« Voulez-vous me pardonner ?

Uit: The Bill from My Father

A week later, my father sat beside me in the east wing of Saint Joseph's Hospital, in Oxnard, waiting for an appointment with a geriatric specialist, less than pleased to be there. He wouldn't have come at all if Brian hadn't known Dr. Montrose personally and vouched for her reputation. Despite Dad's mistrust for people in the medical profession, and whatever his misgivings about two men living together, he was proud that his son had snagged himself a doctor. Brian had a degree in psychology, not medicine, but a doctor was a doctor in my father's book, and he couldn't care less if an M. or Ph. preceded the D.

He turned to face me, his glasses flashing. "I don't want you to watch me grow old."

"Believe me," I said, "there are plenty of things worse than growing old."

"Such as?"

"Such as not growing old."

For a moment we were allied in silence, remembering Bob and Gary and Ron. Their deaths were done, but their dying survived them.

"Look at it this way," I said. "We're growing old together."

"It's happening faster to me."

"No, Dad. You and I are aging at the same rate."

"Time goes faster when you're older."

"It only seems to go faster. It can't go faster for you than it does for me." No sooner had I said this than I realized that Einstein had, in fact, proven time's relativity. I forged ahead anyway. "I know this is hard for you, but there may be a medical reason for your confusion..."

"Who's confused?"

"Well, I am, for one. I've been confused by several things you've done recently. Especially your trip into the city last week. Things I've chalked up to...your temperament."

"Well, I am, for one. I've been confused by several things you've done recently. Especially your trip into the city last week. Things I've chalked up to...your temperament."

"I got news for you: having a temperament doesn't make me a bad person."

A bedraggled man in a wheelchair rolled himself into the waiting room. A thin blue tube snaked from his nostrils to a portable oxygen tank.

"Your behavior may have a physiological cause," I continued. "It could be treatable. There's no harm in talking to Dr. Montrose."

"She sure as hell won't tell me anything I couldn't tell myself."

"She might be able to suggest a new medication or changes in your regimen." I didn't mention Alzheimer's or geriatric dementia, though these possibilities must have occurred to my father, too.”

Saufen hier wieder, prügeln sich…

Saufen hier wieder, prügeln sich, jammern,

Wo die Harmonika spielt, gelben Frust.

Hinterbliebenes hat sich versammelt

Im Angedenken der Moskauer Rus'.

Auch ich selber, gesenkten Hauptes,

Spül mir die Augen mit Weinflaschen aus;

Irgendwas Böses in glasigen Blicken,

Nein! Solche sind nicht zu Boden zu treten.

Solcher Abschaum Sorgen nicht kennt.

Du, mein Rassenland, du mein Rass … sä … land...

Mein asiatischer Kontinent!

Haine nackt, gemähte Felder,
Wasserlauf bringt Nebelwolken.
Als ein Rad die stille Sonne
Hinter blaue Berge rollte.

Weg hat's Träumen angefangen,
Den man neu geebnet grade:
Er muss nicht mehr, nicht mehr lange
Auf den grauen Winter warten.

Ach, ich sah im Nebel gestern
Durch das klangerfüllte Dickicht:
Roter Mond hat sich als Füllen
Eingespannt vor unsern Schlitten.

Uit: The Golden Age

“Attendants parked cars in front and to the side of the mock-Georgian facade of the house of what would have been his brother-in-law, Blaise Delacroix Sanford, had Timothy and Blaise's half sister, Caroline Sanford, ever had time to get married in those busy years when, together, they had created a film studio that, for a time, nearly changed movie history until . . . What was the name, he wondered, of Olivia De Havilland's sister? The one who was now the lead in Rebecca.

Timothy parked at the front door. He could almost hear what's-her-name's voice over the screen: "Last night I dreamed I had gone back to Manderley"--or whatever the line was. Purest junk, of course. Timothy preferred his own "true to life" Hometown series of movies, but the public was supposed to be more at home with beautiful houses and beautiful people and a dark mystery at the heart of it all; not to mention a great fire that reveals a terrible secret. Even so, he had wanted desperately to direct Rebecca: something un-Farrellesque in every way.

