”Zakelijke aanpak, Maarten.
‘Whisky on the rocks.’
‘Jajajajajaja.’

Uit: At Last

“‘Surprised to see me?’ said Nicholas Pratt, planting his walking stick on the crematorium carpet and fixing Patrick with a look of slightly aimless defiance, a habit no longer useful but too late to change. ‘I’ve become rather a memorial-creeper. One’s bound to at my age.
It’s no use sitting at home guffawing over the ignorant mistakes of juvenile obituarists, or giving in to the rather monotonous pleasure of counting the daily quota of extinct contemporaries. No! One has to “celebrate the life”: there goes the school tart. They say he had a good war, but I know better! – that sort of thing, put the whole achievement in perspective. Mind you, I’m not saying it isn’t all very moving. There’s a sort of swelling orchestra effect to these last days. And plenty of horror, of course. Padding about on my daily rounds from hospital bed to memorial pew and back again, I’m reminded of those oil tankers that used to dash themselves onto the rocks every other week and the flocks of birds dying on the beaches with their wings stuck together and their bewildered yellow eyes blinking.’
Nicholas glanced into the room. ‘Thinly attended,’ he murmured, as if preparing a description for someone else. ‘Are those people your mother’s religious friends? Too extraordinary. What colour would you call that suit? Aubergine? Aubergine à la crème d’oursin? I must go to Huntsman and get one knocked up. What do you mean, you have no Aubergine? Everyone was wearing it at Eleanor Melrose’s. Order a mile of it straight away!
‘I suppose your aunt will be here soon. She’ll be an all too familiar face amidst the Aubergines. I saw her last week in New York and I’m pleased to say I was the first to tell her the tragic news about your mother.“

Uit: Confessions of a Mask (Vertaald door Meredith Weatherby)

„I was born two years after the Great Earthquake.  Ten years earlier, as a result of a scandal that occurred while he was serving as a colonial governor, my grandfather had taken the blame for a subordinate's misdeeds and resigned his post.  Thereafter my family began sliding down an incline

... huge debts, foreclosure, sale of the family estate, and then, as financial difficulties multiplied, a morbid vanity blazing higher and higher like some evil impulse.“

(...)

My parents lived on the second floor of the house.  On the pretext that it was hazardous to raise a child on an upper floor, my grandmother snatched me from my mother's arms on my forty-ninth day.  My bed was placed in my grandmother's sickroom, perpetually closed and stifling with odors of

sickness and old age, and I was raised there beside her sickbed.

(...)

On NY morning just prior to my fourth birthday, I vomited something the color of coffee.  THe family doctor was called.  After examining me, he said he was not sure I would recover.  I was given injections of camphor and glucose until I was like a pincushion.  The pulses of both my wrist and upper arm became imperceptible.

Two hours lapsed.  They stood looking down at my corpse.

A shroud was made ready, my favorite toys collected, and all the relatives gathered. Almost another hour passed, and then suddenly urine appeared.  My mother's brother, who was a doctor, said, "He's alive!"  He said it showed the heart had resumed beating.

A little later urine appeared again.  Gradually the vague light of life revived in my cheeks.

That illness, autointoxication - became chronic with me.  It stuck about once a month, now lightly, now seriously, I encountered many crises.  By the sound of the disease's footsteps as it drew near I came to be able to sense whether an attack was likely to approach death or not.“

Uit: Pearl of China

“Before I was Willow, I was Weed. My grandmother, NaiNai, insisted that naming me Weed was better. She believed that the gods would have a hard time making my life go lower if I was already at the bottom. Papa disagreed. "Men want to marry flowers, not weeds." They argued and finally settled for Willow, which was considered "gentle enough to weep and tough enough to be made into farming tools." I always wondered what my mother would have thought if she had lived.
Papa lied to me about my mother's death. Both he and NaiNai told me that Mother died giving birth. But I had already learned otherwise from neighbors' gossip. Papa had "rented" his wife to the town's "Baresticks" in order to pay off his debts. One of the bachelors got Mother pregnant. I was four years old when it happened. To rid her of the "bastard seed," Papa bought magic root powder from an herbalist. Papa mixed the powder with tea and Mother drank it. Mother died along with the seed. It broke Papa's heart, because he had intended to kill the fetus, not his wife. He had no money to buy another wife. Papa was angry at the herbalist, but there was nothing he could do — he had been warned about the poison.
NaiNai feared that she would be punished by the gods for Mother's death. She believed that in her next life she would be a diseased bird and her son a limbless dog. NaiNai burned incense and begged the gods to reduce her sentence. When she ran out of money for incense, she stole. She took me to markets, temples, and graveyards. We would not act until darkness fell. NaiNai moved like an animal on all fours.“

Sonett 1

birgt ihren Saft. An ihr ist Überfluß.

