Uit: The Butcher Boy

“I was thinking about Mrs Nugent standing there crying her eyes out. I said sure what's the use in crying now Nugent it was you caused all the trouble if you hadn't poked your nose in everything would have been all right. And it was true. Why would I want to harm her son Philip--I liked him. The first day he came to the school Joe says to me did you see the new fellow? Philip Nugent is his name. O, I says, I'll have to see this. He had been to a private school and he wore this blazer with gold braid and a crest on the breast pocket. He had a navy blue cap with a badge and grey socks. What do you make of that says Joe. Woh boy, I said, Philip Nugent. This is Philip Nugent, said the master, he's come to join us Philip used to live in London but his parents are from the town and they have come back here to live. Now I want you to make him feel at home won't you? He was like Winker Watson out of the Dandy in this get-up of his only Winker was always up to devilment and Philip was the opposite. Every time you saw him he was investigating insects under rocks or explaining to some snottery-nosed young gawk about the boiling point of water. Me and Joe used to ask him all about this school. We said: What about these secret meetings and passwords? Tell us about the tuck shop--come on Philip but I don't think he knew what we were talking about. The best thing about him was his collection of comics. I just can't get over it, said Joe, I never seen anything like it. He had them all neatly filed away in shirt boxes not a crease or a dog-ear in sight. They looked as if they had come straight out of the shop. There were comics there we had never seen before in our lives and we thought we knew plenty about comics. Mrs Nugent says: Make sure not to damage any of those now they cost money. We said: We won't!--but afterwards Joe said to me: Francie we've got to have them. So you could say it was him started it and not me. We talked about it for a long time and we made our decision.

We had to have them and that was that.”

Uit: Thank You For Not Reading. Alchemy (Vertaald door Celia Hawkesworth)

„In the noncommercial East European cultures, there were no divisions into good and bad literature. There was literature and there was trash. Culture was divided into official culture and underground culture. Underground literature, as a resistance movement, occupied far more space (justifiably or not) on the unofficial scale of literary values. East European writers moved in a world of clear aesthetic coordinates; at least that’s what they believed. In their underground literary workshops, they diligently tempered the steel of their literary convictions. In return, they received abundant moral and emotional support from their readership. Both writers and their readers had endless amounts of time at their disposal, both everyday and "historical" time. And for someone to have any idea at all of what is really good, he needs time.

When East European writers finally began crawling out of their underground, they stepped into the global literary marketplace like self-confident literary arbiters, as unfailing connoisseurs of difference. They brought with them an awareness of their chosen position in this world (the Muses decided, not them), and a conviction that they had an unalienable right to literary art.

Their encounter with the literary market was the biggest shock of their writing lives, a loss of the ground under their feet, a terrible blow to their writers’ ego.

"Oh, you’re a writer?"

"Yes," our Easterner replies, trying to sound like a modest and well-brought-up person who does not want to humiliate those who have not been chosen.

"What a coincidence! Our ten-year-old daughter is just finishing a novel. We even have a publisher!"

And this is the first insult that our Easterner has to swallow. He himself does not even have a publisher. And he will soon discover that the world of the literary marketplace is densely populated with the "chosen," with his fellow writers.“

Uit: Five by Endo : Stories (Vertaald door Van C. Gessel)

„Finally the engine started up, and the bus made its way through thevillage. They passed through a district of two- and three-storey Japaneseinns, where men leaned with both hands on the railings of the balconiesand peered down into the bus. Even those windows which were desertedwere draped with pink and white washcloths and towels. When the busfinally passed beyond the hotel district, both sides of the mountain roadwere lined with old stone walls and squat farmhouses with thatchedroofs.

Suguro had no way of knowing whether these walls and farmhouseshad existed in the Christian century. Nor could he be sure that this roadwas the one travelled by the Christians, the officers, and the man he waspursuing. The only certain thing was that, during their fitful stops alongthe path, they had looked up at this same Mount Unzen wrapped in greymist.

He had brought a number of books with him from Tokyo, but he nowregretted not including a collection of letters from Jesuits of the day whohad reported on the Unzen martyrdoms to their superiors in Rome. Hehad thoughtlessly tossed into his bag one book that would be of no use tohim on this journey — Collado's Christian Confessions.

The air cooled as the bus climbed into the hills, and the passengers, peeling skins from the mikans they had bought at Obama, listenedhalf-heartedly to the sing-song travelogue provided by the conductor.

`Please look over this way,' she said with a waxy smile. `There are twolarge pine trees on top of the hill we are about to circle. It's said that atabout this spot, the Christians of olden days would turn around and looklongingly back at the village of Obama. These trees later became knownas the Looking-Back Pines.'