The butler was since his time. "Sir?"

Timothy gave his name. Then: "Is my film crew here?"

The butler was now all attention. "Oh, yes, Mr. Farrell! This is an honor, sir. To meet you. Your camera people are setting up in the library." The drawing room was full of Washington grandees, some elected; some born in place, like Alice Roosevelt Longworth, wearing for once the wrong blue; some newly arrived from abroad now that England and France were at war with Germany. Nevertheless, for an average American like the butler, the defining, the immortalizing presence of The Movies took precedence over everything else. "Shall I show you into the library, sir?"

"No, not yet. I must say hello. . . ."

Timothy had forgotten the rapid lizardlike Washington gaze when someone new enters an important drawing room. Conversations never drop a beat and all attention remains fixed on one's group and yet the newcomer is quickly registered and placed and then set to one side, until needed. The Hollywood stare was far more honest, more like that of the doe frozen in a predator's sight line. Fortunately, Timothy's face was not absolutely familiar to anyone except Frederika Sanford, Blaise's wife, who now moved swiftly through her room filled with guests, many in military uniform, some drably American, some exotically foreign, like the embassy attaches. War or peace?”

Me ramène toujours au même point d'arrêt

A Sainte-Marthe Un général De noirs ramages

In 1970 verscheen dan eindelijk zijn eerste boek, If Only They Could Talk, onder het pseudoniem James Herriot.  In 1978 was zijn succes enorm. De BBC besloot een televisieserie te maken met de titel All Creatures Great and Small. Uiteindelijk werden 91 afleveringen gemaakt in 7 series, verspreid over dertien jaar (1978-1990).

Uit: The Real James Herriot

„23 February 1995 was a beautiful day in my part of North Yorkshire. From the top of Sutton Bank on the western edge of the North York Moors National Park, it was possible to see right across the Vale of York to the Yorkshire Dales over thirty miles away. The sun shone brightly out of a cloudless winter sky and I could clearly see the familiar bulk of Pen Hill, standing majestically over the entrance to Wensleydale -- the fresh whiteness of its snow-dusted slopes in vivid contrast to the dark green dale below. It was a cold, crisp, perfect winter's day, one that normally would have had me longing to walk for mile after mile in the clean air. It was a day when I should have felt glad to be alive.
The timeless magic of the Dales has always thrilled me but, on that brilliant February day, my mood was one of emptiness, as I knew that I would never again gaze across at those distant hills without a feeling of nostalgia and regret. On that day a great friend had did. His name was James Alfred Wight, a father in whose company I had spent countless happy hours. A man I shall never forget.
I was not alone in my sorrow. On that same day, others all over the world were also mourning the loss of a friend. His name was James Herriot, the country practitioner whose skill as a writer had elevated him to the statue of the world's most famous and best-loved veterinary surgeon. This incredibly successful storyteller, who sold more than 60 million books which had been translated into over twenty languages, wrote with such warmth, humour and sincerity that he was regarded as a friend by all who read him.“

Uit: Look Homeward, Angel

This is a moment:

An Englishman named Gilbert Gaunt, which he later changed to Gant (a concession probably to Yankee phonetics), having come to Baltimore from Bristol in 1837 on a sailing vessel, soon let the

profits of a public house which he had purchased roll down his improvident gullet.  He wandered westward into Pennsylvania, eking out a dangerous living by matching fighting cocks against the

champions of country barnyards, and often escaping after a night spent in a village jail, with his champion dead on the field of battle, without the clink of a coin in his pocket, and sometimes

with the print of a farmer's big knuckles on his reckless face.

But he always escaped, and coming at length among the Dutch at harvest time he was so touched by the plenty of their land that he cast out his anchors there.  Within a year he married a rugged young widow with a tidy farm who like all the other Dutch had been charmed by his air of travel, and his grandiose speech, particularly when he did Hamlet in the manner of the great Edmund Kean.  Every one said he should have been an actor.

