Sonnets At Christmas I

This is the day His hour of life draws near,

Let me get ready from head to foot for it

Most handily with eyes to pick the year

For small feed to reward a feathered wit.

Some men would see it an epiphany

At ease, at food and drink, others at chase

Yet I, stung lassitude, with ecstasy

Unspent argue the season's difficult case

So: Man, dull critter of enormous head,

What would he look at in the coiling sky?

But I must kneel again unto the Dead

While Christmas bells of paper white and red,

Figured with boys and girls spilt from a sled,

Ring out the silence I am nourished by.

Sonnets At Christmas II

Ah, Christ, I love you rings to the wild sky

And I must think a little of the past:

When I was ten I told a stinking lie

That got a black boy whipped; but now at last

The going years, caught in an accurate glow,

Reverse like balls englished upon green baize-

Let them return, let the round trumpets blow

The ancient crackle of the Christ's deep gaze.

Deafened and blind, with senses yet unfound,

Am I, untutored to the after-wit

Of knowledge, knowing a nightmare has no sound;

Therefore with idle hands and head I sit

In late December before the fire's daze

Punished by crimes of which I would be quit.

Uit: Me Talk Pretty One Day

„Anyone who watches even the slightest amount of TV is familiar with the scene: An agent knocks on the door of some seemingly ordinary home or office. The door opens, and the person holding the knob is asked to identify himself. The agent then says, "I'm going to ask you to come with me."
They're always remarkably calm, these agents. If asked "Why do I need to go anywhere with you?" they'll straighten their shirt cuffs or idly brush stray hairs from the sleeves of their sport coats and say, "Oh, I think we both know why."
The suspect then chooses between doing things the hard way and doing things the easy way, and the scene ends with either gunfire or the gentlemanly application of handcuffs. Occasionally it's a case of mistaken identity, but most often the suspect knows exactly why he's being taken. It seems he's been expecting this to happen. The anticipation has ruled his life, and now, finally, the wait is over. You're sometimes led to believe that this person is actually relieved, but I've never bought it. Though it probably has its moments, the average day spent in hiding is bound to beat the average day spent in prison. When it comes time to decide who gets the bottom bunk, I think anyone would agree that there's a lot to be said for doing things the hard way.
The agent came for me during a geography lesson. She entered the room and nodded at my fifth-grade teacher, who stood frowning at a map of Europe. What would needle me later was the realization that this had all been prearranged. My capture had been scheduled to go down at exactly 2:30 on a Thursday afternoon. The agent would be wearing a dung-colored blazer over a red knit turtleneck, her heels sensibly low in case the suspect should attempt a quick getaway.
"David," the teacher said, "this is Miss Samson, and she'd like you to go with her now."

Uit: The Swan Thieves

„John ran through the list: a mood stabilizer, an antianxiety drug, and an antidepressant, all at good doses. I picked up a pen and pad from my desk.
"Diagnosis?"
John told me, and I wasn't surprised. "Fortunately for us, he signed a release of information in the ER while he was still talking. We've also just gotten copies of records from a psychiatrist in North Carolina he saw about two years ago. Apparently the last time he saw anybody."
"Does he have significant anxiety?"
"Well, he won't talk about it, but I think he shows it. And this isn't his first round of meds, according to the file. In fact, he arrived here with some Klonopin in a two-year-old bottle in his jacket. It probably wasn't doing him much good without a mood stabilizer on board. We finally got hold of the wife in North Carolina — ex-wife, actually — and she told us some more about his past treatments."
"Suicidal?"
"Possibly. It's hard to do a proper assessment, since he won't talk. He hasn't attempted anything here. He's more like enraged. It's like keeping a bear in a cage — a silent bear. But with this kind of presentation, I don't want to just release him. He's got to stay somewhere for a while, have someone figure out what's really going on, and his meds will need fine-tuning. He did sign in voluntarily, and I bet he'll go pretty willingly at this point. He doesn’t like it here."
"So you think I can get him to talk?" It was our old joke, and John rose obligingly to it.
"Marlow, you could get a stone to talk."
"Thanks for the compliment. And thanks especially for messing up my lunch break. Does he have insurance?"
"Some. The social worker is on that."

"All right — have him brought out to Goldengrove. Tomorrow at two, with the files. I'll check him in."

