»He, du da, haste was Bares?»

Uit: Pride And Prejudice

"I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley might like you the best of the party."

"My dear, you flatter me. I certainly have had my share of beauty, but I do not pretend to be anything extraordinary now. When a woman has five grown-up daughters, she ought to give over thinking of her own beauty."

"In such cases, a woman has not often much beauty to think of."

"But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood."

"It is more than I engage for, I assure you."

"But consider your daughters. Only think what an establishment it would be for one of them. Sir William and Lady Lucas are determined to go, merely on that account, for in general you know they visit no newcomers. Indeed you must go, for it will be impossible for us to visit him if you do not."

"You are over scrupulous surely. I dare say Mr. Bingley will be very glad to see you; and I will send a few lines by you to assure him of my hearty consent to his marrying whichever he chooses of the girls; though I must throw in a good word for my little Lizzy."

"I desire you will do no such thing. Lizzy is not a bit better than the others; and I am sure she is not half so handsome as Jane, nor half so good-humoured as Lydia. But you are always giving her the preference."

"They have none of them much to recommend them," replied he; "they are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters."

"Mr. Bennet, how can you abuse your own children in such a way? You take delight in vexing me. You have no compassion on my poor nerves."

"You mistake me, my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these twenty years at least."

"Ah! you do not know what I suffer."

"But I hope you will get over it, and live to see many young men of four thousand a year come into the neighbourhood."

"It will be no use to us if twenty such should come since you will not visit them."

"Depend upon it, my dear, that when there are twenty, I will visit them all."

Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three and twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Her mind was less difficult to develop. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news.”

London Pride :

London Pride has been handed down to us,
London Pride is a flower that's free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride is forever will be.
Whoa, Liza,
See the coster barrows,
The vegetables and the fruit piled high,
Oh, Liza,
Little London sparrows,
Covent Garden Market where the costers cry.

Cockney feet
Mark the beat of history.
Every street pins a memory down.
Nothing ever can quite replace
The grace of London Town.

There's a little city flower,
Ever spring unveiling,
Growing in the crevices,
By some London railing.
Though it has a Latin name
In town and countryside,
We in England call it
London Pride.

London Pride has been handed down to us,
London Pride is a flower that's free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it forever will be.
Hey, lady,
When the day is dawning,
See the policeman yawning
On his lonely beat.
Gay lady,
Mayfair in the morning,
Hear your footsteps echo
In the empty street.

Early rain,
And the pavement's glistening,
All Park Lane
In a shimmering gown.
Nothing ever could break or harm
The charm
Of London Town.

In our city, darkened now,
Street and square and crescent,
We can feel our living past
In our shadowed present.
Ghosts beside our starlit Thames
Who lived and loved and died
Keep throughout the ages
London Pride.

London Pride has been handed down to us,
London Pride is a flower that's free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it forever will be.
Grey city,
Stubbornly implanted,
Taken so for granted
For a thousand years.
Stay, city,
Smokily enchanted,
Cradle of our memories,
Of our hopes and fears.

Every Blitz,
Your resistance toughening.
From the Ritz
To the Anchor and Crown,
Nothing ever could override
The pride
Of London Town.

In de straten van Tepalka

gelijknamige roman):

De lichtgroene maandag
blinkt
op dit verplichte zwijgen;
geen zucht verbreekt de aureool
die ik om uw lichaam vlocht.
Witte vlokken
zwemmen in mijn ziel
Schaduwen schuiven.
Een lichtstraal
brandt tot op mijn huid.
In de straten van Tepalka
braken vrouwen dobbelstenen.

In de regentijd

in de regentijd
spreken de rooien zachtjes
met schuimende woorden

angst schept kracht
vrees gedijt ongehinderd
de ziel blokkeert het hopen
onkruid schiet omhoog

in het veel te grote huis
op het veel te koude bed
strijkt van heel ver weg
de oude schaduw neer

god heeft de stroom afgesneden
de wereld zit zonder licht
geen kruis op de schedelberg

wie loopt er in de duisternis?
wie slingert er doelloos rond?
wie is bevriend met vuurvliegjes?

wie hoort het aftellen
van god
of de scheids bij het boksen?

