‘Daar is me niets van bekend,’ zei juffrouw Plogge.

„And to fill all these white pages that are left for me with the same monotonous question: at what hour do the hours end? And the anterooms, the memorials, the intrigues, the negotiations with the Janitor, the Rotating Chairman, the Secretary, the Associate, the Delegate. To glimpse the Influential from afar and to send my card each year to remind – who? – that in some corner, devoted, steady, plodding, although not very sure of my existence, I too await the coming of my hour, I too exist. No. I quit.

Yes, I know, I could settle down in an idea, in a custom, in an obsession. Or stretch out on the coals of a pain or some hope and wait there, not making much noise. Of course it's not so bad: I eat, drink, sleep, make love, observe the marked holidays and go to the beach in summer. People like me and I like them. I take my condition lightly: sickness, insomnia, nightmares, social gatherings, the idea of death, the little worm that burrows into the heart or the liver (the little worm that leaves its eggs in the brain and at night pierces the deepest sleep), the future at the expense of today – the today that never comes on time, that always loses its bets. No. I renounce my ration card, my I.D., my birth certificate, voter's registration, passport, code number, countersign, credentials, safe conduct pass, insignia, tattoo, brand.

The world stretches out before me, the vast world of the big, the little, and the medium. Universe of kings and presidents and jailors, of mandarins and pariahs and liberators and liberated, of judges and witnesses and the condemned: stars of the first, second, third and nth magnitudes, planets, comets, bodies errant and eccentric or routine and domesticated by the laws of gravity, the subtle laws of falling, all keeping step, all turning slowly or rapidly around a void. Where they claim the central sun lies, the solar being, the hot beam made out of every human gaze, there is nothing but a hole and less than a hole: the eye of a dead fish, the giddy cavity of the eye that falls into itself and looks at itself without seeing. There is nothing with which to fill the hollow center of the whirlwind.“

Winter song

You are so beautiful in winter!
The field stretched on its back, near the horizon,
and the trees stopped running from the winter wind ...
My nostrils tremble
and no scent
and no breeze
only the distant, icy smell
of the suns.
How transparent your hands are in winter!
And no one passes -
only the white suns revolve in quiet worship.
and the thought spreads in circles
ringing the trees
in twos
in fours.

Season's end

I was so very aware
that the afternoon was dying in the domes,
and all around me sounds froze,
turned to winding pillars.

I was so very aware
that the undulant drift of scents
was collapsing into darkness,
and it seemed I had never tasted
the cold.

Suddenly
I awoke so far away
and strange,
wandering behind my face
as though I had hidden my feelings
in the sensless relief of the moon.

I was so very aware
that
I did not recognize you, and perhaps
you come, always,
every hour, every second,
moving through my vigil - then -
as through the spectre of a triumphal arch.

In Lewanskis Garderobe residierte Frau Altenschul.

Colors Passing Through Us

Purple as tulips in May, mauve

into lush velvet, purple

as the stain blackberries leave

on the lips, on the hands,

the purple of ripe grapes

sunlit and warm as flesh.

Every day I will give you a color,

like a new flower in a bud vase

on your desk. Every day

I will paint you, as women

color each other with henna

on hands and on feet.

Red as henna, as cinnamon,

as coals after the fire is banked,

the cardinal in the feeder,

the roses tumbling on the arbor

their weight bending the wood

the red of the syrup I make from petals.

Orange as the perfumed fruit

hanging their globes on the glossy tree,

orange as pumpkins in the field,

orange as butterflyweed and the monarchs

who come to eat it, orange as my

cat running lithe through the high grass.

Yellow as a goat's wise and wicked eyes,

yellow as a hill of daffodils,

yellow as dandelions by the highway,

yellow as butter and egg yolks,

yellow as a school bus stopping you,

yellow as a slicker in a downpour.

Here is my bouquet, here is a sing

song of all the things you make

me think of, here is oblique

praise for the height and depth

of you and the width too.

