, and many of the principal officers of the army. One of the chief heroes of that time lived to be a parishioner of Dr. Beecher. Also during his life in Litchfield and helping to make the town famous, were, among others, Governor Oliver Wolcott, Jr., a member of Washington's cabinet, John Pierpont the poet, and Judge Reeve. These men became intimate friends of Dr. Beecher; especially Judge Reeve, who had founded in Litchfield a celebrated law school, to which young men were sent from nearly every State in the union. The Reverend Mr. Huntington, who preceded Dr. Beecher, wrote of Litchfield: "It is a delightful village on a fruitful hill, richly endowed with schools, both professional and scientific, with its remarkable governors and judges, with its learned lawyers and senators, and representatives both in the National and State departments, and with a population enlightened and respectable. Litchfield was now in its glory."

J'ai peu de voix pour moi, mais je les ai sans brigue ;
Ne les va point quêter de réduit en réduit ;
Mon travail sans appui monte sur le théâtre ;
J'arrache quelquefois trop d'applaudissements ;
Par d'illustres avis je n'éblouis personne ;
Je satisfais ensemble et Peuple et Courtisans ;
Et mes vers en tous lieux sont mes seuls partisans ;
Par leur seule beauté ma plume est estimée ;

TWIST

                                Voor Rafael Méndez

In het midden van het ravijn

blinken als vissen

de messen uit Albacete,

mooi van vijandelijk bloed.

Een scherp kaartspellicht

knipt in het felle groen

onstuimige paarden

en ruiterprofielen uit.

In de kruin van een olijfboom

wenen twee oude vrouwen.

De stier van de twist

stormt tegen de muren op.

Zwarte engelen brachten

zakdoeken en sneeuwwater mee.

Engelen met grote vleugels

van messen uit Albacete.

Juan Antonio uit Montilla

rolt dood de helling af,

zijn lichaam vol irissen

en granaatappels op zijn slapen.

Nu bestijgt hij een kruis van vuur

op weg naar de dood.

Vergezeld van een guardia civil

komt de rechter langs de olijfgaarden.

Glibberig bloed kermt

sprakeloos slangenlied.

Heren van de guardia civil:

hier gebeurde het oude verhaal.

Vier Romeinen en vijf Carthagers

vonden hier de dood.

De avond dol van vijgenbomen

en van hitsige geluiden

bezwijmt op de gewonde

dijen van de ruiters.

En zwarte engelen vlogen

door de avondlucht.

Engelen met lange vlechten

en harten van olie.

SINT GABRIËL (Sevilla)

                          Voor D. Agustin Viñuales

I

Een knappe jongeling, rank als riet,

brede schouders, slanke taille,

huid van een nachtelijke appel,

droeve mond en grote ogen,

pezen van hitsig zilver,

doolt door de verlaten straat.

Zijn lakleren schoenen

vertrappen de dahlia's van de wind,

op het dubbele ritme, het lied

van kort en hemels verdriet.

Langs de hele zeekust

staat geen palm die hem evenaart,

noch gekroonde keizer

noch rijzende ster.

Als hij zijn hoofd buigt

naar zijn borst van jaspis,

zoekt de nacht vlakten

om neer te knielen.

De gitaren klinken alleen

voor de Aartsengel Gabriël,

temmer van duifjes

en vijand van treurwilgen.

Sint Gabriël: het kindje weent

in de buik van zijn moeder.

Vergeet niet dat de zigeuners

jou je kledij schonken.

Annuntiata van de Wijzen,

sjofel gekleed maar uitverkoren,

opent de deur voor de ster

die voorbijkwam in haar straat.

De Aartsengel Sint Gabriël

tussen lelie en glimlach,

achterkleinkind van de Giralda,

bracht haar een bezoek.

In zijn geborduurde vest

trillen verborgen krekels.

De sterren van de nacht

veranderden in klokbloemen.

Sint Gabriël: Ziehier

drie nagels van vreugde.

Je schittering opent jasmijnen

op mijn gloeiend gezicht.

God zegent je, Annuntiata.

Verrukkelijke Moriaanse.

Je zal een zoon baren mooier

dan de halmen van de wind.

O, Sint Gabriël, mijn oogappel!

Mijn allerliefste Gabriël!

Je neer te zetten op een stoel

van anjers, dat is mijn droom.

God zegent je, Annuntiata,

sjofel gekleed maar uitverkoren.

