Irrwegeszoll

Da hielt ich

den Wagen an und stieg aus.

Kein Mensch nirgendwo.

Liebliches Gestein ringsum.

Du bist die alte Straße

von Rom nach Nifl heim.

Hinter dem verqueren Gebirge aber

lauert der deutsche Wald

und die Weltgeschichte, das Weltgericht,

das Vergehen und Vergessen.

Ausgezogen für Imperien

heimgekehrt niemals wirklich. Allein

der Fels

gedenkt ihrer wie meiner

in aller Stille, die war, die ist,

die bleibt

über Abgründe hinweg

das einzig Lebendige.

Ein Fasan rennt aufgeregt

durch den Garten, mit einer Botschaft

an seinesgleichen vielleicht: Hüte dich

mißtönendes letztes Rufen, bevor

die endgültige Verwandlung

ihn ereilt.

Patience Taught by Nature

'O dreary life,' we cry, ' O dreary life ! '

And still the generations of the birds

Sing through our sighing, and the flocks and herds

Serenely live while we are keeping strife

With Heaven's true purpose in us, as a knife

Against which we may struggle ! Ocean girds

Unslackened the dry land, savannah-swards

Unweary sweep, hills watch unworn, and rife

Meek leaves drop yeary from the forest-trees
To show, above, the unwasted stars that pass

In their old glory: O thou God of old,

Grant me some smaller grace than comes to these !--

But so much patience as a blade of grass

Grows by, contented through the heat and cold.

The Best Thing in the World

What's the best thing in the world?
June-rose, by May-dew impearled;
Sweet south-wind, that means no rain;
Truth, not cruel to a friend;
Pleasure, not in haste to end;
Beauty, not self-decked and curled
Till its pride is over-plain;
Love, when, so, you're loved again.
What's the best thing in the world?
--Something out of it, I think.

„He divides his time equally between Kôroen and the Aoyama condominium. Around the beginning of October, when the company car came to pick him up, he lost his footing going down the stone staircase in front of the condominium and injured his ankle badly-a hairline fracture and a good deal of swelling, which left him unable to walk. In a panic, I jumped on the Shinkansen bullet train with Kiyotaka and rushed to see him. No sooner had he lost his mobility than he became difficult to deal with. He disliked the fussy way Ikuko looked after him, and telephoned for me to come over though I had just left. Thinking that it might turn out to be a long stay, I had no choice but to take Kiyotaka along. As soon as Father saw our faces he calmed down. Perhaps worrying about the house in Kôroen, he perversely started to say that we should go back right away. I didn't know whether to be amazed or amused by his willfulness. Entrusting him to the care of Ikuko and Okabe, his secretary, I decided to return to Kôroen and left for Tokyo Station with Kiyotaka.

It was there that I saw a travel poster for Mount Zaô.The large photograph was filled with the spreading branches of brightly colored trees in autumn. I had always associated Zaô with its ice-covered trees in winter, and I stood in the Tokyo Station concourse imagining how these trees-which would become pillars of ice, but were now brilliant with autumn foliage-would look swaying in the breeze under a star-studded night sky. For some reason, I felt an irresistible urge to let my handicapped child experience the invigorating mountains and see all the stars. When I told Kiyotaka this, his eyes brightened and he begged me to take him there. Although it seemed too much of an adventure for the two of us, we went to a travel agent inside the station and bought train tickets to Yamagata. Then we made reservations at an inn at Zaô. Hot Spring, and tried to reserve return seats on a flight from Sendai to Osaka Airport. No seats were available, though, and we had to change our plans and stay an extra night at either Zaô or Sendai before our return flight. I decided to stay two nights at Zaô so we headed for Ueno Station to catch the tram there. If we had stayed only one night at Zaô. I would not have run into you. It all seems very strange to me now.“

LE DEHORS

Comme le temps passe

« …I hate to see the evening sun go down… »

murmure la radio du coiffeur

avec accompagnement de cymbales japonaises

mais c'est bien peu de circonstance

le soleil est à peine levé

et les crachoirs de la boutique

commencent justement à briller

soupirs matinaux

mille anguilles électriques me travaillent les tempes

une couronne de mousse impériale

s'élève sur mon front

et je vois dans la glace

la moitié de mon visage

en train de rire de l'autre

posé entre les cuirs à aiguiser

un bouquet de tagètes

m'adresse des signes éperdus

dont le sens n'est guère convenable

« …kore nani…

„The open window faced west, and when I woke the sound of the sea reached me with a clarity that told me my senses were back to normal. I knew I could not put it off any longer. What I most wanted to do was to comb the island, find out whether the woman in the rowboat lived here – I had dreamt of her hair – but first I had to get to the bottom of something else. The nausea. Not the nausea of a hangover but the mysterious nausea that had suddenly laid me low some months earlier.

This brings me to a crucial point in my story (search?), and here I would ask not only that you pay attention, but that you keep an open mind: it was early summer and I was sitting in my office, reading a manuscript which, strictly speaking, I did not have to read. I was doing it as a gesture – all vain authors loved a perceptive remark at a party – and because I liked to keep myself up-to-date. I was about halfway through this manuscript when I began to feel nauseous. I thought it must have been something I‟d eaten: because I had had lunch down by the harbour, where I had been wooing – or what in my business is called „nurturing‟ – one of our promising new writers, and to make him feel special I had insisted on ordering champagne and oysters. But back in my office I soon realised that this queasiness was caused by what I was reading. And here I should just say that it was not a bad manuscript. Not at all. Its authoress was one of the most acclaimed in Norway, the novel had long since been snapped up by a publisher and I could tell with half an eye that it was no worse than her previous books.“

The Doom Of Beauty

Choice soul, in whom, as in a glass, we see,

Mirrored in thy pure form and delicate,

What beauties heaven and nature can create,

The paragon of all their works to be!

