Üit: Lolita

“I was extremely fond of her, despite the rigidity--the fatal rigidity--of some of her rules. Perhaps she wanted to make of me, in the fullness of time, a better widower than my father. Aunt Sybil had pink-rimmed azure eyes and a waxen complexion. She wrote poetry. She was poetically superstitious. She said she knew she would die soon after my sixteenth birthday, and did. Her husband, a great traveler in perfumes, spent most of his time in America, where eventually he founded a firm and acquired a bit of real estate.

I grew, a happy, healthy child in a bright world of illustrated books, clean sand, orange trees, friendly dogs, sea vistas and smiling faces. Around me the splendid Hotel Mirana revolved as a kind of private universe, a whitewashed cosmos within the blue greater one that blazed outside. From the aproned pot-scrubber to the flanneled potentate, everybody liked me, everybody petted me. Elderly American ladies leaning on their canes listed toward me like towers of Pisa. Ruined Russian princesses who could not pay my father, bought me expensive bonbons. He, mon cher petit papa, took me out boating and biking, taught me to swim and dive and water-ski, read to me Don Quixote and Les Misérables, and I adored and respected him and felt glad for him whenever I overheard the servants discuss his various lady-friends, beautiful and kind beings who made much of me and cooed and shed precious tears over my cheerful motherlessness.”

„We kept our answer-sheet, the proof of our underperformance, in our bags and strolled back to Kumaon. We met at dinner in the mess. The food was insipid as usual, and Alok wrinkled his pug nose as he dispiritedly plopped a thick blob of green substance mess-workers called bhindi masala into his plate. He slammed two rotis on his stainless-steel plate and ignored the rest of the semi-solid substances like dal, raita and pulao. Ryan and I took everything; though everything tasted the same, we could at least have some variety of colors on our plate.

Alok finally brought up the topic of the quiz at the dinner table.

“So, now you don’t have anything to say?”

Ryan and I looked at each other.

“Say what?” I said.

“That how crap this is,” Alok said.

“The food?” I said, fully aware Alok meant otherwise.

“No damn it! Not the damn food,” Alok said, “The apmech quiz.” His expression changed from the usual tragic one to a livelier angry one. I found that expression marginally more pleasant to look at and easier to deal with.

“What about the quiz? That we are screwed. What is to discuss in that?” Ryan simplified.

“Oh really. We are screwed, no damn doubt in that,” Alok said.

I think Alok picks up a word and uses it too much, which ruins the effect. There were too many ‘damns’ in his dialogues.

“Then drop it. Anyway, you got the highest amongst us. So, be happy.”

“Happy? Yes, I am happy. The average is eleven, and someone got seventeen. And here I am, at damn seven. Yes, I am happy my damn Terminator ass,” Alok scoffed.“

't beginnen rinkelen in eeuwigheid

IV

Aanspoelend met de laag van heden,

bloedend over de schilfers schist,

vloeien wij slapend naar beneden,

de poriën vol zaad en gist.

Over de ribben van de berg,

de richels en de zilvren daken,

een stroom van alcohol en merg,

van schot en straling en ontwaken.

Vlammende schimmels in de stroom,

bloedvingers van de plant astilbe

- en dan ontploft als een atoom

op onze kalken mond de silbe,

bliksem van het splijtend woord,

gloeiende priem aan 't kerven,

die de gespannen tong doorboort,

dat rode blad met blauwe nerven.

O kinderen, mijn pulp, mijn wonden,

So schlau.

Overzealous Thieves

They stole the stereo and the candelabra and the food from the refrigerator, and the crystal ashtrays and the television and even the air conditioner, and then they stole the refrigerator itself, and the television stand and the rest of the furniture and the cash stashed in the strongbox kept in the safe in the bedroom wall, and then they stole the safe and the bedroom wall as well; then they stole all the other walls and the bronze plumbing running through them, and the cement foundations underneath them, and the roof above them, and then they stole the trees and flowers from the garden and then the garden itself and the soil on which the house had been built, and they stole the granite substratum and various additional geologic layers, including one particularly extensive solid mass of pure basalt, and the pockets of water trapped inside it, and they kept on robbing and robbing until they set off an eruption of lava from a volcanic explosion which completely buried all evidence of their exploits, along with the immediate environs, the entire town, and a sizable portion of the greater metropolitan area in which they had carried out their crimes, and various sections of the adjacent geography, too, and, finally, fittingly, themselves, those bungling, impetuous and, most of all, overrated thieves.

Circe's Grief

In the end, I made myself
Known to your wife as
A god would, in her own house, in
Ithaca, a voice
Without a body: she
Paused in her weaving, her head turning
First to the right, then left
Though it was hopeless of course
To trace that sound to any
Objective source: I doubt
She will return to her loom
With what she knows now. When
You see her again, tell her
This is how a god says goodbye:
If I am in her head forever
I am in your life forever.

