Mijn moeder is kwijt.

Autumn Days

I have been through the woods to-day

And the leaves were falling,

Summer had crept away,

And the birds were not calling.

And the bracken was like yellow gold

That comes too late,

When the heart is sad and old,

And death at the gate.

Ah, mournful Autumn ! Sad,

Slow death that comes at last,

I am mad for a yesterday, mad !

I am sick for a year that is past!

Though the sun be like blood in the sky

He is cold as the lips of hate,

And he fires the sere leaves as they lie

On their bed of earth, too late.

They are dead, and the bare trees weep

Not loud as a mortal weeping,

But as sorrow that sighs in sleep,

And as grief that is still in sleeping.

A Winter Sunset

The frosty sky, like a furnace burning,

The keen air, crisp and cold,

And a sunset that splashes the clouds with gold

But my heart to summer turning.

Come back, sweet summer ! come back again !

I hate the snow,

And the icy winds that the north lands blow,

And the fall of the frozen rain.

I hate the iron ground,

And the Christmas roses,

And the sickly day that dies when it closes,

With never a song or a sound.

Come back ! come back ! with your passionate heat

And glowing hazes,

And your sun that shines as a lover gazes,

And your day with the tired feet.

Uit: The Good Terrorist

“The house was set back from the noisy main road in what seemed to be a rubbish tip. A large house. Solid. Black tiles stood at angles along the gutter, and into a gap near the base of a fat chimney a bird flew, trailing a piece of grass several times its length.
"I should think 1910," said Alice. "Look how thick the walls are." This could be seen through the broken window just above them on the first floor. She got no response, but nevertheless shrugged off her backpack, letting it tumble onto a living rug of young nettles that was trying to digest rusting tins and plastic cups. She took a step back to get a better view of the roof. This brought Jasper into vision. His face, as she expected it would be, was critical and meant to be noticed. For her part, she did not have to be told that she was wearing her look, described by him as silly. "Stop it," he ordered. His hand shot out, and her wrist was encircled by hard bone. It hurt. She faced him, undefiant but confident, and said, "I wonder if they will accept us?" And, as she had known he would, he said, "It is a question of whether we will accept them."
She had withstood the test on her, that bony pain, and he let her wrist go and went on to the door. It was a front door, solid and sure of itself, in a little side street full of suburban gardens and similar comfortable houses. They did not have slates missing and broken windows.
"Why, why, why?" asked Alice angrily, addressing the question, probably, to the universe itself, her heart full of pain because of the capacious, beautiful, and unloved house. She dragged her backpack by its strap after her and joined him.
"Profit, of course," he said, and pressed the bell, which did not ring. He gave the door a sharp push and they went into a large shadowy hall where stairs went strongly up, turned at a wide landing, and rose out of sight. The scene was illuminated by a hurricane lamp that stood on the floor, in a comer. From a side room came the sound of soft drumming. Jasper pushed open this door, too. The windows were covered by blankets, leaving not a chink of light. A black youth looked up from his family of drums, his cheeks and teeth shining in candlelight. "Hi," he said, all his fingers and both feet at work, so that it seemed he was dancing as he sat, or was perhaps on some kind of exercise machine.

Gedeelde smart

De hond ligt zachtjes snikkend in zijn mand;

Wij zien uw brief vol wanhoop tegemoet.

Hamlet

Ik hier alleen. Jij in Den Haag.

Wáár heb jij toch zo deeg'lijk leren breien?
Bij Schoevers? bij de Vos? de L. 0. I. ?

„Mrs. Brindle lay on her living-room floor, watching her ceiling billow and blink with the cold, cold colours and the shadows of British Broadcast light. A presumably educative conversation washed across her and she was much too tired to sleep or listen, but that was okay, that was really quite all right.

"What about the etiquette of masturbation? Because everything runs to rules, you know, even the bad old sin of Onan. So what are the rules in this case? About whom may we masturbate?"

"Someone we have only ever seen and never met?"

"Quite common, almost a norm--we feel we are offending no one, we superimpose a personality on a picture, in as far as our dreadful needs must when that particular devil drives, and that's that."

