1954

Je was er pas een week of vier
De ouderwetse winterkou
Sloeg bikkelhard de kamer in

Je was de spil van het gezin
De wereld draaide nog om jou
Je leefde, gulzig als een dier

Je moeder in het kraambed lag
Te wachten op de laatste dag

Er werd gebeefd van kou en angst
Je vader was misschien het bangst
Want Oma voerde het gezag

Hij wierp wat plankjes toe naar haar:
Mijn luiers, van de vrieskou zwaar –
Zij brak haar armen bij de vangst

ST. JOZEFSSCHOOL

I

-

In wiens gezag men moeiteloos gelooft

-
Men speelt er nu verantwoord interieur

LENTE IN 'T LAAG EN 'T HOOG

II

Waar pas nog sneeuw de koude grond bedekte;

Terwijl jij Morpheus' armen prefereert
Natuur is onverdragelijk romantisch

Zeemorgen

zilvergroen geschubde meerminnen in bikini

Uit: South of the Border, West of the Sun (Vertaald door Philip Gabriel)

„My birthday's the fourth of January, 1951. The first week of the first month of the first year of the second half of the twentieth century. Something to commemorate, I guess, which is why my parents named me Hajime--"Beginning" in Japanese. Other than that, a 100 percent average birth. My father worked in a large brokerage firm, my mother was a typical housewife. During the war, my father was drafted as a student and sent to fight in Singapore; after the surrender he spent some time in a POW camp. My mother's house was burned down in a B-29 raid during the final year of the war. Their generation suffered most during the long war.

When I was born, though, you'd never have known there'd been a war. No more burned-out ruins, no more occupation army. We lived in a small, quiet town, in a house my father's company provided. The house was prewar, somewhat old but roomy enough. Pine trees grew in the garden, and we even had a small pond and some stone lanterns.

The town I grew up in was your typical middle-class suburb. The classmates I was friendly with all lived in neat little row houses; some might have been a bit larger than mine, but you could count on them all having similar entranceways, pine trees in the garden, the works. My friends' fathers were employed in companies or else were professionals of some sort. Hardly anyone's mother worked. And most everyone had a cat or a dog. No one I knew lived in an apartment or a condo. Later on I moved to another part of town, but it was pretty much identical. The upshot of this is that until I moved to Tokyo to go to college, I was convinced everyone in the whole world lived in a single-family home with a garden and a pet, and commuted to work decked out in a suit. I couldn't for the life of me imagine a different lifestyle.“

Zelfportret

Ik ben voornamelijk van geen belang.
Ik ben een zachte wang,
en ik ben mijn eigen lippen.
Meestal zonder gezang,
uitblinkend in knorgeluiden

Und bezwungen sie mit kleinen Steinchen;

Wilde Teufel sahen wir, sie sangen

Uns die kauderwelschen Friedenslieder

Daß wir ihrer Gutheit lachten –

Ach! wohlthätige Natur!

Ost- und Westwärts – Ueberall!

Sieh! dieß lezte Scheitchen Holz

Leg ich auf – Sein Rauch verschwindet

In die Luft – und Niemand meldet sich – –

Allbedenkende Natur!

Uit: The Trial of True Love

„Here where two rivers meet by an island, in the early morning, shortly after dawn, there is a mist along the valleys. The sun rises over the railway bridge, white as a moon, and everything is still. I stand before Taw pool, watching the water eddy round the island, my breath cloudy and my thoughts far away. I do not anticipate. And yet there is a moment before the moment that is both a preparation and a culmination. What is about to happen to me is long longed-for, familiar, out of reach, needed, despaired of, completely imagined, but never known: so first, and memorably, comes the intimation that it is about to happen. The light falling from an opening door onto a winter's street. The silence before a phone begins to ring. Anticipation, in the razor-cut of time before it bursts into fulfilment.

The Barnstaple train, headlamp furry in the mist, booms suddenly over the bridge. Rooks rattle out of invisible trees, cawing up into the sky. The premonitory sounds disperse into the slow tumble of the rivers, into my own quiet breaths. The smell of soaked grass and the sharp white air that makes me shiver and the silence after the train.

And then I see her.

This is a story about falling in love. The time is 1977, a generation ago. I am twenty-nine years old, and waiting for my real life to begin. I am engaged in this waiting process in the very small second bedroom of a very small flat in Cross Street in north London, owned by my friend Anna.

