„This was a demoniac laugh-low, suppressed, and deep-uttered, as  it seemed, at the very keyhole of my chamber door. The head of  my bed was near the door, and I thought at first the goblin-laugher
stood at my bedside-or rather, crouched by my pillow: but I rose,  looked round, and could see nothing; while, as I still gazed, the  unnatural sound was reiterated: and I knew it came from behind
the panels. My first impulse was to rise and fasten the bolt; my  next, again to cry out, ‘Who is there?’ Something gurgled and  moaned. Ere long, steps retreated up the gallery towards the third- storey staircase: a door had lately been made to shut in that  staircase; I heard it open and close, and all was still.
‘Was that Grace Poole? and is she possessed with a devil?’ thought  I. Impossible now to remain longer by myself: I must go to Mrs.  Fairfax. I hurried on my frock and a shawl; I withdrew the bolt and
opened the door with a trembling hand. There was a candle  burning just outside, and on the matting in the gallery. I  was surprised at this circumstance: but still more was I amazed to  perceive the air quite dim, as if filled with smoke; and, while  looking to the right hand and left, to find whence these blue  wreaths issued, I became further aware of a strong smell of  burning.
Something creaked: it was a door ajar; and that door was Mr.  Rochester’s, and the smoke rushed in a cloud from thence. I  thought no more of Mrs. Fairfax; I thought no more of Grace Poole,  or the laugh: in an instant, I was within the chamber. Tongues of  flame darted round the bed: the curtains were on fire. In the midst  of blaze and vapour, Mr. Rochester lay stretched motionless, in  deep sleep.“

J'y vais.“

Uit: Rumpole and the Reign of Terror

„The good news was that Mahmood had sufficient qualifications to practise as a doctor in England and had got a post at Oakwood Hospital. It was no doubt, as Tiffany said, because Mahmood’s father was so overcome with the happiness of the occasion that he had died on the night of their wedding, leaving his son the desirable house in Kilburn. Although he was permitted to remain in England and work here as a doctor, Mahmood, like his father, never became a British citizen.

There seemed to have been no blot on the contented life of the young Khan family until that dreadful morning when the police called early at the Kilburn house and Dr Mahmood met the fate he had managed to avoid in his native country. He was under arrest.

‘And not being a British subject, he’s liable to be deported.’ Bonny Bernard spoke in pessimistic and depressing terms, a process known to him as ‘preparing the client for the worst’. Tears welled in Tiffany’s eyes, which she wiped quickly away with the back of her hand as she went on with her story. They came for Mahmood Khan when Tiffany was getting their children ready for school and he was about to leave for the hospital. They were three police officers in plain clothes and they refused to explain why he was being arrested or where he was being taken. He, it seemed, was controlled and told her it must be some extraordinary mistake. It was only as they were going out of the house that one of the officers thought to announce that Mahmood was being arrested under the Terrorism Act. The last thing she heard him say was that the idea was ridiculous.“

Self-Portrait with a Cut Ear

It's dawn. Again. Life is obliging. Obliging us.
It's dawn. Again. Dissolved in speech. Locked
in a spiral down to the last fall,
fall into nothing, horror of nothing. Devouring us.
I come with my relics of all that is wrong.
With one ear gone. And bleeding. A bullet in my temple.
Abandonment. Ridiculous bedroom of a miserable hotel.
The world was standing outside. A party of others.
I spied on them. Hungry eye nailed to openings.
I come from all that is wrong.
I travel from the torturous circles of hell.
I come from what is wrong; just that: from the wrong.
But it's dawn. It's dawn again. Obliging. Obliging us.

Watercolor

It is the first hour.

From the orient
comes the sun.

The moon,
despoiled of the gold
of night,
goes down slowly towards the west
that waits for it under the line
of the horizon.

On the basso continuo
of the shore
the waves unravel,
one by one,
the music they bring
from as far
as time,
and it’s a tune, and another tune
and a thousand more tunes,
rhythmic, repeated,
spilled on the sand.

The seabirds
begin
their flights,
some swiftly, others
unhurriedly
they fall on the water, well-aimed,
they rise up, they fly away
until at last the sun´s glare
stumps them

Little by little you hear
voices, echoes, a song.

The breeze, gardener,
sprinkles orange blossoms
on the bright blue of the sea.

Uit: Puppet on a Chain

„Or perhaps that's unfair -- the nondescript bit, I mean. To qualify for that rather denigrating description

there must exist comparative terms of reference to justify its use: unfortunately for the remainder of the

passengers there were two others aboard that plane who would have made anyone look nondescript.

I looked at them three seats behind me on the other side of the aisle. This was hardly a move on my part to attract any attention as most of the men within eyeing distance of them had done little else but look at them since leaving Heathrow Airport: not to have looked at them at all would have been an almost guaranteed method of attracting attention.

