De zomer kan me gestolen worden I

De zomer kan me gestolen worden.
Fris groen verschrompelt zinderend tot as.

Ice

When friends no longer remembered
the reasons we set forth,
I switched between nanny and tartar
driving us on north.

Will you imagine a human hand
welded by ice to wood?
And skin when they chip it off?
I don’t think you should.

By day the appalling loose beauty
of prowling floes:
lions’ heads, dragons, crucifix-wrecks,
and a thing like a blown rose.

By night the seething hiss
of killers cruising past -
the silence after each fountain-jet,
and our hearts aghast.

Of our journey home and the rest
there is nothing more to say.
I have lived and not yet died.
I have sailed in the Scotia Sea.

The Last Call

Death called me,
I did not hear.
He spoke again:
Come near.

I went to look
for pity.
Poor death, I thought,
he loves me.

I guessed right,
he does.
And now I love him too,
just because.

Uit: Jericho's Fall

“Darkness bore down on her as the car shuddered up the mountain. Distant lights danced at the edge of her vision, then vanished. Beck wondered how bad it would be. In her mind, she saw only the Jericho she had loved fifteen yeas ago and, in some ways, still did: the dashing scion of an old New England family that had provided government officials since the Revolution. One of his ancestors had a traffic circle named for him in Washington. A cousin served in the Senate. The family’s history was overwhelming; the Jericho for whom Beck had fallen had certainly overwhelmed her. He had been brilliant, and powerful, and confident, and fun, ever ready with eternal wisdom, or clever barbs. She did not like to think of that mighty man ravaged by disease. She had no illusions. She remembered what cancer had done to her own father.
Whatever was waiting, she had to go.
On Saturday afternoon, having cleared her decks with Pfister, Beck took the shuttle from Boston to Washington. She lived in Virginia, a stone’s throw from Reagan National Airport. Her daughter was at a church retreat, church being a thing that Beck did because she had been raised that way, and her mother would be offended if Rebecca dared differ. Beck decided to let Nina stay the night with the other kids. The two of them could ride together to the airport on Sunday, then enplane for their different destinations. Rebecca’s mother, Jacqueline, had been after her for weeks to send Nina for a visit, and maybe this was the time. The child was only in second grade; missing a few days of instruction would do her no harm. Beck hesitated, then made the inevitable call to Florida, to ask if her mother could look after Nina. The conversation soon turned into a battle.
I don’t know how you could even think about taking a six-year-old to visit a man like that.
I’m not taking her, Mom. That’s why I’m calling you.
You said you decided not to take her. That means you thought about it. I don’t understand how your mind works sometimes.
She tried, and failed, to remember a time when she and her mother had not been at odds. Because, in the eyes of her eternally disappointed mother, Beck would never be more than ten years old. Certainly their animosity predated Jericho; and perhaps it had played some sort of role (as every one of the therapists Rebecca had consulted over the years seemed to think) in her falling in love, as a college sophomore, with a married man thirty-two years her senior who tossed away his remarkable career in order to possess her.
I appreciate your help, Mom.
Oh, so you appreciate me now. Does that mean you’ll call more often?”

Du sollst danken

Du sollst deinen Göttern danken

für den harten Zwang,

da du ohne Fußspur

irrst auf deinem Gang.

Du sollst deinen Göttern danken

für den schweren Schlag,

da du keine Zuflucht

hast bei Nacht und Tag.

Was die ganze Welt verworfen

ordnet sich im Kreise ein.

Vogelfrei gewinnst du

erst dein eignes Sein.

Ausgesetzt im Sand der Wüste

suchst du nach der Quelle Grund,

und du trinkst am Leben

dankbar dich gesund.

Tief hinein in dies silbemschimmernde Weltall springe

  ich als Schwimmer,

getauft in Reife, wiedergeboren zur Fülle.

Geheiligt zur Tat.

Leicht wie ein Lachen

zerteile ich ein goldenes Honigmeer,

das begehrt nach meinen hungrigen Händen.

The Fall

I have mouthed names
that are names no longer,
draw no reply now
only hard silence and an image
of graven stone.

Yew-trees, evergreen,
viridian intensity of growth;
gravity derived from dirt.

The names draw no reply,
only a silence in the mind,
movement of smoke.
familiar shadows that are only smoke.

The sun marks time
among the evergreens:
posture of green fire.

Stone cracked in the jaws of ice,
splintered, grinding,
mixed with moisture,
becoming dirt.

There is no grave memorial in carven stone.
There is one gravity.

The names falling from use
down into stone,
down into my mind.
There is no grave memorial in the future of my mind.

All names will fall from use.

Parallax

Figures group on the frozen square,

into the black shadow of flats;

dark path of snow from the abattoir:

and sills of an old debtor's prison

double this red-gold dusk.

call of a woman, a withered star,

falls, broken, through the resonant light.