Harold Wilson's baby, friend to the lonely, the Open University.

"How about a casual acquaintance? Someone with whom we have never been intimate and with whom we never will? Someone our attentions would only ever shock?"

"Actually, that's much more rare. We imagine their, shall we say disgust, and find it inhibits us. We steer our thoughts another way."

Mrs. Brindle rolled onto her stomach, noticing vaguely how stiffened and tender her muscles had grown. Women of her age were not intended to rest on floors. Beside her head, the moving picture of a man with too much hair grinned clear across the screen. Video recorders were catching his every detail in who could tell how many homes where students and other interested parties were now sensibly unconscious in their beds, their learning postponed to coincide with convenience. Mrs. Brindle didn't care about education, she cared about company. She was here and almost watching, almost listening, because she could not be asleep. Other people studied at their leisure and worked towards degrees, Mrs. Brindle avoided the presence of night.

"On the other hand, we are highly likely to make imaginary use," the voice was soft, jovially clandestine, deep in the way that speech heard under water might be, "of someone with whom we intend to be intimate."

Uit: The Gentleman From San Francisco (Vertaald door S. S. Koteliansky en Leonard Woolf)

„THE gentleman from San Francisco nobody either in Capri or Naples ever remembered his name was setting out with his wife and daughter for the Old World, to spend there two years of pleasure.

He was fully convinced of his right to rest, to enjoy long and comfortable travels, and so forth. Because, in the first place he was rich, and in the second place, notwithstanding his fifty-eight years, he was just starting to live. Up to the present he had not lived, but only existed ; quite well, it is true, yet with all his hopes on the future. He had worked incessantly and the Chinamen whom he employed by the thousand in his factories knew what that meant. Now at last he realized that a great deal had been accomplished, and that he had almost reached the level of those whom he had taken as his ideals, so he made up his mind to pause for a breathing space. Men of his class usually began their

enjoyments with a trip to Europe, India, Egypt.

He decided to do the same. He wished naturally to reward himself in the first place for all his years of toil, but he was quite glad that his wife and daughter should also share in his pleasures.

True, his wife was not distinguished by any marked susceptibilities, but then elderly American women are all passionate travellers. As for his daughter, a girl no longer young and somewhat delicate, travel was really necessary for her : apart from the question of health, do not happy meetings often take place in the course of travel ? One may find one's self sitting next to a multimillionaire at table, or examining frescoes side by side with him. The itinerary planned by the Gentleman of San Francisco was extensive. In December and January he hoped to enjoy the sun of southern Italy, the monuments of antiquity, the tarantella, the serenades of vagrant minstrels, and, finally, that which men of his age are most susceptible to, the love of quite young Neapolitan girls, even when the love is not altogether disinterestedly

given. Carnival he thought of spending in Nice, in Monte Carlo, where at that season gathers the most select society, the precise society on which depend all the blessings of civilization the fashion in evening dress, the stability of thrones, the declaration of wars, the prosperity of hotels ; where some devote themselves passionately to automobile and boat races, others to roulette, others to what is called flirtation, and others to the shooting of pigeons which beautifully soar from their traps over emerald lawns, against a background of forget-me-not sea, instantly to fall, hitting the ground in little white heaps.“

À travers l'étendue il roule maintenant ;
On n'entend rien sortir, ni clameurs ni sanglots

Of misschien iets heel dieps, wij zullen

Trotse tomaten

De tomatenplant die ik voor de
Zomer kocht, heeft inmiddels
Vijf perfecte tomaten opgeleverd

Zwaar en vlezig en zoet

Een laatste, nummer zes, hangt
Zich nu te haasten – van slap
Oranje naar morgen rood en
Zelfverzekerd, want zo zien
Rijpe tomaten er toch wel uit:

Trots.