Collado's Christian Confessions was published in Rome in 1632, justfive years before the outbreak of the Shimabara Rebellion. By that timethe shogunate's persecution of the Christians had grown fierce, but afew Portuguese and Italian missionaries had still managed to steal intoJapan from Macao or Manila. The Christian Confessions were printed asa practical guide to Japanese grammar for the benefit of these missionaries. But what Suguro found hard to understand was why Collado hadmade public the confessions of these Japanese Christians, when aCatholic priest was under no circumstances permitted to reveal theinnermost secrets of the soul shared with him by members of his flock.“

Au coursier d'Israël qu'il attache le frein ;

J'ai fait pleuvoir le feu sur la tête des rois ;
L'avenir à genoux adorera mes lois ;

Les hommes se sont dit : " Il nous est étranger " ;
J'ai vu l'amour s'éteindre et l'amitié tarir ;
L'orage est dans ma voix, l'éclair est sur ma bouche ;

Sleep

Do you give yourself to me utterly,
Body and no-body, flesh and no-flesh
Not as a fugitive, blindly or bitterly,
But as a child might, with no other wish?
Yes, utterly.

Then I shall bear you down my estuary,
Carry you and ferry you to burial mysteriously,
Take you and receive you,
Consume you, engulf you,
In the huge cave, my belly, lave you

With huger waves continually.
And you shall cling and clamber there
And slumber there, in that dumb chamber,
Beat with my blood's beat, hear my heart move
Blindly in bones that ride above you,
Delve in my flesh, dissolved and bedded,
Through viewless valves embodied so –

Till daylight, the expulsion and awakening,
The riving and the driving forth,
Life with remorseless forceps beckoning –
Pangs and betrayal of harsh birth.

Alles

Zwei kleine Jungen gingen an ihm vorbei.

Servitude

Dear motherland of mine,
I love you as you are,
But if I saw you free,
I'd love you even more.

Weep, oh forests, plains and stones,
Weep, oh mountains under snows,
Poor Albania is abandoned,
Never will she see the light,
Veiled forever is the country
In a thick and sombre blight.

Darkness and misfortune on us,
Thunder, lightning all around us,
Do we live with hearts a-frozen,
Dwell in fear, deprived of joy,
None in song do raise their voices,
And the nightingales are grieving.

What disaster, desolation!
In their nests the birds take shelter,
Yet the people flee their own soil,
For a savage law does rule it,
Yes, Albania we yearn for you,
Refugees in states so foreign.

How can you endure such serfdom,
Oh, Albania, wretched country?
You've saved other nations while you
Bear this heavy yoke and burden.
Oh, Albanians, swear an oath that
You will now fight for your homeland.

Dear motherland of mine,
I love you as you are,
But if I saw you free,
I'd love you even more.

Working Late

A light is on in my father's study.

"Still up?" he says, and we are silent,

looking at the harbor lights,

listening to the surf

and the creak of coconut boughs.

He is working late on cases.

No impassioned speech! He argues from evidence,

actually pacing out and measuring,

while the fans revolving on the ceiling

winnow the true from the false.

Once he passed a brass curtain rod

through a head made out of plaster

and showed the jury the angle of fire--

where the murderer must have stood.

For years, all through my childhood,

if I opened a closet . . . bang!

There would be the dead man's head

with a black hole in the forehead.

All the arguing in the world

will not stay the moon.

She has come all the way from Russia

to gaze for a while in a mango tree

and light the wall of a veranda,

before resuming her interrupted journey

beyond the harbor and the lighthouse

at Port Royal, turning away

from land to the open sea.

Yet, nothing in nature changes, from that day to this,

she is still the mother of us all.

I can see the drifting offshore lights,

black posts where the pelicans brood.

And the light that used to shine

at night in my father's study

now shines as late in mine.

Carolina Trujillo

Uit: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

„BRICK: Why d'ya call Gooper's kiddies no-neck monsters?

MARGARET: Because they've got no necks! Isn't that a good enough reason?

BRICK: Don't they have any necks?

MARGARET: None visible. Their fat little heads are set on their fat little bodies without a bit of connection.

BRICK: That's too bad.

MARGARET: Yes, it's too bad because you can't wring their necks if they've got no necks to wring! Isn't that right, honey?

[She steps out of her dress, stands in a slip of ivory satin and lace.]

Yep, they're no-neck monsters, all no-neck people are monsters ...

[Children shriek downstairs.]