Punishments

It is when gulfs and bays of blood,

clotted with dead and vengeful stars,

flood into my dreams.

When gulfs and bays of blood

capsize the beds that were sailing,

and, on the world's right, an angel dies forgotten.

When the winds reek of brimstone

and mouths by night taste of bone, glass, and wire.

Hear me.

I did not know that doors moved from place to place,

that souls could blush for their bodies,

nor that at the end of a tunnel, the light would bring death.

Hear me yet.

The sleepers want to run away.

But those graves of the sea are not still,

those graves which open through

neglect and weariness of the sky are not stable,

and the dawns stumble upon disfigured faces.

Hear me yet. There's still more.

There are nights when the hours turn to stone in space,

when veins do not flow

and when the silences raise up centuries and gods to come.

A thunderbolt shuffles tongues and jumbles words.

Think of the shattered spheres,

of the dry orbits of the uninhabited men,

of the dumb millennia.

More, more yet. Hear me.

You can see that bodies are not where they were,

that the moon is growing cold through being stared at,

and that a child's crying deforms the constellations.

Mildewed skies corrode our desert brows,

where each minute buries its nameless corpse.

Hear me, hear me for the last time.

For there's always a last time

that follows the fall of the high wasteland,

the advent of the cold in forgetful dreams,

and death's headlong stoops upon the skeleton of nothingness.

Demandez au goujon quand le brochet le happe ;

„Twenty-three miles of industrial racket, twenty-three miles of cement works, paper-mills, power stations, dock basins, cranes and conveyors shattering to the ear. From now on, no silence. In the bar at thre Royal Clarence at Gravesend, once a house built for a duke’s mistress, it is all talk of up-anchoring, and everyone has an eye on the ships going down as the ebb begins, at the rate of two a minute. The tugs blaspheme. One lives in an orchestra of chuggings, whinings, the clanking and croaking of anchors, the spinning of winches, the fizz of steam, and all kinds of shovellings, rattlings, and whistlings, broken once in a while by a loud human voice shouting an unprintable word. Opposite are the liners like hotels, waiting to go to Africa, India, the Far East; down come all the traders of Europe and all the flags from Finland to Japan. You take in lungfuls of coal smoke and diesel fume; the docks and wharves send out stenches in clouds across the water: gusts of raw timber, coal gas, camphor, and the gluey, sickly reek of bulk sugar. The Thames smells of goods: of hides, the muttonish reek of wool, the heady odours of hops, the sharp smell of packing cases, of fish, frozen meat, bananas from Tenerife, bacon from Scandanavia,

Before us are ugly places with ancient names where the streets are packed with clownish Cockneys and West Indian immigrants, the traffic heavy. Some of them on the north side between Tilbury and Bethnal Green are slums, dismal, derelict, bombed; some of them so transformed since 1940 by fine building that places with bad names – Ratcliff Highway and Limehouse Causeway and Wapping – are now respectable and even elegant. The old East End has a good deal been replaced by a welfare city since 1946.“

Uit: Aunt Deborah

„A crosser old woman than Mrs. Deborah Thornby was certainly not to be found in the whole village of Hilton. Worth, in country phrase, a power of money, and living (to borrow another rustic expression) upon her means, the exercise of her extraordinary faculty for grumbling and scolding seemed the sole occupation of her existence, her only pursuit, solace, and amusement; and really it would have been a great pity to have deprived the poor woman of a pastime so consolatory to herself, and which did harm to nobody: her family consisting only of an old labourer, to guard the house, take care of her horse, her cow, and her chaise and cart, and work in the garden, who was happily, for his comfort, stone deaf, and could not hear her vituperation, and of a parish girl of twelve, to do the indoor work, who had been so used to be scolded all her life, that she minded the noise no more than a miller minds the clack of his mill, or than people who live in a churchyard mind the sound of the church bells, and would probably, from long habit, have felt some miss of the sound had it ceased, of which, by the way, there was small danger, so long as Mrs. Deborah continued in this life. Her crossness was so far innocent that it hurt nobody except herself. But she was also cross-grained, and that evil quality is unluckily apt to injure other people; and did so very materially in the present instance.“

ABSTRACTION

There are in space millions of gentle stars,

To the reach of your sight... but thou conjecture

The ones thou don´t see, igneous and obscure roses

Exuberating in the farthest height of heights.