Uit: The Lords of Discipline

„When I crossed the Ashley River my senior year in my gray 1959 Chevrolet, I was returning with confidence and even joy. I'm a senior now, I thought, looking to my right and seeing the restrained chaste skyline of Charleston again. The gentleness and purity of that skyline had always pleased me. A fleet of small sailboats struggled toward a buoy in the windless river, trapped like pale months in the clear amber of late afternoon.
Then I looked to my left and saw, upriver, the white battlements and parapets of Carolina Military Institute, as stolid and immovable in reality as in memory. The view to the left no longer caused me to shudder involuntarily as it had the first year. No longer was I returning to the cold, inimical eyes of the cadre. Now the cold eyes were mine and those of my classmates, and I felt only the approaching freedom that would come when I graduated in June. After a long childhood with an unbenign father and four years at the Institute, I was looking forward to that day of release when I would no longer be subject to the fixed, irresistible tenets of martial law, that hour when I would be presented with my discharge papers and could walk without cadences for the first time.
I was returning early with the training cadre in the third week of August. It was 1966, the war in Vietnam was gradually escalating, and Charleston had never looked so beautiful, so untouchable, or so completely mine. Yet there was an oddity about my presence on campus at this early date. I would be the only cadet private in the barracks during that week when the cadre would prepare to train the incoming freshmen. The cadre was composed of the highest-ranking cadet officers and non-coms in the corps of cadets. To them fell the serious responsibility of teaching the freshmen the cheerless rudiments of the fourth-class system during plebe week. The cadre was a diminutive regiment of the elite, chosen for their leadership, their military sharpness, their devotion to duty, their ambition, and their unquestioning, uncomplicated belief in the system.“

Uit: A Patchwork Planet

“I am a man you can trust, is how my customers view me. Or at least, I'm guessing it is. Why else would they hand me their house keys before they leave for vacation? Why else would they depend on me to clear their attics for them, heave their air conditioners into their windows every spring, lug their excess furniture to their basements? "Mind your step, young fellow; that's Hepplewhite," Mrs. Rodney says, and then she goes into her kitchen to brew a pot of tea. I could get up to anything in that basement. I could unlock the outside door so as to slip back in overnight and rummage through all she owns--her Hepplewhite desk and her Japanese lacquer jewelry box and the six potbellied drawers of her dining-room buffet. Not that I would. But she doesn't know that. She just assumes it. She takes it for granted that I'm a good person.Come to think of it, I am the one who doesn't take it for granted.

On the very last day of a bad old year, I was leaning against a pillar in the Baltimore railroad station, waiting to catch the 10:10 a.m. to Philadelphia. Philadelphia's where my little girl lives. Her mother married a lawyer there after we split up.Ordinarily I'd have driven, but my car was in the shop and so I'd had to fork over the money for a train ticket. Scads of money. Not to mention being some appointed place at some appointed time, which I hate. Plus, there were a lot more people waiting than I had expected. That airy, light, clean, varnished feeling I generally got in Penn Station had been crowded out. Elderly couples with matching luggage stuffed the benches, and swarms of college kids littered the floor with their duffel bags. This gray-haired guy was walking around speaking to different strangers one by one. Well-off guy, you could tell: tan skin, nice turtleneck, soft beige car coat. He went up to a woman sitting alone and asked her a question. Then he came over to a girl in a miniskirt standing near me.

I had been thinking I wouldn't mind talking to her myself.

She had long blond hair, longer than her skirt, which made it seem she'd neglected to put on the bottom half of her outfit. The man said, "Would you by any chance be traveling to Philadelphia?"

"Well, northbound, yes," she said, in this shallow, breathless voice that came as a disappointment.

"But to Philadelphia?"

"No, New York, but I'll be--"

"Thanks anyway," he said, and he moved toward the next bench.”

Wir turnen in höchsten Höhen herum...

Wir turnen in höchsten Höhen herum,
selbstredend und selbstreimend,
von einem I n d i v i d u u m
aus nichts als Worten träumend.

Was uns bewegt - warum? wozu? -
den Teppich zu verlassen?
Ein nie erforschtes Who-is-who
im Sturzflug zu erfassen.

Wer von so hoch zu Boden blickt,
der sieht nur Verarmtes / Verirrtes.
Ich sage: wer Lyrik schreibt, ist verrückt,
wer sie für wahr nimmt, wird es.

Ich spiel mit meinem Astralleib Klavier,
v i e r f ü ß i g - vierzigzehig -

A-u, o-u, a-u-w,
o-u-w of dubbel ee,
word je broer moet met dt,
wat een smerig rot-dictee.

En ‘t zijn niet alleen dictees
waar ik hier op school voor vrees:
ook elk opstel dat ik schrijf
staat van rooie strepen stijf.

Streep toch niet zoveel meneer,
anders durven wij niet meer,
worden ons leven lang
zelfs voor brieven schrijven bang.