Op zijn borst zal je zoon

een maanvlek en drie wonden dragen.

O, Sint Gabriël wat schitter je!

Liefste Gabriël van mijn hart!

Diep in mijn borsten

welt al de lauwe melk.

God zegent je, Annuntiata.

Moeder van honderd koningshuizen.

Dor fonkelen je ogen,

als ruiterlandschappen.

Het kindje zingt in de schoot

van de verbaasde Annunciata.

Drie groene amandelkogels

trillen in zijn stemmetje.

Sint Gabriël klom al

op een ladder ten hemel.

De sterren van de nacht

veranderden in immortellen.

„In a broad valley, at the foot of a sloping hillside, beside a clear bubbling stream, Tom was building a house.

The walls were already three feet high and rising fast. The two masons Tom had engaged were working steadily in the sunshine, their trowels going scrape, slap and then tap, tap while their labourer sweated under the weight of the big stone blocks. Tom's son Alfred was mixing mortar, counting aloud as he scooped sand on to a board. There was also a carpenter, working at the bench beside Tom, carefully shaping a length of beech-wood with an adze.

Alfred was fourteen years old, and tall like Tom. Tom was a head higher than most men, and Alfred was only a couple of inches less, and still growing. They looked alike, too: both had light brown hair and greenish eyes with brown flecks. People said they were a handsome pair. The main difference between them was that Tom had a curly brown beard, whereas Alfred had only a fine blond fluff. The hair on Alfred's head had been that colour once, Tom remembered fondly. Now that Alfred was becoming a man, Tom wished he would take a more intelligent interest in his work, for he had a lot to learn if he was to be a mason like his father; but so far Alfred remained bored and baffled by the principles of building.“

„It was when she started stripping that everyone realized something was wrong. This was an official White House event. A somewhat boring, completely respectable cruise on the Potomac River to thank everyone in the West Wing for the hard work that had won the election. But it was no longer boring.

Until the woman whipped off her tailored black jacket to reveal a star-spangled bra and a surprisingly elaborate dragon tattoo, the only remarkable thing about this cruise was that it was nineteen months late. The celebratory boat ride had been promised long ago, in the first month of our new administration, but no one minded that the business of running the country had continuously delayed its actual launch. Victory was prize enough—who needed a cruise?

I tore my eyes away from the increasingly explicit show to scan the crowd for RG. He'd gone below deck to take a call from President Wye, and I was relieved that he still seemed to be there, unaware of these antics. He was the vice president, and as a member of the White House staff, one of my duties was to protect him from public embarrassment whenever possible. That job had become significantly harder in the last thirty seconds.“

„HE STOOD THERE AND WAITED. He was good at that. There was no hurry. There was plenty of time. He always had time. He was a punctual and polite person, and that was why he was standing there, buying a gift for his hostess. Politeness was an emotion- could one call it an emotion, he wondered? that was how he regarded it, certainly-an emotion that he both feared and understood.

There was only one woman in front of him in the off-licence, and she was certainly in no hurry either. She had not even got round to asking for anything yet, because she was too busy telling the man behind the counter about her granddaughter. Two weeks old, this child was, and the lady had just finished knitting her a pram-cover in stripes of white and blue: it didn't matter that it was blue and not pink, the daughter had said, she didn't like pink anyway. The man behind the counter was interested in the story: not merely polite, but interested. One can tell the difference. The woman was short and broad and she was wearing bedroom slippers. What raffish districts of London his friends inhabited: NW1, this was, with all its smart contrasts. They depressed him unbearably, the well-arranged gulfs and divisions of life, the frivolity with which his friends took in these contrasts, the pleasure they took in such abrasions. It appalled him, the complacency with which such friends would describe the advantages of living in a mixed area. As though they licenced seedy old ladies and black men to walk their streets, teaching their children of poverty and despair, as their pet hamsters and guinea pigs taught them of sex and death. He thought of these things, sadly.“

“Oh, dear, oh, dear!" said Henry Clare.

His sister glanced in his direction.

"They are pecking the sick one. They are angry because it is ill."

"Perhaps it is because they are anxious," said Megan, looking at the hens in the hope of discerning this feeling.

"It will soon be dead," said Henry, sitting on a log with his hands on his knees. "It must be having death- pangs now."