Uit: The Colossus of Maroussi

"I got into my things and hurried to the restaurant near the fountain. The waiter seemed to expect me and stood ready to translate for me into that Iroquois English which the itinerant Greek has acquired in the course of his wanderings. I ordered some cold fish with the skin on it and a bottle of dark-red Cretan wine. While waiting to be served I noticed a man peering through the large plate-glass window; he walked away and came back again in a few minutes. Finally he made his mind up to walk in. He walked directly up to my table and addressed me -- in English. Was I not Mr. Miller who had arrived by plane a few hours ago? I was. He begged leave to introduce himself. He was Mr. So-and-So, the British Vice-Consul at Herakleion. He had noticed that I was an American, a writer. He was always happy to make the acquaintance of an American. He paused for a moment, as if embarrassed, and then went on to say that his sole motive for introducing himself was to let me know that as long as I remained in Crete, I was to consider his humble services entirely at my disposal. He said that he was originally from Smyrna and that every Greek from Smyrna was eternally indebted to the American people. He said that there was no favour too great for me to ask of him.
x x"The natural reply was to ask him to sit down and share a meal with me, which I did. He explained that he would be unable to accept the honour as he was obliged to dine in the bosom of his family, but -- would I do him the honor of taking a coffee with him and his wife at their home after dinner? As the representative of the great American people (not at all sure of the heroic role we had played in the great disaster at Smyrna) I most graciously accepted, rose, bowed, shook his hand and escorted him to the door where once again we exchanged polite thanks and mutual felicitations.

Einsicht

Dreifach sind wir angepisst:
Feigheit, Blödheit, Agonie.
Was noch nicht erstunken ist,
wird bestaunt als wie
das gefundne Gerstenkorn

unverwandt blickt es nach vorn
im Auge des Taifuns.

"Bitte recht freundlich!",
sprach der Jäger den Hasen an.
Aus der doppelläufigen Flinte
flatterten piff-paff zwei Vögelchen.

"Immer über das Ziel hinaus!",
lachte der Hase, schlug einige Haken,
kam zwar spät nach Haus, aber
immerhin lebendig.

Uit: The Kingdom of This World (Vertaald door Harriet de Onís)

"Now he understood that a man never knows for whom he suffers and hopes. He suffers and hopes and toils for people he will never know, and who, in turn, will suffer and hope and toil for others who will not be happy either, for man always seeks a happiness far beyond that which is meted out to him. But man's greatness consists in the very fact of wanting to be better than he is. In laying duties upon himself. In the Kingdom of Heaven there is no grandeur to be won, inasmuch as there all is an established hierarchy, the unknown is revealed, existence is infinite, there is no possibility of sacrifice, all is rest and joy. For this reason, bowed down by suffering and duties, beautiful in the midst of his misery, capable of loving in the face of afflictions and trials, man finds his greatness, his fullest measure, only in the Kingdom of this World."

The Lost Dancer

Spatial depths of being survive

The birth to death recurrences

Of feet dancing on earth of sand;

Vibrations of the dance survive

The sand; the sand, elect, survives

The dancer. He can find no source

Of magic adequate to bind

The sand upon his feet, his feet

Upon his dance, his dance upon

The diamond body of his being.

A Certain Man

A certain man wishes to be a prince

Of this earth; he also wants to be

A saint and master of the being-world.

Conscience cannot exist in the first:

The second cannot exist without conscience.

Therefore he, who has enough conscience

To be disturbed but not enough to be

Compelled, can neither reject the one

Nor follow the other...

Je fluisterde ‘t me teder in:

In eeuwig schone liefdeszon
Toen jij zo even van me wegging

Leise Stunde

Was willst du mir denn sagen,

Du grüner, lachender Frühlingstag?

Die muntern Drosseln schlagen

Wie trunken nah im dunkeln Hag.

Mein Acker scheint zu träumen,

Ganz still ist's unter den Bäumen,

Ich hör' der leisen Stunde Schlag.

Sie kommt mit jedem Lenze,

Steigt auf wie ein versunken Gut,

Fern an der Kindheit Grenze

Wandl' ich in treuer Augen Hut.

Ein Duft liegt über den Weiten,

Die heimlichen Glocken läuten:

Du hast es gut, du hast es gut!