Here is my box of new crayons at your feet.

Green as mint jelly, green

as a frog on a lily pad twanging,

the green of cos lettuce upright

about to bolt into opulent towers,

green as Grand Chartreuse in a clear

glass, green as wine bottles.

Blue as cornflowers, delphiniums,

bachelors' buttons. Blue as Roquefort,

blue as Saga. Blue as still water.

Blue as the eyes of a Siamese cat.

Blue as shadows on new snow, as a spring

azure sipping from a puddle on the blacktop.

Cobalt as the midnight sky

when day has gone without a trace

and we lie in each other's arms

eyes shut and fingers open

and all the colors of the world

pass through our bodies like strings of fire.

Uit: Perfidia

„She was raised on a farm west of Montreal, ran away from home when she was sixteen. In 1965. She packed her knapsack with some clothes and necessities, plus she stole her favorite two of her father's 78's that the two of them listened to together on the phonograph in the kitchen. "Perfidia" and "Remember." Her mother had no use for music and they'd never bought a more modern system. She stayed with the first man who gave her a hitch until she lied about her age and got a job as a waitress. She'd changed her name a few times, but I think that she'd settled on Anita by then. She alwaysinsisted that she wasn't pretty, though I thought she was beautiful, and she was terribly sexy, with a big bosom, great legs, and a lively, teasing manner with men. She had no trouble connecting with them in those days when even the middle class had begun to think that sex was free and easy. After a couple of years in Montreal, she hitched to Toronto, which she'd say she eventually left because it was too clean. She had stories about the café and restaurant owners she worked for and slept with. She called them Pierre One, Pierre Two and so on, though they mostly weren't French. (My given name was Madeleine. She claimed it was one of the few things my father ever insisted upon. She didn't like it because it was French.) When she told the umpteenth Pierre that she was leaving Toronto, and he said she had to stay until he found another waitress, she suggested he bring in the cow who was his wife, it wouldn't hurt for her to know what it was like to work for a living.
My mother told stories like that more readily than she told ones in which she did something nice. Nor did she ever make any effort to conceal her sexual adventures from me, though she was occasionally surprised or amused that I knew as much as I did.“

Uit: The Journals

„25 September (1949)
3 a.m. Beautifully played New Orleans jazz, with clarinet in low register, and very jazzy tuba and cornet. Bessie Smith singing. This sort of stuff has in it the germ of music that will last.
Op. 55. Splendidly vigorous, with some of the secret lyricality of the last quartets.2

Writing fever. Can't get any university work done. Full of ideas for 'Cognac' and full of frustration at not having the time to do them. 'Cognac' must aim at being popular, with art overboard. The idea came all in two hours last night and this morning.

30 September
Another appalling half-hour of talk. When screaming was close. Talk of the utmost banality, on prices of mattresses, on Mrs Ramsey's daughter who married a doctor in Montreal. A few comments are made on poetry. So hopeless to try and explain. They would never understand. No mention of art can ever be developed in case we are 'highbrow' - God, how I hate that word! No philosophy is mentioned, without Thomas Hardy and Darwin getting dragged in. It is la mere. Her attitude to conversation is one of complete alertness. I must break in, and I must say something - and in she breaks and says something, whether she has any knowledge, real opinion or not. It is with great difficulty that I can keep my oyster silence. But I must not hurt. With le pere, it is partly a defence; modernity is ignored, age is suspicious of invention.
I feel violent with 'hate' against this bloody town. Least violent, now, against the geographical situation (once I longed for Devon), most against the way of life, and then the people who allow it to sap all the beauty of life out of them. All my sympathy goes out to the boy who ran away to be a bullfighter. I'm sure he must have 'felt' the complete horror of this place. This town can have as much horror mentally for a sensitive person as a blitzed city may have, physically, for a turnip. It is the unsociability, the not-knowing-anyone, the having-no-colour, that kills. No interesting people to talk to, no sincere people, no unusual things to do.
Then there is 'niceness' as a standard of judgement - God, how I hate that word, too! - 'a nice girl', 'a nice road'. Nice = colourless, efficient, with nose glued to the middle path, with middle interests, dizzy with ordinariness. Ugh!“

Bermudas

Where the remote Bermudas ride

In th' Oceans bosome unespy'd,

From a small Boat, that row'd along,

The listning Winds receiv'd this Song.

