Uit: Colder Layers of Air (Vertaald door Zaia Alexander)

„About light they knew everything.

They knew it in every shade. They had seen how it made the sky appear brittle and torn, or waxed blue-black. They knew how the light looked under foaming clouds; how it fell diagonally over the Fjell; how it struck the rocks over the forest and the thick underbrush. They knew how fleeting, how illusive it was. If the lake had just shone turquoise to the bottom, the next moment it lay leaden and sealed like asphalt. They had seen how the light made the pines and blackberry bushes appear matt in the rain; they had seen how the roads looked at four in the morning, devastated by falling rocks, and at noon on neatly mown Swedish front lawns. They knew it in the shimmering yellow from the heat, in the greenish glow of the evening; they could say how it looked above the roof of the tool-shed on overcast days.

They knew how faces change when glaring light falls upon them. Every morning, when they left their tents and went to the wash area, they had to cross the grassy field that had been cleared from the forest. There the faces became stable. They changed from milky-gray, the color of night, into a harsh, polished tan. They knew it. They saw it every morning.

And later, when only a few clouds were left in the sky, this tan had a certain sharpness, as faces only here have, on this peninsula. It was brutal how the sun shone.

Nobody spoke about the light.

There were other things to discuss. They had to take care of the tent walls that had torn in the storm and were lying on the field like shed skins in need of mending. They had to replenish the supplies and food that came every Saturday from Berlin; they telephoned often. They reordered potatoes and coffee, charcoal and sausages and rice, and they never forgot fruit, because fruit was particularly expensive this summer in Sweden. They sent the newly arrived youth groups to the lakes, first to the small Stora Le and then to the wind-whipped Foxen; they gave the crew photocopies of outdoor cookbooks so they knew how many cans of chili to empty into the pans at night. In the kitchen tents, they packed weekly supplies in waterproofed plastic barrels.“

Uit: Innocent

„A man is sitting on a bed. He is my father.

The body of a woman is beneath the covers. She was my mother.

This is not really where the story starts. Or how it ends. But it is the moment my mind returns to, the way I always see them.

According to what my father will soon tell me, he has been there, in that room, for nearly twenty-three hours, except for bathroom breaks. Yesterday, he awoke, as he does most weekdays, at half past six and could see the mortal change as soon as he glanced back at my mother, just as his feet had found his slippers. He rocked her shoulder, touched her lips. He pumped the heel of his palm against her sternum a few times, but her skin was cool as clay. Her limbs were already moving in a piece, like a mannequin's.

He will tell me he sat then, in a chair across from her. He never cried. He thought, he will say. He does not know how long, except that the sun had moved all the way across the room, when he finally stood again and began to tidy obsessively.

He will say he put the three or four books she was always reading back on the shelf. He hung up the clothes she had a habit of piling on the chaise in front of her dressing mirror, then made the bed around her, pulling the sheets tight, folding the spread down evenly, before laying her hands out like a doll's on the satin binding of the blanket. He threw out two of the flowers that had wilted in the vase on her night table and straightened the papers and magazines on her desk.

He will tell me he called no one, not even the paramedics because he was certain she was dead, and sent only a one-line e-mail to his assistant to say he would not be at work. He did not answer the phone, although it rang several times. Almost an entire day will have passed before he realizes he must contact me.“

Uit: Damsels In Distress (Preface)

“In 2000, having recently reached my sixtieth year and rapidly approaching my 45th working in theatre, I began to yearn, once again, for a permanent acting company which during the 60's, 70's and early 80's were the mainstay of the Theatre in Scarborough. Recently, as with so many regional companies, we had begun to rely more and more on actors visiting us, short term, for one or maybe two productions. Spot casting in this way has its advantages. You tend to get just the right actor for the right part and, given the shorter nature of the engagement, a wider range of performers willing to tear themselves away from family, friends and other more lucrative London based work.
What you lose of course is the true company. The moment when a group of individual (sometimes highly individual) actors through familiarity, growing confidence and trust in each other forms that most unique of all theatrical achievements - a shared 'corporate' identity. The individuality remains - but the sum of the separate parts has generated something greater and stronger.
In my experience, some companies are highly stable and are happy to remain together for months, even years. These, ironically, are often made up of those who offstage prefer to go their separate ways. Their working lives are close-knit and shared; their personal lives are worlds apart. Conversely the group that eats, drinks, sometimes sleeps (and incidentally acts) together proves usually to be short lived and unstable. It is nothing you can plan for. Who can foretell whether X will take an instant dislike to, or have an overwhelming desire for Y? Personally, I try to put together companies consisting of people that I like and trust to luck that this common bond will prove a strong enough glue to hold the elements together.”