Another member of the family was giving his attention to the fowls. He was earnestly thrusting cake through the wire for their entertainment. When he dropped a piece he picked it up and put it into his own mouth, as though it had been rendered unfit for poultry's consumption. His elders appeared to view his attitude either in indifference or sympathy.

"What are death-pangs like?" said Henry, in another tone.

"I don't know," said his sister, keeping her eyes from the sufferer of them. "And I don't think the hen is having them. It seems not to know anything."

Henry was a tall, solid boy of eight, with rough, dark hair, pale, wide eyes, formless, infantine features, and something vulnerable about him that seemed inconsistent with himself.“

David Hare, Otto F. Walter, Spalding Gray, Christy Brown, Alifaa Rifaat

“To give you the idea: I’ve noticed, among my friends and acquaintances, that I am, for some reason, one of the few people who positively looks forward to the speeches at weddings. I’d go further. For me, they’re the best part. Perhaps you may think me a cold fish when I admit that I have sometimes watched unmoved as the ring was slipped onto the finger, or as the first kiss was taken. (Priests always seem to be saying ‘Not yet.’) But I have never failed to feel a thrill of genuine anticipation when someone calls for silence and rolls out the magic words: ‘Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking’. In one heart at least, the announcement does not cause a sinking. Far from it. Part of my interest is clearly professional. I am, after all, a playwright, and there is nothing more revealing of character than when a proud father or a jealous ex-lover acting as best man is forced to rise to their feet and ‘offer a few words’. Yes, life is theatre, and the rituals which make private matters public are specially delicious. But I also love the prospect that, for once, somebody’s spool is going to be allowed to run and run. Mark it down as optimism, but I cannot help feeling — at least before they speak — that the longer someone goes on, the more you are likely to learn.”

Uit: Der Stumme

"Stummer, fuhr Breitenstein fort, wie ist das. Du hast's ge- gehört. Klar? Gehört, und das Gericht will das wissen. Das Gericht will wissen, wo du dieses Kanisterpaket versteckt hast. Los, zeigen. ...

„Then there was a surprise. About two weeks after that, Kathie, my wife, gave me a present of a trip to Ireland for the whole family. Kathie's always coming up with these crazy trips. I remember she took us to the Ice Hotel up in Quebec City where you pay three hundred dollars a night to sleep on a block of ice. So Ireland was cushy. It was a rainy version of the Ice Hotel, I suppose. A little more whimsical, and rainy, and not frozen. I'd been six times before and wanted to go back. It made me laugh in a way that the United States doesn't. We had rainy times but good times. In spite of the rain it was a jolly place. I can remember Kathie and me riding bikes in the rain for hours and then coming upon this Irishman leaning against his bicycle with a golf hat on or whatever they wear, and he said, "How are you doing?" I said, "It's just awful weather, it's just awful," and he said, "No, it's not. It hasn't gotten cold yet."

So I like them; they're optimistic and philosophical. They're not industrialized, really --there was no industrial revolution -- so they drive pretty haphazardly. They don't have a great relationship to machinery, to say the least. There's a lot of banging around and the roads are very narrow, and they just get in their cars and go, you know they just put the pedal to the metal and they're going everywhere, in all directions.“

Sunday Visit

We finally found him

curled up in the chair like a many-wrinkled shell

staring blindly out at nothing

among a gathering of imbecilic fossils

his one good eye fastening fiercely onto life

the hair still sturdy though silver under the old cloth cap.

We finally found him

through all that terrible labyrinth of grey concrete cells

quietly rounding out his days

alone in a morass of moronic camaraderie

his doomed cellmates snoozing and snoring all around

and he with his one good eye defying the shadows.

The tears came then

not soft, but real

the tears of a real man broken by life

groping wildly with gnarled fingers at the straws of life

in that awful room of no life

and the television set blaring forth its banalities

drowning whatever words of comfort our futile tongues could offer.

I had no words for him

no words to span the heartbreak of years

when Samson-like he had stood between us and chaos

bringing to us the small rare trinkets of his love.

I had for him only whiskey

the old bitter gift

the poor tribute of one poorer in spirit

than that jaded near-blind half-deaf soul reclining so tamely

in a wicker chair

in a ward of fearful paralysing resignation

a ward full of already dead people

sleeping as the television blared.

Yet the hand that gripped mine spelled out love

and the raw lovely courage of that old landscaped face

put my feeble pity to shame.