Hear them? Hear them screaming? I don't know where their voice boxes are located since they don't have necks. I tell you I got so nervous at that table tonight I thought I would throw back my head and utter a scream you could hear across the Arkansas border an' parts of Louisiana an' Tennessee. I said to your charming sister-in-law, Mae, honey, couldn't you feed those precious little things at a separate table with an oilcloth cover? They make such a mess an' the lace cloth looks so pretty! She made enormous eyes at me and said, "Ohhh, noooooo! On Big Daddy's birthday? Why, he would never forgive me!" Well, I want you to know, Big Daddy hadn't been at the table two minutes with those five no-neck monsters slobbering and drooling over their food before he threw down his fork an' shouted, "Fo' God's sake, Gooper, why don't you put them pigs at a trough in th' kitchen?"-Well, I swear, I simply could have di-ieed!

Think of it, Brick, they've got five of them and number six is coming. They've brought the whole bunch down here like animals to display at a county fair. Why, they have those children doin' tricks all the time! "Junior, show Big Daddy how you do this, show Big Daddy how you do that, say your little piece fo' Big Daddy, Sister. Show your dimples, Sugar. Brother, show Big Daddy how you stand on your head!"-It goes on all the time, along with constant little remarks and innuendos about the fact that you and I have not produced any children, are totally childless and therefore totally useless! -Of course it's comical but it's also disgusting since it's so obvious what they're up to!

BRICK [without interest]: What are they up to, Maggie?“

Uit: The Mule (Vertaald door Kim Chong-un and Bruce Fulton)

„Once again young Yu saw a fresh pile of trampled-down dung where the mule had been tied up next to his house the previous night. And once again he reminded himself it was high time he gave the owner a piece of his mind and stopped him from bringing the mule there. That way, if his family ended up buying it, the owner could probably be persuaded to part with it dirt cheap. On the spot, young Yu sought out the old gentleman who lived next door, on the other side of where the mule had been tied up. As was his habit, the man was taking in the sun, pipe in hand.
"Grandpa, we need to do something. Either that damn little mule goes or my people go, one or the other.
"Irregardless, how come we got to put up with it? This very morning the neighbors come by and tell us to clean up the damn mess. We ain't said nothing to the owner, and the whole village is getting filthy... You being an elder, the folks here won't speak up to you. Instead they come to us.
"How come we got to put up with it?"
The head with its horsehair hat liner nodded. The old gentleman seemed to have been put on the spot.
"Well, it's been an eyesore for so long, I wish we'd stopped it from being tied up there once and for all. The man who owns it keeps asking people to give them a break and bear with them a little longer, until they can move it...
"But from now on he's going to gave to clean up after the animal."
"That's what I like to hear. But he's going to need some convincing. You know, this cooler weather we been having is a luxury. But the dog days are coming, and that's when we get a real problem. Then that manure attracts every fly in the village."
"Yes sir, it does."
"I wish Yu wouldn't talk so polite to me, sir."
"Well, for the time being..."
"There's all sorts of diseases from Manchuria going around, and people say it 's because of that damn manure.“

“MAG. Young girls should not be out gallivanting with fellas …!

MAUREEN. Young girls! I’m forty years old, for feck’s sake! Finish it!

Mag drinks again

MAUREEN. ‘Young girls’! That’s the beste yet. And how did Annette or Margo ever get married if it wasn’t first out gallivanting that they were?

MAG. I don’t know.

MAUREEN. Drink!

MAG. I don’t like it, Maureen.

MAUREEN. Would you like it better over your head?

Mag drinks again

MAUREEN. I’ll tell you, eh? ‘Young girls out gallivanting.’ I’ve heard it all now. What have I ever done but kissed two men the past forty years?

MAG. Two men is plenty!

MAUREEN. Finish!

MAG. I’ve finished! (Mag holds out the mug. Maureen washes it.) Two men is two men too much!

MAUREEN. To you, maybe. To you. Not to me.

MAG. Two men too much!

MAUREEN. Do you think I like being stuck up here with you? Eh? Like a dried up oul …

MAG. Whore!

Maureen laughs

MAUREEN. Whore? (Pause) Do I not wish, now? Do I not wish? (Pause) Sometimes I dream …

MAG. Of being a …?

MAUREEN. Of anything! (Pause. Quietly) Of anything. Other than this.”

Last night I drove a car

Last night I drove a car

not knowing how to drive

not owning a car

I drove and knocked down

people I loved

...went 120 through one town.

I stopped at Hedgeville

and slept in the back seat

...excited about my new life.

The Mad Yak

I am watching them churn the last milk they'll ever get

from me.

They are waiting for me to die;

They want to make buttons out of my bones.

Where are my sisters and brothers?

That tall monk there, loading my uncle, he has a new cap.