The Englishman begot children--a daughter and four sons—lived easily and carelessly, and bore patiently the weight of his wife's harsh but honest tongue.  The years passed, his bright somewhat

staring eyes grew dull and bagged, the tall Englishman walked with a gouty shuffle: one morning when she came to nag him out of sleep she found him dead of an apoplexy.  He left five children, a mortgage and--in his strange dark eyes which now stared bright and open--something that had not died: a passionate and obscure hunger for voyages.

So, with this legacy, we leave this Englishman and are concerned hereafter with the heir to whom he bequeathed it, his second son, a boy named Oliver.  How this boy stood by the roadside near his

mother's farm, and saw the dusty Rebels march past on their way to Gettysburg, how his cold eyes darkened when he heard the great name of Virginia, and how the year the war had ended, when he was still fifteen, he had walked along a street in Baltimore, and seen within a little shop smooth granite slabs of death, carved lambs and cherubim, and an angel poised upon cold phthisic feet, with a smile

of soft stone idiocy--this is a longer tale.

An Amor

Amor, Vater süsser Lieder,

Du mein Phöbus, kehre wieder!

Kehre wieder in mein Herze!

Komm, doch mit dem schlauen Scherze.

Komm und laß zugleich Lyäen,

Dir zur Seite lachend gehen.

Komm mit einem holden Kinde,

Das mein träges Herz entzünde,

Und durch feuervolle Küsse

Zum Horaz mich küssen müsse.

Willst du, Gott der Zärtlichkeiten!

Laß auch Schmerzen dich begleiten:

Ich will lieber deine Schmerzen,

Als nicht küssen und nicht scherzen.

Uit: Godverdomse dagen op een godverdomse bol

„Alle begin is moeilijk.

Continual Conversation With A Silent Man

The old brown hen and the old blue sky,

Between the two we live and die--

The broken cartwheel on the hill.

As if, in the presence of the sea,

We dried our nets and mended sail

And talked of never-ending things,

Of the never-ending storm of will,

One will and many wills, and the wind,

Of many meanings in the leaves,

Brought down to one below the eaves,

Link, of that tempest, to the farm,

The chain of the turquoise hen and sky

And the wheel that broke as the cart went by.

It is not a voice that is under the eaves.

It is not speech, the sound we hear

In this conversation, but the sound

Of things and their motion: the other man,

A turquoise monster moving round.

Domination Of Black

At night, by the fire,

The colors of the bushes

And of the fallen leaves,

Repeating themselves,

Turned in the room,

Like the leaves themselves

Turning in the wind.

Yes: but the color of the heavy hemlocks

Came striding.

And I remembered the cry of the peacocks.

The colors of their tails

Were like the leaves themselves

Turning in the wind,

In the twilight wind.

They swept over the room,

Just as they flew from the boughs of the hemlocks

Down to the ground.

I heard them cry -- the peacocks.

Was it a cry against the twilight

Or against the leaves themselves

Turning in the wind,

Turning as the flames

Turned in the fire,

Turning as the tails of the peacocks

Turned in the loud fire,

Loud as the hemlocks

Full of the cry of the peacocks?

Or was it a cry against the hemlocks?

Out of the window,

I saw how the planets gathered

Like the leaves themselves

Turning in the wind.

I saw how the night came,

Came striding like the color of the heavy hemlocks

I felt afraid.

And I remembered the cry of the peacocks.

Als Diamante spilt / und ohn Auffhören brennt;

Ihr Wächter / die als Gott die Welt auff-wolte-bauen;

Not-Orpheus is singing   He sings his nothing   He sings his night

He sings all the names   The name of nothing   The only name    Since

long ago   He didn’t know it   And knew it in his night

All things sing   All names sing   Every tonal difference, every

sound   All music in its destruction   In its sublation   Toward which point?

