Huil mijn lied

Huil mijn lied

in eenzaamheid

vernietig vader, jongens

en haar majesteit

schenk taal als suïcide

o onrecht

zo solide

met steeds meer

straf verzwaard

ik hou van jou

dood alleen die

dit verjaart.

Dood

Ieder gesprek

is een bevestiging

van jouw dood

en ik voel mij

deelgenoot

van de nacht

die ik voorbij

zag gaan

de zon verscheen

hopeloos

voor je geopend raam

het verlangen

werd voortgezet

in de vier letters

van ons alfabet

Lone Some

jongens, jongens, jongens, jongens!

ik kom slechts meisjesjongens tegen

is er waarachtig leed?

of kent de tijd verlegenheid?

Air vif

Derniers poèmes d’amour.

J’ai regardé devant moi
Dans la foule je t’ai vue
Parmi les blés je t’ai vue

Sous un arbre je t’ai vue

Au bout de tous mes voyages
Au fond de tous mes tourments
Au tournant de tous les rires
Sortant de l’eau et du feu

L’été l’hiver je t’ai vue
Dans ma maison je t’ai vue
Entre mes bras je t’ai vue
Dans mes rêves je t’ai vue

Je ne te quitterai plus.

Uit: My aunt died (Vertaald door Sean Hughes)

“My aunt died of an illness that started as pain in her back. She lay awake every night unable to get comfortable in her bed. She piled pillows against the headboard, had a glass of water and pain relievers ready on the nightstand. She figured it was muscle pain or ordinary stiffness. She waited too long before going to the doctor. He did some tests and admitted her quite quickly afterwards. She stayed in the hospital for a little over three weeks and then died. It had been spreading for a long time. She always did so much; made preserves, baked, and fried klejner. She said that the kitchen counter was too low and that it was because of that.

Her husband, my uncle, died in a traffic accident many years beforehand. It was a hot summer day and he was alone in the car. He waved a wasp away while he was driving. A female bicyclist saw how it happened. He lost control and drove head-on into a tree. The car burst into flames but he was already dead. Half of his body stuck out through the windshield. Sometimes we would drive by that tree during summer vacation. We kids sat in the back, my father slowed down. It was an oak tree.”

Uit: Trial by Combat

„When Emily Johnson came home one evening to her furnished room and found three of her best handkerchiefs missing from the dresser drawer, she was sure who had taken them and what to do. She had lived in the furnished room for about six weeks and for the past two weeks she had been

missing small things occasionally. There had been several handkerchiefs gone, and an initial pin which Emily rarely wore and which had come from the five-and-ten. And once she had missed a small bottle of perfume and one of a set of china dogs. Emily had known for some time who was taking the

things, but it was only tonight that she had decided what to do. She had hesitated about complaining to the landlady because her losses were trivial and because she had felt certain that sooner or later she would know how to deal with the situation herself. It had seemed logical to her from the beginning

that the one person in the rooming-house who was home all day was the most likely suspect, and then, one Sunday morning, coming downstairs from the roof, where she had been sitting in the sun, Emily had seen someone come out of her room and go down the stairs, and had recognized the visitor.

Tonight, she felt, she knew just what to do. She took off her coat and hat, put her packages down, and, while a can of tamales was heating on her electric plate, she went over what she intended to say.

After her dinner, she closed and locked her door and went downstairs. She tapped softly on the door of the room directly below her own, and when she thought she heard someone say,

“Come in,” she said, “Mrs. Allen?,” then opened the door carefully and stepped inside.“

Winter

Die Kälte kann wahrlich brennen

Wie Feuer. Die Menschenkinder

Im Schneegestöber rennen

Und laufen immer geschwinder.

Oh, bittre Winterhärte!

Die Nasen sind erfroren,

Und die Klavierkonzerte

Zerreißen uns die Ohren.

Weit besser ist es im Summer,

Da kann ich im Walde spazieren,

Allein mit meinem Kummer,

Und Liebeslieder skandieren.

Sie saßen und tranken am Teetisch

Sie saßen und tranken am Teetisch,
Und sprachen von Liebe viel.
Die Herren waren ästhetisch,
Die Damen von zartem Gefühl.

Die Liebe muß sein platonisch,
Der dürre Hofrat sprach.
Die Hofrätin lächelt ironisch,
Und dennoch seufzet sie: Ach!

Der Domherr öffnet den Mund weit:
Die Liebe sei nicht zu roh,
Sie schadet sonst der Gesundheit.
Das Fräulein lispelt: Wie so?

Die Gräfin spricht wehmütig:
Die Liebe ist eine Passion!
Und präsentieret gütig
Die Tasse dem Herrn Baron.

Am Tische war noch ein Plätzchen;
Mein Liebchen, da hast du gefehlt.
Du hättest so hübsch, mein Schätzchen,
Von deiner Liebe erzählt.

