His voice was high, almost feminine, and he spoke with delicate careful intonation. Then he put the lamp on the counter and surveyed the two of us'Is it about a bicycle?' he asked.

'Not that' said the Sergeant. 'This is a private visitor who says he did not arrive in the townland upon a bicycle. He has no personal name at all. His dadda is in far Amurikey.'

'Policeman MacCruiskeen put the lamp on the table, shook hands with me and gave me the time of day with great gravity. His voice was high, almost feminine, and he spoke with delicate careful intonation. Then he put the lamp on the counter and surveyed the two of us.

'Is it about a bicycle?' he asked.

'Not that' said the Sergeant. 'This is a private visitor who says he did not arrive in the townland upon a bicycle. He has no personal name at all. His dadda is in far Amurikey.'

'Which of the two Amurikeys?' asked MacCruiskeen.

'The Unified Stations,' said the Sergeant.

'Likely he is rich by now if he is in that quarter,' said MacCruiskeen, 'because there's dollars there, dollars and bucks and nuggets in the ground and any amount of rackets and golf games and musical instruments. It is a free country too by all accounts.'

'Free for all,' said the Sergeant. 'Tell me this,' he said to the policeman, 'Did you take any readings today?'

'I did,' said MacCruiskeen.

'Take out your black book and tell me what it was like a good man,' said the Sergeant. Give me the gist of it till I see what I see,' he added.

MacCruiskeen fished a small black book from his breast pocket.

'Ten point six,' he said.

'Ten point six,' said the Sergeant. 'And what reading did you notice on the beam?'

'Seven point four.'

'How much on the lever?'

'One point five'

There was a pause here. The Sergeant put on an expression of great intricacy as if he were doing far-from-simple sums and calculations in his head. After a time his face cleared and he spoke again to his companion“.

Schwarze Haare, schwarze Augen. Dunkelbraune Haut“

Uit: Curfew (Vertaald door Alfred MacAdam)

„Finally, a year after Judit had returned from Caracas, they managed to pick up the trail of Medina, the man who had given her the passport so she could leave. He'd been discovered to be a leftist infiltrator in the passports section, had disappeared, and was assumed dead.... Medina was erased by the terror, gone forever for his wife and children. But in a certain sense less gone for Judit, since she would take vengeance for him as well when she eliminated the man with the nasal voice who had condemned them all to lives with no meaning more complex than the simplifications wrought by obsession. She put her hand in her bag: the shot would pass right through the two necks in front of her and hit the forehead of the guilty man, who was holding up Boris's snout and his stub of a tail, showing off the champion's unbeatable lines.
"He's skinny," commented Farias.
Skinny. My skinny. Nasal, yes, but it wasn't the same voice. Even so, doubts and all, she would have to kill him. Because what right did this man have to pardon her? From what improvised source did the legality of his power emanate, so that he could murder or pardon? That's why he would have to die. Judit took the pistol out of her bag. She clicked off the safety.
She raised her arm in the half-light, aiming first, tentatively, at the back of Manungo's neck. Death. That's what she wished for them in that instance. The consummation she'd never been capable of achieving. Except with that impotent shadow in the cell, who made her lie about pleasure and pain to save her. But it was no lie. It was the savage surprise of orgasm devoid of sex--physiological, sad, solitary--which a torturer with a nasal voice and moist hands had been capable of giving her. That's     why he had to be eliminated.“

Uit: A Word About Words (Vertaald door A. G. Brain)

„The prize which it is my honor to receive today is called a peace prize and has been awarded to me by booksellers, in other words, people whose business is the dissemina tion of words. It is therefore appropriate, perhaps, that I should reflect here today on the mysterious link between words and peace, and in general on the mysterious power of words in human history.

In the beginning was the Word; so it states on the first page of one of the most important books known to us. What is meant in that book is that the Word of God is the source of all creation. But surely the same could be said, figuratively speaking, of every human action? And indeed, words can bc said to be the very source of our being, and in fact the very substance of the cosmic life form we call man. Spirit, the human soul, our self awareness, our ability to generalize and think in concepts, to perceive the world as the world (and not just as our locality), and lastly, our capacity for knowing that we will die-and living in spite of that knowledge: surely all these are mediated or actually created by words?

If the Word of God is the source of God's entire creation, then that part of God's creation which is the human race exists as such only thanks to another of God's miracles-the miracle of human speech. And if this miracle is the key to the history of mankind, then it is also the key to the history of society. Indeed, it might well be the former just because it is the latter. For the fact is that if they were not a means of communication between two or more human "I"s, then words would probably not exist at all.

All these things have been known to us-or people have at least suspected them-since time immemorial. There has never been.a time when a sense of the importance of words was not present in human consciousness.“

Missing Persons

Almost four hundred people are reported missing in Sweden every year.

A brother’s reported as absent.
A sister’s gone without a trace.
She speaks with a local accent,
And he has a scar on his face.