There are in Earth millions of beautiful women,

To the reach of your desire... but thou search for

The ones who don´t live, dream and affection thou do not enjoy

Neither will, past or future visions.

Thus, in an abstraction of numbers and images,

Thou live. You look with boredom at the isolated and sad planet

And find the heavenly vault desert and dark.

And thou´ll die, alone, between two mirages:

The stars with no name- the light thou´ve never seen,

And the women with no body- the love thou´ve not had!

In Bellman’s time

Carl Michael Bellman

often felt quite atrocious

in the morning.

Carl Michael Bellman wanted

so much to have a quick drink

but knew it just wasn’t on.

Carl Michael Bellman’s mornings

were prosaic,

then he wrote poetry.

With seething stomach and liver

like a stone

Carl Michael Bellman sat

in his cold room and would have

given almost anything

for a glass of hock

or to see a tankard full of ale

but he stood his ground.

Carl Michael Bellman’s fingers

were sore and it hurt

to play the lute.

He played and looked out over

the chimney-topped roofs and the wet snow.

He said to himself:

Give up now, Carl Michael Bellman

throw your pen down now

and give up,

sell your lute now and mull

a glass of red wine with cloves

the devil take the lot of it.

He felt quite atrocious in the morning did

Carl Michael Bellman

To hell with you, Ulla & Movitz

it said inside his head

though on the paper different music came

(Your health, comrades, your health, dear sisters!)

and in the evening things were a bit better.

Chromo

I.

Een dag vol zon en een kasteel

Met zomersch park en toebehooren:

Een koekoek, zwanen, kikkerkoren,

De speelsche zefier in 't struweel. -

De brave tuinman draagt klassiek

Zijn bruinverbrande panama;

En 't grauwe muschje treedt zijn ga

Herhaaldelijk en in 't publiek.

De boterblommen in de wei

Staan argeloos brutaal te bloeien,

Twee nuttelooze vlinders stoeien

En uw gezicht en mijn gezicht

Gaan 's avonds als de bloemen toe.

Het zuiver en volmaakt plezier

Waarvan wij ongeloovig lazen

Werd voor ons kinderlijk verbazen

Tot werklijkheid, vandaag en hier.

En láter vindt de gramofoon

Met een versleten melodie:

‘Oh mon amour, oh mon amie’,

Tot goed besluit, den juisten toon.

II.

Wij zijn nog altijd, god zij dank,

Precies hetzelfde als in de jaren

Toen wij verliefd en achttien waren

En schaamtloos vrijden op een bank.

Que voulez-vous? Zoo'n wit kasteel, -

Met tuin en zomeroverdaad -

Brengt ons in onzen waren staat:

Naief-, banaal- sentimenteel.

Niet zeer beschaafd en niet modern;

Strand in Besitz.

Uit: Saints And Sinners

„In one lapel a small green-and-gold harp, and in the other a flying angel. His blue jacket had seen better days. He wore a black felt homburg hat, and his white hair fell in coils almost to his shoulders. His skin was sallow, but his huge hands were a dark nut brown, and on the right hand he had a lopsided knuckle, obviously caused by some injury. Above it, on the wrist, he wore a wide black strap. He could have been any age, and he seemed like a man on whom a permanent frost had settled. He drank the Guinness slowly, lifting the glass with a measured gravity. We were in a massive pub named Biddy Mulligan’s, in North London, on St. Patrick’s Day, and the sense of expectation was palpable. Great banners with HAPPY ST. PATRICK draped the walls, and numerous flat television screens carried pictures of the homeland, featuring hills, dales, lakes, tidy towns, and highlights of famed sporting moments down the years. Little votive lamps, not unlike Sacred Heart lamps, were nailed in corners to various wooden beams and seemed talismanic on that momentous day. Only three people were there, the quiet man, a cracked woman with tangled hair gabbling away, and myself.