“Allison struggled away from her white Renault, limping with the weight of the last of the pumpkins. She found Clark in the twilight on the twig-and-leaf-littered porch behind the house.

He wore a wool shawl. He was moving up and back in a padded glider, pushed by the ball of his slippered foot.

Allison lowered a big pumpkin, let it rest on the wide floorboards.

Clark was much older-seventy-eight to Allison's thirty-five. They were married. They were both quite tall and looked something alike in their facial features. Allison wore a natural-hair wig. It was a thick blonde hood around her face. She was dressed in bright-dyed denims today. She wore durable clothes, usually, for she volunteered afternoons at a children's daycare center.

She put one of the smaller pumpkins on Clark's long lap. "Now, nothing surreal," she told him. "Carve just a regular face. These are for the kids."

In the foyer, on the Hipplewhite desk, Allison found the maid's chore list with its cross-offs, which included Clark's supper. Allison went quickly through the daily mail: a garish coupon packet, a bill from Jamestown Liquors, November's pay-TV program guide, and the worst thing, the funniest, an already opened, extremely unkind letter from Clark's relations up North. "You're an old fool," Allison read, and, "You're being cruelly deceived." There was a gift check for Clark enclosed, but it was uncashable, signed as it was, "Jesus H. Christ."

Late, late into this night, Allison and Clark gutted and carved the pumpkins together, at an old table set on the back porch, over newspaper after soggy newspaper, with paring knives and with spoons and with a Swiss Army knife Clark used for exact shaping of tooth and eye and nostril. Clark had been a doctor, an internist, but also a Sunday watercolorist. His four pumpkins were expressive and artful. Their carved features were suited to the sizes and shapes of the pumpkins. Two looked ferocious and jagged. One registered surprise. The last was serene and beaming.”

Bidden

Des harten binnenst overleg,
gezegd, gezucht, gedacht!
Het trillen van een stille vlam
die naar de wolken tracht.

Het slaken van een ademtocht,
het vallen van een traan
de blik naar boven van een oog
door God-alléén verstaan.

De eenvoudigheid, het kunstloos waar
der kinderlijke taal,
maar aan wie plaats gegeven wordt
bij ’t Englenlofkoraal.

Des Christens kracht, des Christens lust
des Christens levenslucht
zijn levenskracht in ’t uur des doods,
bij dood en hel geducht.

Des zondaars eerste stemgeluid,
die Jesus valt te voet.
Bij aller heemlen vreugd-gejuich
door ’t "ziet hij bidt!" begroet.

Tot ’s Vaders eer, tot lof des Zoons,
in zin en wil en woord
het door de Heilge Geest gewrocht
volzalig zielsakkoord!

Want bidden doet geen hart alléén,
één Geest dringt ze allen door;
en op zijn Priesterlijke troon
gaat Jesus-zelf ze voor.

Gij-zelf, de Waarheid en de Weg!
ziet biddend op ons neer,
hebt biddend onze strijd volstreên, —
leer Gij ons bidden, Heer!

Uit: Sacred Monsters

“When I was fifteen I fell in love with this statue—not as an art fancier or potential collector or historian, but the way a lover would. Literally. I was a lonely gay kid living in the dorms at an all boys’ school where I would have been beat up if anyone had guessed my inclinations. I was quietly arty—I listened to classical records over at the music building and on my own turntable during the two fifteen-minute periods when we were free to do what we wanted to. I read novels and by the time I had graduated I’d even written two of them (still unpublished).
My boy’s school was Cranbrook, outside Detroit, now long since co-ed but at that time strictly segregated from its sister school, Kingswood, and from the art academy, which was just across the street. The academy trained college-age students in all the arts, from silkscreening to sculpture. In our own small school library I discovered a big book on Rodin with black and white illustrations. I checked it out and took it to my room (we each lived in private rooms).
There I pored over the picture of the statue for weeks on end while I was supposed to be studying and by flashlight after bedtime and lights out. I had no friends, certainly no lovers, but the life-size statue of this 22-year-old Belgian soldier, whose name I learned was Auguste Neyt, became the center of all my fantasies. The statue, at least to the eyes of Rodin’s contemporaries, seemed so disturbingly lifelike that he’d been accused of casting it from life, of pressing the plaster moulds directly to the model’s flesh, as if he were a George Segal avant la lettre. Although Rodin had made a trip to Italy and looked at various Michelangelos while working on The Age of Bronze (the neutral, mysterious title he gave to the work when it was eventually cast in bronze and exhibited in Paris), nevertheless the figure is less heavily muscled than the sculpture of the Renaissance—and modeled in such a way that it made the light falling on it shimmer”.