Uit: The Book of Chameleons (Vertaald door Daniel Hahn)

“My dear friend,

I do hope this letter finds you in excellent health. I realise that what I’m writing you isn’t really a letter, but an email. No one writes letters any more these days. But to tell you the truth, I do miss those days when people communicated by exchanging letters - real letters, on good paper, to which you might add a drop of perfume, or attach dried flowers, coloured feathers, a lock of hair. I feel a flicker of nostalgia for those days, when the postman used to bring our letters to the house, and we were glad, surprised to see what we’d received, what we opened and read, and at the care we took when we replied, choosing each word, weighing it up, assessing its light, feeling its fragrance, because we knew that every word would later be weighed up, studied, smelled, tasted, and that some might even escape the maelstrom of time, to be re-read many years later. I can’t stand the rude informality of emails. I always feel horror, physical horror, metaphysical and moral horror, when I see that ‘Hi!’ - how can we possibly take seriously anyone who addresses us like that? Those European travellers who spent the nineteenth century travelling across the backwoods of Africa always used to refer jokingly to the elaborate greetings exchanged by the native guides when - during the course of a long journey - they happened to cross paths with a friend or relative in some favourably shady spot. The white man would wait impatiently, until after several long minutes of laughter, interjections and clapping had passed, he finally interrupted the guide:

‘So what did the men say? Have they seen Livingstone or not?’

‘Oh, no, they haven’t said anything about that, boss,’ the guide explained. “They were just saying hello.’

I expect just that time-span from a letter. Let us pretend that this is a letter, and that the postman has just handed it to you. Perhaps it would smell of the fear that nowadays people sweat and breathe in this vast, rotting apple. The sky here is dark, and low. I keep making wishes that clouds like these might float over to Luanda, a perpetual mist which would suit your sensitive skin; and wishes too that your business carries on, full steam ahead. I’m sure it must do, as we all so need a good past, especially those people who misgovern us in our sad country, as they govern it.

I always think of the lovely Ângela Lúcia (I do think she is beautiful) as I beat my way rather disheartened through the anxious chaos of these streets. Perhaps she’s right, perhaps the important thing is to bear witness not to the darkness (as I’ve always done) but to the light.”

Fall of the Evening Star

Speak softly; sun going down

Out of sight. Come near me now.

Dear dying fall of wings as birds

complain against the gathering dark...

Exaggerate the green blood in grass;

the music of leaves scraping space;

Multiply the stillness by one sound;

by one syllable of your name...

And all that is little is soon giant,

all that is rare grows in common beauty

To rest with my mouth on your mouth

as somewhere a star falls

And the earth takes it softly, in natural love...

Exactly as we take each other...

and go to sleep...

Be Music, Night

Be music, night,

That her sleep may go

Where angels have their pale tall choirs

Be a hand, sea,

That her dreams may watch

Thy guidesman touching the green flesh of the world

Be a voice, sky,

That her beauties may be counted

And the stars will tilt their quiet faces

Into the mirror of her loveliness

Be a road, earth,

That her walking may take thee

Where the towns of heaven lift their breathing spires

O be a world and a throne, God,

That her living may find its weather

And the souls of ancient bells in a child's book

Shall lead her into Thy wondrous house

Ein Erlebnis Kants

Eines Tags geschah es Kant,
daß er keine Worte fand.

Stundenlang hielt er den Mund,
und er schwieg, nicht ohne Grund.

Im fiel absolut nichts ein,
drum ließ er das Reden sein.

Erst als man zum Essen rief,
wurd' er wieder kreativ,

und er fand die schönen Worte:
"Gibt es hinterher noch Torte?"

Wenn die weißen Riesenhasen

Wenn die weißen Riesenhasen

abends übern Rasen rasen

und die goldnen Flügelkröten

still in ihren Beeten beten,

wenn die schwarzen Buddelraben

tief in ihrem Graben graben

und die feisten Felsenquallen

kichernd in die Fallen fallen -:

dann schreibt man, wie jedes Jahr,

den hundertzwölften Januar.

Was? Ihr kennt ihn nicht, den Tag?

Schaut mal im Kalender nach!

Buikpijn

als ik buikpijn had
vroeger
legde je je handen

en de pijn verdween

ik heb mijn handen

niet weg nemen

in één nacht waren
mijn handen te klein
geworden

terwijl ze toch groter waren
dan toen ik buikpijn had
vroeger

Uit: The 12 Chairs

„There were so many hairdressing establishments and funeral homes in the regional centre of N. that the inhabitants seemed to be born merely in order to have a shave, get  their  hair cut, freshen up their  heads with toilet water and then die. In actual fact,  people came into the world, shaved, and died rather rarely  in  the regional centre  of N. Life in  N. was extremely quiet. The  spring evenings  were  delightful,  the  mud  glistened  like anthracite in the light of the moon,  and all the young men of the town were so much  in love with the secretary  of  the communal-service workers' local committee that she found difficulty in collecting their subscriptions.