Uit: Je me souviens (The Spirit of Canada, 1939)

Helen's Song

The Rose is

Weeping for her love,

The nightingale.

And he is flying

Fast above,

To her he will

Not fail.

Already golden

Eve appears;

He wings his way along;

Ah! look he comes

To kiss her tears,

And soothe her

With his song.

„But in process of time, and in ages of ignorance, the clerk began to invade the power and assume the dignity of his master. The laws of writing were no longer founded on the practice of the author, but on the dictates of the critic. The clerk became the legislator, and those very peremptorily gave laws whose business it was, at first, only to transcribe them.

Hence arose an obvious, and perhaps an unavoidable error; for these critics being men of shallow capacities, very easily mistook mere form for substance. They acted as a judge would, who should adhere to the lifeless letter of law, and reject the spirit. Little circumstances, which were perhaps accidental in a great author, were by these critics considered to constitute his chief merit, and transmitted as essentials to be observed by all his successors. To these encroachments, time and ignorance, the two great supporters of imposture, gave authority; and thus many rules for good writing have been established, which have not the least foundation in truth or nature; and which commonly serve for no other purpose than to curb and restrain genius, in the same manner as it would have restrained the dancing-master, had the many excellent treatises on that art laid it down as an essential rule that every man must dance in chains.“

Uit: The Art of Fiction No. 75 (Interview door Alfred Mac Adam)

„INTERVIEWER

Swift was no less devoted to digression than Sterne. What do you think of him?

CABRERA INFANTE

The digressor as aggressor. The difference is that Swift was all saeva indignatio and that savage indignation was the motor of all his writings. You couldn’t find a less playful writer among his contemporaries. Compared to Swift, Pope was a stand-up comedian.

INTERVIEWER

You seem to have an affinity for English eighteenth-century satire—something people might not expect from a Cuban writer. How do you understand satire, as a literary genre?

CABRERA INFANTE

Look, my friend, who knows what to expect from a Cuban writer, or any writer anywhere? Why not Sterne and Swift? Or Armor and Swift? At best, satire is didactic. At worst, political. This means that satires are not ludic or playful but just the opposite. They are the play wherein the satirist catches the conscience of the audience, which is why they are so closely related to sermons, religious tracts, and political pamphlets. Personally, I feel closer to Swift’s motto, Vive la bagatelle, than to his epitaph. Long live trivia! Where he and I part company is the grave, where his satire is most serious, and where I would rather turn that bagatelle into “bag-a-Stella.” Swift wanted to use satire, literature, “to mend the World.” To me this makes writing, which should be an end in itself—literature—into something political. Any literary work that aspires to the condition of art must forget politics, religion, and, ultimately, morals. Otherwise it will be a pamphlet, a sermon, or a morality play. Even the greatest moralist of our century, Joseph Conrad, was first and foremost an entertainer.“

„This was a demoniac laugh-low, suppressed, and deep-uttered, as  it seemed, at the very keyhole of my chamber door. The head of  my bed was near the door, and I thought at first the goblin-laugher
stood at my bedside-or rather, crouched by my pillow: but I rose,  looked round, and could see nothing; while, as I still gazed, the  unnatural sound was reiterated: and I knew it came from behind
the panels. My first impulse was to rise and fasten the bolt; my  next, again to cry out, ‘Who is there?’ Something gurgled and  moaned. Ere long, steps retreated up the gallery towards the third- storey staircase: a door had lately been made to shut in that  staircase; I heard it open and close, and all was still.
‘Was that Grace Poole? and is she possessed with a devil?’ thought  I. Impossible now to remain longer by myself: I must go to Mrs.  Fairfax. I hurried on my frock and a shawl; I withdrew the bolt and
opened the door with a trembling hand. There was a candle  burning just outside, and on the matting in the gallery. I  was surprised at this circumstance: but still more was I amazed to  perceive the air quite dim, as if filled with smoke; and, while  looking to the right hand and left, to find whence these blue  wreaths issued, I became further aware of a strong smell of  burning.
Something creaked: it was a door ajar; and that door was Mr.  Rochester’s, and the smoke rushed in a cloud from thence. I  thought no more of Mrs. Fairfax; I thought no more of Grace Poole,  or the laugh: in an instant, I was within the chamber. Tongues of  flame darted round the bed: the curtains were on fire. In the midst  of blaze and vapour, Mr. Rochester lay stretched motionless, in  deep sleep.“

J'y vais.“

Uit: Rumpole and the Reign of Terror

„The good news was that Mahmood had sufficient qualifications to practise as a doctor in England and had got a post at Oakwood Hospital. It was no doubt, as Tiffany said, because Mahmood’s father was so overcome with the happiness of the occasion that he had died on the night of their wedding, leaving his son the desirable house in Kilburn. Although he was permitted to remain in England and work here as a doctor, Mahmood, like his father, never became a British citizen.