Fair soul, in whom love, pity, piety,

Have found a home, as from thy outward state

We clearly read, and are so rare and great

That they adorn none other like to thee!

Love takes me captive; beauty binds my soul;

Pity and mercy with their gentle eyes

Wake in my heart a hope that cannot cheat.

What law, what destiny, what fell control,

What cruelty, or late or soon, denies

That death should spare perfection so complete?

Nineteen Forty-four

The rats no longer crawl, the swallows are screeching
Pigeons won't fly, chickens are scratching the ground.
No warning bells for tempests, only for Avemaria.
The garden gate swings open and a pale child
Comes out running , he sits on a pile of stones
And plays all alone with a shiny tin can.
His mom is in the kitchen, with shaky hands
she chops kindling sticks, her knee on the worn floor.
Then lighting a match she hangs the milk pot
Over the fire while blowing to kindle the flame.
Outside again bells ring everywhere Avemaria,
in every poor town filled with melancholy.
At fifteen, at nineteen years! Buttoning their pants
the young men come around, they pull her pony tail:
Mom, we're really hungry, get our breakfast ready!
Half-naked they run outside underneath the down spout
and from the rain barrel, laughing, one washes up
while the other combs his hair, like two poplar trees.
O dear God, don't forget what has happened to us
protect our passions, look upon us and have pity.
Our lands are in the hands of total strangers,
they made us prisoners in their own homeland.
The children and the old they hung in the square,
our unmarried women they raped and abused.
Our happiness and joy has dried up in our hearts,
our smiling and our laughter have flown so far away.
Along the railroad tracks, along those endless roads
we jeopardize our lives to find a piece of bread.
Call us to you, O Lord and we will call on you,
bring back our days of old as they were once before.

Stanley keek me vragend aan – gaan we nou eerst rennen of eerst drinken?

Uit: The Pornographer Diaries

„Real, no joking naked ladies nudey mag. And it was amazing. Big round boobs and big hairy fannies that were so real I didn't need to use my imagination any more. Whole glossy pages of pink, bare flesh with just a hint of bird shit and mildew that was suddenly more fascinating and exhilarating than hunting Christmas presents or finding my big sister's diary. See, just lately I'd been finding women's bodies fascinating - not girls, not the little girls in my class, I still didn't care about them, I was talking about women - my friends' mums or even some of my mum's friend and I had a recurring fantasy about my form tutor Miss Jenkins keeping me behind after school to sit on my head, but I was still in the process of putting all the pieces together. Nudey mags seemed to hold some interesting clues. I'd heard all about these magazines before of course. Gary Allison had told us that he'd seen one his dad's stashed away in the shed and it was stacked full of pictures of ladies that had to take all their clothes off and stand in front of the camera while people took pictures of them. Barry had asked if they were covering themselves up with their hands or standing sideways or something and Gary had reassured us all that they were 'standing facing the camera and you can see everything.' At this point someone might as well have told me that the universe went on forever for all the ability I had to comprehend this. 'Everything!' David Tinnings exclaimed and normally we would've told him to fuck off and go and play with his flute but most of us were suddenly far to busy rearranging our trousers at this point. 'Bring it in,' Barry urged him. 'No I can't, it's my dad's, he'd kill me,' Gary replied. 'Yeah, Jimmy Hill. Your pants are on fire,' Neil Barratt responded, then added, 'He's lying,' for those of us who didn't know what the fuck he was going on about. 'I'm not,' he insisted. 'Then bring it in,' the whole of the first year waded in.“

Uit: Whore

„Sometimes at night I dream about that elementary school, go back there again and again for my piano exams, and it’s always the same thing, I can’t find my piano and my sheet music is missing a page, I go back there knowing that I haven’t played a note for years and that being there again at my age as if it were no big deal is ridiculous, and something tells me that it would be better to turn back and avoid the humiliation of no longer knowing how to play in front of the Mother Superior, that anyway she couldn’t care less whether I play since it’s no big news that I’ll never be a pianist, that I’ll never do anything but tinkle, and in that little redbrick schoolhouse where every clearing of a throat thundered in the corners, you had to form lines to go from one class to another, with the smallest first and the tallest last, and I had to be the smallest, I don’t know why but that was what we had to do, the smallest took the lead and wasn’t squeezed in between the smaller ones and the taller ones, and when school started and it was time for the sister to set up the marching order for the year, I’d bend my knees under my dress just to be sure, because yes, I was small, but it wasn’t absolutely certain that I was the smallest, I needed to put a little more into it, scrunch down to make sure I got first place, and then I disliked grown-ups, one word from them was enough to make me cry, which explains why I didn’t want to have anything to do with any part of them but their bellies, since bellies can’t speak or ask for anything, especially the sisters’ perfect round balloons that you had the impulse to bounce with your fist. Though today I’m way past this need to be small, for several years I’ve even worn platform shoes to make me taller, not too tall, just enough to look my clients in the face.“

„The dreams had been terror at loss, at something lost forever; but nothing was lost; all was retained between the sky and the earth, and within himself. He had lost nothing. The snow-covered mountain remained, without regard to titles of ownership or the white ranchers who thought they possessed it. They logged the trees, they killed the deer, bear, and mountain lions, they built their fences high; but the mountain was greater than any or all of these things. The mountain outdistanced their destruction, just as love had outdistanced death. The mountain could not be lost to them, because it was in their bones; Josiah and Rocky were not far away. They were close; they had always been close. And he loved them then as he had always loved them, the feeling pulsing over him as strong as it had ever been. . . . The damage that had been done had never reached this feeling. This feeling was their life, vitality locked deep in blood memory, and the people were strong, and the fifth world endured, and nothing was ever lost as long as the love remained.“