Ich seh' der Mutter Hände,

Verwerkt und hart – und doch so weich!

Sie müht sich ohne Ende

Und gibt und gibt und bleibt doch reich.

In Ackers Grund geborgen

Schläft ihr Segnen und Sorgen

Und macht ihn mir zum Märchenreich.

Waldmärchen

Viel liebe Wunder birgt der Wald,

Doch keins, das mich so hold betört

Wie eines Vögleins Schlummerlied,

Dem nichts den Abendfrieden stört.

Schon ist ihm wie ein Traum entrückt

Der laute Tag mit Glück und Not,

Leis zittert um sein Laubversteck

Der Sonne letztes, blasses Rot.

Und reiner, süsser quillt der Sang,

Indes gemach das Gold zerrinnt;

Uit: The Treason of the Intellectuals (Vertaald door Richard Aldington)

„The man of science, the artist, the philosopher are attached to their nations as much as the day-laborer and the merchant. Those who make the world's values, make them for a nation; the Ministers of Jesus defend the national. All humanity including the "clerks," have become laymen. All Europe, including Erasmus, has followed Luther.
I said above that the humanity of the past, more precisely the humanity of Europe in the Middle Ages, with the values imposed upon it by the "clerks," acted ill but honored the good. It may be said that modern Europe with teachers who inform it that its realist instincts are beautiful, acts ill and honors what is ill. Modern Europe is like the brigand in one of Tolstoi's stories, who made his confession to a hermit, and the hermit said in amazement: "Others were at least ashamed of being brigands; but what is to be done with this man, who is proud of it?"
Indeed, if we ask ourselves what will happen to a humanity where every group is striving more eagerly than ever to feel conscious of its own particular interests, and makes its moralists tell it that it is sublime to the extent that it knows no law but this interest—a child can give the answer. This humanity is heading for the greatest and most perfect war ever seen in the word, whether it is a war of nations, or a war of classes. A race of which one group exalts one of its masters (Barrès) to the skies because he teaches: "We must defend the essential part of ourselves as sectarians," while a neighboring group acclaims a leader because, when he attacks a defenseless small nation, he says, "Necessity knows no law"— such a race is ripe for the zoölogical wars Renan talks about, which, he said, would be like the life and death wars which occur among rodents and among the carnivora.“

- Mille trois cents, environ.

The Fatal Sisters (Fragment)

Now the storm begins to lower,

(Haste, the loom of Hell prepares!)

Iron-sleet of arrowy shower

Hurtles in the darkened air.

Glittering lances are the loom,

Where the dusky warp we strain,

Weaving many a soldier's doom,

Orkney's woe and Randver's bane.

See the grisly texture grow,

('Tis of human entrails made!)

And the weights that play below,

Each a gasping warrior's head.

Shafts for shuttles, dipped in gore,

Shoot the trembling cords along.

Sword, that once a monarch bore,

Keep the tissue close and strong.

Mista, black, terrific maid,

Sangrida, and Hilda, see,

Join the wayward work to aid;

'Tis the woof of victory.

Ere the ruddy sun be set,

Pikes must shiver, javelins sing,

Blade with clattering buckler meet,

Hauberk crash, and helmet ring.

(Weave the crimson web of war!)

Let us go, and let us fly

Where our friends the conflict share,

Where they triumph, where they die.

As the paths of fate we tread,

Wading through the ensanguined field,

Gondula and Geira, spread

O'er the youthful king your shield.

Ruf zu Gott

Du, der Licht war vor meinem Tage,
Du, der Klang war vor meiner Klage
In der Gestirne Jubelgesang;

Und es wehen die Lüfte des Lebens,
Und es fliehn die Schauer des Bebens,
Du bist Vater, ich wieder dein Sohn.

Herbstlied

Bunt sind schon die Wälder,

Gelb die Stoppelfelder,

Und der Herbst beginnt.

Rote Blätter fallen,

Graue Nebel wallen,

Kühler weht der Wind.

Wie die volle Traube,

Aus dem Rebenlaube,

Purpurfarbig strahlt!

Am Geländer reifen

Pfirsiche mit Streifen

Rot und weiß bemalt.

Sieh! Wie hier die Dirne

Emsig Pflaum¹ und Birne

In ihr Körbchen legt!

