Weep, sky, weep

Weep, sky, weep and weep! Wash the unabated sea
Of thin-voiced waters and dampen the heart.
It seems it was just now, just yesterday
That a deathly shiver buried you alive.
Weep, sky, weep and weep! The past cannot be returned.
Today has been reduced to naught, the future will not come.
Something weighs on the mind that can never
Be torn from the heart. This prison is a prison for prisons!
Weep, sky, weep and weep! Still over your horizons
And let the stars fall from darkened skies!
Is there in this world a trumpet that will sound
A final blast to keep me from my resurrection?
Flow, water, flaw and sweep me away from my weariness,
For eternities of bondage have crushed me.
High upland thunder, girdle the earth!
Pitch-winged cloud, bless me!
Lightning, send a message!
Hallowed be the world. The night is its companion.
So, water. Flow forth! And you, misfortune, rage

New Year’s Day

This is the loneliest spot in the country on New Year’s Day.

I’ve spent the whole long winter here,

devoid of everything.

It’s been a week already since the boats stopped running.

Chuja Island goes on getting smaller

until sad eyes cannot see it.

Don’t overturn the glass from which you drank.

Once you’re past thirty,

you can make friends with an empty glass.

Tell me, wind: what can I hope for on New Year’s Day on this remote island?

After some tedious, very tedious reading

by the light of a small oil lamp,

I mutter a single drunken line

but vowels alone can’t make it audible

as far as that widower’s tomb out there.

So, wind: let none live here but those who will die here.

Endurance is the greatest journey of all.

Even if the boats are completely overwhelmed by the gale,

I’m going to set out, though I’ve got no overcoat.

Tell me again, wind: what more can I hope for on New Year’s Day?

From the guts of a boarding house, coughs flee

one after another, that’s all I can hear.

One day, they’ll return, transformed into the local dialect.

Ah, New Year’s greetings, buried alive by Cheju Island’s wild whirlwinds.

»Reden Sie keinen Quatsch.
»Also gut.«

"Was gibt es Neues?
Still und abgeklärt.

“So, when the contenders for Uncle Niszel’s mattress pillaged his body in the dark, the girls fluttered and huddled. Then one of them—a tall, blonde, pretty girl of about twenty with a slight squint—separated from the group and set out unsteadily towards the Ark of the Covenant. She stopped and squatted down at the edge of my mattress.
‘Mr Hirschler,’ she whispered, ‘that friendly gendarme was here just now. He said that from tomorrow they’ll be beating people up to make them admit where they’ve hidden their jewellery. They’ll do it in alphabetical order, and my father’s name starts with B.’
‘Have you hidden anything?’
‘Yes. My father has high blood pressure. He wouldn’t be able to bear a single blow.’
‘Then it might be wiser to tell, so they don’t hurt him.’
‘But they’ll beat him all the same.’
‘Well, then . . .’
‘The gendarme says’, she whispered, bending close to my ear, ‘that if I go to bed with him he’ll save Daddy. I know your real name, Mr Hirschler. I’ve read things you’ve written . . . You could advise me.’
I wouldn’t have felt particularly guilty in this situation, in this hell, this synagogue of the wonder-rabbi, if
I had advised the girl to give in to the gendarme. So many things had been lost since 19 March.* There are really no bogus, high-flown sentiments left in me. I’m saying this as one who has lost not only all his belongings, but something very important, something vital: above all else, I have lost my homeland. This homeland has always meant more to me than to most people around me: it exercised me feverishly when I was writing, speaking or dreaming, and there were years, particularly the years of my youth, when, for example, I hardly took notice of love because of it. That was the time when after the failure of two revolutions,* for nearly a decade I waited for my political ideas to prevail, for my exiled role models and friends to return and save my homeland from the crooks and bunglers. Yes, I waited for nearly ten years, in which I had no lover. And when I had tired of waiting and almost renounced the game for the duration of my life, I married, clutching at privacy as a shipwrecked man clutches at a plank that might help him reach some shore—although I must admit I had no illusions about the shore. But, for all my conscious efforts to abandon ‘my crazy ideas and whims’, I was time and again dragged out of my private idyll, which had soon staled, by my social passion: the most simple-minded reason for hope was enough to make me forget where I lived and where a person living with me was waiting with my dinner. A few months after my divorce from my first wife we tried to trace the events leading up to our slow, bitter drift apart. ‘What started the trouble’, she said, ‘was that I was all of eighteen years old and married for six weeks when you woke up one morning and said “Bethlen!” instead of noticing—with the March sun shining on our bed—that it was the first day of spring.’