The mountain of nothing hovers   Before it crushes us   With its night   With its

   song

In the evening I walked through town with you, Dearest, along the river

A clear cold spring evening, the half-moon shone   As if walking in a foreign city

Though I recognized parts of it   You said it was almost like

walking in Prague, where we would have been if my mother hadn’t fallen ill

When we stood by one corner of the Hotel Svea, where I played in a dance band in

    1957,

the huge flock of jackdaws, in the trees by the bastion near the castle, flew

out over the river, in micropolyphonic conversation    As in a piece by Ligeti

That night I dreamed I crossed a bridge spanning the river, now very broad

The long bridge was swaying, huge ocean swells entering the river from the sea

I walked with a girl, kissed her on the mouth, on the opposite bank

In the morning you came into my bed, Dear, we slinked like teenagers, so my

       mother wouldn’t hear us,

where she slept, in the room outside ours   She’s already much better

I look at my face in the bathroom mirror   Will I manage to go out into the Brain

Trucks pass   Traffic goes on, in the great exchange of goods

Gulls, trees, people   The degree of virtuality in different goods, the phantasms

also in what we eat, conceptions of origin, contents, effects

Fear    Cultivated tastes    We are in the immediacy of memory    Only in a flash of

astonishment can memory be broken   But even lightning is informed    I look at

    the

      magical

diagrams of Giordano Bruno, read his texts   See that all this is exactly as in

Jung, fundamental magical forms, for guiding the divine,

the unknown within the soul   Also the similarity with tantric forms

    Yes, that’s

        how it is,

I think, both Freud and Jung are magicians, the difference in rationality is

only marginal, Jung’s a little older, Freud’s more modern, a continuation of

Descartes, developed later in Spinoza’s pneumatic model for the passions,

and yet both are found, subsumed in Bruno’s love-flow, the lineage backward,

the tantric flow, also Plato’s Diotima, her flow . . .

Hölderlin saw the stream of people in dark water, streaming over

the ledges in the human-geological world, the levels of the abyss,   Para-

       dise’s various degrees of stasis

What use can I make of these magical forms? I’m no magician    And yet

I acknowledge their power, also within my self   If they prevail, sovereignty

is crushed   Libero arbitrio   There the forms also break down

The stream of love breaks down    Fluid lightning    The flash of vibrating being

But also the flash of darkness   The light of Beatrice’s eyes, their lightning

    flash   How

am I to understand this? How to understand unknowing   That I do not!

Uit: Lincoln, a Foreigner's Quest

“Hingham in Norfolk, England, is where Abraham Lincoln's paternal forebears came to America from, his father's great-great-grandfather having emigrated to the colonies in the late seventeenth century. It is a trim country village with a fine fourteenth-century church, some handsome eighteenth-century houses, a couple of inns, a Methodist chapel and a main road running through it. Unlike most English villages nowadays, it supports a thriving community of craftsmen and shopkeepers, and it used to bask in the local nickname "Little London."

Generations of Lincolns, we are told, lived in the ancillary hamlet of Swanton Morley, first in a cottage, then in a grander house which is now absorbed into the Angel Inn; a grassy plot of land behind the pub is preserved by the National Trust in not very evocative remembrance — it looks like a small bowling green. In Hingham church, amidst sundry Lincoln references and suitably embroidered hassocks, there is a bust of Abraham on a wall, presented by the citizens of Hingham, Massachusetts, and excellent cream teas are served at Lincoln's Tea and Coffee Shoppe along the road. All in all Hingham is a tasteful, steady, very Saxon sort of place, and the best-known British writer about Abraham Lincoln, Lord Charnwood, liked to think he could trace his hero's character to his Norfolk origins. He was of sound English rural stock, Charnwood thought, and it is true that to this day Lincoln's gaunt and lanky frame, his pinched face and his Anglo-Saxon attitudes sometimes do show among country people of East Anglia.

On the other hand, away to the west in the wild moorlands of north Wales stands a derelict farmhouse called Bryn Gwyn, near the hill-hamlet of Ysbyty Ifan, which is a place of quite another kind. It is a magical place. Fairies and magicians abounded there long ago, and princes, and elegiac bards! Melancholy songs were sung to the harp! Slippery tricks were played, ambiguous tales were told at firesides! A terrific prospect extends to the west from Bryn Gwyn, away to the clumped mountains of Eryri, white with snow in winter, blue-gray on a summer day. Not another house is to be seen from the old building, and nobody has lived here since the 1940s, but fine big ash trees stand guard behind it, and nearby are the barn and sheep pen where today's farmer shears his sheep and piles his black plastic packages of silage.”