Dort, mit leichten Schritten,

Jene goldne Quitten

In den Landhof trägt!

Flinke Träger springen,

Und die Mädchen singen,

Alles jubelt froh!

Bunte Bänder schweben,

Zwischen hohen Reben,

Auf dem Hut von Stroh!

Geige tönt und Flöte

Bei der Abendröte

Und im Mondenglanz

Junge Winzerinnen

Winken und beginnen

Deutschen Ringeltanz.

Uit: Cruel As The Grave

„Near the end of a dark autumn-day, not many years ago, a young couple, returning from their bridal tour arrived by steamer at the old city of Norfolk; and, taking a hack, drove directly to the best inn.

They were attended by the gentleman's valet and the lady's maid, and encumbered besides with a great amount of baggage, so that altogether their appearance was so promising that the landlord of the "Anchor" came forward in person to receive them and bow them into the best parlor.

The gentleman registered himself and his party as Mr. and Mrs. Lyon Berners, of Black Hall, Virginia, and two servants.

"We shall need a private parlor and chamber communicating for our own use, and a couple of bedrooms for our servants," said Mr. Berners, as he handed his hat and cane to the bowing waiter.

"They shall be prepared immediately," answered the polite landlord.

"We shall remain here only for the night, and go on in the morning, and should like to have two inside and two outside places secured in the Staunton stage-coach for to-morrow."

"I will send and take them at once, sir."

"Thanks. We should also like tea got ready as soon as possible in our private parlor."

"Certainly, sir. What would you like for tea?"

"Oh, anything you please, so that it is nice and neatly served," said Mr. Berners, with a slightly impatient wave of his hand as if he would have been rid of his obsequious host.

"Ah-ha! anything I please! It is easy to see what ails him. He lives upon love just now; but he'll care more about his bill of fare a few weeks hence," chuckled the landlord, as he left the public parlor to

execute his guest's orders.“

La bourrasque d'été (Fragment)

Les cris de la corneille ont annoncé l'orage ;

Des nuages monter dans les airs embrasés ;

Christmas Greetings 1941 (Marie Under)

De geboorte van Christus, Federico Barocci, rond 1597

Christmas Greetings 1941

I walk the silent, Christmas-snowy path
that goes across the homeland in its suffering.
At each doorstep I would like to bend my knee:
there is no house that knows not mourning's sting.

The spark of anger flickers in sorrow's ashes,
the mind is hard with anger, soft with pain:
there is no way of being pure as Christmas
on this white, pure-as-Christmas lane.

Alas, to have to live such stony instants,
to carry on one's heart a coffin lid!
Not even tears will come now any more -
that gift of mercy also died and hid.

I'm like someone rowing backwards:
eyes permanently set on past -
backwards, yes - yet reaching home at last ...
my kinsmen, though, are left without a home...

I always think of those who were torn from here...
The heavens echo with the cries of their distress.
I think that we are all to blame
for what they lack - for we have food and bed!

Shyly, almost as in figurative language,
I ask without believing it can come to pass:
Can we, I wonder, ever use our minds again
for sake of joy and happiness?

Now light and darkness join each other,
towards the stars the parting day ascends.
The sunset holds the first sign of the daybreak -
It is as if, abruptly, night expands.

All things are ardent, serious and sacred,
snow's silver leaf melts on my lashes' flame,
I feel as though I'm rising ever further:
that star there, is it calling me by name?

And then I sense that on this day they also
are raising eyes to stars, from where I hear
a greeting from my kinsfolk, sisters, brothers,
in pain and yearning from their prison's fear.

This is our talk and dialogue, this only,
a shining signal - oh, read, and read! -
with thousand mouths - as if within their glitter
the stars still held some warmth of breath inside.

The field of snow dividing us grows smaller:
of stars our common language is composed....
It is as if we d started out for one another,
were walking, and would soon meet on the road.

For an instant it will die away, that 'When? When?'
forever pulsing in you in your penal plight,
and we shall meet there on that bridge in heaven,
face to face we'll meet, this Christmas night.