She comes back earlier than usual and pours herself a glass of wine, which is not like her, not at five in the afternoon, and says we must talk. So I have a glass of wine too, and we talk.“

„It all came to me one election day. It was on a warm California afternoon, and I had ridden down into the Valley of the Moon from the ranch to the little village to vote yes and no to a host of proposed amendments to the Constitution of the State of California. Because of the warmth of the day I had had several drinks before casting my ballot, and divers drinks after casting it. Then I had ridden up through the vine-clad hills and rolling pastures of the ranch and arrived at the farmhouse in time for another drink and supper.
“How did you vote on the suffrage amendment?” Charmian asked.
“I voted for it.”
She uttered an exclamation of surprise. For be it known, in my younger days, despite my ardent democracy, I had been opposed to woman suffrage. In my later and more tolerant years I had been unenthusiastic in my acceptance of it as an inevitable social phenomenon.
“Now just why did you vote for it?” Charmian asked.
I answered. I answered at length. I answered indignantly. The more I answered, the more indignant I became. (No; I was not drunk. The horse I had ridden was well-named “The Outlaw.” I ’d like to see any drunken man ride her.)
And yet—how shall I say?—I was lighted up, I was feeling “good,” I was pleasantly jingled.
“When the women get the ballot, they will vote for prohibition,” I said. “It is the wives, and sisters, and mothers, and they only, who will drive the nails into the coffin of John Barleycorn—”

“But I thought you were a friend to John Barleycorn,” Charmian interpolated.
“I am. I was. I am not. I never am. I am never less his friend than when he is with me and when I seem most his friend. He is the king of liars. He is the frankest truth-sayer. He is the august companion with whom one walks with the gods. He is also in league with the Noseless One. His way leads to truth naked, and to death. He gives clear vision, and muddy dreams. He is the enemy of life, and the teacher of wisdom beyond life’s vision. He is a red-handed killer, and he slays youth.”

Uit: The Living Death

„Here is a very serious reason, my dear sisters, why at last, after an absence of twenty years in America, I am confiding to you this strange secret in the life of our beloved and lamented father, and

of the old house where we were children together.  The truth is, if I read rightly the countenances of my physicians as they whisper to each other by the window of the chamber in which I am lying, that

only a few days of this life remain to me.

It is not right that this secret should die with me, my dear sisters.  Though it will seem terrible to you, as it has to me, it will enable you to better understand our blessed father, help you to account for what must have seemed to you to be strange inconsistencies in his character.  That this secret was revealed to me was due to my indolence and childish curiosity.

For the first, and the last, time in my life I listened at a keyhole.  With shame and a hotly chiding conscience I yielded to that insatiable curiosity--and when you have read these lines you will understand why I do not regret that inexcusable, furtive act.

I was only a lad when we went to live in that odd little house. You remember it stood in the outskirts of Rakos, near the new cemetery.  It stood on a deep lot, and was roughly boarded on the side which looked on the highway.  You remember that on the first floor, next the street, were the room of our father, the dining room, and the children's room.  In the rear of the house was the sculpture studio. There we had the large white hall with big windows, where white-clothed laborers worked.  They mixed the plaster, made forms, chiseled, scratched, and sawed.  Here in this large hall had our father worked for thirty years.“

Que l'on croit voir ce qu'on entend ;

Qui savez que c'est la manière

Dont quelque chose est inventé,

Qui beaucoup plus que la matière

De tout Récit fait la beauté,

Vous aimerez ma fable et sa moralité ;

Niets behalve die even aangename windvlaag

dreunde keihard door me heen

het was de kaars, die

binnen in mij al vele jaren scheen.

Uit: Shades of Grey

„It began with my father not wanting to see the Last Rabbit and ended up with my being eaten by a carnivorous plant. It wasn’t really what I’d planned for myself— I’d hoped to marry into the Oxbloods and join their dynastic string empire. But that was four days ago, before I met Jane, retrieved the Caravaggio and explored High Saffron. So instead of enjoying aspirations of Chromatic advancement, I was wholly immersed within the digestive soup of a yateveo tree. It was all frightfully inconvenient.
But it wasn’t
all
bad, for the following reasons: First, I was lucky to have landed upside down. I would drown in under a minute, which was far, far preferable to being dissolved alive over the space of a few weeks. Second, and more important, I wasn’t going to die ignorant. I had discovered something that no amount of merits can buy you: the truth. Not the whole truth, but a pretty big part of it. And that was why this was all frightfully inconvenient. I wouldn’t get to do anything with it. And this truth was too big and too terrible to ignore. Still, at least I’d held it in my hands for a full hour and understood what it meant.
I didn’t set out to discover a truth. I was actually sent to the Outer Fringes to conduct a chair census and learn some humility. But the truth inevitably found me, as important truths often do, like a lost thought in need of a mind. I found Jane, too, or perhaps she found me. It doesn’t really matter. We found each other. And although she was Grey and I was Red, we shared a common thirst for justice that transcended Chromatic politics. I loved her, and what’s more, I was beginning to think that she loved me. After all, she did apologize before she pushed me into the leafless expanse below the spread of the yateveo, and she wouldn’t have done that if she’d felt nothing.“