He belongs to the young generation,
And she is not very old.
That’s all. There’s no more information.
Oh, yes: it’s getting quite cold.

From the chill, barren wasteland that’s out there
Comes no sound save an anguished bird’s cry.
Four hundred souls are there somewhere:
They could easily be you or I.

Lullaby

Sleep my baby, don't be sad
'cause you've got no Mom or Dad.
Time will heal such trifles.

Dream of battles myriad,
dream of guns and rifles.

Listen to the bugle's call!
Dream away: you're still too small
for marching into battle.
When you're big you'll see it all
and have your own death rattle.

Sleep, my baby, do not cry;
there's time before you need to sigh
And moan and bleed, God willing.
All of us are born to die,
and some to do the killing.

Uit: Le Neveu de Rameau

„LUI.

Uit: A Man Leaping Into the Future

“In the aeroplane there was still the semblance of an ordered existence. I was flying from Rome to Palermo on a Thursday evening in March - that much was certain. I sat in the window seat I had been assigned, I had watched the stewardess when she indicated where the life jackets were kept and demonstrated how to place the oxygen mask over one’s face, I had used my safety belt when we took off, I did not smoke, since it was forbidden in this section of the plane, I made no unnecessary noises - in short, I submitted completely to the order of air travel. The impression of an ordered existence was strengthened by the appearance and activities of my fellow-travellers. I was surrounded by businessmen in elegantly cut suits, all immaculate. Most of them were working: an expensive attaché case full of papers on their knees, a calculator on the arm of their seat, a fountain pen in their hand. A stewardess walked down the aisle, bending to left and right, and made herself useful by pouring tiny cups of mineral water - a sobriety that seemed appropriate to this cool world of calculating brains, calculators and controlled lust.
I drank mineral water and leafed through my travel guide, I looked at the sea which lay glittering in blue and gold tints after the setting of the sun, and slowly but surely became full of anxious presentiments, because if I try to be a model passenger, if I keep eagerly to every rule, if I have the urge to pluck imaginary bits of fluff from my jacket, madness is lying in wait for me.”

Uit: Nightwoods

„LUCE’S NEW STRANGER CHILDREN were small and beautiful and violent. She learned early that it wasn’t smart to leave them unattended in the yard with the chickens. Later she’d fi nd feathers, a

scaled yellow foot with its toes clenched. Neither child displayed language at all, but the girl glared murderous expressions at her if she dared ask where the rest of the rooster went.

The children loved fi re above all elements of creation. A heap of dry combustibles delighted them beyond reason. Luce began hiding the kitchen matches, except the few she kept in the hip pocket of her jeans for lighting the stove. Within two days, the children learned how to make their own fi re from tinder and a green stick bowed with a shoelace. Tiny cavemen on Benzedrine couldn’t have made fi re faster. Then they set the back corner of the Lodge alight, and Luce had to run back and forth from the spring with sloshing tin buckets to put it out.

She switched them both equally with a thin willow twig until their legs were striped pink, and it became clear that they would draw whatever pain came to them down deep inside and refuse to cry. At which point Luce swore to herself she would never strike them again.

She went to the kitchen and began making a guilty peach pie. LUCE WAS NOT MUCH MATERNAL. The State put the children on her. If she had not agreed to take them, they would have been separated and adopted out like puppies. By the time they were grown, they wouldn’t even remember each other.

Though now that it was probably too late to go back, maybe that would have been a good thing. Separate them and dilute whatever weirdness they shared and ignited between them. Yet more proof, as if you needed it, that the world would be a better place if every- damn- body didn’t feel some deep need to reproduce. But God in his infi nite wisdom had apparently thought it was an entertaining idea for us to always be wanting to get up in one another.“

„So I am not going to think of the mysterious statue and say sph- is soft (face of a woman, and we may think of sphagnum moss), the middle part is retentive-sounding, and the x is for unknown. I am going to consult several reliable lexicographical sources, and report to you that the original Sphinx, the monster whose riddle Oedipus solved, was named by the Greeks from their verb sphingein, to squeeze, because she strangled her victims. Pronouncing sphincter, or squeeze, constricts the throat.

Oddly enough, McLuhan did his Ph.D. dissertation on Thomas Nashe, who described a comely maid as "fat and plum every part of her as a plover, a skin as slick and soft as the back of a swan, it doth me good when I remember her. Like a birde she tript on the ground, and bare out her belly as majestical as an Estrich." (In one or two places I have slightly modernized Nashe's Elizabethan spelling, but I wouldn't touch Estrich. Another old version of ostrich was Austridge. The roots go back, via the Latin avis struthio, to the Greek strouthokamelos, camel-sparrow.)