“When I was writing my first novel, Bright Lights, Big City, I pumped myself up with a soundtrack of rotating LPs in the hope of giving my prose a certain energy and beat, in the hope that some of the visceral power of rock and roll would infuse the page. Among those LPs was Joy Division’s Closer, which shared the turntable with the Talking Heads’ Remain in Light, Television, Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces, and Muddy Waters’s Hard Again. I used to play these albums loud, the idea being that I would simultaneously feel the music in my body even as my mind rose to a state of concentration fierce enough to block it out. Though I knew and had even studied the lyrics of all these albums, I was more interested, for the purposes of my writing, in the beat, and the rhythm and the mood. “No language, just sound, that’s all we need to know,” Ian Curtis wrote in “Transmission.” “To synchronize love to the beat of the show.” I don’t know how conscious a program it was, if I’m overstating it in retrospect, but I think I wanted to see if I could infuse the language with some modicum of the sheer sonic power of rock and roll, somehow transmitting the beat and the mood of my favorite rockers.”

Uit: How To Become A Writer

“First, try to be something, anything, else.  A movie star/astronaut.  A movie star

missionary.  A movie star/kindergarten teacher.  President of the World.  Fail miserably.  It is best if you fail at an early age -- say, fourteen.  Early, critical disillusionment is necessary so that at fifteen you can write long haiku sequences about thwarted desire.  It is a pond, a cherry blossom, a wind brushing against sparrow wing leaving for mountain.  Count the syllables.

Show it to your mom.  She is touch and practical.  She has a son in Vietnam and a husband who may be having an affair.  She believes in wearing brown because it hides spots.  She'll look briefly at your writing, then back up at you with a face blank as a donut.  She'll say: "How about emptying the dishwasher?"  Look away.  Shove the forks in the fork drawer.  Accidentally break one of the freebie gas station glasses.  This is the required pain and suffering.  This is only for starters.

In your high school English class look only at Mr. Killian's face.  Decide faces are important.

Write a villanelle about pores.  Struggle.  Write a sonnet.  County the syllables:  nine, ten, eleven, thirteen.  Decide to experiment with fiction.  Here you don't have to count syllables.

Write a short story about an elderly man and woman who accidentally shoot each other in the head, the result of an inexplicable malfunction of a shotgun which appears mysteriously in their living room one night.  Give it to Mr. Killian as your final project.  When you get it back, he has written on it:  "Some of your images are quite nice, but you have no sense of plot."  When you are home, in the privacy of your own room, faintly crawl in pencil beneath his black-inked comments:  "Plots are for dead people, pore-face."

Abandoned Plum-Orchard

Lichen, mistletoe, aloft
In the dying croft,
Leaf the winter trees.

Boys Telling Bawdy Tales

Half-ignorant ribaldries,
Outrageous drolleries
Of infant Rabelais.

The Absence of the Muse

O Muse, where loiterest thou? In any land
Of Saturn, lit with moons and nenuphars?
Or in what high metropolis of Mars—
Hearing the gongs of dire, occult command,
And bugles blown from strand to unknown strand
Of continents embattled in old wars
That primal kings began? Or on the bars
Of ebbing seas in Venus, from the sand
Of shattered nacre with a thousand hues,
Dost pluck the blossoms of the purple wrack
And roses of blue coral for thy hair?
Or, flown beyond the roaring Zodiac,
Translatest thou the tale of earthly news
And earthly songs to singers of Altair?

Uit: Tula (Vertaald door Elizabeth Novickas)

„Your abode, Tūla, hung with faded pictures, where bread molds and flocks of gentle animals graze; it’s crammed with boxes and books, art reproductions, all sorts of notes, clothes, little boxes with voices and memories; a dwelling where the plumbing frequently chokes, and hardened wine in the old goblets of the pictures subsides into reddish crystals; I come to your barely open dry lips, beyond which yawns the black space of the mouth–there where your words, the ones uttered slowly, almost by the syllable, are hiding themselves–all of them are important to me alone; speak, Tūla: they rise, after all, from the very depths, from all of the places inside your flat, patient body, worn out by lethargy, suffering, illnesses, and indifference...
Speak to me, Tūla, tell me and remind me, whisper when I come in the middle of the night, the Old Town dogs whining trustfully as I cut across the ghostly Olandų Street highway and through the damp little yards of Filaretų Street, emerging like a ghost on the Polocko straightway across from the Bernardine graveyard–all this disagreeable little world is linked only to you, Tūla, and the Bernardines, although they’ve been gone a long time now... who says they’re gone? With my footsteps in the slushy snow seemingly drafting a topographic map of this quarter, past the dog market, the pharmacy, the fish and shoe stores, I descend to you, I descend and emerge on the icy shore of the Vilnelė, and the entire old part of the city, lit up by moonlight, really does look like an old city plan, meticulously drawn and colored by some sort of higher being... „