Uit: How I Paid for College

„I lay my head down on the raft. "You're right, Sis," I say.

She's not really my sister, but she might as well be. Apart from the difference in our complexions, we could be twins: Paula is the pure white twin; I'm the evil dark one. Otherwise, we're both all long curly hair, thick eyelashes, and high body-fat ratio.

I also call her Sis because she uses her nun costume from our production of The Sound of Music to buy us beer, on the entirely correct theory that no one would ask a nun for her ID.

Paula snaps her parasol shut and rows over to me using the handle end. "The problem," she says, "is that I've got a nineteenth-century figure. If I'd been born a hundred years earlier, I would have been considered desirable."

We've had this conversation before. Some of us are born to run, others are born to be wild--Paula was born to wear a hoopskirt.

I feel the tap of a parasol on my shoulder. "Look at these," she says, mashing her boobs together like she's fluffing pillows. "And this." She turns sideways to grab a hunk of her fleshy butt.

"In the case of an emergency water landing, your seat cushion may be used as a flotation device," I say.

Paula tips my mattress over with one of her thick nineteenth-century legs.

I bob up to the surface and try to capsize her by grabbing her tiny feet. "No, no, no, please, Edward," she says, "the hair, the hair, I've got to be at work in an hour."

"Fine," I say, backstroking to the shallow end, "but as far as the nineteenth century goes, I've got two words for you."

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah: No anesthesia."

I can hear her deep, chocolaty laugh as I look up at the high-tension wires crisscrossing the baby blue sky. I love making Paula laugh.“

Southern Cross

(Stavros Tou Notou)

In the nor-wester the waves boiled;

we were both bent over the map.

You turned and told me how in March

you'd be in other latitudes.

A Chinese tatoo drawn on your chest;

however you burn it, it won't come off.

They said that you had loved her once

in a sudden fit of blackest fever.

Keeping watch by a barren cape

and the Southern Cross behind the braces.

You're holding coral worry-beads

and chewing bitter coffee beans.

I took a line on Alpha Centaurus

with the azimuth compass one night at sea.

You told me in a deathly voice:

"Beware of the stars of Southern skies".

Another time from that same sky

you took lessosn for three whole months

with the captain's mulatto girl

in how to navigate at night.

In some shopin Nosy Be

you bought the knife - two shillings it cost -

right on the equator, exactly at noon;

it glittered like a lighthouse beam.

Down on the shores of Africa

for some years now you've been asleep.

You don't remember the lighthouse now

or the delicious Sunday sweet.

„He rode slowly past the loch, thinking that this visit was a mistake.  It was possible to leave things behind--places, people, memories--at least for a time.  But places held tight to the things that had happened in them, and to come again to a place you had once lived was to be brought face to face with what you had done there, and who you had been.

Balriggan, though...it hadn't been a bad place; he had loved the wee loch, and the way it mirrored the sky, so still some mornings that you felt you might walk down into the clouds you saw reflected there, feeling their cold mist rise up about you, to wrap you in their drifting peace.  Or in the summer evenings, when the surface glimmered in hundreds of overlapping rings as the hatch rose, the rhythm of it broken now and then by the sudden splash of a leaping salmon.

The road took him closer, and he saw the stony shallows where he'd shown wee Joan and Marsali how to guddle fish, all three of them so intent on their business they'd paid no heed to the midgies biting, and gone home wet to the waist and red with bites and sunburn, the wee maids skipping and swinging from his hands, gleeful in the sunset.  He smiled just a little--then turned his horse's head away, up the hill to the house.