Uit: Remembering Edward Said

„Edward Said was a longstanding friend and comrade. We first met in 1972, at a seminar in New York. Even in those turbulent times, one of the features that distinguished him from the rest of us was his immaculate dress sense: everything was meticulously chosen, down to the socks. It is almost impossible to visualize him any other way. At a conference in his honour in Beirut in 1997, Edward insisted on accompanying Elias Khoury and myself for a swim. As he walked out in his swimming trunks, I asked why the towel did not match. ‘When in Rome’, he replied, airily; but that evening, as he read an extract from the Arabic manuscript of his memoir Out of Place, his attire was faultless. It remained so till the end, throughout his long battle with leukaemia.

Over the last eleven years one had become so used to his illness—the regular hospital stays, the willingness to undergo trials with the latest drugs, the refusal to accept defeat—that one began to think him indestructible. Last year, purely by chance, I met Said’s doctor in New York. In response to my questions, he replied that there was no medical explanation for Edward’s survival. It was his indomitable spirit as a fighter, his will to live, that had preserved him for so long. Said travelled everywhere. He spoke, as always, of Palestine, but also of the unifying capacities of the three cultures, which he would insist had a great deal in common. The monster was devouring his insides but those who came to hear him could not see the process, and we who knew preferred to forget. When the cursed cancer finally took him the shock was intense.“

Une force supérieure me pousse.

Glory

and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

                       —Psalms 19:1

Sometimes, late night, the middle of January

maybe, I get home, everything’s quiet, the cows

aren’t in the pasture out back, all the lights

turned off as far as I can see, the packed snow

crunches underfoot as I step away from the car

and slam the door, but not quite a crunch, almost

a kind of squeak, it’s that cold, and then, cold

as it is, I stand beside the car and lift my head

to look up at the sky, not a cloud, a high wind’s

blown the heavens clear, and all the stars are weaving

the way I’d weave heading across the yard

and up the stairs, the warm air, the faint trace of

heating oil, the rumpled bed at the end of the hall,

but now the stars dance their little dance and,

my God, it’s cold, and I’m here, and that’s

just about the best a man could ever care about.

Country Music

Mothers and dogs die, and fathers too; in the fullness of time

they all do. Wives and husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, and lovers

run away or break your heart. Someday, someone will smash

your car, your truck, whether it’s some dumb-ass in an SUV

or only a deer whose trajectory through life has the misfortune

of intersecting yours a few feet this side of the shoulder—

crumpled fender, bent frame, or just a broken headlight, your baby

ain’t the same, and, even apart from the increase you know

your premium will reflect the next time the bill comes due,

it hurts. At some point in your life, unless you’re someone

I’d never want to sit next to and sip a beer, you’ve felt

a little sad and maybe lonely when you’ve heard a train whistle

keening through the trees on a dark October night. At three o’clock

the wind batters rain against the bedroom window, debris

from the porch roof clatters on the pane, and you lie awake

thinking about how years ago you might have done something

different than the way you did it and rehearsing the many ways

your life might’ve changed. But would you give up the feeling

you get listening to the slow breath beside you, reassuring,

keeping you in bed when part of you wants to get up, get

the bottle and sit at the kitchen table with only a smudge of light

coming in from the one lamp you’ve switched on in the living room,

listening to that wind, those twigs and branches racketing

against the glass and clapboard—would you, could you

be any happier, really? A piece of pie, maybe, some stale

remnants of a birthday cake. Instead, you lie in bed, hear

the faint strains of a fiddle, the twang of a Telecaster,

and in the wind the wailing sound of a pedal steel guitar,

all of this put to music—this life you’ve maybe lived.

In Memory Of My Mother

I do not think of you lying in the wet clay

Of a Monaghan graveyard; I see

You walking down a lane among the poplars

On your way to the station, or happily

Going to second Mass on a summer Sunday -

You meet me and you say:

'Don't forget to see about the cattle - '

Among your earthiest words the angels stray.

And I think of you walking along a headland

Of green oats in June,

So full of repose, so rich with life -

And I see us meeting at the end of a town

On a fair day by accident, after

The bargains are all made and we can walk

Together through the shops and stalls and markets

Free in the oriental streets of thought.

O you are not lying in the wet clay,

For it is a harvest evening now and we

Are piling up the ricks against the moonlight

And you smile up at us - eternally.

