Houden mij drijvend. Een brandende kamstaart

In de diepte is mijn verspieder.

Mijn weer met bezemen gekeerd huis

Beeft van heugenis. Schedelbeen sluit zijn naden hechter

En versteent. Ik slaap op spijkers,

Naakt, holhoofdig en gereed.

Saturday Night

The neon light, of the "Open all night",

Was just in time replaced by

The magic appearance of a new day-while

A melancholic Reno was crawling on his back

Just in front of the supermarket door-way, child

Hey girl, on a cold summernight

As we stood on the corner,

As a man passed by and asked us

What we were doing, what we need

As he pointed his big fat finger

To the people hangin’ round at the corner

Of the - other side of street

Oh well

Doin' nothing, just hanging around

What do you mean doin' nothing, Sir

So we had to hit him to the ground

Doin' nothing just hanging around

His head all busted

Lookin' just a little too wise child

I just can't wait

I just can't wait for saturday night

Throw Yourself Like Seed

Shake off this sadness, and recover your spirit; sluggish you will never see the wheel of fate that brushes your heel as it turns going by, the man who wants to live is the man in whom life is abundant.

Now you are only giving food to that final pain which is slowly winding you in the nets of death, but to live is to work, and the only thing which lasts is the work; start then, turn to the work.

Throw yourself like seed as you walk, and into your own field, don't turn your face for that would be to turn it to death, and do not let the past weigh down your motion.

Leave what's alive in the furrow, what's dead in yourself, for life does not move in the same way as a group of clouds; from your work you will be able one day to gather yourself.

The Tale Of Honour

It was an honour I had not

Expected, to be sure.

The Devil asked me in and offered

Me his best liqueur.

A candle gilt his profile.

Puffing smoke rings in a haze,

With moist eyes Mephistopheles

Upon me fixed gaze.

His mien, though tinged with autumn grief,

Was proud and cheerful too.

He cried: "In vino veritas -

I shall be frank with you!

"I can no longer bear the yoke

Of cunning and deceit.

here's to my other-worldly warmth

And worldly woes we meet!

"Long, long ago I came to earth

And for a joke, you see,

Took worldly Truth to be my life

But she cuckolded me.

"My honour to avenge I vowed

In jealousy and pain.

I trampled others' honour down

But mine I've not regained.

"I thought in exploits to excel.

I died in many a fray.

Though worthy causes I upheld

No honours came my way.

"Then in the street one day I showed

A sign I had prepared.

"Here is a man without a scrap

Of honour, 'it declared.

"But, strangely, no one looked askance!

With interest I was viewed

And everywhere men doffed their hats:

'No honour? Good for you!'

"A gentleman embraced me: 'Brother,

You too?! Man alive!'

Two pretty ladies said: 'Tomorrow

Come to tea at five!'

"Amazing! Such attention rare

All did to me devote.

Kings, ministers, court ladies fair

Fond letters to me wrote.

"Behold me rolling now in gold.

A man of place and pride!

A thief, a shameless rogue - I know -

But… honoured far and wide!"

He paused, our glasses he refilled

And raised a toast with glee

As, blowing rings of smoke, he fixed

His bright green eyes on me.

Uit: Ruth

„The chapel was up a narrow street, or rather cul-de-sac, close by.  It stood on the outskirts of the town, almost in fields.  It was built about the time of Matthew and Philip Henry, when the Dissenters were afraid of attracting attention or observation, and hid their places of worship in obscure and out-of-the-way parts of the towns in which they were built.  Accordingly, it often happened, as in the present case, that the buildings immediately surrounding, as well as the chapels themselves, looked as if they carried you back to a period a hundred and fifty years ago.  The chapel had a picturesque and old world look, for luckily the congregation had been too poor to rebuild it, or new-face it, in George the Third’s time.  The staircases which led to the galleries were outside, at each end of the building, and the irregular roof and worn stone steps looked grey and stained by time and weather.  The grassy hillocks, each with a little upright headstone, were shaded by a grand old wych-elm.  A lilac bush or two, a white rose-tree, and a few laburnums, all old and gnarled enough, were planted round the chapel yard; and the casement windows of the chapel were made of heavy- leaded, diamond-shaped panes, almost covered with ivy, producing a green gloom, not without its solemnity within.  This ivy was the home of an infinite number of little birds, which twittered and warbled, till it might have been thought that they were emulous of the power of praise possessed by the human creatures within, with such earnest, long-drawn strains did this crowd of winged songsters rejoice and be glad in their beautiful gift of life.  The interior of the building was plain and simple as plain and simple could be.  When it was fitted up, oak-timber was much cheaper than it is now, so the woodwork was all of that description: but roughly hewed, for the early builders had not much wealth to spare.   The walls were whitewashed, and were  recipients of the shadows of the beauty without; on their “white plains” the tracery of the ivy might be seen, now still, now stirred by the sudden flight of some little bird.”

Make-up habe ich verachtet, ohne dabei »natürlich« auszusehen.

Uit: Death Is Now My Neighbor

“In hypothetical sentences introduced by if and referring to past time, where conditions are deemed to be unfulfilled, the verb will regularly be found in the pluperfect subjunctive, in both protasis and apodosis.