I say "oddly enough" because McLuhan, according to Marchand, "was never interested in the 'music of words.'" In Understanding Media, McLuhan maintained that the phonetic alphabet-"in which semantically meaningless letters are used to correspond to semantically meaningless sounds"-had alienated people from the body. The ink had hardly dried on that notion when the Free Speech Movement broke out at Berkeley, and pretty soon people were running naked and letting their hair grow wild.“

I blow my pipes

I blow my pipes, the glad birds sing,
The fat young nymphs about me spring,
The sweaty centaur leaps the trees
And bites his dryad's splendid knees;
The sky, the water, the earth
Repeat aloud our noisy mirth...
Anon, tight-bellied bacchanals,
With ivy from the vineyard walls,
Lead out and crown with shining glass
The wine's red baby on the grass.

          *

I blow my pipes, the glad birds sing,
The fat young nymphs about me spring,
I am the lord,
I am the lod,
I am the lord of everything!

Uit: Goddess of Vengeance

„It was early evening and the garden restaurant was only half full. The patrons were trying to play it cool, because after all, this was L.A. and stars abounded. However, most of them couldn’t resist an occasional surreptitious glance over at Venus, the platinum-blond, world-famous superstar, as she picked at a chopped vegetable salad.

Sitting at the table with her was Lucky Santangelo, a dark-haired beauty who’d experienced her own share of controversial headlines and scandals over the years. Lucky, the former owner and head of Panther Studios, was a businesswoman supreme who currently owned the luxurious hotel, casino, and apartment complex The Keys in Las Vegas.

The two of them made a formidable couple. In Hollywood, where looks were everything, Venus and Lucky ruled. Venus with her in-your-face blondness, startling blue eyes, and toned and muscled shape. And Lucky—a dangerously seductive woman with blacker-than-night eyes, deep olive skin, sensuous full lips, a tangle of long jet hair, and a lithe body.

“I’m beginning to think you’re a sex addict,” Lucky said lightly, smiling at her close friend.

“Excuse me,” Venus retorted, raising a perfectly arched and penciled eyebrow. “Last week you called me a cougar, and now I’m a sex addict. Seriously, Lucky?”

Pushing back her mane of unruly black curls, Lucky grinned. “Yeah. I’m so wrong,” she drawled sarcastically. “It wasn’t you who slept with your twenty-two-year-old costar last week, and it wasn’t you who screwed your sixty-year-old director two days later.”

[...] Il fait un temps de Tiepolo!

Et pourquoi ne pas soupirer, Madame!

J'ai du Whistler à l'âme !

[…] Un kiosque rose de Dufy

Suffit

À recéler le merveilleux, le miel de l’outre-ciel;

Uit: The Schemes Of The Kaiser (Vertaald door J.O.P. Bland)

„It is one of his ambitions to put an end to class warfare in Germany. To this end he begins, with his usual tact, by denouncing the capitalists (that is to say; the wealth of the middle class) to the

workers, and then holds up the scandalous luxury of the aristocracy in the army to the contempt of the bourgeois.

One of his most brilliant and at the same time most futile efforts, is his rescript on the subject of the shortage of officers for the army. As the army itself is steadily increasing every day, it should have

been easy in each regiment for him, gradually and quite quietly, to increase the number of officers drawn from the middle-class; indeed, the change would have practically effected itself, for the Minister of War had a hundred-and-one means of bringing it about.  But this rescript has put a check on what might otherwise have been a natural process of change, and unless William now settles matters with a high hand, it will cease.  In every regiment the aristocracy provides the great majority of officers; bourgeois candidates for admission to the service are liable to be black-balled, just as they might be at any club; it is now safe to predict that they will henceforward be regarded with less favour than ever, and that generals, colonels, majors and the rest will form up into a solid phalanx, to prevent the Emperor's platonic _protégés_ from getting in.“

Elle n'est pas morte

On l'a tuée à coups d'chassepots,

À coups de mitrailleuses,

Et roulée avec son drapeau

Dans la terre argileuse !

Et la tourbe des bourreaux gras

Se croyait la plus forte.

Refrain

Tout ça n'empêche pas, Nicolas,

Qu'la Commune n'est pas morte !

(2 fois)

Comme faucheurs rasant un pré,

Comme on abat des pommes,

Les Versaillais ont massacré

Pour le moins cent-mille hommes !

Et les cent-mille assassinats,

Voyez c'que ça rapporte...

Refrain

On a bien fusillé Varlin,

Flourens, Duval, Millière,

Ferré, Rigault, Tony Moilin,

Gavé le cimetière.

On croyait lui couper les bras

Et lui vider l'aorte.

Refrain

Ils ont fait acte de bandits,

Comptant sur le silence,

Achevé les blessés dans leur lit,

Dans leur lit d'ambulance !

Et le sang inondant les draps

Ruisselait sous la porte !

Refrain

Les journalistes, policiers,

Marchands de calomnies,

Ont répandu sur nos charniers

Leurs flots d'ignominies !

Les Maxime Du Camp, les Dumas

Ont vomi leur eau-forte.

Refrain

Et ça prouve à tous les Judas

Qu'si ça marche de la sorte,

Refrain

Ils sentiront dans peu, nom de Dieu,

Qu'la Commune n'est pas morte !
