The Demon Sings

O to be an angel

Do whatever you're told

Preen each other's wingtips
Grin your set of gold

I'd rather be a demon

Ploughing through the glaur

Whistling to my fellows

What against is for

Against is not for nothing

Against is drive a nail

Against is draw a crown down

Fill a quaich with hail

So hail to all high water

The maelstrom and the pit

You'll never hear a harpstring

If we can smuggle it

Away from the high heavens

And tease it out to bind

Every gasping evangelist

Right out of his mind

For we are merry dancers

Through curtains of the dark
Feel us hear us fear us

When the dark begins to spark!

The Macaw

A singing macaw called Novello

Kept calling his blue feathers yellow.

'No, I'm not colour-blind,

For it's all in the mind,

Like the deep green voice of my cello.'

At Lemmons

Above my table three magnolia flowers

Utter their silent requiems.

Through the window I see your elms

In labour with the racking storm

Giving it shape in April’s shifty airs.

Up there sky boils from a brew of cloud

To blue gleam, sunblast, then darkens again.

No respite is allowed

The watching eye, the natural agony.

Below is the calm a loved house breeds

Where four have come together to dwell

-           Two write, one paints, the fourth invents -

Each pursuing a natural bent

But less through nature’s formative travail

Than each in his own humour finding the self he needs.

Round me all is amenity, a bloom of

Magnolia uttering its requiems,

A climate of acceptance.  Very well

I accept my weakness with my friends’

Good natures sweetening each day my sick room.

The Ecstatic

Lark, skylark, spilling your rubbed and round

Pebbles of sounds in air’s still lake,

Whose widening circles fill the noon; yet none

Is known so small beside the sun:

Be strong your fervent soaring, your skyward air!

Tremble there, a nerve of song!

Float up there where voice and wing are one,

A singing star, a note of light!

Buoyed, embayed in heaven’s noon-wide]reaches-

For soon Light’s tide will turn – Oh Stay!

Cease not till day streams to the west, then down

That estuary drop down to peace.

Uit: Fences (Introduction)

„Near the turn of the century, the destitute of Europe sprang on the city with tenacious claws and an

honest and solid dream. The city devoured them. They swelled its belly until it burst into a thousand

furnaces and sewing machines, a thousand butcher shops and bakers’ ovens, a thousand churches and hospitals and funeral parlors and moneylenders. The city grew. It nourished itself and offered each man a partnership limited only by his talent, his guile, and his willingness and capacity for hard work. For the immigrants of Europe, a dream dared and won true.

The descendants of African slaves were offered no such welcome or participation. They came from

places called the Carolinas and the Virginias, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. They came strong, eager, searching. The city rejected them, and they fled and settled along the riverbanks and under bridges in shallow, ramshackle houses made of sticks and tar-paper. They collected rags and wood. They sold the use of their muscles and their bodies. They cleaned houses and washed clothes, they shined shoes, and in quiet desperation and vengeful pride, they stole and lived in

pursuit of their own dream: That they could breathe free, finally, and stand to meet life with the force of dignity and whatever eloquence the heart could call upon.

By 1957, the hard-won victories of the European immigrants had solidified the industrial might of America. War had been confronted and won with new energies that used loyalty and patriotism as its fuel. Life was rich, full, and flourishing. The Milwaukee Braves won the World Series, and the hot winds of change that would make the sixties a turbulent, racing, dangerous, and provocative

decade had not yet begun to blow full.“

Music of Rain

Drops of rain, as if smiles from the worlds beyond,

Travel here and there seeking the seas they parted from.

They fall with the sound of plucked lute-strings:

And hearing it, the earth begins to breathe.

Drops of rain float down with the grace of butterflies,

As if arranging some meaning in most rhythmic verse.

They resonate in the ear like a sweet melody,

And skies seem to weep for the grass on earth.

Each drop has said farewell to its heavenly life,

And returns to its origin, which is a roaring ocean.

Everything on earth holds still to listen to rain;

Each drop descends to the ground like an angel.

Eyes seeing the rain fall in such thrilling harmony

See worlds beyond this world come into view.