Uit: The Bell Diaries (January 1997)

„As all New Yorkers know The Native has folded. With it Christopher Street, Theatre Week, and Opera Monthly are also no more. I deeply regret their demise. I used to think it so encouraging that Mr. Steele had become a kinky Lord Beaverbrooke at such an early age. It is not of course from any fault of his that his empire has collapsed, but simply because now that kinkiness has become mainstream the unique appeal of such papers as The Native has become obsolete. The "shocking" things it said can now be read in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other respectable daily papers.
Finding myself an orphan, so to speak, I have been instructed by a Mr. Bell to write my diary on Internet. Mr. Bell is employed by — or possibly owns — the brewery in Perth, Scotland, which has adopted the ruse of producing a whisky with my name and my photograph on the label, in an attempt to win the "gay" liquor market of the world. This new enlarged readership of my humble diary alters irrevocably the rather parochial (if it is possible to think of Manhattan as a parish) nature of my diary. What I asked myself could I possibly write that would amuse and inform the whole world?
To start in a small way, I have seen a play called Making Porn to which I was taken by a young man my agent calls "my millionaire". It contains inevitably a lot of well-endowed young men simulating various sex acts, the sight of which I was prepared to greet with a puritanical yawn when a plot emerged. The hero, a man called "Blue Blake" (I think) has a girlfriend (Joanna Keylock) to whom he has represented the films in which he stars as "educational." She is suspicious and demands to see one of them being made. The experience tells her that her lover and his outstanding equipment are the essential ingredients of the film.“

Mein Gesicht sprang mich geradezu vom Buchumschlag an.“

Was arbeitest du da?«
»Verschiedenes.«
»Du kannst mir sagen, was.«
»Verschiednes.«
»Immer diese Antwort - solang wir verheiratet sind. Immer dies Fernhalten.
In praktischen Dingen - gern.

Sein Glöcklein läutet: Gute Nacht;

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Und wie er betet, wie er sinnt,

Fortsäuselt es im Abendwind:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Es säuselt durch den stillen Wald,

Und fern im Grund die Antwort schallt:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Und weiter über Stadt und Strom,

Vom niedern Turm, vom hohen Dom:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Und wie die Sonne westwärts zieht,

Durch Land und Meer erklingt das Lied:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Es läutet um das Erdenrund

Zu jeder Zeit, zu jeder Stund‘:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Es läutet um die weite Welt

Und schwingt sich auf zum Himmelszelt:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Der Stern, der sich dem Sterne naht,

Er ruft ihm zu seinem Pfad:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Und in der Sphären Lobgesang

Erschallt der Gruß mit hellem Klang:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Die Engel all an Gottes Thron,

Sie singen zu der Harfe Ton:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Und all der Sel’gen lichte Reih’n;

Sie neigen sich und stimmen ein:

      Ave Maria, Amen!

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Der Klausner hat sein Werk vollbracht,

Das Glöcklein läutet: gute Nacht;

      Ave Maria, Amen!

Uit: The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge

„When man starts to learn, he is never clear about his objectives. His purpose is faulty; his intent is vague. He hopes for rewards that will never materialize, for he knows nothing of the hardships of learning.

He slowly begins to learn — bit by bit at first, then in big chunks… What he learns is never what he pictured, or imagined, and so he begins to be afraid. Learning is never what one expects… His purpose becomes a battlefield. And thus he has tumbled upon the first of his natural enemies: fear… And if the man, terrified in its presence, runs away, his enemy will have put an end to his quest…

He must be fully afraid, and yet he must not stop. And a moment will come when his first enemy retreats. The man begins to feel sure of himself… Once the man has vanquished fear, he is free from it for the rest of his life, because, instead of fear, he has acquired clarity — a clarity of mind which erases fear.

By then the man knows his desires; he knows how to satisfy those desires. He can anticipate the new steps of learning, and a sharp clarity surrounds everything. The man feels that nothing is concealed. And thus he has encountered his second enemy.“

How sleep the brave

How sleep the brave, who sink to rest

By all their country's wishes blest!

When Spring, with dewy fingers cold,

Returns to deck their hallow'd mould,

She there shall dress a sweeter sod

Than Fancy's feet have ever trod.

By fairy hands their knell is rung;

By forms unseen their dirge is sung;

There Honour comes, a pilgrim grey,

To bless the turf that wraps their clay;

And Freedom shall awhile repair

To dwell, a weeping hermit, there!