Matters  of  life  and   death  did  not  worry   Ippolit  Matveyevich Vorobyaninov,  although  by the nature of his  work he  dealt with them from nine till five every day, with a half-hour break for lunch.

Each morning, having drunk  his ration of hot  milk brought  to him  by Claudia  Ivanovna in  a  streaky  frosted-glass tumbler,  he  left the dingy little house and went outside  into the vast  street bathed  in weird spring sunlight; it was called Comrade Gubernsky Street. It was the nicest kind  of street  you  can  find in regional  centres. On the left you could  see  the coffins of the Nymph Funeral Home  glittering with silver through undulating green-glass panes. On the right, the dusty, plain oak  coffins of Bezenchuk, the undertaker, reclined sadly behind small windows from which the putty was peeling  off. Further  up, "Master Barber Pierre and  Constantine"  promised customers  a "manicure" and  "home curlings". Still further on  was  a hotel with  a  hairdresser's,  and beyond  it  a  large  open  space  in  which  a straw-coloured calf stood tenderly licking the rusty sign propped up against a solitary gateway. The sign read: Do-Us-the-Honour Funeral Home.

Although  there  were  many  funeral  homes,  their  clientele  was not wealthy.  The  Do-Us-the-Honour  had gone  broke three years before  Ippolit Matveyevich settled in the town of N., while Bezenchuk drank like a fish and had once tried to pawn his best sample coffin.

People rarely died  in  the  town of N. Ippolit  Matveyevich knew  this better than anyone because he worked in the registry office, where he was in charge of the registration of deaths and marriages.“

Uit: A Japanese Story-Teller

„Somewhere near the centre in a sort of market-place, I noticed, among all the tumult of movement and babble and talk, what appeared to be a place of calm and orderly arrangement of men, women and children, squatting or sitting on their knees, apart from the rest and deeply absorbed in something seemingly invisible. I was strangely drawn towards them and compelled to ask Mr Tajima to take me there.

The not inconsiderable group of people, so absorbed that they did not notice our arrival, were there at the feet of a man sitting on a yellow mat talking in a low, clear voice. He was dressed in a golden kimono, held with a broad sash woven of green and red round the middle. It was a far more abundant garment than usual, and lay with ample folds around him that overruled any shape or movement of his body within, and fell wide to the ground to disguise even the way he sat. In this sense he was more like a monument of singular authority rather than the man himself. This authority was immeasurably increased by the head and face above the dress. It was the face of an old man with features of a cast so old that it seemed beyond measure of antiquity that I possessed regarding the history of Japan. He looked, in fact, like one of those philosophers, statesmen, poets or resolved servants of the earliest emperors of China, serving, in exile from the people they loved and all that they valued, on the frontier of some remote province among the barbaric subjects of their imperial masters. They did so with such absolute committment that some of the most moving and healing poetry of classical China before its age of `troubles' came from their philosophical brush to convey a quality which seemed personified in the man now talking with such hypnotic power to the little gathering. His skin was like an ancient parchment, covered with innumerable creases and lines as of sensitive writing describing a long record of complex experience of life, and so exacting a metamorphosis of its hurt, injury, conflict and, perhaps even most demanding, the pull of its pleasures.“

„The lady Missionaries expected me. They sent an enormous Irishman in a tiny canoe to meet the steamer. We got to the Ucluelet wharf soon after dawn. Everything was big and cold and strange to me, a fifteen-year-old school girl. I was the only soul on the wharf. The Irishman did not have any trouble deciding which was I.

It was low tide, so there was a long, sickening ladder with slimy rungs to climb down to get to the canoe. The man's big laugh and the tippiness of the canoe were even more frightening than the ladder. The paddle in his great arms rushed the canoe through the waves.

We came to Toxis, which was the Indian name for the Mission House. It stood just above hightide water. The sea was in front of it and the forest behind.

The house was of wood, unpainted. There were no blinds or curtains. It looked, as we paddled up to it, as if it were stuffed with black. When the canoe stuck in the mud, the big Irishman picked me up in

his arms and set me down on the doorstep.

The Missionaries were at the door. Smells of cooking fish jumped out past them. People lived on fish at Ucluelet.

Both the Missionaries were dignified, but the Greater Missionary had the most dignity. They had long noses straddled by spectacles, thin lips, mild eyes, and wore straight, dark dresses buttoned to

the chin.

There was only two of everything in the kitchen, so I had to sit on a box, drink from a bowl and eat my food out of a tin pie-dish.“