The skies rejoice with smiles observed everywhere;

Everyone is enchanted by the heavenly rhapsody.

Vapor rises in masses as great as mountains,

Then it seeks the green, blue and orange on earth.

Rain always brings down a peculiar contentment,

And carries fragrance of Paradise and exhilaration.

That fragrance pervades everywhere, deep into the soul,

Earth awakens to life and flowers burst open.

The whole of creation finds peace and serenity,

The window open to the realms beyond becomes visible.

Moeder is ziek
terwijl narcissen bloeien. Terwijl in de tuin paps
het gras loopt te snoeien. Kijk, daar lag een speel
veld. En daar stond mijn strandwagen. Beschilderd

Poem

In my dreams my door was knocked at, "Who is it?" I asked from inside. Some elderly lady from the outside Answered and said, "I'd sacrifice myself for you."

"I've come to ask for a piece of bread as charity I'm a poor orphan woman with no one to support me." At this point I opened my door immediately, Only to find a miracle; it was my deceased mother indeed!

I was shocked but fell into her arms; And my mother said, "It's me, it's me, I've come to try you and to check on you. I hope life hasn't changed your spirit and also you?!"

I came in the form of a beggar So that the whole world can be a witness To see if your conscience, my dear son, If your conscience also died along with me?!"

Uit: Letters Written in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark

“In writing these desultory letters, I found I could not avoid being continually the first person – 'the little hero of each tale.' I tried to correct this fault, if it be one, for they were designed for publication; but in proportion as I arranged my thoughts, my letter, I found, became stiff and affected: I, therefore, determined to let my remarks and reflections flow unrestrained, as I perceived that I could not give a just description of what I saw, but by relating the effect different objects had produced on my mind and feelings, whilst the impression was still fresh.”

(…)

“Reaching the cascade, or rather cataract, the roaring of which had a long time announced its vicinity, my soul was hurried by the falls into a new train of reflections. The impetuous dashing of the rebounding torrent from the dark cavities which mocked the exploring eye, produced an equal activity in my mind: my thoughts darted from earth to heaven, and I asked myself why I was chained to life and its misery? Still the tumultuous emotions this sublime object excited, were pleasurable; and, viewing it, my soul rose, with renewed dignity, above its cares – grasping at immortality – it seemed as impossible to stop the current of my thoughts, as of the always varying, still the same, torrent before me – I stretched out my hand to eternity, bounding over the dark speck of life to come.”

Uit: The assistant

„The early November street was dark though night had ended, but thewind, to the grocer's surprise, already clawed. It flung his apron intohis face as he bent for the two milk cases at the curb. Morris Boberdragged the heavy boxes to the door, panting. A large brown bag ofhard rolls stood in the doorway along with the sour-faced, gray-hairedPoilisheh huddled there, who wanted one.

What's the matter so late?'' Ten after six,'' said the grocer.

Is cold,'' she complained.

Turning the key in the lock he let her in. Usually he lugged inthe milk and lit the gas radiators, but the Polish woman was impatient.

Morris poured the bag of rolls into a wire basket on the counter andfound an unseeded one for her. Slicing it in halves, he wrapped it inwhite store paper. She tucked the roll into her cord market bag andleft three pennies on the counter. He rang up the sale on an old noisycash register, smoothed and put away the bag the rolls had come in,finished pulling in the milk, and stored the bottles at the bottom ofthe refrigerator. He lit the gas radiator at the front of the store andwent into the back to light the one there.

He boiled up coffee in a blackened enamel pot and sipped it, chewing on a roll, not tasting what he was eating. After he had cleanedup he waited; he waited for Nick Fuso, the upstairs tenant, a youngmechanic who worked in a garage in the neighborhood. Nick came inevery morning around seven for twenty cents' worth of ham and aloaf of bread.

But the front door opened and a girl of ten entered, her facepinched and eyes excited. His heart held no welcome for her.

My mother says,'' she said quickly, can you trust her tilltomorrow for a pound of butter, loaf of rye bread and a small bottleof cider vinegar?''