Adrian, the young barman, was chalking up the promised delights, large Jameson at less than half price, teeny dishes of Irish stew and apple cake for free. Moreover, the governor had left a box full of green woolly hats and green scarves that were reserved to be given to the regular customers. Adrian was young and affable, asking if I needed more coffee and wondering if the quiet man, whom he called Rafferty, would like a refill, in honor of the day. Much to the chagrin of Clodagh, the spry young assistant, Adrian indulged his nostalgia by playing “Galway Shawl” on the jukebox, over and over again.

The coffee that I had been served was dire, but I lingered, because of being early for an appointment, and picked up a newspaper that was lying on the vacant table next to me. Disaster and scandals featured prominently. Further unrest was reported in a northern province of China; an actress was pictured being helped out of a nightclub in a state of inebriation; another photograph showed her arriving only a few hours earlier wearing a white clinging dress and perilously high heels.“

Sie hat mich in die Luft hervorgerufen;

O Stundengang! o Segen irdischer Haft!
Was aber bricht an jener Uferstelle

Doch still!
Strandbürtig Volk, verwegene nackte Knaben;
Mit halben Blicken streifend Baum und Rohr;
Ein andrer findet Muscheln unterdessen.
Bald, schöner Schmetterling, bist du vergessen.
Nun lass dich erst mir hoher Lust beschauen!
In Flügelunterflächen, scheinbar grauen,
Luft, Feuer, Wasser, Stein, mein eigenes Wesen
Erfahr ich schmerzentzückt zum ersten Mal -
Fort! Fort! Ich will kein Wissen keine Wahl!
Ein Heisses, Kreisendes will mich bezwingen,
Vom Geisterdienste los, muss ich mich ringen, -
Wohin?

Laisse de mes longs jours vaciller le flambeau ;
Seul il soutient la masse à demi soulevée ;

Mon dernier jour s'avance,

Atons Cat

The warmth and light, Kiss

all the land, and

Raising up my comforting

hand, placing a disk

to play their ghosts

to let them dance;

the feline hosts.

Nefertiti strokes the tail

as it coils around, slow

like a snail.

A pleasant purr, accents

the sentiment; Wine in abundant

Jugs, spiritual sediment.

Nairobi plains adjust to heat...

The Nile has her disciples

The sermon complete!

The fur of ancient Gods

Like silk, the sun bathes

The soul in mothers milk.

Accordingly like a conspired

kill, the heart gives up its

living thrills; into the afterworld

Where its guardian has kept,

Atons grace

Where the animal once slept.

Myth

Long afterward, Oedipus, old and blinded, walked the

roads. He smelled a familiar smell. It was

the Sphinx. Oedipus said, 'I want to ask one question.

Why didn't I recognize my mother?' 'You gave the

wrong answer,' said the Sphinx. 'But that was what

made everything possible,' said Oedipus. 'No,' she said.

'When I asked, What walks on four legs in the morning,

two at noon, and three in the evening, you answered,

Man. You didn't say anything about woman.'

'When you say Man,' said Oedipus, 'you include women

too. Everyone knows that.' She said, 'That's what

you think.'

Painters

In the cave with a long-ago flare

a woman stands, her arms up. Red twig, black twig, brown twig.

A wall of leaping darkness over her.

The men are out hunting in the early light

But here in this flicker, one or two men, painting

and a woman among them.

Great living animals grow on the stone walls,

their pelts, their eyes, their sex, their hearts,

and the cave-painters touch them with life, red, brown, black,

a woman among them, painting.

Naoogst