And that idiot student of his--

I never saw that muffler before.

Poor uncle, he lets them load him.

How sad he is, how tired!

I wonder what they'll do with his bones?

And that beautiful tail!

How many shoelaces will they make of that!

July is Not Far

—for Qinghai Lake, please put out my love

July is not far
The birth of sex is not far
Love is not far—under a horse’s nose
salt in the lake

Thus Qinghai is not far
Beehives along the lake
make me lugubrious:
Flowers bloom in green grass.

On Qinghai Lake
my loneliness is like heaven’s horse
(Thus, heaven’s horse is not far)

I am the loveseed: the wild flower
sung in poems, the only fatal flower
in the belly of heaven’s horse
(Qinghai Lake, put out my love!)

The green stem of a wild flower is not far
The ancient names in the medicine chest are not far
(Other bums, their sicknesses cured
returned home, I want to go visit you now)

Thus over the mountain and across the water
death is not far
Bones hang in my body like branches on blue water

O Qinghai Lake, the dusk-covered water:
Everything is in front of me!

But the birds of May have flown away
The first bird that drinks my head of jewels has flown away
Only Qinghai Lake stays, this corpse of jewels
                                       this dusk-covered water

A Prayer in Spring

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers today;

And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here

All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,

Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;

And make us happy in the happy bees,

The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird

That suddenly above the bees is heard,

The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,

And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,

To which it is reserved for God above

To sanctify to what far ends he will,

But which it only needs that we fulfill.

Putting in the seed

You come to fetch me from my work to-night
When supper's on the table, and we'll see
If I can leave off burying the white
Soft petals fallen from the apple tree
(Soft petals, yes, but not so barren quite,
Mingled with these, smooth bean and wrinkled pea);
And go along with you ere you lose sight
Of what you came for and become like me,
Slave to a Springtime passion for the earth.
How Love burns through the Putting in the Seed
On through the watching for that early birth
When, just as the soil tarnishes with weed,
The sturdy seedling with arched body comes
Shouldering its way and shedding the earth crumbs.

By Train from Berlin

A delicate border. A nonexistent country.
The train obligingly dissolves in smoke.
The G.I. next to me is talking war.
I don't "know the Asian mind," he says.

Moving through old arguments.

At Potsdam (a globe-shaped dome,
a pink canal reflecting sepia trees)
we pull next to a broken-down old train
with REICHSBAHN lettered on its flank.

Thirty years sheer away leaving bare cliff.

This is a country I don't recognize.
Bone-pale girls who have nothing to do with home.
Everyone's taller than me, everyone naked.
"Life's cheap there," he says.

But why are we screaming over a track
which runs between a barbed wire corridor?
And why has it grown so dark outside,
so bright in here

that even the pared moon is invisible?

In the window we can only see ourselves,
America we carry with us,
two scared people talking death
on a train which can't stop.

Flying at Forty

You call me
courageous,
I who grew up
gnawing on books,
as some kids
gnaw
on bubble gum,

who married disastrously
not once
but three times,
yet have a lovely daughter
I would not undo
for all the dope
in California.

Fear was my element,
fear my contagion.
I swam in it
till I became
immune.
The plane takes off
& I laugh aloud.
Call me courageous.

I am still alive.

Oh, when I was in love with you

Oh, when I was in love with you

Then I was clean and brave,

And miles around the wonder grew

How well did I behave.

And now the fancy passes by

And nothing will remain,

And miles around they'll say that I

Am quite myself again.

The chestnut casts his flambeaux, and the flowers

The chestnut casts his flambeaux, and the flowers

Stream from the hawthorn on the wind away,

The doors clap to, the pane is blind with showers.

Pass me the can, lad; there's an end of May.

There's one spoilt spring to scant our mortal lot,

One season ruined of our little store.

May will be fine next year as like as not:

Oh ay, but then we shall be twenty-four.

We for a certainty are not the first

Have sat in taverns while the tempest hurled

Their hopeful plans to emptiness, and cursed

Whatever brute and blackguard made the world.

It is in truth iniquity on high

To cheat our sentenced souls of aught they crave,

And mar the merriment as you and I

Fare on our long fool's-errand to the grave.

Iniquity it is; but pass the can.

My lad, no pair of kings our mothers bore;

Our only portion is the estate of man:

We want the moon, but we shall get no more.

If here to-day the cloud of thunder lours

To-morrow it will hie on far behests;

The flesh will grieve on other bones than ours

Soon, and the soul will mourn in other breasts.

The troubles of our proud and angry dust

Are from eternity, and shall not fail.

Bear them we can, and if we can we must.

Shoulder the sky, my lad, and drink your ale.