Just a couple of girls sitting together. You can find a couple of girls sitting together almost anywhere but you'd have to give up the best years of your life to the search of finding a couple like those. One with hair as dark as a raven's wing, the other a shining platinum blonde, both clad, albeit marginally, in

mini-dresses, the dark one in an all-white silk affair, the blonde all in black, and both of them possessed as far as one could see-and one could see a great deal-of figures that demonstrated clearly the immense strides forward made by a select few of womankind since the days of Venus di Milo. Above all, they were strikingly beautiful, but not with that vapid and empty brand of unformed good looks which wins the Miss World contest: curiously alike, they had the delicately formed bone structure, the cleanly cut features, and the unmistakable quality of intelligence which would keep them still beautiful twenty years after the faded Miss Worlds of yesterday had long since given up the unequal competition.“

À commettre un forfait qu'on osa méditer;

Gainful Employmen

As if I had nothing better to do,
and who says I have, than putting the house
I haven't got in order, I sit at the oak desk
I have got, though really a table not a desk
but it's mine and I sanded it down myself
and beeswaxed it with iron wire-wool

- that was how important it was for me:
this surface on which so much was to be
accomplished. Best of all, I can take
its legs off, and replace them by way of
four angelic wing-nuts to the corner brackets
so it's both a steadfast and a movable beast.

But I wonder why I kept this biro spring
I'm exercising now between my finger
and thumb - not to sew my eyelids up with
like the envious spirits in purgatory.
Just too exquisite to throw away,
an image of infinity or information ...

I'm still here, where there's an unconsolable
joy to be had, sitting ready at my station
and waiting for the bugle or the slughorn.
No one can say it's wasting time, my time, the time I've got,
to enter the very thread of the helix,
to live always expecting the unheard of.

Lieveling -

De stormwind riep en
De regen riep
- Je voeten liepen
Waar ik sliep.

Telkens bedolven
- Ternauwernood -
Kwam een klacht uit de golven
- Was ik dood.

- Waarom tot onaardse
Dromen gewekt
Zonder opwaartse
Ziel die trekt -

Het schreeuwt uit het sneeuwige
Schuim vandaan
- Als jij zal ik eeuwig
Verder gaan.

- Van verbroken beloften
Blijven wij buit
- Niets, niets is op de
Wegen vooruit.

Te zwaar was het water, te
Licht is de wind
- O, Christofoor, waar is het
Kind, het kind -

Alom, toen, geheim en
Weg-stervende
- Blijf bij me, bij me
Zwervende -

En, eindelijk, stijgend de
Maan langs en heen,
Een bijna zwijgende
Wolk verdween.

O wonden, o bloei Gods! Mij is in 't bloed
In duizend bloemen mij uitbreken doet -

Kringloop

we leken even voor elkaar geschapen,
en alle leugens werden weer geloofd.

Toch hebben we zeer van elkaar gehouden,
het is gekomen als het is gegaan;

mijn lieve vijandin, zie hoe
ik mij van wapentuig ontdoe;
dit is uiteindelijk het beste.

Het heeft alleen zo lang geduurd:
de bitterheid waarmee wij streden
heeft voor ons alletwee voorgoed

zowel de toekomst als het heden
volledig in de war gestuurd. -
Zeg nu maar hoe het verder moet.

Uit: Birdsong

“Inside, the house was both smaller and larger than it looked. It had no rooms of intimidating grandeur, no gilt ballrooms with dripping chandeliers, yet it had unexpected spaces and corridors that disclosed new corners with steps down into the gardens; there were small salons equipped with writing desks and tapestry-covered chairs that opened inward from unregarded passageways. Even from the end of the lawn, it was difficult to see how the rooms and corridors were fitted into the placid rectangles of stone. Throughout the building the floors made distinctive sounds beneath the press of feet, so that with its closed angles and echoing air, the house was always a place of unseen footsteps.

Stephen Wraysford's metal trunk had been sent ahead and was waiting at the foot of the bed. He unpacked his clothes and hung his spare suit in the giant carved wardrobe. There was an enamel wash bowl and wooden towel rail beneath the window. He had to stand on tiptoe to look out over the boulevard, where a cab was waiting on the other side of the street, the horse shaking its harness and reaching up its neck to nibble at the branches of a lime tree. He tested the resilience of the bed, then lay down on it, resting his head on the concealed bolster. The room was simple but had been decorated with some care. There was a vase of wild flowers on the table and two prints of street scenes in Honfleur on either side of the door.

It was a spring evening, with a late sun in the sky beyond the cathedral and the sound of blackbirds from either side of the house. Stephen washed perfunctorily and tried to flatten his black hair in the small mirror. He placed half a dozen cigarettes in a metal case that he tucked inside his jacket. He emptied his pockets of items he no longer needed: railway tickets, a blue leather notebook, and a knife with a single, scrupulously sharpened blade.”

She gives him a ride, staring at his head. She seems odd to him; he wants her to watch the road. I believe perhaps she's been taking illicit narcotics, he thinks to himself.

"Uh," she finally starts to say, and he can see it right there in her eyes: James Dean, Natalie Wood ... What will he do? She's driving and, besides, she's a girl. You can't smash a girl over the head with a food tray.

"Montgomery Clift," he heads off her blunder, "Elizabeth Taylor."

"Elizabeth Taylor," she nods. "I've heard of her ..." pondering it a moment. "Far out."

He realizes she has no idea who Montgomery Clift is. "You can let me off here," he says, and she drops him where Sunset and Hollywood Boulevards fork, at a small theater—

A silent European film from the late twenties, it's the worst print Vikar has seen — less a movie than a patchwork of celluloid — but he's spellbound. In the late Middle Ages a young woman, identified in the credits only as "Mlle Falconetti," is interrogated and hounded by a room of monks. The woman doesn't give a performance, as such; Vikar has never seen acting that seemed less to be acting. It's more an inhabitation. The movie is shot completely in close-ups, including the unbearable ending, when the young woman is burned at the stake.

Sogar kriminelle Verstöße hatte man ihm zur Last gelegt.