Uit: Net Force: State of War

„The wine he was using for the stock was eighty-some odd bucks a bottle, too, but there was no substitute for quality.  If you were going to cook fine food with wine, what was the point in murdering the taste with cheap stuff?

Ames was not a wine snob.  He didn’t bother to learn all the proper terms one used, nose and bouquet and finish and so forth.  But he knew a good wine when he tasted it.  The first time he had sipped anything from Blackwood Canyon, he knew he’d found a vintner who knew exactly what he was doing.  He bought a cellarful of the wines by the case.  He had also invested money in the business, as much as Michael Taylor Moore would let him.

He had others now, but Moore’s first winery was a hole-in-the-wall place at the end of a gravel road out in the middle of Nowhere, Washington.  His first place was hard to find, and it wasn’t even listed on the local guides.  If you didn’t know where the place was, you pretty much had to stumble across it by accident, or else put in a lot of hours doing detective work.  It was worth it, though.  Back then, the only spot you could buy any of his product was at the winery itself, or by the bottle in a few of the world’s finer restaurants.

Moore made his vintages in the old-style European manner, much of it involving a process called “sur lees.”  Ames didn’t quite understand that, but he knew it involved leaving the fruit in the stuff longer than was considered by most to be proper.  As a result, the whites had fullness unmatched by any made in North America.  Those whites could run with almost anybody else’s reds.  And his reds?  Well, they were just unbelievable.“

Uit: Puerto Rico (Fragment)

Above the waters of the sea, which you rule;

A vase of flowers, swaying

Among foam and coral, perfumes and pearls;

You, that at evening pour over the sea,

With the colors that your sunset put on,

Another ocean of floating flames;

You, that give me the air I breathe,

And life, and the song that breaks forth of its own accord! . . .

of this (American) world, you are the most beautiful fragment,

O my fatherland! broken off and flung into the sea

By a violent cataclysm.

But you brought only the beauty of the vast continent.

Without copying its pomp, or the terrors of its greatness.

Upon your mountains, neither the tiger, the lion, nor the jaguar

Utters its fierce and terrifying cry,

Nor does the boa constrictor coil upon the plains,

Nor does the untamed and savage alligator

Disturb the pure, transparent water

Of your gentle rivers . . .

Nor do your mountains, shaken upon their foundations,

Sound with sudden tumult.

When, with hoarse, titanic breathing,

Orizaba and Cotopaxi roar.

No Niagara makes your soil tremble

With the fall of its immense cataract.

Where Iris, painter of heaven,

Joins to its borders of shining silver,

Gold and crimson, purple and topaz.

While the condor, monarch of space,

Mirrors himself proudly in its crystal;

Uit: The Storm (Vertaald door Constance Garnett)

„SHAPKIN.

Old Dame Kabanova's a good hand at that too!

KUDRIASH.

Yes, but she at least does it all under pretence of morality; he's like a wild beast broken loose!

SHAPKIN.

There's no one to bring him to his senses, so he rages about as he likes!

KUDRIASH.

There are too few lads of my stamp or we'd have broken him of it.

SHAPKIN.

Why, what would you have done?

KUDRIASH.

We'd have given him a good scare.

SHAPKIN.

How'd you do that?

KUDRIASH.

Why, four or five of us would have had a few words with him, face to face, in some back street, and he'd soon have been as soft as silk. And he'd never have let on to a soul about the lesson we'd given him; he'd just have walked off and taken care to look behind him.

SHAPKIN.

I see he'd some reason for wanting to get you sent for a soldier.

KUDRIASH.

He wanted to, right enough, but he didn't do it. No, he won't get rid of me; he's an inkling that I'd make him pay too dear for it. You're afraid of him, but I know how to talk to him.“

Woman’s Changeableness

If women could be fair and yet not fond,
Or that their love were firm not fickle, still,
I would not marvel that they make men bond,
By service long to purchase their good will;
But when I see how frail those creatures are,
I muse that men forget themselves so far.

To mark the choice they make, and how they change,
How oft from Phacbus do they flee to Pan,
Unsettled still like haggards wild they range,
These gentle birds that fly from man to man;
Who would not scorn and shake them from the fist
And let them fly fair fools which way they list.