Primrose

Upon a bank I sat, a child made seer

Of one small primrose flowering in my mind.

Better than wealth it is, I said, to find

One small page of Truth's manuscript made clear.

I looked at Christ transfigured without fear--

The light was very beautiful and kind,

And where the Holy Ghost in flame had signed

I read it through the lenses of a tear.

And then my sight grew dim, I could not see

The primrose that had lighted me to Heaven,

And there was but the shadow of a tree

Ghostly among the stars. The years that pass

Like tired soldiers nevermore have given

Moments to see wonders in the grass.

BOLIVÁR   (Fragment)

A Greek Poem

And shall I now despair that to this very day no one has
understood, has wanted, has been able to understand
    what I say?
Shall the fate then be the same for what I say now of Bolivar,
that I’ll say tomorrow of Androutsos?
Besides, it’s no easy thing for figures of the importance of
Androutsos and Bolivar to be so quickly understood,
Symbols of a like.
But let’s move on quickly: for Heaven’s sake, no emotion,
    exaggeration or despair.
Of no concern, my voice was destined for the ages alone.
(In the future, the near, the distant, in years to come, a few,
many, perhaps from the day after tomorrow or the day
    after that,
Until the time that, empty and useless and dead, the Earth
begins to drift in the firmament,
The young, with mathematical precision, will awake in their
    beds on wild nights,
Moistening their pillows with tears, wondering at who I was,
    reflecting
That once I existed, what words I said, what songs I sang.
And the gigantic waves that every evening break on Hydra’s
    seven shores,
And the savage rocks, and the high mountain that brings down
    the blizzards,
Will eternally and untiringly thunder my name.)

But let’s get back to Simon Bolivar.

Bolivar! A name of metal and wood, you were a flower in
    the gardens of South America.
You had all the gentleness of flowers in your heart, in your
    hair, in your gaze.
Your hand was huge like your heart, and scattered both good
    and evil.
You swept through the mountains and the stars trembled, you
came down to the plains, with your gold finery, your
epaulets, all the insignia of your rank,
With a rifle hanging on your shoulder, with chest bared, with
    your body covered in wounds,
And stark naked you sat on a low rock, at the sea’s edge,
And they came and painted you in the ways of Indian braves,
With wash, half white, half blue, so you’d appear like a lonely
chapel on one of Attica’s shores,
Like a church in the districts of Tatavla, like a palace in a
    deserted Macedonian town.

Cet écueil me brisa, ce bord surgit funeste,
Ma fortune sombra dans ce calme trompeur ;

The Rose

As late each flower that sweetest blows

I pluck'd, the Garden's pride!

Within the petals of a Rose

A sleeping Love I 'spied.

Around his brows a beamy wreath

Of many a lucent hue;

All purple glow'd his cheek, beneath,

Inebriate with the dew.

I softly seiz'd th' unguarded Power,

Nor scar'd his balmy rest:

And plac'd him, cag'd within the flower,

On spotless Sara's breast.

But when unweeting of the guile

Awoke the pris'ner sweet,

He struggled to escape awhile

And stamp'd his faery feet.

Ah! soon the soul entrancing sight

Subdued th' impatient boy!

He gaz'd! he thrill'd with deep delight!

Then clapp'd his wings for joy.

'And O!' he cried -- 'Of magic kind

What charms this Throne endear!

Some other Love let Venus find

I'll fix my empire here.'

Child's Evening Prayer

Ere on my bed my limbs I lay,

God grant me grace my prayers to say:

O God! preserve my mother dear

In strength and health for many a year;

And, O! preserve my father too,

And may I pay him reverence due;

And may I my best thoughts employ

To be my parents' hope and joy;

And, O! preserve my brothers both

From evil doings and from sloth,

And may we always love each other,

Our friends, our father, and our mother,

And still, O Lord, to me impart

An innocent and grateful heart,

That after my last steep I may

Awake to thy eternal day! Amen.

De Duitse schrijver en criticus
Martin Roda Becher werd geboren in New York op 21 oktober 1944.