The place was shabby, but in decent repair, he grudgingly noted.  There was a saddle-mule browsing in the paddock behind the house, elderly, but sound-looking.  Well enough.  Laoghaire wasn't spending his money on follies or a coach-and-four, at least.“

Uit: The Drowned Man (Vertaald door Zoran Anchevski)

„Never before, in the long chain of their years, had the twelve elders sitting in front of their houses seen a drowned man floating in the calm waters of the lake, gliding to the shore, coming to rest on the wet sand, and as is the case with the dead, prone, motionless, barefoot.
Probably because of the heat with which even June is generous, the arrival of the corpse caused no great stir in the fishing village. Most men and women were behind the walls of their houses. There were no children. However, in a little while, a few young men, fearing some misfortune—an investigation, a hearing, suspicion—gathered around the drowned man and realized immediately that he was not a local, not from their side of the lake. His clothes of thin white linen seemed too big for him. The drowned man had fragile bones and was not swollen or blue. He seemed to be asleep in the rain—about to wake up.
With some concern that what he was doing was illegal, one of the fishermen knelt beside the corpse and removed some weed or grass from his face. From the incomplete frame of the gently curved eyebrows two eyes gazed at the fishermen. But what eyes! As if alive! Saved from the layers of murky slime the pupils shrank. The man kneeling by the corpse straightened up. He took a step back but said nothing. The others were also silent. As if they had always known what to do in such situations, as if rituals were a part of their lives, they raised the drowned man from the wet sand. They laid him gently in a wooden boat. Two of them, paler than before, rowed out to the middle of the lake. The watchers on the shore remained silent. They waited in a huddle, indistinguishable one from another, with set white faces.“

hier teilt sich der Pfad,

denn morgen mussi ch fort.

Ich scheide von dir,

man treibt mich von hier,

ich geh mit dem Polentransport.

Du gabst mir oft Mut,

treu warst du und gut,

zum Helfen immer bereit.

Ein Druck deiner Hand

Hat die Sorgen gebannt,

wir truce gemeinsam das Leid.

Ade, Kamerad,

um dich ist es schad,

der Abschied wird mir schwer.

Verlier nicht den Mut,

ich war dir so gut,

jetzt sehn wir uns nimmermehr.

Uit: Cry The Beloved Country

„This is no time to talk of hedges and fields, or the beauties of any country. Sadness and fear and hate, how they well up in the heart and mind. Cry for the broken tribe, for the law and the custom that is gone. Aye, and cry aloud for the man who is dead, for the woman and children bereaved. Cry the beloved country, these things are not yet at an end. The sun pours down on the earth, on the lovely land that man cannot enjoy. He knows only the fear of his heart.

Have no doubt it is fear in the land. For what can men do when so many have grown lawless? Who can enjoy the lovely land, who can enjoy the seventy years, and the sun that pours down on the earth, when there is fear in the heart? Who can walk quietly in the shadow of the jacarandas, when their beauty is grown to danger? Who can lie peacefully abed, while the darkness holds some secret? What lovers can lie sweetly under the stars, when menace grows with the measure of their seclusion?

Some cry for the cutting up of South Africa without delay into separate areas, where white can live without black, and black without white, where black can farm their own land and mine their own minerals and administer their own laws. And others cry away with the compound system, that brings men to the towns without their wives and children, and breaks up the tribe and the house and the man, and they ask for the establishment of villages for the labourers in mines and industry.

And the churches cry too. The English-speaking churches cry for more education, and more opportunity, and for a removal of the restrictions on native labour and enterprise. And the Afrikaans-speaking churches want to see the native people given opportunity to develop along their own lines, and remind their own people that the decay of family religion, where the servants took part in family devotions, has contributed in part to the moral decay of the native people. But there is to be no equality in church or state.“

Bedouin Song

FROM the Desert I come to thee

On a stallion shod with fire;

And the winds are left behind

In the speed of my desire.

Under thy window I stand,

And the midnight hears my cry:

I love thee, I love but thee,

With a love that shall not die

Till the sun grows cold,

And the stars are old,

And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!

Look from thy window and see

My passion and my pain;

I lie on the sands below,

And I faint in thy disdain.

Let the night-winds touch thy brow

With the heat of my burning sigh,

And melt thee to hear the vow

Of a love that shall not die

Till the sun grows cold,

And the stars are old,

And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!

My steps are nightly driven,

By the fever in my breast,

To hear from thy lattice breathed

The word that shall give me rest.

Open the door of thy heart,

And open thy chamber door,

And my kisses shall teach thy lips

The love that shall fade no more

Till the sun grows cold,

And the stars are old,

And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!

Kwart over elf. Niets nog.
Half twaalf.
Zeven minuten over half twaalf. Over
famous first words
gesproken.