— Donet, Principles of Elementary Latin Syntax

It is perhaps unusual to begin a tale of murder with a reminder to the reader of the rules governing conditional sentences in a language that is incontrovertibly dead. In the present case, however, such a course appears not wholly inappropriate.
If (if) Chief Inspector Morse had been on hand to observe the receptionist's dress — an irregularly triangled affair in blues, grays, and reds — he might have been reminded of the uniform issued to a British Airways stewardess. More probably, though, he might not, since he had never flown on British Airways. His only flight during the previous decade had occasioned so many fears concerning his personal survival that he had determined to restrict all future travel to those statistically far more precarious means of conveyance — the car, the coach, the train, and the steamer.
Yet almost certainly the Chief Inspector would have noted, with approval, the receptionist herself, for in Yorkshire she would have been reckoned a bonny lass: a vivacious, dark-eyed woman, long-legged and well-figured; a woman-judging from her ringless, well-manicured fingers — not overtly advertising any marital commitment, and not averse, perhaps, to the occasional overture from the occasional man.
Pinned at the top left of her colorful dress was a name tag: Dawn Charles.
Unlike several of her friends (certainlyunlike Morse) she was quite content with her Christian name. Sometimes shed felt slightly dubious about it; but no longer. Out with some friends in the Bird and Baby the previous month, shed been introduced to a rather dashing, rather dishy undergraduate from Pembroke College. And when, a little later, she'd found herself doodling inconsequentially on a Burton beer mat, the young man, on observing her sinistrality, had initiated a wholly memorable conversation.“

In totaal schreef zij dertien 'Felses'.

Uit: Virgin in the Ice

„They went out together into the cold and dark of the garden, and felt on their faces the first flakes of the first snow of the season. The air was full of a drifting unease, but the fall was light and fitful here. Further south it set in heavily, borne on a north-westerly wind, dry, fine snow that turned the night into a white, whirling mist, shrouding outlines, burying paths, blown into smooth, breaking waves only to be lifted and hurled again into new shapes. Valleys filled to a treacherous level, hillsides were scoured clean. Wise men stayed within their houses, clapped to shutter and door, and stopped the chinks between the boards, where thin white fingers reached through. The first snow and the first hard frost.

All those four days since the first snow the weather had followed a fixed pattern, with brief sunshine around noon, gathering cloud thereafter, fresh snow falling late in the evening and well into the night, and always iron frost. Around Shrewsbury the snowfalls had been light and powdery, the pattern of white flakes and black soil constantly changing as the wind blew. But as Cadfael rode south the fields grew whiter, the ditches filled. The branches of trees sagged heavily towards the ground under their load, and by mid-afternoon the leaden sky was sagging no less heavily earthwards, in swags of blue-black cloud.“

Uit: Circle Is a Balloon and a Compass Both

„"The King Cobra," which was kept from the top of the charts by a ballad called "Please Don't Plead," was my last major hit. As a result, it is the song with which I am most strongly associated. Many items that I own, including my car, my favorite Zippo, and a large number of white leather jackets, have a cobra logo or insignia. The song was even featured in a series of action films starring a man named Jake Patko, whose nickname was "The Snake." Thanks principally to "The King Cobra," I made some money, though not as much as I would have made if my business manager had been honest, and I used it to buy a pair of Burger Man franchises. Those were the cornerstones of my empire, and in each of those two original stores, I hung gold-record certificates of my most famous songs. The King Cobra even got a sandwich named after it: chicken with hot sauce, because "it has bite." When I stopped being a pop singer, it bruised my ego more than I would have expected. I used to wake up in the middle of the night and sit in the living room with a guitar, trying to write something else catchy and meaningful. All that came to me was nonsense, doggerel or worse. The emotional effects lingered. My wife, Gloria, who had met me when I was famous -- she was one of the dancers on the "King Cobra" video -- was not entirely pleased to find herself suddenly married to a Burger Man franchisee, and we had some tough times that involved a period of separation and the shattering of car windows with golf clubs. Then came therapy, which did wonders. I spent seven weeks in a little office with a large woman with small glasses and emerged a more balanced man. Trivial things once set me off -- the headline news, the weather. For me, they are usually one in the same. We live in the narrow seam between two temperate zones and, as a result, consistently experience extreme weather: big thick snowflakes that the news anchors call "snowcakes," hot drops of rain. Thanks to therapy, I reached a point where the weather meant no more to me than…well, than weather. I learned to wake up, kiss my wife, hug my son, and drive to work, humming all the way. But then came this new era, in which everyone and their mother is a pop singer. Now that's unpleasant weather. You'd think that the explosion of pop singers would make it easier for me to get back in the game, but the fact is that there is no more game. To tell you how we came to this sad circumstance-as a nation, as a culture -- I will need to take a drink. I have already filled the shot glass, which is decorated with a decal of a king cobra, with whiskey. "Ready for venom," I say to no one in particular, and I kill the shot.”

Uit: The Golden Treasury

„This book in its progress has recalled often to my memory a man with whose friendship we were once honoured, to whom no region of English literature was unfamiliar, and who, whilst rich in all the noble gifts of nature, was most eminently distinguished by the noblest and the rarest,--just judgment and high-hearted patriotism. It would have been hence a peculiar pleasure and pride to dedicate what I have endeavoured to make a true national Anthology of three centuries to Henry Hallam.

But he is beyond the reach of any human tokens of love and reverence; and I desire therefore to place before it a name united with his by associations which, whilst Poetry retains her hold on the minds of

Englishmen, are not likely to be forgotten.

Your encouragement, given while traversing the wild scenery of Treryn Dinas, led me to begin the work; and it has been completed under your advice and assistance. For the favour now asked I have thus a second reason: and to this I may add, the homage which is your right as Poet,

and the gratitude due to a Friend, whose regard I rate at no common value.

Permit me then to inscribe to yourself a book which, I hope, may be found by many a lifelong fountain of innocent and exalted pleasure; a source of animation to friends when they meet; and able to sweeten solitude itself with best society,--with the companionship of the wise and the good, with the beauty which the eye cannot see, and the music only heard in silence.“