Observed over Miami, the city, an orange slick blister,
the houses, stiff haired organisms clamped to the earth, engorged with oil and wheat
rubber and metals, the total contents of the brain, the electrical
regions of the atmosphere, water

coming north, reeling, a neurosis of hinged
clouds, bodies thicken, flesh

out in embarrassing health,
six boys, fast food on their breath,
luscious paper bags, the perfume of grilled offal,
trough-like cartons of cola,
a gorgon luxury of electronics, backward caps,
bulbous clothing, easy hearts

lines of visitors are fingerprinted,
eye-scanned, grow murderous,
then there's the business of thoughts
who can glean with any certainty,
the guards, blued and leathered, multiply
to stop them,
palimpsests of old borders, the sea's graph on the skin,
the dead giveaway of tongues,
soon, soon, the implants to discern lies

from the way a body moves

there's that already

she felt ill, wanted
to murder the six boys, the guards,
the whole line of the poor sick sad world
burning their beautiful eyes in the patient queue

Let's go to the republic of homefrom
let's forget all this then, this victorious procession
these blenching queues
this timeless march of nails in shoeless feet

what people will take and give,
the passive lines, the passive guards,
if passivity can be inchoate self loathing

all around, and creeping

self righteous, let's say it, fascism,
how else to say, border,
and the militant consumption of everything,
the encampment of the airport, the eagerness
to be all the same, to mince biographies
to some exact phrases, some
exact and toxic genealogy

Morgen maken we geen plannen

Misschien gaan we wel in schilderij,
zoeken hoe kleuren samenspannen
voelen hoe wolken ruimte maken
luisteren hoe licht water schept.
De nieuwe dag
verfris ik je met amandelbloesem,
wikkel je in kleed van bladeren,
maak boot van bed.
Boven water waait een stem
over lief hebben en houden van-
Is er verschil, maakt het éen lichter?
Is het ander tilbaar?

Als zeevlam verdwijnt chaos uit
ons denken,
dit is het-
we vragen ons nu niet af wat
of we zoeken, bedenken evenmin of
we iets zouden vinden.

Tot over de randen met leegte
gevulde handen, zo vol staat de maan.
Melieve verwen de glazen,
fuif dit bestaan.

"I mean, just look at the drop in arousingness between Playboy magazine and the exact same women when they're moving from pose to pose on the Playboy channel. It's true that I don't actually get the Playboy channel, so I see everything on it through those houndstooth and herringbone cycles of the scrambling circuit, and I keep flipping back and forth between it and the two channels on either side of it because sometimes for an instant the picture is startled into visibility just after you switch the channel, and you'll catch this bright yellow torso and one full fran with a fire-engine-red nipple, and then it teeters, it falters, and collapses--and I've noticed that the scrambling works least well and you can see things when nothing is moving in the TV image, i.e., when it's a TV image of a magazine image, sort of as if the scrambling cicuitry is overcome in the same way I am sometimes overcome by the power of fixed pictures. I once stayed up until two-thirty in the morning doing this, flipping."

Recommencer la vie ainsi qu’un héritage;

You're a psychopath, Eric."  The smoke came out of the lieutenant's mouth as if his words were stoked by an inner fire.  "A monster."
Eric recoiled, as if the old cop had struck him in the face.  Monster?
"Chances are you'll kill again.  You know it and I know it."
Or was the old cop merely trying to taunt him?  Trying to make him lose his cool?  Don't let him do that.  Monster was only a word, anyway.  And those were the only weapons the lieutenant had: words.
"You're taking a lot for granted, Lieutenant," Eric said, the sound of his voice reassuring, establishing his control of the conversation once more. "You're making wild accusations.  I wasn't even convicted by a jury.  A judge heard my case.  He didn't think I was a monster.  He was very sympathetic.  So were a lot of other people."
"Other people?  Did you take a close look at them?  Who they were, what they were?  You killed your mother and father, Eric.  In cold blood."  Not sounding tired anymore.
Eric did not smile but his eyes gleamed.  The lieutenant did not know about the others.  Nobody knew about them.“

Uit: Dust Tracks on a Road

„Like the dead-seeming, cold rocks, I have memories within that came out of the material that went to make me. Time and place have had their say.

So you will have to know something about the time and place where I came from, in order that you may interpret the incidents and directions of my life.

I was born in a Negro town. I do not mean by that the black back-side of an average town. Eatonville, Florida, is, and was at the time of my birth, a pure Negro town--charter, mayor, council, town marshal and all. It was not the first Negro community in America, but it was the first to be incorporated, the first attempt at organized self-government on the part of Negroes in America.

Eatonville is what you might call hitting a straight lick with a crooked stick. The town was not in the original plan. It is a by-product of something else.

It all started with three white men on a ship off the coast of Brazil. They had been officers in the Union Army. When the bitter war had ended in victory for their side, they had set out for South America. Perhaps the post-war distress made their native homes depressing. Perhaps it was just that they were young, and it was hard for them to return to the monotony of everyday being after the excitement of military life, and they, as numerous other young men, set out to find new frontiers.

But they never landed in Brazil. Talking together on the ship, these three decided to return to the United States and try their fortunes in the unsettled country of South Florida. No doubt the same thing which had moved them to go to Brazil caused them to choose South Florida.“