Uit: The Art of Fiction (Interview in Paris Review)

”Writing that is meant solely for the public forum is often less interesting than writing where the writer has invented the public space inside the text, in the tone of the address, in the tone of the language. Public language is never new. But in good writing there is something absolutely new in the tone of what I think of as the public space in which the narrator addresses the reader. In a piece of writing the language runs along on the page and in the mind of a reader; in that language there is no actual physical space, but the language should carry the implication of a physical-social location. If you've been to a large Edwardian house you may have seen a small room with a fireplace and a couch, and perhaps two chairs-not a formal, large room, but one where you can sit and talk, where you gossip. Henry James has a tone of address as if he's arrived at such a house, not his own, and he is seated by the fire; an invisible interlocutor or audience listens closely. Walt Whitman speaks outdoors, it seems to me. The space Whitman suggests is complex and American and I think beautiful and a completely new invention. One thing that is unique about it is that there's no tinge of social class in it whatsoever. Jane Austen's writing suggests a drawing-room sort of space; Hemingway's, on a barstool or in a club car; it changes: he's complicated. Emily Dickinson creates a marvelous public space, too, and one of the marvelous things about it is that it is so clearly an invention since it isn't based on being public; it is without a sense of the public. D. H. Lawrence is an absolutely amazing writer, with a fantastic sense of the language, but his sense of public space wavers, and sometimes a whole book or long story of his will collapse when he shifts the public space too drastically and becomes churchly-fascistic, or starts yelling as if in a corral, then muttering in a hallway—no order in it at all.”

Uit: The Lincolns

“Walking east on Jefferson Street with the setting sun behind him, Abraham Lincoln followed his shadow toward the house on Sixth Street where he had arranged to meet his love in secret.

The tall man cast a long shadow in the November light. The October rains and wind had nearly stripped the trees of their leaves—the maple, the walnut, the oak of the prairie. He liked the trees without their foliage “as their anatomy could then be studied.” The outline of a silver maple against the sky was delicate but firm; the network of shades the branches cast upon the ground seemed to him a virtual “profile” of the tree.

“Perhaps a man’s character is like a tree, and his reputation like its shadow; the shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” This idea, which would attend the young man on an eventful journey into middle age, might now provide small comfort. For he had gone and made a fool of himself, during the previous two years of his life, a very public sort of fool at the age of thirty-three.

Now, strolling the wooden planks of a makeshift sidewalk laid along the mud ruts of Jefferson Street, past the new state capitol building with its stately columns and dome upon the square, Lincoln followed his shadow and his reputation toward the home of his friend Simeon Francis, where he could pursue his folly behind closed doors. If a man’s character is like the tree and one’s reputation like the shadow, he had begun, by trial and error, to understand his character, his virtues and weaknesses; but he still had little sense of what the world might make of his reputation.

He was a secretive man, who kept his own counsel. He was an ambitious man of humble origins, with colossal designs on the future. And it would always be advantageous not to be closely known, never to be transparent. Passing a farmer on a dray, he would tip his hat and grin. Everybody knew him. Nobody knew him. He would play the fool, the clown, the melancholy poet dying for love, the bumpkin. He would take the world by stealth and not by storm. He would disarm enemies by his apparent naïveté, by seeming pleasantly harmless. He would go to such lengths in making fun of his own appearance that others felt obliged to defend it.”

Dream Song 3: A Stimulant for an Old Beast

Acacia, burnt myrrh, velvet, pricky stings.

—I'm not so young but not so very old,

said screwed-up lovely 23.

A final sense of being right out in the cold,

unkissed.

(—My psychiatrist can lick your psychiatrist.) Women get under

  things.

All these old criminals sooner or later

have had it. I've been reading old journals.

Gottwald & Co., out of business now.

Thick chests quit. Double agent, Joe.

She holds her breath like a seal

and is whiter & smoother.

Rilke was a jerk.

I admit his griefs & music

& titled spelled all-disappointed ladies.

A threshold worse than the circles

where the vile settle & lurk,

Rilke's. As I said,—

Dream Song 5: Henry sats in de bar & was odd

Henry sats in de bar & was odd,

off in the glass from the glass,

at odds wif de world & its god,

his wife is a complete nothing,

St Stephen

getting even.

Henry sats in de plane & was gay.

Careful Henry nothing said aloud

but where a Virgin out of cloud

to her Mountain dropt in light,

his thought made pockets & the plane buckt.

'Parm me, lady.' 'Orright.'

Henry lay in de netting, wild,

while the brainfever bird did scales;

Mr Heartbreak, the New Man,

come to farm a crazy land;

an image of the dead on the fingernail

of a newborn child.

Mijn blanken mantel vol verborgen brood,.

- Zacht floot,

Boven mijn hoofd, zijn hoonlied: - ‘Ziel is logen!’

Een vogel zwart, doch éen, vol mededoogen

En sneeuwwit, zong: - ‘Roep moed! bloei zoet!’ en vlood.

Doch diep in 't woud, kwam ik mijn heerscher tegen,

Die wederkwam van jacht op weerloos wild.

- ‘Hoe dwaalt zoo laat gij langs verborgen wegen?

Sneeuwlucht.

O bleeke hemel! geef me uw blanke droomen,

Aard, hemel, lied, gij kunt mij ál hergeven,