He knew the mother. No more trust.''

The girl burst into tears.

Morris gave her a quarter-pound of butter, the bread and vinegar.“

20. März 1978

20. März 1978
Liebe Mutter die Reise ist zuende und
ich gewinne allmählich meine ursprüng-
liche Gestalt zurück
gesorgt
So was verringert doch die Lebenserwartung
darf: Warum schreiben Sie? Ich habe mir
vorgenommen darauf nicht mehr zu ant-
worten
In Zürich habe ich gefroren mehr als
in Freiburg und Warmbronn. In den Schau-
fenstern Eier aus Holz und Teig Ton Eisen
Kalk Schokolade und Blech - einige kunst-
voll gefärbt mit Rotholz Blauholz Gelbholz
Sandelholz und ich dachte: Ist denn bald
Ostern?

Nein, mach kein Licht.

Ich will im Dunkeln gehen.

Ich brauche, wenn ich gehe, dein Gesicht

nicht mit den Augen sehen.

Denn meine Seele nimmt es mit.

Uit: Dicht auf den Fersen

Er schlug nach ihr. Da wurde ihr Gesicht
sehr schmal und farblos wie erstarrter Brei.
Er hätte gern ihr Hirn gesehn. - Das Licht
blieb grell.

voraus. Und sie begriff auch diesen nicht.

Vérité toujours

Oui, oui, c'est la vérité, la seule;

gelijkenis verstaan wij ieder teeken.

Want oeroud is 't heelal, maar wij beleven

steeds de hernieuwing van dien verren dag,

toen 't eerste bruidspaar bij elkander lag

- schuldloos en glanzend, als wij heden zijn -

en vinden altijd weer, hoe ver verdreven,

dat we onvervreemdbaar aan dat Eden zijn.

Doodziek

Vannacht heb ik geslapen

met de dood, ze lag naast me

als een vrouw, groots, mooi

ze was heel lief en fluisterde

geheimzinnige verhalen.

Ik heb uren naar haar gekeken

zonder haar aan te raken

Ik dacht altijd dat de dood

een verschrikkelijk lelijke man was

Uit: Dervish and Death (Vertaald door Bogdan Rakić en Stephen M. Dickey)

„We are no one's, always at a boundary, always someone’s dowry. Is it a wonder then that we are poor? For centuries now we have been seeking our true selves, yet soon we will not know who we are, we will forget that we ever wanted anything; others do us the honour of calling us under their banner for we have none, they lure us when we are needed and discard us when we have outserved the purpose they gave us. We remain the saddest little district of the world, the most miserable people of the world, losing our own persona and nor being able to take on anyone else's, torn away and not accepted, alien to all and everyone, including those with whom we are most closely related, but who will not recognise us as their kin. We live on a divide between worlds, at the border between nations, always at a fault to someone and first to be struck. Waves of history strike us as a sea cliff. Crude force has worn us out and we made a virtue out of a necessity: we grew smart out of spite.“

Blijdschap

Blijdschap om een kind dat lacht,
om een mens die op je wacht,
is een waardevol moment
waarmee je gelukkig bent.

Frühlingsglaube

Die linden Lüfte sind erwacht,

Sie säuseln und weben Tag und Nacht,

Sie schaffen an allen Enden.

O frischer Duft, o neuer Klang!

Nun, armes Herze, sei nicht bang!

Nun muß sich alles, alles wenden.

Die Welt wird schöner mit jedem Tag,

Man weiß nicht, was noch werden mag,

Das Blühen will nicht enden.

Es blüht das fernste, tiefste, Tal:

Nun, armes Herz, vergiß der Qual!

Nun muß sich alles, alles wenden.

An einem heiteren Morgen

O blaue Luft nach trüben Tagen,

Wie kannst du stillen meine Klagen?

Wer nur am Regen krank gewesen,

Der mag durch Sonnenschein genesen.

O blaue Luft nach trüben Tagen,

Doch stillt du meine bittern Klagen;

Du glänzest Ahnung mir zum Herzen,

Wie himmlisch Freude labt nach Schmerzen.

Gott spielen