Yet for disport we fawn and flatter both,
To pass the time when nothing else can please,
And train them to our lure with subtle oath,
Till, weary of their wiles, ourselves we ease;
And then we say when we their fancy try,
To play with fools, O what a fool was I.

Verlaten straten komen samen, gaan uiteen

Keeping Things Whole

In a field

I am the absence

of field.

This is

always the case.

Wherever I am

I am what is missing.

When I walk

I part the air

and always

the air moves in

to fill the spaces

where my body's been.

We all have reasons

for moving.

I move

to keep things whole.

Coming to This

We have done what we wanted.

We have discarded dreams, preferring the heavy industry

of each other, and we have welcomed grief

and called ruin the impossible habit to break.

And now we are here.

The dinner is ready and we cannot eat.

The meat sits in the white lake of its dish.

The wine waits.

Coming to this

has its rewards: nothing is promised, nothing is taken away.

We have no heart or saving grace,

no place to go, no reason to remain.

Uit: In jean Genet Square

“At that time I was studying in Barcelona, living not far from the famous avenue, La Rambla. At night I would go out to wander about the streets with their sublime buildings, or perhaps to the port, be it to pass the time or go in search of adventure.

One evening, my wanderings led me to a side Street, not far from La Rambla. It was a quiet, clean street, and a small square lie in its middle. Upon the sign hanging there I read its name, “Jean Genet Square”.

The area drew me in, and I found myself sitting in a park bench facing the middle of the square. From the backpack I was carrying I took out my favorite book – The Book of Sand, by Borges – my companion wherever I went. I began to read, peacefully, surrendering myself to the quiet breeze of the evening which had just begun to blow that sweltering day. As night fell, I had already read the greater part of it.

When I left the area, I purposed to come back regularly to read, and to enjoy the breeze that wafted through the square.

The next day, I came to the same place, at just about the same time, and sat in the same bench. As I opened my backpack to take out my book, I noticed there was a relatively old man sitting beside me. I wasn’t taken back so much by his presence, as by the uncomfortable feeling that I knew him from somewhere.

He was a little portly, but not unfashionably so, with his head completely shaven, and from his bloodshot eyes it was clear he didn’t sleep much. But what really captured my attention in his grey eyes was the luster that bore into the eyes of others with a fiery intelligence.”

There was a beauty

There was a beauty. There was sweetness.
I contemplated
a delicate rose.
And reality smashed down on me
like a loose boulder.

The boulder is just an image.
It'll be best to
tell everything.
The daily grind's edifying
and has the whip-hand.

My instinct followed the right track.
When that man came in
it boomed like breakers:
"I know him. Electricity.
He'll switch off the mains."

I was sharpening my pencil
the knife in my hand.
If I stab this man
I know that I shall be at peace,
at last reconciled.

I was embittered. Well, all right.
The whole flat will be
dark and depressing.
An animal can protect its home.
This war's different.

Violence will just be futile.
I'll get beaten up,
turn sick and twisted.
And no light. Where there's rule of law
cash is armament.

The technology of war's changed.
The splendid hero
needn't draw his sword.
Five pound notes are bomb explosions,
pennies are shrapnel.

That's the way I reasoned it out.
So I said: "Hallo"
and stepped aside.
At nightfall the generous moon
smiled at the outcome.

Uit: Three Things I Know for Sure

„Let me tell you the mean story. For years and years, I convinced myself that I was unbreakable, an animal with an animal strength or something not human at all. Me, I told people, I take damage like a wall, a brick wall that never falls down, never feels anything, never flinches or remembers. I am one woman but I carry in my body all the stories I have ever been told, women I have known, women who have taken damage until they tell themselves they can feel no pain at all. That’s the mean story. That’s the lie I told myself for years, and not until I began to fashion stories on the page did I sort it all out, see where the lie ended and broken life remained. But that is not how I am supposed to tell it. I’m only supposed to tell one story at a time, one story. Every writing course I ever heard of said the same thing. Take one story, follow it through, beginning, middle, end. I don’t do that. I never do. Behind the story I tell is the one I don’t. Behind the story you hear is the one I wish I could make you hear. Behind my carefully buttoned collar is my nakedness, the struggle to find clean clothes, food, meaning, and money. Behind sex is rage, behind anger is love, behind this moment is silence, years of silence.“

Mai-Segen

I

       An Segen reich.

       An Segen reich.

II

       Gesegnet sei.