What should we do but sing his Praise

That led us through the watry Maze,

Unto an Isle so long unknown,

And yet far kinder than our own?

Where he the huge Sea-Monsters wracks,

That lift the Deep upon their Backs.

He lands us on a grassy stage;

Safe from the Storms, and Prelat's rage.

He gave us this eternal Spring,

Which here enamells every thing;

And sends the Fowl's to us in care,

On daily Visits through the Air,

He hangs in shades the Orange bright,

Like golden Lamps in a green Night.

And does in the Pomgranates close,

Jewels more rich than Ormus show's.

He makes the Figs our mouths to meet;

And throws the Melons at our feet.

But Apples plants of such a price,

No Tree could ever bear them twice.

With Cedars, chosen by his hand,

From Lebanon, he stores the Land.

And makes the hollow Seas, that roar,

Proclaime the Ambergris on shoar.

He cast (of which we rather boast)

The Gospels Pearl upon our coast.

And in these Rocks for us did frame

A Temple, where to sound his Name.

Oh let our Voice his Praise exalt,

Till it arrive at Heavens Vault:

Which thence (perhaps) rebounding, may

Eccho beyond the Mexique Bay.

Thus sung they, in the English boat,

An holy and a chearful Note,

And all the way, to guide their Chime,

With falling Oars they kept the time.

The Meadows In Spring

'Tis a dull sight

To see the year dying,

When winter winds

Set the yellow wood sighing:

Sighing, oh! sighing.

When such a time cometh,

I do retire

Into and old room

Beside a bright fire:

Oh, pile a bright fire!

And there I sit

Reading old things,

Of knights and lorn damsels,

While the wind sings—

Oh, drearily sings!

I never look out

Nor attend to the blast;

For all to be seen

Is the leaves falling fast:

Falling, falling!

But close at the hearth,

Like a cricket, sit I,

Reading of summer

And chivalry—

Gallant chivalry!

Then with an old friend

I talk of our youth!

How 'twas gladsome, but often

Foolish, forsooth:

But gladsome, gladsome!

Or to get merry

We sing some old rhyme,

That made the wood ring again

In summertime—

Sweet summertime!

Then go we to smoking,

Silent and snug:

Nought passes between us,

Save a brown jug—

Sometimes!

And sometimes a tear

Will rise in each eye,

Seeing the two old friends

So merrily—

So merrily!

And ere to bed

Go we, go we,

Down on the ashes

We kneel on the knee,

Praying together!

Thus, then, live I,

Till, 'mid all the gloom,

By heaven! the bold sun

Is with me in the room

Shining, shining!

Then the clouds part,

Swallow soaring between;

The spring is alive,

And the meadows are green!

I jump up, like mad,

Break the old pipe in twain,

And away to the meadows,

The meadows again!

RHYME OF RHYMES

Wild on the mountain peak the wind
Repeats its old refrain,
Like ghosts of mortals who have sinned,
And fain would sin again.

For "wind" I do not rhyme to "mind,"
Like many mortal men,
"Again" (when one reflects) 'twere kind
To rhyme as if "agen."

I never met a single soul
Who SPOKE of "wind" as "wined,"
And yet we use it, on the whole,
To rhyme to "find" and "blind."

We SAY, "Now don't do that AGEN,"
When people give us pain;
In poetry, nine times in ten,
It rhymes to "Spain" or "Dane."