There seemed to have been no blot on the contented life of the young Khan family until that dreadful morning when the police called early at the Kilburn house and Dr Mahmood met the fate he had managed to avoid in his native country. He was under arrest.

‘And not being a British subject, he’s liable to be deported.’ Bonny Bernard spoke in pessimistic and depressing terms, a process known to him as ‘preparing the client for the worst’. Tears welled in Tiffany’s eyes, which she wiped quickly away with the back of her hand as she went on with her story. They came for Mahmood Khan when Tiffany was getting their children ready for school and he was about to leave for the hospital. They were three police officers in plain clothes and they refused to explain why he was being arrested or where he was being taken. He, it seemed, was controlled and told her it must be some extraordinary mistake. It was only as they were going out of the house that one of the officers thought to announce that Mahmood was being arrested under the Terrorism Act. The last thing she heard him say was that the idea was ridiculous.“

Self-Portrait with a Cut Ear

It's dawn. Again. Life is obliging. Obliging us.
It's dawn. Again. Dissolved in speech. Locked
in a spiral down to the last fall,
fall into nothing, horror of nothing. Devouring us.
I come with my relics of all that is wrong.
With one ear gone. And bleeding. A bullet in my temple.
Abandonment. Ridiculous bedroom of a miserable hotel.
The world was standing outside. A party of others.
I spied on them. Hungry eye nailed to openings.
I come from all that is wrong.
I travel from the torturous circles of hell.
I come from what is wrong; just that: from the wrong.
But it's dawn. It's dawn again. Obliging. Obliging us.

Watercolor

It is the first hour.

From the orient
comes the sun.

The moon,
despoiled of the gold
of night,
goes down slowly towards the west
that waits for it under the line
of the horizon.

On the basso continuo
of the shore
the waves unravel,
one by one,
the music they bring
from as far
as time,
and it’s a tune, and another tune
and a thousand more tunes,
rhythmic, repeated,
spilled on the sand.

The seabirds
begin
their flights,
some swiftly, others
unhurriedly
they fall on the water, well-aimed,
they rise up, they fly away
until at last the sun´s glare
stumps them

Little by little you hear
voices, echoes, a song.

The breeze, gardener,
sprinkles orange blossoms
on the bright blue of the sea.

Uit: Puppet on a Chain

„Or perhaps that's unfair -- the nondescript bit, I mean. To qualify for that rather denigrating description

there must exist comparative terms of reference to justify its use: unfortunately for the remainder of the

passengers there were two others aboard that plane who would have made anyone look nondescript.

I looked at them three seats behind me on the other side of the aisle. This was hardly a move on my part to attract any attention as most of the men within eyeing distance of them had done little else but look at them since leaving Heathrow Airport: not to have looked at them at all would have been an almost guaranteed method of attracting attention.

Just a couple of girls sitting together. You can find a couple of girls sitting together almost anywhere but you'd have to give up the best years of your life to the search of finding a couple like those. One with hair as dark as a raven's wing, the other a shining platinum blonde, both clad, albeit marginally, in

mini-dresses, the dark one in an all-white silk affair, the blonde all in black, and both of them possessed as far as one could see-and one could see a great deal-of figures that demonstrated clearly the immense strides forward made by a select few of womankind since the days of Venus di Milo. Above all, they were strikingly beautiful, but not with that vapid and empty brand of unformed good looks which wins the Miss World contest: curiously alike, they had the delicately formed bone structure, the cleanly cut features, and the unmistakable quality of intelligence which would keep them still beautiful twenty years after the faded Miss Worlds of yesterday had long since given up the unequal competition.“

À commettre un forfait qu'on osa méditer;
De brûler du désir de se rendre homicide;
De subir le remords avant le parricide;
De passer, de flotter du crime à la vertu;

Gainful Employmen

As if I had nothing better to do,
and who says I have, than putting the house
I haven't got in order, I sit at the oak desk
I have got, though really a table not a desk
but it's mine and I sanded it down myself
and beeswaxed it with iron wire-wool

- that was how important it was for me:
this surface on which so much was to be
accomplished. Best of all, I can take
its legs off, and replace them by way of
four angelic wing-nuts to the corner brackets
so it's both a steadfast and a movable beast.

But I wonder why I kept this biro spring
I'm exercising now between my finger
and thumb - not to sew my eyelids up with
like the envious spirits in purgatory.
Just too exquisite to throw away,
an image of infinity or information ...

I'm still here, where there's an unconsolable
joy to be had, sitting ready at my station
and waiting for the bugle or the slughorn.
No one can say it's wasting time, my time, the time I've got,
to enter the very thread of the helix,
to live always expecting the unheard of.