Kinder sind wie Bäume

Kinder sind wie Bäume
Bäume sind wie Kinder
Sie brauchen Schlaf und Träume
und ganz allein Zusammensein
den dunklen Wald, versteckte Winkel
und große helle Räume

Und wer sie zwingt zu blühen
im Herbst oder im Winter
der kann sich noch so mühen
Kinder sind wie Bäume
Bäume sind wie Kinder

Lässt du den Bäumen
Zeit zum Träumen
dann sind die Blüten
nicht mehr weit
sie kommen von alleine
wie Kinder auf die Beine

Brotlos

(Für die warnstreikende ABB-Belegschaft in Alzenau)

Die Literaturpreise
fallen
nicht vom Himmel
wenn wir nicht für ihre Interessen schreiben
die da für unsre Zukunft
streiken
werden sie uns nicht vergeben
die Literaturpreise
liegen
auf der Straße
warten vor der Arbeitsagentur
Ob unsre Lieder
sie verdienen
werden wir erst dann verstehen
wenn wir von unsren Denkmalsockeln steigen
und uns denen zeigen
sie denen und mit
denen singen
die uns unser täglich Brot
nächtlich backen täglich bringen
und für einen Hungerlohn
davon zur Not
noch leben können
Ohne sie
wär Kunst
nur brotlos

GUTEN TAG

immer hinterher im regen stehen

gelassen bleiben als ob gehen

die frage sei: dahingestellt

& was aus allen Wolken fällt

mir zu betrifft mich offenherzig

verheult verlacht den rest verschmerz ich

vergeh verkomme auf dich zu

entferne mich was bleibt bist du

"Wait," he said over his shoulder to the gamekeeper, who was about to leave the room to dispose of cane and hat.
He crumpled the letter into his pocket. "Tell Kalman to harness up at six o'clock. The Landau, because there's rain in the air. And he is to wear full-dress livery. You too," he said with unexpected force, as if suddenly angered. "Everything must shine. The carriage and harness are to be cleaned immediately. Then put on your livery, and seat yourself next to Kalman on the coachbox. Understood?"
"Yes, Excellence,"said the gamekeeper, looking his master directly in the eye. "At six o'clock." "At half past six you will leave," said the General, and then appeared to be making some calculation, for his lips moved silently. "You will go to the White Eagle. All you are to say is that I have sent you, and the carriage for the Captain is waiting. Repeat."
The gamekeeper repeated the words. Then the General raised his hand, as if he had just thought of something else, and he looked up at the ceiling but didn't say anything and went upstairs to the second floor. The gamekeeper, still frozen to attention, watched him, unblinking, and waited until the thickset, broad-shouldered figure disappeared around the turn of the stone balustrade.
The General went into his room, washed his hands, and stepped over to his high, narrow standing desk; arranged on its surface of unstained green felt were pens, ink, and a perfectly aligned stack of those notebooks covered in black-and-white-checked oilcloth commonly used by schoolchildren for their home- work. In the middle of the desk stood a green-shaded lamp, which the General switched on, as the room was dark. On the other side of the closed blinds, in the scorched, withered garden, summer ignited a last blaze like an arsonist setting the fields on fire in senseless fury before making his escape.“

Uit: Von Ryan’s Express

„He turned to the lieutenant.

'Have him clean that piece.'

The lieutenant stared with brown fawn's eyes, a look of anxious concentration on his smooth face.

'Have him clean that carbine,' the American said. 'Not that Fm trying to help you run your war but I wouldn't want anybody shot by a filthy carbine.'

'Si, colonnello,' the lieutenant said hastily, wondering why he was taking orders when he should be giving them but unable to withstand the prisoner's cold assurance. 'Domani. Tomorrow.'

'Domani,' the American said. 'God knows how many times I've heard that word in the last six hours.'

He returned to his scrutiny of the squirming sentry.

'Ask him when he shaved last,' he demanded, without taking his eyes from the man.

The lieutenant asked. The man answered sullenly and hung his head. The lieutenant snapped at him. The sentry snapped back. They argued with increasing heat.

'As you were!' the American ordered.

They stopped immediately and looked at him as if awaiting instructions.

'Lieutenant,' the American said with patient irony, 'no wonder you people are losing a war. An officer does not argue with an enlisted man. He tells him.'

'I know colonnello,' the lieutenant said apologetically. 'But these imbecilli ... Those who guard the prigionieri are, how you say, the dregess.'

'Dregs,' the American corrected. 'You're assigned to this prison camp, aren't you, lieutenant?' The lieutenant looked betrayed. He was perhaps twenty-two, with a sensitive, handsome face. His hair was dark and curly, his jaw firm, his lips full.