Oh, which are wrong or which are right?
Oh, which are right or wrong?
The sounds in prose familiar, quite,
Or those we meet in song?

To hold that "love" can rhyme to "prove"
Requires some force of will,
Yet in the ancient lyric groove
We meet them rhyming still.

This was our learned fathers' wont
In prehistoric times,
We follow it, or if we don't,
We oft run short of rhymes.

Les Noms Sur Les Murs

D'autres sont venus par ici,

Dont les noms sur les murs moisis,

Se défont déjà, et s'écaillent.

Ils ont souffert et espéré,

Et parfois l'espoir était vrai,

Parfois il dupait ces murailles.

Venus d'ici, venus d'ailleurs,

Nous n'avions pas le même coeur,

Nous a-t-on dit. Faut-il le croire ?

Mais qu'importe ce que nous fûmes !

Nos visages noyés de brume

Se ressemblent dans la nuit noire.

C'est à vous, frères inconnus,

Que je pense le soir venu,

O mes fraternels adversaires

hinten Wildnis, Unkraut, hohes Gras, Disteln.

Solo

Geen mythe of wildwestverhaal
is het wat ik ditmaal opschrijf.
Ik klauter uit een krater, kaal -
de zon brandt op mijn dunne lijf.

Ik roep een zin. Het klinkt te schraal
in het omringende gewelf -
ik heb geen schim of filiaal -
ik ben vandaag alleen mezelf.

Ik kan mij niet beroepen op
een stand-in of een stijlfiguur,
een schuilnaam of een ledenpop.
Er is geen spoor van literatuur.

A poor young shepherd

J'ai peur d'un baiser
Comme d'une abeille.
Je souffre et je veille
Sans me reposer :
J'ai peur d'un baiser !

Pourtant j'aime Kate
Et ses yeux jolis.
Elle est délicate,
Aux longs traits pâlis.
Oh ! que j'aime Kate !

C'est Saint-Valentin !
Je dois et je n'ose
Lui dire au matin...
La terrible chose
Que Saint-Valentin !

Elle m'est promise,
Fort heureusement !
Mais quelle entreprise
Que d'être un amant
Près d'une promise !

J'ai peur d'un baiser
Comme d'une abeille.
Je souffre et je veille
Sans me reposer :
J'ai peur d'un baiser !

Beams

Hummingbird

One day in a lifetime

I saw one with wings

a pipesmoke blur

shaped like half a kiss

and its raspberry-stone

heart winked fast

in a thumbnail of a breast.

In that blink it

was around a briar

and out of sight, but

I caught a flash

of its brain

where flowers swing

udders of sweet cider;

and we pass as thunderclouds or,

dangers like death, earthquake, and war,

ignored because it's no use worrying ....

By him I mean. Responsibility

Against the threat of termination

by war or other things

is given us as by a deity.

hinter Gladiolen, Rittersporn, Margeriten, Astern

Brennesseln, Quecke, Kraut, Kompost, Laubhaufen, Mist,

schief zugeschnitten ins Kuvert geknickt,

ward weggelegt … dann endlich ausgebreitet …

Ach, flammt der Funken aus verschlacktem Wort?

Uit: Wilt in Nowhere

„‘God, what a day,’ said Wilt as he and Peter Braintree sat in the garden of the Duck and Dragon with their beers and watched a lone oarsman scull down the river. It was summer and the evening sun glinted on the water. ‘After that bloody Entitlement meeting I had to tell Johnson and Miss Flour they’ve been made redundant because of the financial cuts, and then after that I was told that the Computer Department is going to do next year’s timetable and I don’t have to bother, the Vice-Principal sends a memo to say there’s a glitch in the programme or something and I’ve had to do it myself.’

‘You’d think the one thing a computer would be good at was sorting classes and putting them in the right rooms. All it requires is logic,’ said Braintree, Head of English.

‘Logic, my foot. Try using logic with Mrs Robbins who won’t teach in Room 156 because Laurence Seaforth is next door in 155 and she can’t make herself heard for the din his drama class makes. And Seaforth won’t move because he’s used 155 for ten solid years and the acoustics are just right for declaiming “To be or not to be” or Henry V’s speech at Agincourt in multi-decibels. Try getting a computer to take that into account.’

‘It’s the human factor. I’ve had the same sort of trouble with Jackson and Ian Wesley. They’re supposed to grade the same exam papers and if Jackson marks a paper high, Wesley invariably says it’s lousy. Human factor every time.’

Restaurant mit Adlervoliere

Taschkent, Usbekistan

Uigurisch
ist hier die Küche,
ihr Abfall nährt einen Adler: der
Jäger auf Kundenfang. Immerhin Freiluft und Raum,
die gestutzten Schwingen zu dehnen, sie vorzuweisen
den Männern. Schweigend begaffen
sie ihn, als wüssten sie, was ihnen
blüht. Des Königs Federkleid
löchrig wie Lumpen. Im
Auge die Seele
blind.

Wisdom And Life

Wisdom is ofttimes nearer when we stoop than when we soar.

THE senatorial seers that pave
With obstacles the People's way,
And shatter hopes of ages till
Poor life regrets her tim'rous day;
Half spending life in building words
Till hair is scant and beards are grey,
Then spending all the rest of life
To take the pile of words away.
But surging life, in spite of these,
Still holds her everlasting sway,
And manifests her wisdom in
The glorious tune of children's play.

Poor precious priests with passion strive
Desires of flesh to overthrow,
And try to quench the flaming sun
In tiny flakes of sacred snow;
But clouds of sin and fear are chang'd
To rosy mists by love's warm glow,
And sober priests give place to Pan
Where thickets shade and blossoms blow;

Unbegreiflich

Sie rechnen viel und zählen,
Und eins ist doch nur not.
Sie sorgen stets und quälen
Sich nur ums Erdenbrot.

Sie schaffen, tauschen, wählen,
Und bald kommt doch der Tod,
Der ihre Güter stehlen,
Vernichten wird - o Not!

Drum laßt das Sorgen, Quälen
Und denkt ans Himmelsbrot.
Habt kurze Zeit zum Wählen:
Heut rot und morgen tot.

So laßt das Rechnen, Zählen,
Begreift: »Nur eins ist not«,
Und denkt an eure Seelen
Und denkt an Gott und Tod.

Uit: Black Beauty

„The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it. Some shady trees leaned over it, and rushes and water lilies grew at the deep end. Over the hedge on one side we looked into a plowed field, and on the other we looked over a gate at our master's house, which stood by the roadside. At the top of the meadow was a plantation of fir trees, and at the bottom a running brook overhung by a steep bank.
While I was young I lived upon my mother's milk, as I could not eat grass. In the daytime I ran by her side, and at night I lay down close by her. When it was hot we used to stand by the pond in the shade of the trees, and when it was cold we had a nice warm shed near the plantation.
As soon as I was old enough to eat grass, my mother used to go out to work in the daytime and come back in the evening.
There were six young colts in the meadow besides me. They were older than I was; some were nearly as large as grown-up horses. I used to run with them, and had great fun; we used to gallop all together round and round the field, as hard as we could go. Sometimes we had rather rough play, for they would frequently bite and kick as well as gallop.
One day, when there was a good deal of kicking, my mother whinnied to me to come to her, and then she said:
"I wish you to pay attention to what I am going to say to you. The colts who live here are very good colts, but they are carthorse colts and, of course, they have not learned manners. You have been well bred and well born; your father has a great name in these parts, and your grandfather won the cup two years at the Newmarket races.Your grandmother had the sweetest temper of any horse I ever knew, and I think you have never seen me kick or bite. I hope you will grow up gentle and good, and never learn bad ways; do your work with a good will, lift your feet up well when you trot, and never bite or kick even in play."