'While I'm on the subject,' said the American, 'when was the last time you had a shave, lieutenant?'

'Only this morning,' the lieutenant said eagerly, thrusting his face forward for closer inspection.

The American drew back distastefully.“

Last Stanzas of the Bush

Where is Australia, singer, do you know?

These sordid farms and joyless factories,

Mephitic mines and lanes of pallid woe?

Those ugly towns and cities such as these

With incense sick to all unworthy power,

And all old sin in full malignant flower?

No! to her bourn her children still are faring:

She is a temple that we are to build:

For her the ages have been long preparing:

She is a prophecy to be fulfilled!

All that we love in olden lands and lore

Was signal of her coming long ago!

Bacon foresaw her, Campanella, More,

And Plato’s eyes were with her star aglow!

Who toiled for Truth, whate’er their countries were,

Who fought for Liberty, they yearned for her!

No corsair’s gathering ground, nor tryst for schemers,

No chapman Carthage to a huckster Tyre,

She is the Eldorado of old dreamers,

The Sleeping Beauty of the world’s desire.

She is the scroll on which we are to write

Mythologies our own and epics new:

She is the port of our propitious flight

From Ur idolatrous and Pharaoh’s crew.

She is our own, unstained, if worthy we,

By dream, or god, or star we would not see:

Her crystal beams all but the eagle dazzle.

Her wind-wide ways none but the strong-winged sail:

She is Eutopia, she is Hy-Brasil,

The watchers on the tower of morning hail!

Yet she shall be as we, the Potter, mould:

Altar or tomb, as we aspire, despair:

What wine we bring shall she, the chalice, hold:

What word we write shall she, the script, declare:

Bandage our eyes, she shall be Memphis, Spain:

Barter our souls, she shall be Tyre again:

And if we pour on her the red oblation,

All o’er the world shall Asshur’s buzzards throng:

Love-lit, her Chaos shall become Creation:

And dewed with dream, her silence flower in song.

Was sagst du?

Rhapsodie (Fragment)

Der Herrn Poeten gibt es viel;

Zehn fehlen, einer trifft das Ziel.

Mein liebes Deutschland hast du denn

Drei Dichter auf einmal gesehn?

Es trägt in funfzig Jahren kaum

Ein Sprößchen unser Lorbeerbaum.

Doch greift darnach ein jeder Tor

Als käm's auf allen Hecken vor.

Man sagt, was mag die Ursach sein

Von diesem wunderlichen Schrein?

Der Bär ja doch nicht fliegen will,

Das Pferd nicht will die Wand hinauf,

Der Hund ja gerne stehet still

Beim breiten Fluß in vollem Lauf.

Allein das arme Menschentier

Zankt sich mit der Natur herum,

Und wenn sie ruft: »Nicht weiter hier!«

So kehrt es darum doch nicht um.

Wo sein Genie nicht will, just dort

Will es, allein es kann nicht fort.

Psalm XXIII

The shepherd Christ from heav'n arriv'd,

My flesh and spirit feeds;

I shall not therefore be depriv'd

Of all my nature needs.

As slop'd against the glist'ning beam

The velvet verdure swells,

He keeps, and leads me by the stream

Where consolation dwells.

My soul He shall from sin restore,

And her free pow'rs awake,

In paths of heav'nly truth to soar,

For love and mercy's sake.

Yea, tho' I walk death's gloomy vale,

The dread I shall disdain;

For Thou art with me, lest I fail,

To check me and sustain.

Thou shalt my plenteous board appoint

Before the braving foe;

Thine oil and wine my head anoint,

And make my goblet flow.

But great still Thy love and grace

Shall all my life attend;

And in Thine hallow'd dwelling place

My knees shall ever bend.

Am Strande

Auf hochgestapelte Ballen blickt
Der Kaufherr mit Ergötzen;
Ein armer Fischer daneben flickt
Betrübt an zerrissenen Netzen.

Manch rüstig stolz bewimpelt Schiff!
Manch morsches Wrack im Sande;
Der Hafen hier und dort das Riff,
Jetzt Flut, jetzt Ebb' am Strande.

Hier Sonnenblick, Sturmwolken dort;
Hier Schweigen, dorten Lieder,
Und Heimkehr hier, dort Abschiedswort;

Das Jauchzen wie das Stöhnen;
Fort wogt das Meer, und ach! verschlingt
Die Rosen wie die Tränen.
